Bid to
address
lack of
facilities
for youth
• By Noah Graham
WORK TO address a lack of
services, activities and facilities
for youth in Waltham and
Sydenham will start later this
year.
The Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board is waiting
on a report by city council
staff, which will be presented in
September, that will research into
what youth, particularly teenagers,
want for the area.
Community board deputy
chairman Jake McLellan said
although there were plenty of
facilities in the area such as ice
skating and rock climbing but
they tended to be aimed at a lower
age group.
“There is not the type of facilities
in the area that a teenager
would want to go to.”
Mr McLellan said there has
been a long-standing need for
programmes and services for
youth in the areas.
He said one way to find out
what youth want would be
through a youth community
board.
A GOOD initiative on page 1 today
– a bid to get facilities for youth in
Waltham and Sydenham.
Research is under way to find
out what teenagers want and the
findings will be presented to the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community
Board in September.
If I was to add my five cents worth
into the mix I’d say direct them to
a sports club in the area – rugby,
cricket, softball, league, netball,
whatever takes their fancy.
There’s nothing better to build
character and discipline than to play
in a team sport.
I hope the report council staff
are doing for the community board
includes that idea.
Speaking of sport, reporter Noah
Graham profiles jiu-jitsu expert Paul
Stokes on pages 6-7.
Protection planned for cyclists
• By Noah Graham
FLEXIBLE POSTS will be
added along the edge of the
Grove Rd, Addington, cycleway
to prevent people driving onto
it.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said the posts will
be installed in the ‘next few
weeks’ to prevent people from
driving onto it and ensuring
user safety.
Manuka
Cottage manager
Cherylan
Davies (left)
was delighted to
hear city council
were installing
the posts after she was worried
cyclists could be injured.
She said it was only a matter
of time before someone was hurt
on the narrow road as, when
passing each other, cars would
often swerve into available gaps
and that would often be the
cycleway.
“Anything that makes it safer
for pedestrians and cyclists is a
good idea,” she said.
However, Mrs Davies said city
council needed to monitor the
road properly and make sure
IMPEDING: Grove Rd residents will be penalised if they continue to park on berms and pathways
along the road once the cycle way is complete.
people were following the road
rules down the street.
On one side of Grove Rd parking
was removed to install the
cycleway, which is part of the
Little River Link, one of the 13
major cycle routes which aim to
connect the city.
With less parking, a small
number of people have
started parking on the berms
and the cycleway during its
construction, Ms Ellis
said.
“Construction contractors
have reminded residents not to
do this, which has worked in
most cases.
“[City] council will use
enforcement measures if
necessary once the cycleway is
open.”
The cycleway is expected to be
completed in a few weeks.
In Brief
SIGNS PLEASE RESIDENTS
Somerfield residents are delighted
to see the new school speed zones
installed on Studholme and
Somerfield Sts. The 40km/h signs
were installed late last month.
Somerfield Residents Association
chairwoman Julie Tobbell said
she was pleased to see the signs up
making the area safer for children.
SPARKS RD CONSULTATION
Consultation on the Sparks Rd
footpath opened yesterday. City
council is proposing improvements
on 381 Sparks Rd, outside the old
Halswell Library, and the installation
of a zebra pedestrian crossing
over the left turning lane from
Halswell Rd onto Sparks Rd. The
consultation will close on May 29.
COFFEE CART AT QUARRY
A coffee cart has been granted a
spot at the Halswell Quarry, following
a city council idea to get
small businesses to set up in the
space. The city council asked for
expressions on interest in spring
last year and Coffee Vice won a
temporary lease to set up shop
near the Singleman’s House. The
decision to allow a vendor into the
park was made after plans to convert
the Singlemen’s House into a
cafe were turned down. The cart is
currently operating from Tuesday
to Friday, 8.30am-2pm and Saturday
to Sunday, 8.30am-4pm.
Veterinary practice
OUR VISIT TO UC
DAVIS, CALIFORNIA
Steve, Isaac and myself recently spent time
at UC Davis, the #1 Veterinary school in the
world. For 2 years running it has received
this huge accolade and when you are
there you can see why. It operates and is
the size of a mini CHCH Public hospital.
They are a teaching hospital as well as
seeing referral patients and first opinion
clients. Their specialities include 24/7
emergency and critical care, cardiology,
neurology, ophthalmology,
oncology and surgery. They
were originally set up to
see 5500 patients per year,
last year they saw 50,000
patients. Everyone was so
friendly and helpful and
enthusiastic about being
part of this college. It had a
wonderful vibe... Isaac was
hooked.
