CITY
CENTRE
map inside!

Singapore’s tourist appeal
is as varied as its visitors
are diverse. There is the
country’s rich ethnic mix, its
colourful colonial history, its
incredible post-independence
transformation, its stunning
architecture, its vibrant arts
scene, its amazing shopping and
its cuisine, which is so rich and
diversified you could spend a
lifetime exploring it on its own.
The city offers an array of
fascinating juxtapositions. Chic
nightclubs and fancy restaurants
sit side-by-side with some of the
oldest temples in the country.
Boutique stores and funky cafés
share the street with sacred
mosques. In the morning you
could be on a hair-raising ride
in a theme park, and in the
afternoon chilling out on one of
the country’s beautiful beaches.
In the early evening you could
be having local food at one of
the city’s best hawker centres,
and then finish the evening at a
world-class nightclub or bespoke
cocktail bar. Singapore’s compact
size and amazing diversity make
it possible to enjoy it all no matter
what your budget or the time you
have at your disposal.
And there’s no better way
to explore Singapore’s many
and varied personalities than on
foot with a self-guided walking
tour such as the ones listed in
this guide. Follow our walk of
Chinatown to experience the
unexpected, and for some hip and
trendy flavour, try our Kampong
Glam trail. Our Little India walk
is truly quirky, and will take you
through shops festooned with
jasmine flower garlands, and
shops specialising in spices and
Bollywood music. The Orchard
Road trail may surprise you;
it’s not all shopping you know!
Enjoy a romantic stroll down the
Singapore River, have some fun
on the Sentosa leg of the journey,
and indulge in the high life at
Marina Bay.
So, whether you’re a first
time visitor or a frequent returnee
to this wonderful city, we hope
you’ll indulge in one or more
of these walks to discover a
Singapore of many sides and
colours, tastes and possibilities,
and make the most of your time
here. Enjoy your stay.
Orchard Road
Indulge in
Style and Glamour
ION Orchard
If there’s a place in town to
glamourise your wardrobe,
then surely it’s Orchard Road.
It was officially voted as the top
shopping destination in the world
by 25-year-old French marketing
consultancy Presence Mystery
Shopping in a 2012 survey.
In recent years, the
strip has become even
more of a magnet
for international
names with the
entry of stylish
new malls such
as ION Orchard,
313@somerset and
Knightsbridge, plus
the entry of famous
brands like H&M and
Abercrombie & Fitch, adding to
the glamour quotient.
And there’s more to look
forward to. Late 2012 will see the
$150 million integration of Plaza
8 Your Quarterly Guide
Singapura and Atrium@Orchard,
that will make it one of the largest
complexes on the strip.
Orchard stalwart Wisma Atria
will be shelling out $31 million to
redo its facade and introduce new
tenants that include American
fashion brand Tory Burch in their
Singapore debut and Swiss
watchmaker Swatch
with their first ever
concept store in
Southeast Asia.
But Orchard
Road offers
more besides
retail therapy. In
this section, you’ll
discover that the
strip is brimming with
other lifestyle possibilities
that will enable you to live the
glamorous life… and it’s all within
walking distance.
Abercrombie & Fitch
STarT
After exiting Somerset MRT, start
at 1 313@somerset, one of the
newer faces along Orchard Road
and among the most stylish. 313@
somerset has an eclectic mix of
shops ranging from science fiction
and fantasy store Harris Planerds
and Swiss eatery Marché to Spanish
fashion giant Zara.
As you arrive at the junction
of Grange Road and Orchard
Road, H&M catches your eye.
The Swedish retail giant has
taken up the entire 2 Orchard
Building with its first ever store
in Southeast Asia. Shoppers
can look forward to three floors
of clothing, including featured
collaborations with high fashion
brands like Versace and Comme
des Garçons.
If you feel like resting your
feet, Lucky 13, a slick new
Mandarin gallery
Miami-styled diner at
3 TripleOne Somerset, is close
by and has great, authentic
American-Cuban food on offer.
Down the road is
4 Mandarin gallery with four
floors of retail and featuring some
of the most sophisticated shops
along Orchard Road. The MAd
Museum of Art & design is of
note here as it has a wide range
of art by established and up-andcoming
Chinese artists as well as
cool collectibles like T-shirts and
postcards for sale.
