good and eager to get home to Dorothy.
Ed's figure loomed from the doorway of the General Store, bringing Will's
thoughts crashing back to reality, the fact that he had arranged to meet him that
evening had completely slipped his mind. Will pointed down Boronia Road "Let's
walk." The Vermont junction comprised only four or five shops and within minutes
they were virtually in the countryside.
"We veered off on the wrong tack last Saturday, Will. Tony and I both know
that without the information you've provided, and everything else as well, we
would be at a standstill with the Serb/Croat surveillance. You can have the
recorded information in whatever form you want, to play back to your contact."
"The reason I want the recording is because I need to verify the authenticity
of the information."
"We realized that afterwards Will. It was stupid of me."
"I can rely on you then?"
"Yes."
"I must get home now Ed, let me know how you get on."
"Before you go, did you have a look at the transmitter?"
"Yes, but I need the recorder to complete the job."
"I've got it in the car, you can have it now. Will I be able to see you soon
because the first surveillance date is only three weeks away?"
Will thought for a moment remembering that he had better get more ambitious.
"I'll come to your office after the old man leaves next Friday night."
During the course of the week Will completed the surveillance transmitter. It
was a pretty primitive arrangement but nevertheless efficient, and housed so that
it could be hidden in a small bag or attache case. There would be no prizes for this
device, but it worked well, which was the main requirement.
On Friday evening, Will entered the outer office. As anticipated, the old man
had left so he proceeded to the end of the corridor and knocked on Ed's door,
entering without waiting for permission. Ed sat at his desk engrossed in
paperwork, he looked up without any surprise on his face.
"It's a change to come into your office without being confronted with a pistol."
Ed opened his desk drawer, took out the pistol, replaced it, and closed the
drawer. "If needed it's available."
