B–2 SETS<br />

DEFINITION.<br />

A set is a collection (or class) of objects.<br />

The largest set or the all-embracing set of objects under consideration in an experiment<br />

is called the universal set. All other sets under consideration in the experiment are subsets, or<br />

events, of the universal set. This is illustrated in Fig. B–1a, where a Venn diagram is given.<br />