Approximately 140 students
get accepted yearly in to
Davis, with around 10% being
male. It cost about US$45,000
for tuition( $64000 NZL)
and then there is living costs on top of
that. Vet students on average come out
owing US $135,000. These students have
spent the previous 4 years obtaining an
excellent undergraduate degree just to
get accepted, majoring in science and
maths. There are 30 colleges of Veterinary
Medicine in the US and each year about
3000 students get accepted. About 40%
of students who apply get accepted
somewhere. In your 3rd year you start to
branch off in your area of interest – either
companion animal, equine, mixed practice
or production animals.
After their 4 year degree at Davis, most
will apply for 1-2 year internship at another
Veterinary College to further their skills
in an area they are interested in. Davis
don’t offer internships. Our freshman
(first year) guide loves dentistry so her
plans are to become a specialist in this
field. After her internship, she then needs
to apply for a residency at one of the 30
colleges, which could be anything from
3-5 years more study!! These are hard to
come by, and you have to be the best of
the bunch, although a Vet degree from
UC Davis stands you in good steed. So to
be a specialist in your field in the US takes
between 13-15 years, and the debt these
students accrue is massive, a few get
scholarships, but most have to pay. I met a
vet in her 40’s who still has a student loan.
Steve spent 2 days tagging along with
ophthalmology specialists, residents and
students on rotation. First and second
year students get at least 2 weeks of
ophthalmology per year ( 27 years ago
when I studied at Massey, 1 day was
dedicated to “eyes”). He really enjoyed the
collegial discussions on cases, sussing out
all the latest equipment, chatting to the
students and doing rounds with them.
Steve came away pleased with his skills
and
expertise in
ophthalmology,
although a
few pieces of
equipment caught
his eye.
Isaac and I
thoroughly
enjoyed our 3 hour tour of the
entire faculty. Isaac loved the exotics
hospital where they house and treat the
reptiles, birds, rabbits, turtles etc. We
also visited their raptor centre, home to
rescued birds of prey that can no longer
see or fly. He also enjoyed watching elbow
arthroscopy on a Golden Retriever from a
viewing room. He could see them cutting
and sucking out torn cartilage from the
video screen. What amazed me was the
amount of people in theatre – 9 in all,
including the chief surgeon, 2 residents,
3 anesthetists and 4th year students.
There were so many people milling
around keenly observing. They do MRI
and CT here and even have a massive
MRI machine that can fit a horse into.
The most expensive patient to date was
a spoodle who underwent dialysis for 18
months, visiting the hospital twice weekly
to have all the toxins removed from her
blood. Her final account was US$140,000!
The most expensive piece of equipment
is a linear accelerator used for radiation
treatment for cancer patients costing a
little over 1 million. Apparently one of the
only surgical procedures NOT performed
here at Davis is renal transplants as when
attempted on cats over 10 years ago,
the survival rate was poor. A handful of
colleges perform renal transplants in cats
including the Pennsylvania and Georgia
College of Vet medicine.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent
at Davis and I thought how amazing,
fun and expensive it would be to be a
student now studying vet medicine at
UC Davis. The students we met were just
so absorbed, very happy and grateful to
be at this world class faculty. I came out
thinking I am so in the right profession.
Riverbanks earmarked for clean-up
• By Noah Graham
GROUPS ARE getting ready to
clean up riverbanks.
This Saturday, hundreds
of volunteers will don their
gumboots to pick up rubbish littering
Christchurch riverbanks
for the annual Mother of All
Clean Ups.
Volunteers will line the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary as well as the
Heathcote and Avon Rivers to
try and clean out waste that is
further polluting the rivers.
Avon-Heathcote
Estuary
Ihutai Trust
co-ordinator
Tanya Jenkins
said the cleanup,
held on the
Helene
Mautner
eve of Mother’s
Day every year,
was an opportunity
to give a gift
back to Mother Nature.
“We were thrilled to see such
an enormous turnout of caring
people last year.
“Close to 1300 members of
the public tidied 156km of river
bank and estuary edge,” she said.
More than 20 tonnes of
rubbish was collected last year
which ranged from plastic bags
to computers and even a sheep
carcass.
