Fish worth Tk5cr washed
away in Habiganj flash flood

Fishes worth around Tk-
5crore have floated away in a
flash flood triggered by heavy
rain and onrush of hilly waters
from across the border in
Habiganj, leaving farm owners
in the lurch.
Zubeda-Gani Agro Fishery
in Bajukar Haor of the
district’s Baniachong upazila
was the worst affected among
the farms.
Its owner Zahangir Hossain,
who had been in South Korea
for years, said he had invested
Tk3 crore in fish farming in the
100-acre fishery and claimed
to have lost fishes worth about
Tk1 crore in the flood.
The affected farmers
sought assistance from the
government and demanded
that it take measures to provide
them with interest-free
loans so they can revive.
Fisheries Officer in Habiganj
said: “The fishes floated away
as ponds and haors overflew
their banks due to the rain.
“The district fisheries office
will take necessary steps after
an investigation. And, we are
sending a report to the higher
authorities in Dhaka.” •
BCL leader goes missing

unit has reportedly been missing
for the last three weeks.
Jony Jomaddar, religious
affairs secretary of district
unit BCL, went missing any
time after 11am on April 9. He
was on the way to his mother’s
residence in KCC Balur
Math area under Ward No.
10 of the district town from
his own residence in Coastal
Borofkol area under the same
ward, according to relatives.
Jony’s wife Laboni Akhter
filed a general diary (GD) with
Kotwali police station in this
connection on April 30.
He used to run a fast food
and coffee shop in Coastal
Borofkal area.
Sub-Inspector Somiron
Mondol, who is the investigation
officer (IO) of the GD, said
they had launched an investigation
into the matter. •

Indigenous student leader
picked up by army
men lands in jail

The Panchhari upazila unit President
Jewel Chakma of Pahari Chhatra
Parishad (PCP) was sent to jail
on Monday.
The development took place as
Khagrachhari’s Assistant Judicial
Magistrate Rokeya Begum denied
his bail plea in the afternoon after
the army and the police jointly filed
a case against him earlier in the
day, said court sources.
Panchhari police station Officerin-Charge
Abdul Jabbar on Sunday
confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that
some army personnel picked up Jewel
the night before and later conducted
drives in different areas with him.
Sources at the police station said
that Jewel had been handed over to
them around 6:15pm on Sunday.
Before the latest case, Jewel had
been sued twice with the police
station over extortion charges, in
which he is already on bail.
Jewel was detained from the
house of one of his relatives in
Panchhari upazila in possession of
some receipt books to raise fund for
the organisation and some letters
drafted to send to some individuals,
said PCP’s Khagrachhari district unit
Office Secretary Samar Chakma.
The detention came amid continuing
protests over the death of
Romel Chakma, PCP’s Naniarchar
unit general secretary in Rangamati,
on April 19.
Romel, an HSC examinee, was
also picked up by the army personnel
of Naniarchar camp on April 5
reportedly for interrogation in two
arson cases on suspicion.
He was handed over to the police
the next morning and later admitted
to Chittagong Medical College
Hospital. •