Also of interest is
Abercrombie & Fitch’s first ever
flagship store in Southeast Asia
located across the road. Offering
classic, casual, all-American
apparel, they are situated at
Knightsbridge, a high-end luxury
mall within the 5 grand Park
Orchard Hotel.
As you walk west, you’ll
find 6 ION Orchard whose eyecatching
wave design makes it
one of the most stylish malls
on the block. With over 60,000
Rendezvous by
the River
Singapore River
The lifeblood of Singapore
is the river. In the early
days when the city was a
British outpost, Singapore River
was the colony’s main trade artery
and its centre of its commercial
activity. Today, the banks of the
river are still abuzz, though the
bustle of entrepôt trade has
been replaced with an array of
cultural spots, restaurants and
after-dark hangouts. It’s also a
place of romance. Riverside cafés
and restaurants develop a charm
of their own and old bridges
become a perfect, picturesque
spot for couples. Best explored
in the afternoon and into the
night, Singapore River has it all—
idyllic views, fascinating history,
incredible art, and amazing food
and drink. Take a quiet stroll
along this lovely waterway and
you’ll see why Singapore River
offers a sense of romance and
the heartbeat of the city.
START
After exiting Raffles Place
MRT, head over Singapore’s
oldest bridge, the 142-year-old
Cavanagh Bridge, to the 1 Asian
Civilisations Museum, the first in
Southeast Asia to bring together
an integrated perspective of pan-
Asian cultures and civilisations.
Wandering through the exhibits
here can make for a great midafternoon
date. Whether it’s a
majestic yellow robe once worn
by the emperor of China or
terracotta figures from some of
these early civilisations,
you’re sure to find
something beautiful to admire.
Outside the museum is
Raffles’ Landing Site, the location
where Singapore’s founding
father, Sir Stamford Raffles,
first set foot here in 1819. Head
across the bridge to 2 UOB
Plaza and you’ll be greeted by
two sculptures: the 3.8 metre
tall Salvador dali’s Homage to
Newton and the playful Bird by
Fernando Botero. World class
art, right in the heart of the city.
Also along the river banks
in-between Maybank Tower
and 3 Fullerton Hotel, you’ll
see the “People of the River”
sculptures, which depict what
river life was like during the
early days of Singapore.
Continuing your afternoon
walk west will take you to
4 Boat Quay, a collection of
lovely conservation shophouses,
which are transformed into a
bustling scene at night filled

where you can really feel the
One of the newest bars on
the strip is Absinthe Artisan,
is great for pre-dinner drinks.
Calling itself Singapore’s very
first absinthe boutique bar, it
serves the spirit in a variety of
concoctions including an absinthe
martini garnished with bak kwa
(sweet/savoury barbecued pork),
which works surprisingly well.
And the venue’s décor evokes
the romantic charm of Paris.
Dinner around the area can
be had across the road from 5
Clarke Quay MRT at Le Chasseur,
which serves up hearty local
food to satisfy even the most
hardcore foodie. Always packing
in a healthy crowd, its signature
dishes are claypot chicken rice,
ter kar chou (pig trotter in black
vinegar) and barbequed prawns.
In the evening, Helipad at 5
The Central opens for business.
The main room downstairs has DJs
spinning electro and upbeat lounge
music, but it’s the 278 square
metre rooftop bar on the fifth
floor that’s the main attraction.
It overlooks the Singapore River
and, at night, the whole of
Clarke Quay lights up for some
spectacularly romantic views.
Another alternative for dinner
is further down at 6 Riverside
Point mall’s Jumbo Seafood
Restaurant which is fantastic for
local seafood by the river. This
buzzing restaurant serves one of
the best renditions of Singapore’s
famous chilli crab dish, as well as
the restaurant’s other favourites,
crispy baby squid and sambal
(chilli-based sauce) kangkong.
Across the river is where
you’ll find 7 Clarke Quay,
one of Singapore’s premier
entertainment hubs with over
50 bars and restaurants. One is
The Chupitos Bar with over 130
shooters on offer including some
local concoctions such as teh tarik
(pulled tea) and bandung (rose
syrup). If beer is your thing, try
Beer Market. Feel the pulse of the
market as the prices of their 23
different types of beers rise and
fall every half hour in accordance
with consumer demand.
