the Beacon
Join us in Worship Celebration this week!
Thank you to the many who have shared with us the names of their loved ones who will be
remembered on Sunday as we celebrate All Saints Day at Shalimar UMC. Many churches celebrate All
Saints Day with the remembrance of saints. The New Testament defines the meaning of saints as "all
Christian people of every time and place." It is a day to celebrate the communion of saints as we
remember those who have died, both in our local congregations and throughout the Church universal
this past year. As is tradition, we will ring a bell as we remember those who have been a part of the
life of Shalimar UMC, and we will remember those extended family members who may not have been
directly, but through family or friends, a part of the life of the Shalimar UMC Family.
Below is the list of those who were a part of the fellowship here at SUMC. Though we work hard not to
overlook anyone , if you know of any others, please contact Pastor David (651-0721 ext. 125).
The Forum
This Sunday, The Forum Class will explore the Fourth Purpose of our lives: Shaped for serving God,
our Ministry of service to others.
We are simply God’s servants. We were put on earth to make a contribution and it is up to us to
accept our assignment. Some of us sow the Word by teaching, some show His love through local
outreach and mission work. We are not meant to be vessels into which the Word is poured
throughout our lives, but to minister to others now with the current skills and knowledge we have.
Part of our spiritual journey is to discover our SHAPE. We are directed to use our spiritual gifts,
with Heart, our unique Abilities, and Personality to share your personal experiences to show God’s
grace in our weaknesses. God deserves our best through our service to others.
What an incredible Fall Festival! The Fun-n-Fellowship Team wants to thank everyone who made this
church family/outreach event the best ever! We had 30 types of chili, dozens of apple pies, great
carved pumpkins, and lots of yummy cakes for the cake walk. This would not have been possible
without the wonderful volunteers who worked to make sure God’s love was shown to everyone who
came! There were at least 50 -100 people that are not regular attenders, so it was a great service of
God’s love to the community. Thanks to all of you who were “The Church” on Sunday night.
Sincerely,
The Fun-n-Fellowship Team
Small Group Ministries
Coming This Spring! While we already have many groups of different kinds in the
church, we plan to launch a network of small group opportunities especially for
those at SUMC who have not yet found a place to plug into a small group
setting. Many larger churches have found that groups of 6-12 people help bring the
larger church body down to size where people can truly share life together and
build authentic relationships in community. These groups will commit to meet
weekly to grow in their relationship with God and one another. As our church
continues to maximize use of the church campus, many of these groups will be
based in a home or a comfortable location outside the church.
We would like your feedback in an initial 2 question survey. We would like to
know 1) when YOU would be available and want to meet and 2) what type of
group you would prefer to be a part of. Please find this small survey on our church
web site at www.shalimar-umc.org/survey.php. Copies of the survey will also be
in the Family Life Center Lobby. Finally, please keep this new ministry venture in
your prayers as we seek to build community, connect with our brothers and
sisters, and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ in our daily and weekly living.
Vote, Vote, Vote!
This is a reminder to all our Christian Friends to be sure and vote. I believe that
we have a responsibility as a citizen and as a person of faith to take part in
shaping the future of our nation. Pastor and author Tony Evans opens his book
“How Should Christians Vote” by saying, “Many, if not most Christians begin with
the wrong question of - who they should vote for, rather than the more important
question of - how they should vote.”
I would not tell you who to vote for, but I would suggest how you should vote.
Christians should make it their responsibility to know the issues. How we should
vote is to know which candidates will best represent our convictions. Let this be a
matter of prayer. Pray for our leaders and pray for our country. It is God’s desire
to bless our land. Remember God’s promise from 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people
who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face,
and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive
their sins and heal their land”.
May God continue to bless our wonderful country. There is no place like America
with the freedoms we celebrate. Many have sacrificed so much to give us these
freedoms. You can do your part and your voice can be heard when you exercise
your right to vote. So, I will remind you once again, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE.
Blessings, Larry
