Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. It occurs in
one out of every 691 live births with more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the
United States.Down syndrome occurs in both boys and girls and all races and economic levels.
People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions such as
congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, gastrointestinal disease, Alzheimer's
disease, childhood leukemia, and thyroid conditions. Many of these conditions are treatable, so
most people with Down syndrome lead healthy lives.
While the age of the mother can be a factor, 80% of people with Down syndrome are born to
parents under the age of 35 because more younger women have babies.
Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of
chromosome 21. This additional genetic material changes the course of development and causes
the characteristics we have associated with Down Syndrome. One in every 691 babies in the U.S.
is born with Down syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition. There are
more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the U.S.
Down syndrome is usually identified at birth or shortly thereafter. Initially the diagnosis is based
on physical characteristics that are commonly seen in babies with Down syndrome. These
include low muscle tone, a single crease across the palm of the hand, a slightly flattened facial
profile and an upward slant to the eyes. The diagnosis must be confirmed by a chromosome
study (karyotype)
