Chapter 15: Choosing Your Amp and Effects
Chronicling Classic Amps for Blues
Blues players love and respect their history — not only for the players and
the recordings but also for the gear. And that doesn’t just include vintage guitars.
To whet your appetite for the blues amp, I show you in the next sections
seven great blues amps and how they got to be classics. The amps that I’ve
included are by no means an exhaustive representation, but I think most
blues players agree that these are worthy members of the amp hall of fame.
Fender Bassman
The Fender Bassman amp was designed originally for a bass guitar. It had
four 10-inch speakers (guitar amps more commonly use 12-inch), but the
bottom end (bass end) thundered because it was designed for a bass, and the
top end (the treble) sparkled. This thumping bass and sparkling treble is the
classic Fender sound.
Many musicians have used this amp over the years. Stevie Ray Vaughan is
one of the most famous in the blues genre. Check out the Fender Bassman
amp in Figure 15-12.
