century Yupian gives as the orthodox form<br />

(main form) of this graph, and notes as a<br />

popular form. Later prevailed and is listed<br />

as the main form in Kangxi zidian. It has ,<br />

burner covers and obscures things’, though the<br />

latter seems speculative. Seal form is taken as <br />

‘fire’, with 垔 as phonetic with associated sense<br />

‘obstruct’, construed as ‘fire burns but air flow is<br />

blocked and fire smoulders’. Tōdō takes associated<br />

sense instead as ‘obscure, conceal’. In all of<br />

the above, ‘smoke’ represents a derived sense.<br />

take 垔 as 169 ‘west’ and 64 ‘ground’.<br />

as ‘black tinged with blue’. Katō sees it as ‘white’,<br />

maintaining that in ancient times lead and tin<br />

(the latter a whitish alloy) were not well distinguished,<br />

thus the association between lead and<br />

white. However, Shuowen itself defines ‘lead’<br />

and ‘tin’ contrastively, explaining ‘lead’ as ‘a<br />

blue metal’, and NJK ‘tin’ as ‘a metal between<br />
