The Manchester Bird Sanctuary is a<br />
municipaly-owned,protected plotofnaturalland<br />
thatishometoatleast48diferentspeciesofbirds<br />
andotherwildlife.TheSanctuarywasregisteredin<br />
1951anddonatedtotheCityofSaintJohnbyA.Carle<br />
Smith “for the purposes of preserving and<br />
maintainingthewildlifesanctuary”in1975.Mr.Smith<br />
lilivednextthesanctuaryandbecameaself-taught<br />
authorityon nature,geography,politicsand local<br />
history.Heandhismother,Mrs.H.LSmith,wereactive<br />
conservationistsconcernedaboutvanishingspecies<br />
duetourbanexpansioninSaintJohn.<br />
ACAPcompletedafieldstudyofthesanctuaryin<br />
2003 which containsinformation on bird species,<br />
habitat types, and long-term management<br />
recommendations.IntheFalof2016,ACAP Saint<br />
John re-evaluated thisfield study and both the<br />
originaland revised reportscan befound on our<br />
Manchester Bird Sanctuary webpage,<br />

This yearACAP SaintJohn plans to meetthe<br />
neighbours,design and instalsigns atselected<br />
vantagepointsalongtheperimeterofthesanctuary,<br />
aswelasclean-uphumandebrisalongtheedgesof<br />

Many forest birds,like the ones found within<br />
Manchester Bird Sanctuary,have specific forest<br />
habitatrequirements:<br />
-Particularstandstructureandmaturity;some<br />
birdspreferolderforestthataredominatedbyone<br />
treespecies,whileothersprefermixedforesttypes;<br />
-Presenceofsnags;<br />
-Groundcover(bothwoodydebrisandplant<br />
species);and,<br />
-Canopylayers.<br />
Fortunately,in the sanctuary there are spatialy<br />
diferent forest habitat types,within the larger<br />
encompassingforestthatdominatesthesite,ofering<br />
multipleforesthabitattypesforthebirdswithinthe<br />
area.<br />
WithintheManchesterBirdSanctuarywecanfindthe<br />
folowinghabitats:<br />
-Redsprucestands;<br />
-Mixedwoodstands;<br />
-Balsam firstands;<br />
-Openfieldattheendoftheforestrunningfrom<br />
PorterStreettoManchesterAvenue;and,<br />
-Edgeareasaroundthesanctuary’sperimeter<br />
containingfruittrees.<br />

JIM WILSON<br />
Jim hasalwayshadastronginterestinnature,and<br />
birdsinparticular.Thiscomesfrom hisDad,who<br />
painted,sketchedandcarvedbirdsandanimalsas<br />
ahobby.Whenhewasjustalitleboygrowingup<br />
alongtheKennebecasisRiverhisfathertookhim<br />
forwalksinthewoodsonhisshouldersbecause<br />
Jim wastoosmaltowalkthatfar.<br />
AretiredProfessionalAccountant(CPA,CMA),he<br />
now hasmoretimetospendinthefieldobserving<br />
andtakingphotographs,whichhelovestoshare<br />
with interested audiences. Jim has had the<br />
privilegeofservinginanumberofrelatedrolesas<br />
avolunteer,includingPresidentoftheSaintJohn<br />
Naturalists’ClubandChairoftheNew Brunswick<br />
WildlifeTrustFund.Hepreparesweeklycomments<br />
on birds for the Sightings page of the<br />
Telegraph-Journal newspaper, and contributes<br />
from time to time to CBC Radio,discussing<br />
nature-relatedtopics.