RUBBISH: During last year’s Mother of All Clean Ups more
than 1300 volunteers removed more than 20 tonnes of
rubbish from the Opawaho/Heathcote River.
“We are hoping that we collect
less this year as the aim of the
event is to raise awareness of the
issue and for individuals to take
responsibility for their careful
disposal of rubbish,” Mrs Jenkins
said.
Opawaho-Heathcote
River Network co-chairwoman
Helene Mautner said volunteers
would not need to get into the
water, they would just be cleaning
the banks.
“We have a saying: If your feet
get wet you’ve gone too far.”
Dr Mautner said it was a great
couple of hours to be involved
in.
The two-hour clean-up starts
at 10am, with volunteers urged
to register through ohr.co.nz,
however, people are welcome to
turn up on the day.
Last year more than 50
community groups joined the
clean-up.
Youth facilities
in focus
•From page 1
Mr McLellan said he did not
want to pre-empt the staff report
but said a social facility like the
Hornby Youth Hangout could be
a good idea.
“How could you be against the
idea?”
However, he said it was too early
to start making any real plans as
nothing was on the table yet.
Youthtown Christchurch southern
region area manager Amanda
Murray said there was a lack of
facilities for youth in the area and
it was always hard to get teenagers
to engage with community
groups.
She said sports clubs and church
groups sometimes worked but they
often added pressure teenagers did
not want to deal with.
Most of the time teenagers just
want a place to hang out and
socialise, she said.
Ms Murray said a facility like
the Hornby Youth Hangout
would be a good idea for the area.
However, she said if that was
a path the board was wanting to
go down, they would have to be
serious about it and be willing to
commit to the facility as well as
providing a youth worker.
There was less tagging and
random violence in the area since
the hangout in Hornby had been
implemented, Ms Murray said.
Sensei passes flair for
OUR PEOPLE: Paul Stokes has taught Jiu Jitsu in Bromley for
years at the Old Scout Hall. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
Paul Stokes has been involved with
Bromley’s Furui Ryu jiu jitsu dojo since
the 1970s and has been a coach since
the mid-90s. Noah Graham spoke to
him about the evolution of the martial art
and how it has influenced him and his
students
How did you get into jiu
jitsu?
I was playing rugby for a
few years and my old man
knew a guy who was running
a judo club at Bryndwr
YMCA, except it wasn’t
judo, it was jiu jitsu. It was
something else to do besides
rugby. So I started there in
1979 and I’ve stuck at it ever
since then.
What was it about jiu jitsu
that you liked?
I think at the time, it was
very realistic. There was no
gloves, it was full contact.
There were knocked out
teeth and I liked how it was
realistic as a form of selfdefence.
The discipline was
great. Very, very disciplined.
The instructor at the time
would go around punch you
in the guts and kick you in
the guts. It used to be a blood
SOUTHERN VIEW
bath really to be honest when
I started.
We have light gloves these
days, you can’t send people
away with cut eyes and broken
noses too much. We used
to use real knives, too, for
knife defences. We were told
to throw and stab each other.
I just liked that part of it, you
know, it got the adrenaline
going. We would be doing
lapel breakouts or something
and the sensei would shout
out and the whole class
would go all out for one to
two minutes. It could be two
on one, or three on one – it
was a massive brawl. Then
you would stop and you
would go back to what you
were doing. You’d have your
guard ready because, if you
were doing something, the
other guy would smack you
in the face or kick you.
martial arts onto apprentices
The self-defence training
you learned – have you used it
outside of a dojo?
I used to do a bit of bouncing
and had to use it against knives
to machetes to general street
fighting. Only as self defence,
though. I never used to go out
looking for it. I bounced at the
Dux Deluxe and the Redwood.
Dux was a crazy place to bounce
at. There was a wide variety
of different people from your
yuppies to your gang members.
It could be quite a rough place
at times, really. Especially on a
Friday. I used to help teach the
bouncers as well.
Furui ryu is a specific form of
jiu jitsu, what’s different about
it compared to other forms of
jiu jitsu.
Jiu jitsu comes as a mixture of
judo, karate and aikido. Some
forms of jiu jitsu are more aikido,
some are more judo and some
are more karate. Most styles
these days are more aikido. Our
style has been more designed for
the street and to be as realistic
as possible without having too
many injuries. By being realistic,
we teach people proper self-defence
that can be used to protect
themselves. These days we’re not
too hard on the students. We still
do full contact in gradings, but
we wear a lot of gloves. We also
do free fighting occasionally.
