I see them—blue caps like sterility,
needles wide as her pupils—holding razors
that grind their teeth. Wisps of blonde,
barely gravitational, kiss tile fl oor
and I try to remember where
I was when she was born, where
else there was to be before a daughter.
Th ick black lines draw in marker on her head
swelling with blood and car exhaust—I feel
my hands clenched over the steering wheel,
invisible fi shhooks tugging my eyelids.
Th ey push her past me and I imagine
scalpels and ten blades; they say
they’ll relieve the pressure building
deep in her brain. Fix her and maybe
part of me with titanium, or something
else I won’t be able to see. I try to remember
what they said, but her anesthesia
numbs my mind as lights overhead
expose brain the color of newborn skin.
