WELCOME TO THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
4
York is a place like Cheltenham in
many ways. Picturesque, historic
and a tourist magnet for the area. It
is also on the edge of the heartland
of rugby league – though less on
the edge than Gloucestershire
of course. Founded in 1868, the
club has been through much and
George Cowburn’s article on page
six gives an insightful flavour of
that journey.
Their struggles at the end of last
season and into the off-season
were well documented with the
lack of a home venue striking
a chord with the All Golds who
themselves are working towards
establishing a home base from
which they can operate.
York, of course contested the
League 1 Cup Final last season
after defeating us in the semi
and we were disappointed not to
make the final this time after last
week’s defeat by the Crusaders.
Hopefully, the players will be able
to make up for that loss and take
the league points today.
Aside from George’s piece, this
issue of the All Gold extends
the Flame of the West page,
geographically at least, into Wales
where Ian Golden outlines the
changes in the structure of the
Welsh game following the demise
of the Conference League South
and return of the three Welsh
clubs that competed there.
The summer really starts this
weekend as the west of England
league kicks off with the annual
9s tournament in Swindon. Next
week the league campaign begins
in earnest and we wish every
team good luck and an enjoyable
season.
International RL is in focus this
weekend with the mid-season
international between England
and Samoa featuring on a triple
bill with Fiji playing Tonga and
PNG facing the Cook Islands on
the undercard. Fixtures like these
are arguably more important for
the Pacific nations as they aim
to strengthen their ‘brand’ and
reduce the lure of the Kangaroo
and Kiwi jerseys to their better
players.
How much of a benefit to England
is a point much argued over in the
UK. The RFL are streaming the
game on their website (for a fee)
as they recognise the requirement
to broadcast the national team’s
matches.
A strong international game is
essential for the growth of rugby
league as a national sport so
maybe the penny has dropped
with the powers that be? Could
this be the start of a realisation
that
However, Super League clubs
have already voiced concerns
about losing players for a game
and the risk of injuries, though the
England side has lost both its likely
starting halfbacks even before
they got to the airport.
Next step would be to rationalise
the season by ditching the Super
8s and having top four play-offs
after each team plays the other
home and away and plays a game
in a Magic weekend. But again the
clubs would bemoan the loss of
revenue from the shorter calendar.
A shorter season could leave
the way open for end of season
tours and scheduled international
tournaments like the Four Nations,
European Championships and
World Cup to further increase the
growth of the game.
Indoors, it’s good to see the Severn
Stars Netball side finding its feet in
the Vitality Netball Superleague.
After two consecutive victories
including a 66-62 win over
champions Surrey Storm, they
were brought down to earth with
a 59-33 loss to Team Bath.
The Stars’ hopes of ending the
season in the top four play off
positions were dented by that
result and at the time of writing
the eighth-placed Stars were
preparing for a trip to the Ricoh
Arena to face second-placed
Wasps Netball. Their next home
match is Saturday 6 May, at the
University of Worcester Arena ,
7.30pm centre-pass as they say.
KNIGHTS OF THE CITY OF YORK
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
Although originally founded in 1868 as a joint
Association and Rugby Football Club it was to
be the 1901/2 season before York were admitted
to the Northern Union - the predecessor of
today’s RFL.
For the first few seasons the club did not have
a ground but had portable goal posts which
they would put up wherever they found a pitch.
Finally, a permanent pitch was secured on
Knavesmire.
Their early years were fairly uneventful and it
took them three years for the club to record
their first victory, and that was in an association
football match against York Training College.
Results picked up in the mid-1870s as the club
attracted a higher standard of player. In 1877,
York was among several leading Yorkshire clubs
who inaugurated the Yorkshire Challenge Cup. In
the first season 16 teams battled it out for the
T’owd Tin Pot, with York eventually losing out to
Halifax in the final
However, financial problems forced the club
to merge with York Melbourne and as their
fortunes improved, they acquired a plot of land
at Clarence street in the City and gradually
developed it into a neat and compact stadium.
Still members of the RFU, the club was eventually
by financial necessity forced into joining the
Northern Union and played their first game on
30 April 1898 but it was not until 1901 that they
were finally admitted.
There were some highlights in the club’s early
years with a 5-3 win over the famous All Golds
at Fishergate and a 5-5 draw against the first
Australian touring side in 1908/9 at Clarence
Street. Success over a touring side came again
with a 9-3 victory against the 1921/2 Kangaroo
tourists. The first silverware followed in the
1922/3 season when York beat Batley 5-0 to win
the Yorkshire Cup earning the nickname “the
Dreadnoughts” during this period.
