294 Part V: Gearing Up: Outfitting Your Arsenal TEAM LinG
Figure 15-17:
An outboard
effect offers
more variety
and control.
A guitarist can achieve vibrato four ways:
1. Through left-hand bending and releasing of a fretted string
2. By jiggling the whammy bar if the guitar has a floating bridge
3. From the amp’s effects section, if the amp has a vibrato control
4. From an outboard effect
Pretending (and Sounding Like)
You’re Somewhere You’re Not
Ambient effects electronically simulate the sound of your guitar in a physical
space, such as a room or concert hall, cathedral or canyon. Even a little bit of
ambience gives your sound a sense of depth and keeps it from sounding too
dry. Technically, all ambient sound is classified as reverberation, or reverb,
for short, but guitarists can use two effects, delay and reverb, to simulate
ambience.
