amp head is really a half stack. So if you really want to use the term “Marshall<br />

stack” correctly, make sure you see three boxes on top of each other.<br />

The Fender Bandmaster, Fender Bassman, and Marshall stacks are famous<br />

examples of the head and cabinet configurations. Figure 15-3 shows a head<br />

and cabinet configuration.<br />

Rack mount amp<br />

A rack mount amp includes both an amp and a preamp (circuitry that boosts<br />

the relatively weak signal coming straight from the guitar and prepares it for<br />

the power amplifier section). Blues players rarely use this type of amp<br />

because it’s complex and logistically more involved because of the separate<br />

parts, which must be connected with extra cables. Mostly studio players and<br />

performers with high-end stage gear use the rack mount system to hold the<br />

electronic gear.<br />

Figure 15-4 shows a rack mount preamp and power amp as separate<br />

components.<br />