The 1930s was York’s finest period with a
losing appearance by 22-8 to Halifax in the
1931 Challenge Cup Final at
Wembley and three Yorkshire
Cup Finals (two wins) plus a
highest ever league position
of third in the 1932/3 season.
The team was packed with
Welshmen such as Norman
Fender, Dai Prosser, Arthur
Lloyd, Mel Rosser, Billy Thomas
and winger Harold Thomas
the scorer of both York’s tries
at Wembley. (Many Welshmen
“came north” in the 1930s as
the economic depression of
the 1920s and 1930s hit South
Wales badly). A gradual decline
in fortunes was punctuated
only by two losing Yorkshire
Cup Finals in 1957/8 and 1978/9.
From the 1973/4 season the
league was split into firstly two
and later three divisions which
gave some of the less famous
clubs a chance of silverware.
York duly won the 2nd Division
in 1980/81 finishing three points
above Wigan in the famous
Lancashire club’s only season in
a lower division.
Sadly York were relegated back
to the 2nd Division the season
after from where the club
reached the semi finals of the
Challenge Cup in 1984, gallantly
losing to Wigan 14-8.
1989 was a landmark year for
the wrong reasons when the
York v Wigan - 1984 Challenge Cup Semi Final
club had to sell its old Clarence
Street ground and move out
of the city to Monk’s Cross in
the Ryedale district, changing
their name to Ryedale York. On
the advent of summer rugby
league in 1996 they changed
their name to York Wasps but
this had little effect on their
fortunes.
In the 2000s things went
from bad to worse as the
club suffered a 10-6 defeat
to amateurs West Hull in the
Challenge Cup and in March
2002 the club folded, resigning
from the league that month.
Happily, the club returned
the next season as York City
Knights with new colours of
blue and white and a mix of
success and failure, promotions
and relegations, a League 2
(third tier) Grand Final win and
the disappointment of finishing
top of the third tier in 2014 but
losing out on promotion in the
play offs.
Homeless in 2015 having
moved out of Monk’s Cross,
the threat of closure once more
loomed over York with doubts
as to their participation in the
2017 season. Thankfully the
club made it to the starting
line with new owners, reverting
back to their traditional amber
and black colours and with
respected coach James Ford
at the helm and settled at the
Bootham Crescent Ground
shared with the local football
club.
York in all its many guises has
been a nursery for up and
coming players. The likes of
Kevin Harkin and Graeme
Steadman graced their colours
while latterday Super League
stars Greg Miniken at Castleford
and Kris Brining at Salford owe
their current success to the
club.
7
entertaining newcomers Fulham in 1981
Hopefully, better times will soon
be round the corner for the club
from the wonderful city of York.
ineligible to play in last week’s League 1 Cup
their loan deals last week, with Nield signing
The All Golds play host to York City Knights
Coach Lee Greenwood will be looking for
a big response from his players, after what
was a very disappointing performance
against North Wales Crusaders. Despite the
poor showing, however, he says the side can
still take the fact that they only lost on goalkicks
as a positive: “I don’t know whether or
not they thought they were already in the
final, but the attitude of how they’ve turned
up there is really annoying.
“For us to be good we need to do all the little
things right and need to be tough and get
stuck in and if we don’t do that then we’re
very limited and not good enough. Mentality
wise, we weren’t smart enough and came
with a poor attitude, so I’m pretty disgusted
with the first half. We tried to come up with
a response in the second half but once you
leave yourself chasing a
game like that, it only takes
a couple of small things
to upset your rhythm and
there were a lot of those in
the second half.
“That’s probably over the
course of the game the
worst 80 minutes we’ve
put together and we’ve
only lost on goal kicks so as
down as I am I’m not feeling
too bad cause we probably
won’t play worse than that.”
Looking ahead to the York
game, Lee also said that
while they will target the
game as a win, it is down
to the players to come
with the right mindset: “We
target every game as a win. We’ve done that
for two seasons previous and we’ll continue
to do that. We as coaching staff will put the
effort in behind the scenes to put a plan in
place. We’ll do the right things in training
that should help the team win but we
obviously need the players
to do their part as well. But
the way we are, we need
the whole squad to commit
and turn up with the right
attitude.”
The visitors are boosted
with the addition of former
Hull FC winger Callum
Lancaster, who could be in
line for a debut against the
Golden Fern. The 20-yearold,
who stormed onto
the Super League back
in 2014 with eight tries in
five games, has signed on
a trial basis with a view for
a permanent contract. Hull
centre Nick Rawsthorne
also extended his loan deal
this week.
