Mohiuddin panel wins FBCCI poll with 34 seats

Incumbent vice-president of Federation
of Bangladesh Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI)
Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin will
lead the country’s apex trade body
for the next two years.
His panel, the Sammilito Ganatantrik
Parishad, bagged a majority
of the seats in the election to the
board of directors held yesterday.
The Election Board chairman
Professor Ali Ashraf announced at
11pm that the Mohiuddin-led panel
members won 34 out of the 36 directorial
seats.
Mohiuddin had been nominated
as a director from the Bangladesh
Garment Manufacturers and Exporters
Association.
The biennial election to elect
the office bearers for the 2017-19
tenure began at 9am and ran until
5pm, with no break in between, at
Bangabandhu International Conference
Centre in Dhaka.
This year, two panels contested
for only 18 directorial posts of the
Association Group, as the remaining
18 directors of the Chamber Group,
from Sammilito Ganatantrik Parishad,
had been elected unopposed.
The other panel, Babosayee
Oikya Forum, which is led by Qazi
Irteza Hasan, bagged only two
posts – one is Irteza Hasan and the
other is Helena Jahangir with the
National Association of Small and

arrested for raping toddler

Police arrested a 14-year-old boy
from Bagerhat’s Rakhalgachhi
yesterday for raping a threeyear-old
girl.
According to the victim’s
mother, she left the toddler at
home to get some chores done
on Wednesday afternoon.
The accused, a neighbour,
took her inside his house
promising to give her a mobile
phone to play with, and raped
her.
The toddler, who can
barely speak properly, told her
mother that she had been hurt
by the boy.

family alleged that she had
been raped, the case was filed
with Sadar police station on
Friday for attempted rape.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral
Nizamuddin Ahmed
has left Dhaka on Saturday to
attend the International Maritime
Defence Exhibition and
Conference (IMDEX) 2017 in
Singapore.
Besides attending the IM-
DEX, the navy chief will also
attend the International Maritime
Review and Fifth International
Maritime Security
Conference (IMSC) in Singapore.
He will also meet Admiral

lord of United Kingdom, Rear
Admiral Frank Trojahn, chief
of naval staff of Denmark, Rear
Admiral Lai Chung Han, chief
of the Republic of Singapore
Navy and Vice Admiral Arie

Netherlands.
The navy chief is scheduled
to be back on May 18.
Meanwhile, Shadhinota,
a ship of Bangladesh Navy, is
already sailing in the water of
Singapore for attending the International
Maritime Defence
Exhibition. •
