years: The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, and Cream.<br />

Clapton continued his success in many different formats, including a friendship<br />

with George Harrison and the Beatles (that’s Clapton on lead guitar in<br />

Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”), the band Derek and the<br />

Dominos (with Duane Allman), and an identity as a solo artist. Through controversy<br />

and comeback, in acoustic and electric settings, and as a guitarist<br />

and singer/songwriter, Clapton always eventually lands on top, and continues<br />

Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954–90)<br />

Stevie Ray Vaughan could play it all. He had firm roots in his heavy influence<br />

from Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Lonnie Mack, but he delivered with the virtuosity<br />

and abandon of Jimi Hendrix (who was also a big influence) and the<br />

soul of Eric Clapton (covered in the previous section). Vaughan developed a<br />

unique playing style — an integration of lead and rhythm that was similar to<br />

the way Hendrix often played. Chapter 13 has more info on Vaughan.