How difficult is it to get a
black belt in jiu jitsu?
Very hard in our club. We
don’t give away grades. We
always make sure they do their
time. If you train twice a week
for the whole five and a half years
you’d get it, but most people are
more like six to eight years. I got
my black belt in 1985 after about
six years.
Can you tell me a bit about
your family?
Both of my parents are Scottish.
My mum’s passed away
but my dad’s still going. Dad
was a painter and I learnt my
trade from him as a painter. I
was brought up in the Redwood
area and stayed in Christchurch
all my life, a part from a ninemonth
trip to Australia.
What is coaching like?
There’s always people coming
up through the grades who you
can’t let down so you just carry
on. We have a kids class as well
as an adult class so you’ve just
got to be there for them. We create
a lot of discipline in our class
and respect for each other so
no one loses their cool and they
behave themselves outside of the
FAMILY: Paul
Stokes has
spent decades
training at
Bromley’s Furui
Ryu jiu jitsu
dojo, which
has taught him
discipline and
focus, attributes
he has passed
down to his
students.
dojo. They’re all aware they have
to be responsible. You get a sense
of accomplishment from watching
the kids improve to a black
belt. To watch their attitudes
change through discipline and
the pride of seeing them getting
their grade – it’s amazing. We’ve
had some kids who have had to
fail their grading and they cry,
and I just say, “look, you’re not
a loser, you’re only a loser if you
don’t come back”. They come
back and they get the grade, and
the smile on their face, it is just
amazing to see that.
How popular is jiu jitsu in
New Zealand?
It’s getting more and more
popular through cage fighting.
We were the first jiu jitsu club in
Christchurch and, since then,
clubs have been popping up
everywhere. However, today jiu
jitsu is associated with Brazilian
jiu jitsu, with cage fighting and
MMA. But our style is quite different
to that.
How did the club start?
It started in 1967 as Canterbury
unarmed combat school.
And then when John Bonniface
came down in 1968, he got graded
up to black belt to go to Japan
and trained under Sugawara
Geshu and came back with fuji
ryu jiu jitsu and came up with
our style in the early 1970s.
What do you like to do in
your spare time?
I used to do an hour weights
in the club everyday, but my
joints don’t allow me to do that
anymore. I’d go down and do a
bit of boat fishing every chance
I could get if I do have some free
time. Fishing is a bit more relaxing.
Try to knuckle around with
the guitar a bit when I can. I’ve
put that down for a while now.
It’s been sitting there too long
now. I learnt guitar about 20 to
30 years ago and I do need to get
back into it.
Soil bleeds into waterways
Cashmere
Stream Care
Group chairman
Ken Rouse talks
about the effect
the Port Hills
fires has had
on nearby rivers and what
needs to be done to save
them
THe Cashmere Stream,
downstream of Sutherlands
Rd, passes through rural land
for some 2km and arrives at
the confluence with Hoon Hay
Valley waterway in gin clear
condition.
But it is at this stage that the
Cashmere Stream begins its
death by 1000 cuts from the
inputs from tributaries on the
Port Hills.
There are three bogey tributaries
for Cashmere Stream with
large deposits of loess soil.
These are the Cashmere Valley,
Hoon Hay Valley and Worsleys
Valley waterways. In periods of
no rain, such as in summer, these
tributaries have little or no flow
but each of them bleed sediment
into the catchment during heavy
rain events.
The worst is the site of an active
commercial Adventure Park
and, unfortunately, this site is
severely affected with its vegetation
destroyed by the Port Hills
fires. These tributaries make
life difficult for the fresh water
inhabitants because when it
rains, they get a fresh smothering
SCORCHED:
The lack of
vegetation on
the Port Hills
means more
sediment is
running off
into nearby
waterways.
PHOTO:
SHELLEY
MCMURTRIE
of sediment. A bit like living in a
smoggy Chinese city.
Unfortunately, the fires have
burned deep into all three of the
Port Hills valleys and vegetation
that was important against erosion
has been lost. To reduce the
sediment load from the hills, we
need a two-solution approach.
1. Construct a series of large
retention structures in each valley
that will slow floodwater and
assist settlement of the heavier
sediment. Within the structure,
create deep ponds that act as
sink holes for sediment. Create
them of sufficient size and depth
so as to be useful for helicopter
firefighting needs in the future.