YORK CITY KNIGHTS
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
The Knights have had a relatively hit and
miss season so far, which is particularly
surprising for a side with so much potential.
Early losses to North Wales Crusaders and
Barrow were balanced out by consecutive
wins, firstly against South Wales Ironmen,
before a Challenge Cup upset over
Championship outfit Rochdale. They have,
however, only won one out of their last
four and seem unable to get a firm grip on
any sort of form. They visit the Prince of
Wales on the back of a second heavy loss
to Barrow, and will be looking to turn their
fortunes around and make a push to get in
the mix for promotion.
BACKS
York’s back division are their most lethal
weapon, with a good mix of experience
and flair. Harry Tyson-Wilson has been a
consistent feature in the halves throughout,
however, James Ford has struggled when it
comes to finding him a permanent partner.
Jonny Presley, Danny Sowerby and Liam
Harris have all been tried in that position,
with limited success so far. Should the ball
fall to the outside backs, however, then the
threats are endless. Former Warrington flyer
David Foggin-Johnston and veteran Tommy
Saxton are both proven finishers, while Nick
Rawsthorne, former All Gold Nev Morrison
and James Haynes are all proven providers.
Ash Robson also consistently offers himself as
an option in attack. The Knights also this week
announced the capture of former Hull winger
Callum Lancaster on a month’s trial. He is yet
another proven try-scorer with eight tries in his
first five Super League matches as a 17-yearold.
Limited opportunities on Humberside
forced him to look elsewhere, however, and
James Ford will undoubtedly be instrumental
in reigniting his career.
FORWARDS
York’s pack is full of power, with former
Featherstone stalwart Tim Spears leading
the line. Combined with former Halifax prop
Adam Robinson, he will inject some muchneeded
experience into what is otherwise a
very young pack. Former Wakefield Academy
forward Ronan Dixon and one-time BARLA
tourist Chris Siddons give plenty of punch
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
going forward, while there is an extra ounce
of experience from the Championship in
the shape of Hull KR trio George Milton,
Kieran Moran and Brad Clavering, all on dual
registration. The side were given an extra
boost in March, when James Ford managed
to pull off a massive coup in signing former
Harlequins and Wakefield hooker Andy Ellis,
who will be sure to add an extra element in
both attack and defence.
ONE TO WATCH
KEY MAN
York pulled off one of the signings of the
season, recruiting Castleford fullback Ash
Robson for their 2017 campaign. The 21-yearold
could arguably still compete at Super
League level, and would most likely be
understudy to Zak Hardaker, had injury not
plagued his professional career so far. After a
strong preseason last year, Robson was touted
to challenge Luke Dorn for the Tigers’ number
one
jersey, but his season was ended after rupturing
a kneecap in a friendly against Bradford. The
former Leeds Rhinos Academy star is back
this season, though, and looking for a strong
season with the Knights. His ability to slot in at
halfback means he has a sensational handling
game, and regularly injects himself into their
attack. A strong runner and an aggressive
defender, Robson is a huge threat for James
Ford’s side.
York certainly aren’t lacking in Super League
experience, and three-quarter Nick Rawsthorne
is just beginning his journey in the top flight.
The former Rugby Union convert is on loan at
York from Hull FC, where he signed a one-year
contract after previously being on the books
at Halifax RLFC, Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire
Carnegie. Still only 21, Rawsthorne is tipped
for big things in the future, and has already
established himself at the Knights, scoring two
tries in as many games. His size and athleticism
means he is at home playing at fullback as well
as in the centres and on the wing, while he has
plenty of pace and a good offload. Also keep
an eye out for young forward Brad Clavering
who is on dual registration with Hull KR.
Clavering has plenty of size, especially for an
18-year-old, and is a strong ball runner as well
as having great handling skills.
SUNDAY 30 TH APRIL
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
The All Golds handed the Crusaders their
ticket into the final with a “really poor” first
half performance according to coach Lee
Greenwood. “You can’t expect to beat a side
like the Crusaders if you do what we did in the
first 40.”
Greenwood was left fuming as his side
produced an error-ridden, disjointed first
half performance almost literally handing the
Crusaders five tries and a 30-10 lead at the
break.
After a Brad Kislingbury converted by Kieran
Hyde try gave the All Golds the lead, Jack
Mitchell dropped the restart and former
All Gold Alex Davidson went over from the
resulting possession.
Danny Price then struck for his first try
hacking the ball almost the length of the field
before scoring. A needless penalty gave the
Crusaders field position and Luke Warburton
scored.
Price then picked off a Phil Cowburn pass to
run the length of the field again to score before
Cowburn found the mark this time to send Mo
Agoro over for his 13th try of the season.
