Power supply resumes after 5 hours in 4 divisions
• Aminur Rahman Rasel
Power supply in Barisal, Khulna,
Rajshahi and Rangpur was restored
yesterday after five hours suspension
due to a grid failure on Monday
night.
The power supply disruption
occurred as the national grids of
Ghorashal-Ishwardi and Ashuganj-Sirajganj
electricity transmission
lines were damaged.
Power Grid Company of Bangladesh
(PGCB) formed a four-member
probe committee led by its
Chief Engineer Kamrul Hassan to
look into the matter. The committee
was asked to submit the report
within five days.
Seeking anonymity, an official
of PGCB told the Dhaka Tribune
that the Ashuganj-Sirajganj transmission
line tower was damaged in
Meghna River in Bhairab on Monday
night which caused overload in
Ghorashal-Ishwardi line.
The Ghorashal-Ishwardi line
tripped at 11:20am yesterday as
it was overloaded and 22 power
plants of around 2000MW shut
down automatically, said the official.
He also said that a total of 212MV
electricity was being transmitted
through Ghorashal-Ishwardi
line though its capacity is 170MV
because of the damage in Ashuganj-Sirajganj
line.
The western region of Bangladesh
gets power supply from these
two 230kV each transmission lines.
The power was interrupted in country’s
western, northern and southern regions
as the Ghorashal-Ishwardi and Ashuganj-
Sirajganj transmission lines were damaged
Later, the power supply was resumed
when the transmission line
was restored.
A PGCB source said the Ashuganj-Sirajganj
230kV line is still
closed and it may cause load-shedding
in different areas.
Masum-Al-Beruni, managing
director of PGCB, said: “The power
was interrupted in country’s western,
northern and southern regions
as the transmission lines were
damaged but the power supply is
normal in most of the areas now.”
Zakiul Islam, managing director
of North West Zone Power Distribution
Company Limited, said: “Power
supply of Rajshahi and Rangpur
divisions became normal from
2pm, Tuesday.”
Md Shafique Uddin, managing
director of West Zone Power
Distribution Company Limited,
said: “Power was interrupted in 21
districts of south-western region.
Tension grew up among people as
it happened without notice. But
the power supply became normal
after a few hours.” •