These structures could accommodate
pastoral farming once
established.
2. Assist the private landowners
to the extent that they want
help in replanting the lost forest
areas and grass land. In the
short-term, establishing some
sort of cover on the bare land is
critical.
Note that in the short-term and
until permanent soil stabilisation
is achieved on the critical areas of
the Port Hills, every effort must
be made to keep soil in place.
There are eco-friendly soil stabilisers
that should be applied to
sites which remain without cover
as a matter of urgency.
We said:
McDonald’s has applied
for land and resource
consent on a plot on
Ferry Rd with the aim
of building a fast food
restaurant there
You said:
Amanda White – Oh,
great idea . . . put another
fast food ‘restaurant’ in a low
socio-economic area. You’d
never see one in Cashmere/
Fendalton.
Jemma Martin – I don’t
think it’s necessary, with
two McDonald’s, a Burger
King, KFC and Subway,
all at Eastgate mall just a
few kilometres away. They
should’ve gotten something to
reflect the area.
Vivienne Murchison –
God. Just when there was a
cool village-type vibe starting
to happen there. There goes the
neighbourhood.
Stella Twentyman –
There is a Burger King, a
KFC and two McDonald’s in
Linwood . . . Go there.
Amanda Clarke – Perfect.
People can drive through and
get their McDonald’s then
park up at Woolston Park to
eat it and dump their
rubbish.
Sophia Young – There’s
one not far at Eastgate. They
don’t really need it.
Lorraine Isaacs – Hope
people go to New World and
buy real food instead.
Hayden Allan – As
bad as it is, if you want an
area to thrive put a
McDonald’s there. If they put a
KFC or a McDonald’s in New
Brighton, I’m sure it will take
off.
Rohan Bekker – Fast food
equals rubbish on the street
and in the river. Great.
Ashley Rossouw – There
is already a McDonald’s at
Eastgate mall which is a twominute
drive away. Not really
needed in my opinion.
try new experiences all within
a safe, nurturing environment.
CASPA offers working parents an
affordable after school and school
holiday programme that their
kids just love!
CASPA attributes its success to
the variety of activities on offer
as well as the convenience and
affordability for parents. CASPA
activities including sports, music,
games, drama, arts and craft as
Lindisfarne Nursery School was established
in 1987 by Tricia Cuthbert and remains part
of the Cuthbert family today. We have a large
open villa which offers pre-schoolers a great
space for lots of fun activities, and a nursery
building where the babies and toddlers can
develop and explore at their own pace.
Our registered teachers provide a
programme of wonderful activities based on
the national curriculum, Te Whariki, which
encourages a love of learning, and you will
receive regular updates about how your child
is developing.
The pre-school villa offers the children a
large open space with family and role-play
areas, areas for construction and art, a library
full of wonderful books and puzzles, and a
"classroom" area where the pre-schoolers love
to 'play schools'.
The nursery house provides the babies and
toddlers with the environment and resources
to develop their skills in the precious first two
years.
Your child will have a portfolio which will
reflect their interests, as well as show their
learning and individuality.
Morning and afternoon tea and a cooked
lunch are provided, and we are open all
year. Please call in at your convenience.
CASPA parents
enjoy peace of mind,
knowing their kids
are safe and enjoying the
benefits of a quality after
school programme. Some
parents and caregivers also
enjoy government subsidies
for CASPA. CASPA is Child
Youth and Family approved
for the OSCAR Subsidy and
in some circumstances, the full
CASPA fee will be covered by
the subsidy.
• Mark Thomas, fire risk
management officer
I KNOW I’ve repeated the
advice about looking when
cooking dozens of times
over the years and it looks
very much like it’s never
going to cease completely.
But every now and then I
despair a bit.
Like on Wednesday
when within three-and-ahalf-hours
fire trucks responded
to three different
cooking incidents.
A house completely filled
with smoke from a forgotten
pie in the microwave
in Sockburn was followed
by a pot on the stove, again
filling the house in Kotare
St and a further incident
in Bryndwr where smoke
inhalation was the result
FROM BEATLES’ classics
to Elvis Presley’s best
hits, a variety of songs are
sparking strong memories
for those experiencing
memory loss.
The Keepsake Singers
group meets once a week
and helps people with
memory loss or dementia
to sing along to 20s, 30s,
40s and 50s classic hits.
