Lowell of France, is alive with silk manufactories. Paris is<br />

handsome and proud, showy and sinful. Berlin is rich in<br />

historic and artistic attractions. The cathedrals are open<br />

at all hours of the day in these cities. On their feet-worn<br />

floors, prince and peasant meet as equals. Gardens in European<br />

cities and hamlets are enjoyed by the people as by the<br />

proprietors. Visitors do not presume to meddle with plant<br />

or flower. The citizens generally are better mannered and<br />

more polished than in America. Our caste is based upon<br />

wealth. Our boasted individuality has degenerated into a<br />

selfish rascality. Our laws punish little, and pardon great<br />

criminals. New-York City only a year since had sixty thousand<br />

children of school age that had never been inside a<br />

schoolroom. American self-conceit and English caste are<br />

both abominable. As nations they are antichrist.<br />

LONDON.<br />

Crossing the English Channel from France to Dover, a<br />

few hours through the fertile fields of Merry England<br />

brought us to the heart of London, the city of cities, with a<br />

population almost equal to that of the whole State of New<br />

York. Individuals may drive sixteen miles in a straight<br />

line upon any one of London's diameters. The seven parks<br />

have been termed, not inaptly, the lungs of London. They<br />

lie chiefly at the West End. The Richmond Park, owned by<br />

the crown, has two thousand two hundred acres, and is<br />

eight miles in circumference. Hyde Park claims four hundred<br />

acres. Victoria Park, named in honor of the Queen, is<br />

comparatively new, but exceedingly beautiful with lake and<br />
