analysis on the basis that the early Chinese<br />

sound value of makes it unlikely as a phonetic<br />

in , and so interprets it as with , to give<br />

‘look down (from a platform or similar) on merchandise’<br />

(then presumably generalized to ‘look<br />

down’, etc.). Given Schuessler’s reconstructed<br />

sound values for early Chinese, this interpretation<br />

has some merit, and is favored by Ogawa<br />
