Biomedical research (or experimental medicine) is in general simply known as medical
research. It is the basic research (also called bench science or bench research), applied
research, or translational research conducted to aid and support the development of knowledge
in the field of medicine. An important kind of medical research is clinical research, which is
distinguished by the involvement of patients. Both clinical and preclinical research phases exist
in the pharmaceutical industry drug development pipelines, where the clinical phase is denoted
by the term clinical trial. However, only part of the clinical or preclinical research is oriented
towards a specific pharmaceutical purpose. The need for fundamental and mechanistic
understanding, diagnostics, medical devices and non-pharmaceutical therapies means that
medical research is much more than just trying to make new drugs.
The most basic medical research is a rapidly evolving area that owes much to basic biology and
is given names such as Human Biosciences by universities.
A new paradigm to biomedical research is being termed translational research, which focuses
on iterative feedback loops between the basic and clinical research domains to accelerate
knowledge translation from the bedside to the bench, and back again. Medical research may
involve doing research into public health, biochemistry, clinical research, microbiology,
physiology, oncology, surgery and research into many other non-communicable diseases such
as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
The increased longevity of humans over the past century can be significantly attributed to
advances resulting from medical research. Among the major benefits of medical research have
been vaccines for measles and polio, insulin treatment for diabetes, classes of antibiotics for
treating a host of maladies, medication for high blood pressure, new surgical techniques such
as microsurgery, and increasingly successful treatments for cancer. Many challenges remain,
however, including the appearance of antibiotic resistance and the obesity epidemic.
Most of the research in the field is pursued by biomedical scientists, however significant
contributions are made by other biologists, as well as chemists and physicists.
Who Knew?
1) An earthquake on Dec. 16, 1811 caused parts of the Mississippi River to flow
backwards! This earthquake with the magnitude of 7.5 to
7.9. It remains to be the most powerful earthquake that
ever hit the east on the Rocky mountains. It was thought it
would occur in a another two-hundred years, but they
have not found any signs of that happening anytime soon.
It is also called a fluvial tsunami. Some thing other things
that happened due to the earthquake was sulfur leaked
out from underground pockets and river banks vanished,
flooding thousands of acres of forests.
2) Children laugh about 400 times a day, while adults laugh
on average only 15 times a day. This shows that children are
mostly happier than adults. They have more things to laugh than
adults. The adults might just be more mature but they should
laugh too. The kids also find a lot of other things funny.
3) The Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most iconic
dinosaurs known to man, thanks to films such as
Jurassic Park. Roaming Earth 68 to 66 million years
ago, the fearsome giant measured in between 4.6 to 6
meters in height and 12 meters long, with a ferocious
set of teeth, perfectly designed for slicing into other
dinosaurs. In 2005, scientists dissolved part of a T-rex
bone in acid to see what it would reveal. To their
surprise, they found soft tissue with sections that could possibly harbor DNA. The
Tyrannosaurus went extinct about 65 million years ago.
Recipe for Mac & Cheese
INGREDIENTS
1 (8 ounce) package macaroni
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup cream
1
⁄ 2 teaspoon salt
fresh ground black pepper, to taste
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded good quality
1
⁄ 2 cup breadcrumbs, buttered
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
2. Cook and drain macaroni according to package directions; set aside.
3. In a large saucepan melt butter.
4. Add flour mixed with salt and pepper, using a whisk to stir until well blended.
5. Pour milk and cream in gradually; stirring constantly.
6. Bring to boiling point and boil 2 minutes (stirring constantly).
7. Reduce heat and cook (stirring constantly) 10 minutes.
8. Add shredded cheddar little by little and simmer an additional 5 minutes, or until cheese melts.
9. Turn off flame.
10. Add macaroni to the saucepan and toss to coat with the cheese sauce.
11. Transfer macaroni to a buttered baking dish.
12. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
13. Bake 20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
14. (You can also freeze this recipe in ziplock bags for later use - once you have mixed the macaroni
along with the cheese sauce allow to cool to room temperature before adding to your freezer - I
generally pull it out the night before and allow macaroni and cheese to reach room temperature; I
then add the macaroni and cheese to a buttered baking dish, sprinkle with breadcrumbs and then
bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until golden brown on top and bubbling.
I chose Mac & Cheese because I like it and it is easy to make and it tastes good. You also don't need
many ingredients and you can make it quickly.
