A table-top format may be more user friendly for tone-tweaking purposes. It
allows you to change the controls by hand and offers more knobs and
switches than a floorboard unit does. Figure 15-20 shows a table-top format
effect called the Line 6 Pod XT. It has many front-panel knobs and switches,
which are more suited to tweaking by hand than your foot.
Many table-top units, including the Line 6 Pod XT, offer a floorboard add-on,
so you can use this unit during performance and not just while you’re in a
rehearsal studio or your home studio recording your own music.
Rack-mount multi-effects unit
If you want the greatest power and flexibility with your effects choices and
parameters within those effects, consider a rack-mount multi-effects unit.
This format is the format of choice for manufacturers making the highestquality
components. You control these effects with an attached floorboard
(which houses the switching mechanism), but the brains (the actual soundeffecting
circuitry) are housed in a separate component in a rack unit at the
back of the stage (or even offstage, run by a technician).