The Muse Community
Music Trust member
Jacinta O’Reilly said the
hour-long sessions are a
great way for older adults
experiencing some form
of memory loss to have a
joint activity with friends
and family.
“It’s a lovely thing for
someone to be able to do
an activity with someone
who is losing their
memory.”
She said with other community
activities people
for the elderly occupants.
Any of these could have
been much worse.
A life or a house gone.
But all of them were
preventable.
Stay in the kitchen.
The smell of burning in
your home can be frightening
for anyone.
More so if you’re blind.
The occupant of a house
in Addington thankfully
did the exact right thing,
again on Wednesday, by
experiencing memory loss
often lack confidence with
most activities but the
relaxed nature of the sing
along allows them to freely
join in.
The songs include a
range of pop hits which
resonate with the participants,
Ms O’Reilly said.
She said the members
are able to sing most of the
lyrics as it taps into older
memories which are often
preserved.
phoning 111 and having
the local crew there within
minutes.
Turned out to be a tea
towel smouldering on an
element.
The potential here was a
bit frightening.
I’ve not mentioned arson
here for a long time.
It’s still occurring but
the removal of most of the
empty houses in the red
zone has made it less visible
or newsworthy.
A drum of diesel spread
along the road in the
early hours last Sunday in
Wigram was lit and left by
whatever morons thought
it was clever.
They’re still out there. As
stupid and dangerous as
ever.

Denture technicians keep abreast of industry
developments
As registered members of the New
Zealand Dental Council, Ryan Carlton
and his fellow technicians at Dentures
Plus in Innes Road are required to
undertake verified training at various
courses every year, to upskill and keep
abreast of new developments in the
industry.
“For example, our technicians Thomas
Gu and Nicole Yee will be attending a
two-day course later this year on the
fitting of first-time dentures,” Ryan says.
In addition, Nicole has recently spent
four weeks in India as part of a course
she is undertaking on maxilo facial work,
which deals with artificial eyes, ears and
noses.
“This is a service we may potentially
offer in the future,” Ryan says.
Ryan himself has recently returned
from the International Dental Show,
which was held in Cologne, Germany.
“It’s the largest trade show in the world
for the industry, with manufacturers
and suppliers from all over the world
showcasing their products. There were
over 2300 stands – it was really eyeopening.”
Ryan says he was particularly interested
in how digital technology is being
incorporated into dentistry, for example
3D printing being used at different stages
of denture manufacture such as the crown
and bridge.
“It’s still in the very early stages, and it
needs more development, but that’s where
it’s heading,” Ryan says.
He believes that in the future, people
that make and fit dentures will be seen
as architects rather than technicians,
with patients being able to download the
pattern for their dentures the architect
has designed on computer, and print
them on a 3D machine.
In the meantime, he emphasises the
importance of keeping dentures clean.
Dentures Plus offers a full range of
products for denture cleaning including
denture cleaners, brushes and denture
baths for soaking the dentures.
Ryan particularly recommends Caldent
denture cleaner, as it is non-abrasive and
effectively removes stains, calculus and
plaque.
“It works wonders,” he says. “Years of
stains and plaque can be removed with
this product.”
It can be purchased through
the Dentures Plus website, www.
denturesplus.co.nz, for delivery anywhere
in Christchurch and throughout the
country.
Dentures Plus, 396 Innes Road, is
open Monday to Thursday 8am-5pm
and Friday 8am-2pm. To make an
appointment for a consultation on
denture fitting or repair, phone
Halswell squads head to
large youth tournament
• By Andrew King
FOR THE first time, Halswell
United will send teams to
compete in an Australian football
tournament in Canberra.
An under-14 girls side and
under-13 boys team will head to
the Kanga Cup in July.
It is the largest international
youth football tournament in the
Southern Hemisphere, with more
than 375 teams from a number of
different countries competing.
Halswell United general
manager Sam Bunn said it was all
about player development and it
was the teams that wanted to go.
Bunn said the girls team was
looking to win in their maiden
outing, while the boys would be
competitive.
SPORTS
WARM-UP: Halswell United’s under-13 boys and under-14
girls Kanga Cup sides played out a 1-1 draw against each other
on Sunday as part of their preparation for July’s Kanga Cup
competition in Canberra.
“It is all about experience, and
this will provide quite a bit of
that,” she said.
The cup competition started
in 1991 in Sydney with about 35
teams competing before it was
moved to its current home in
Canberra in 1993.
