There is a lovely home just down the
street from us with beautiful, longstemmed
clusters of tulips growing in
the front landscaping. One cluster is peach
colored and the other two a deep rosy red.
Very pretty.
I have three rather
pathetic looking
blooms. Not three
clusters, just three tulips.
With stems about
eight inches long and
reddish blooms. That’s
it. Not memorable.
While out walking
one evening this week,
the fragrance of spring
blossoms greeted us
often, causing me to

inhale large, deep breaths, trying to savor
the scent, as spring is so quickly gone.
A few blocks from the home with tulips,
we walked past beautiful purple phlox in
a raised bed. They were creeping over the
edge of the retaining wall, softening the
harshness of the rock.
Another home along the route already
had containers completed by the front
door, and the homeowner was finishing up
a planter by their mailbox as the last rays of
sunshine filtered through the western sky.
Back home, I stopped to check on three
clusters of native grasses by our front door
that my husband and I transplanted last
fall. You never know if those efforts are
going to survive a harsh Iowa winter, but it
appears these did.
I was delighted with the grasses, but horrified
by the unwanted volunteers I saw
growing between our brick edging and
the landscaping rock. These weren’t pretty
little flowers, but hundreds of little weeds
just emerging as well as tiny morning glory
vines already tangling their way onto the
shrubs.
Spring has barely arrived, and yet the
weeds are taking over. Guess I’d better get
busy.

the sparkle of emeralds, rubies
and diamonds is a ballet gem in

The Royal Ballet production —

“I’ve never seen a ballet, but I’m
pretty excited for this one,” said
Amanda Schindler, performing arts
director at PLAC.
Jewels is a masterclass in the many
luminous facets of classical ballet and
The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso
choreography of Balanchine, the intensity
of the soloists and the percussion
of the entire company.
The ballet classic is broken down
into three parts — Emeralds, Rubies
and Diamonds.
The French Romantic music of
Gabriel Fauré provides the impetus
for the subtlety and lyricism of Emeralds,
while the fire of Rubies comes
from Igor Stravinsky and the jazz-age
energy of New York. Grandeur and
elegance complete the ballet with the
splendor of Imperial Russian and the
peerless music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
in Diamonds.
“I’m most excited to see how they’re
going to incorporate the different
types of jewels and bring that to life
onstage through dance, music, set
design, lighting and all the different
theatrical elements,” Schindler said. “I
think it will be really cool to see.”
The production runs two and-a-half
hours, including two intervals and a
15-minute introduction.
Balanchine, a Russian ballet master
and refugee from the Soviet Union,
created Jewels in 1967 for the New
York City Ballet as a celebration of his
belief and devotion in the art form he
loved — classical ballet.
“A ballet of this caliber isn’t readily
available in this area, and it’s a great
way and very accessible experience for
people to view a type of performing
arts that they might not have otherwise
considered,” Schindler said.
She hopes those attending will enjoy
not only the ballet itself, but the
dance and music aspects as well.
“I know in the music world, they’re
very popular,” Schindler said of the
composers. “It will be fun to see their
music set to dance.” F

Bringing back the classics
Riviera Theatre revives films from
1930s, ’40s and ’50s
“La La Land” brought the musical
back to the forefront of film this
year, earning several Academy
Award nominations. One of the many
films it drew nostalgic comparisons
to was the 1952 classic “Singin’ in the
Rain.”
That film starred Gene Kelly
and Debbie Reynolds and is being
brought back to the big screen this
weekend in Emmetsburg.
The Palo Alto Arts Council, with
the help of a grant from the Palo Alto
Gaming Development Corp., is sponsoring
“Classics at the Riviera,” which
will feature a classic film at the Riviera
Theatre on the second Sunday of each
month, beginning with “Singin’ in the
Rain.”
Admission is free of charge and the
movies will start at 4:30 p.m.
One of the goals of the arts council
for the program is to bring a different
form of the arts to the community.
Some people may remember seeing
these movies in the past or have simply
heard of them. For many they will
be completely new.
“We hope a lot of people find out
they love old films, whether they’ve

program. “We picked audience favorites
that can be enjoyed whether you
are seeing them for the first time or
remember enjoying them from your

“Singin’ in the Rain” was picked to
start off the series in part because of
the season. Falling on Mother’s Day,
Merrill thinks it will be a movie to go
see with Mom after brunch. The hope
for the whole series is that it appeals
to all different age groups and draws
people from different towns to Emmetsburg.

like the type of grapes
one would expect at a vineyard.
No worries, these aren’t the
grapes that go into Calico Skies’
award-winning vintages.
Rather, it’s the title of the next
dinner theatre show put on
by Upstage Productions being
hosted Friday, May 19, at the
vineyard and winery just outside
Inwood.
“We’ve stayed with them since
we’ve opened. They’re pretty
much the best at doing this type
of show,” said Calico Skies owner
Will Kimberley. “We’ve never
had a show that wasn’t funny or
that people didn’t enjoy. In four
years, we’ve also had no repeats,
so it’s always fresh, new and
funny.”
Tickets are $45 per person,

social hour at 5:30 p.m. During
this time, the actors will mingle
as the crowd filters in and determines
who might be likely
participants in the evening’s
entertainment.
“There is a little bit of audience
interaction, but with the
format most can just sit and
watch a really funny show. The
actors do a good job figuring
out who does want to join in
and have a part,” Kimberley
said. “That part is always fun
and a bit impromptu and sometimes
becomes the best part of
the show.”
After Act I, there is a break for
dinner catered by The Riviera
out of Brandon, SD. After Act II,
there is another intermission for
dessert, then Act III brings the
resolution to the show.
“We don’t usually know a lot
of plot details or scripts ahead
of time, just the theme,” Kimberley
said. “This one is based
off classic material, but some
are more modern. There is always
enough unknown to have
great surprises in every show,
and we expect this one to be
another good one.” F