As far as nightclub action
goes, Attica offers a lively party
atmosphere with overseas guest
DJs spinning the decks. And if
you’re looking for an amazing
audio-visual treat, megaclub
Zirca has live performances by
aerialists, contortionists and
fire-twirlers who do their acts
in time to the club music.
Chinatown
Discover
The Unexpected
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum
Chinatown is a mix of
old and new, a place
where disparate cultures
converge. Beyond Chinese
landmarks, the neighbourhood
delights with beautiful
heritage buildings dedicated to
Indian, Malay and even Arab
communities. The ever-evolving
centre is also in the heart of
the financial district and office
workers from surrounding
buildings flock here in the evening.
Chic nightclubs and cuttingedge
restaurants exist within
traditional shop houses—just one
of many unexpected surprises.
Whether you indulge in the latest
innovations by envelope-pushing
chefs and mixologists, or satisfy
your curiosity about local culture,
you’ll be spoilt for choice here. And
with it all located in such close
proximity, you’ll have the luxury
of doing it all in a single day.
An astounding sight, the Hindu-
this place is a local institution.
Meals are served buffet-style
so load up on rich spicy curries,
If you’re up for a detour
1842, this Hokkien temple is
among the oldest and most
important in Singapore. A curious
feat of architecture, it was also
built entirely without nails.
Returning to the main
Chinatown area, venture down
Smith Street for some surprising
shopping options such as
Off this stretch, find old school
7 street markets on Trengganu
Emerging from Sago Street
onto South Bridge Road, visit the
8 Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
& Museum. Though it looks
hundreds of years old, the building
was actually completed in 2007.
The building is famous for housing
a Buddha tooth relic, a sacred
treasure found in 1980 under a
collapsed stupa in Myanmar.
At Kreta Ayer Square
just behind the temple is
Indian culture doesn’t just
present itself to you here; it
assaults your five senses
in such a way that it
makes you feel alive:
the smell of turmeric,
START
Once you’re out of Farrer Park
MRT on Race Course Road, you’ll
see the iconic 1 Sri Srinivasa
Perumal Temple. Originally built
in 1885, it’s the starting point of
the famous Thaipusam festival,
a sacred religious festival where
devotees pierce their skins with
the skewers of heavy ornate
structures called kavadis.
Further up the road is the
2 Sakya Muni Buddha gaya
Temple also known as the temple
of 1,000 lights. (Little-known fact:
It actually has only 989 lights).
These lights surround a 15-metre
high statue of the reclining Buddha
weighing 300 tonnes. Another
interesting fact is that because
there are statues of Ganesha and
the four-faced Buddha—similar
to the Hindu god, Brahma—the
temple is visited by both Hindu
and Buddhist worshippers.
Head down Serangoon Road
towards the city and you’ll see a
Singapore shopping institution,
the 24-hour 3 Mustafa Centre
on the left. Besides stocking
an estimated 150,000 items,
it also offers unusual services
Sultan Mosque
It’s a strange paradox that
one of the oldest precincts
in Singapore—an important
gathering area for the original
settlers in Singapore, the Malay
and Muslim communities—
has over the years embraced
modern shops that are
bohemian and alternative.
This curious mix of trendy and
traditional means that you could
be eating nasi padang (Malay
dishes with rice) in a century-old
conservation shophouse on one
visit, but on your next, shopping
for new wave boutique clothing or
chilling out at a brand-new bar.
That’s what creates the buzz in
this place and it’s why people keep
coming back to the area, whether
they’re hipsters or history buffs.
START
From Bugis MRT station, walk
down Victoria Street and make
a right at Arab Street. At the
junction of Arab Street and
North Bridge Road, you’ll see the
impressive 1 Sultan Mosque.
Built in 1826 by the Sultan of
Johor, Hussein Shah, it is the
largest mosque in Singapore
and a national heritage site.
Turning left into Muscat
Street will bring you to the
entrance of the mosque and,
if you’d like to explore within,
check out the mosque’s dome
base, formed out of many glass
bottles collected by devotees;
an impressive sight to behold.
Outside the entrance
is Bussorah Street, a short
pedestrian alley with two-storey
shophouses filled with chic
Middle-Eastern cafés, souvenirs
and traditional clothing stores
selling batik materials, as well
as boutique spas and funky
stores selling vintage curios.
2 Jamal Kazura Aromatics
is not to be missed here. A
family business for more than
80 years, this intimate fragrance
boutique offers a wide range
of Arabic perfumes, massage