Previous participating teams
have hailed from Australia, United
States, England, Denmark, Italy,
Russia, Georgia, South Africa,
South Korea, Chinese Taipei,
Malaysia, Philippines, India,
Indonesia, East Timor, Fiji and
New Zealand.
looking for sponsorship of
its two Kanga Cup squads.
South African leads Cashmere first XI
• By Andrew King
SOUTH AFRICAN Lyle
Matthysen thought he was
destined to be a rugby player
when he moved to New Zealand
12 years ago, but a chance
encounter with the Cashmere
Wanders led to a love of
football.
Matthysen, 18, is now captain
of the Cashmere High first XI
and a regular starter in the
midfield for the Cashmere
Technical Mainland Premier
League side.
Born in Cape Town, in the
heart of Stormers country,
Matthysen left when he was sixyears-old.
A friend took him to
a training when he was younger
and he just fell in love with the
beautiful game.
He has been playing top grade
football for the past four years,
but still remembers one of his
first blunders after making the
Cashmere Tech side.
“I was through on the keeper
and totally tripped over the ball
Cashmere face St Andrew’s in second round
• By Andrew King
CASHMERE HIGH will play
St Andrew’s tomorrow after
recording a solid 3-1 win over
Christchurch Boys’ High in the
opening round of the Connetics
schools premier first XI
competition at the Christchurch
Football Centre.
Cashmere had a number of
players on debut in its squad,
with coach Tom Wilkinson
saying Luke Tolan playing in
central midfield had a brilliant
start earning him man of the
match.
“He controlled the game very
well last night and was a rock in
front of the defence,” Wilkinson
in front a quite a few people,”
he said.
It did not deter him and now
he sees his name in the starting
SKIPPER: Lyle Matthysen
is now captain of the
Cashmere High first XI and a
regular starter in the midfield
for Cashmere Technical.
11 quite often.
“It is something I really want
to pursue as a career,” he said.
He said the natural progression
for most Kiwis is through
an American college on a scholarship,
a dream he is very keen
to chase.
“Ryan Nelson played for
Cashmere and is a huge role
model to me,” he said.
He has had the privilege
of playing with former Wellington
Phoenix and All White
defender Ben Sigmund and
Canterbury United FC and
All White mid-fielder Aaron
Clapham.
“Clapham is still in the
Cashmere Tech side and is
always giving us plenty of good
advice,” he said.
GOOD START: Cashmere
recorded a solid 3-1 win over
CBHS in the opening round
of the schools premier first
XI competition.
said.
“The game was fast-paced in
the first half with both sides
battling well.”
Wilkinson said the team will
be looking to work on consistency
as they look ahead to
the game against St Andrew’s
tomorrow.
The last time Cashmere
played St Andrew’s, the match
ended in a 2-2 draw.
Both teams are undefeated
going into the second round
with St Andrew’s beating Burnside
4-2.
“They will be a tough opposition
and we are relishing the
challenge,” Wilkinson said.
The game starts at 5.45pm.

AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
New and quality used tyres
for most makes & models
If you need new tyres for your vehicle,
JCM Direct is the place to go.
This family-run, independent tyre
business in Birmingham Drive specialises
in new and quality second-hand tyres.
The business is owned by husband and
wife Athol and Julie Hurst, with Julie being
the one who runs the day-to-day operation
and fits the tyres for customers, which is
unusual in the male-dominated industry,
she says.
They stock a large selection of new tyres
from a wide range of suppliers to suit your
wheelbarrow, car, van, 4wd or trailer.
“There are very few brands we can’t do,”
Julie says.
“We also have an excellent selection of
quality second-hand 4WD tyres.
Other services JCM Direct offers include
puncture repairs, supply and fitting of
new and second-hand alloy wheels, wheel
alignments, replacement factory steel
rims, rim repairs and lights.
“We also specialise in old rims, from the
1930s to the 1970s, which people purchase
for caravans and old trailers. The modern
rims won’t fit those,” Julie says.
“JCM Direct also do a lot of matching
rims and tyres, so customers don’t have to
buy a complete new set if only one needs
replacing.”
We can create packages to accommodate
all budgets, with finance available via Q
Card or Farmers Card.
JCM Direct is now in a new location,
on the corner of Birmingham Drive and
Hands Road. Their former premises were
further along Hands Road.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday
9.30am-5pm and Saturday 9.30am-1pm.