Tries either side of the break snuffed out
any realistic hope as Graham O’Keeffe first
misjudged the restart from Agoro’s score
before Simon Atherton went over and then
lost possession at the play the ball after
the break and Tommy Johnson ended up
cantering between the posts.
“As bad as we’ve played we’ve lost by 9 points.
It’s very disappointing though, we wanted to
make the final.”
Harrison Elliott summed up the mood of the
players when he tweeted: “That performance
will hurt for a while. Lost opportunity but have
to move on and focus on the league.”
Unrealistic hope was raised as Steve Parry
burrowed over and then Hyde connected with
Chris Barlow twice with pinpoint kickes for the
winger to acrobatically cross.
line was much too late to matter.
Greenwood added: “I’m very disappointed.
Probably the worst 80 minutes we’ve put
together all season. Credit to the Crusaders,
though.
INAUGURAL SOUTH
WALES PREMIER LEAGUE
TO DEBUT IN 2017
WRITTEN BY IAN GOLDEN
16
Wales Rugby League has rebranded its
flagship domestic competition in South
Wales to the “South Wales Premier League”.
This brings the competition name in line
with similar competitions in football and
rugby union in Wales.
The 2017 South Wales Premier League
sees the return to Wales of three successful
community clubs who have previously
played in English competitions – Valley
Cougars from Treharris, West Wales Raiders
from Llanelli and Torfaen Tigers from
Cwmbran.
They will join the new League alongside
established domestic clubs Bridgend Blue
Bulls, who play out of Pyle RFC, and a
relocated renamed Cardiff Blue Dragons
who will now play out of the historic
Glamorgan Wanderers’ Memorial Ground.
Rhondda Outlaws will field an open-age
side for the first time after a few years of
youth development, and will play out of
Sardis Road in Pontypridd, a former home
of Valley Cougars who they host in their first
home game on May 20th.
The Cougars are unable to use their pitch
for the first few weeks so their initial three
rounds are away from home.
There will also be domestic six-team
competitions run at under 13, 15 and 17 level
with four of the Premier League sides –
Cardiff, Torfaen, Bridgend and West Wales
– fielding sides at every age group, setting
up the possibilty of quadruple headers or
weekend long festivals of Rugby League as
some of the fixtures have been arranged to
accommodate this.
The Grand Finals are all scheduled to take
place on Sunday 13th August at a venue to
be announced.
WRL’s National Development Manager,
Idris Evans, said: “We’re delighted with this
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
ebranding and this has
been strongly supported by
all of our member clubs.
“We have called our
competitions ‘Conference’
for many years as we were
originally affiliated with the
English Conference system.
As we are now independent,
we felt that we had to go in
line with Welsh association
football and rugby union
who have called their
domestic competitions
that sit under their major
professional sides (ours of
course being South Wales
Ironmen and North Wales
Crusaders) “Premier” for
some time. You’ll also find
that the attendances we
have in the summer are
comparable with many
domestic Welsh clubs in the
other two codes.
“It’s fantastic that Valley
Cougars, West Wales
Raiders and Torfaen Tigers
have returned to Wales,
giving strength and support
to our domestic competition.
The Cougars reached the
last three finals of the now
defunct RFL Conference
South competition, West
Wales got to the semifinals
last year and Torfaen
were close to the top four
up until the final month of
the season. They’ll prove to
be big competition for last
season’s Welsh Conference
champions Bridgend Blue
Bulls, as well as Cardiff Blue
Dragons and Rhondda
Outlaws.
“I’m also delighted that
the League are playing
matches out of some
fantastic and historic stadia.
West Wales Raiders are
of course established in
Stebonheath Park in Llanelli
and with Cardiff moving to
the Glamorgan Wanderers’
Memorial Ground and
Rhondda into Pontypridd’s
Sardis Road, it shows how
well our clubs are building
partnerships in their local
area.
“I think that for the first time
ever, fans will be able to say
that any one of the six sides
is capable of winning the
league.
“We do also hope to run a
merit league underneath
the Premier, where other
aspiring clubs, led by names
like Blaenau Gwent Sharks,
Newport Titans and Neath
Port Talbot Steelers, can
play competitive friendly
matches.
“In addition, the fact that
most of our clubs will also
field junior sides just shows
how well we’re progressing
at all levels. There were times
when we would see one
named team at one level and
one at another, but we’re
now building clubs rather
than teams and long may
that continue.”
A new website and
branding for the League
will be launched soon.
The complete fixture list is
available to download here
and will soon be available
on the new Wales Rugby
League calendar at www.
tinyurl.com/wrlcalendar.
