funk style into a true psychedelic soup, blowing guitarists’ minds with legendary
tracks like “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “Little Wing,” and “Voodoo
Child (Slight Return).”
Hendrix’s innovative use of fuzz, wah, Octavia (which adds a note one
octave above the one being picked), and UniVibe (a swirling modulation
effect) expanded the guitar’s repertoire and took his bluesy guitar solos
to all-time highs.
Figure 13-3 shows his radical approach to both blues style and, more specifically,
blues tone by taking a standard blues-based passage and adding —
horror of horrors! — a wah-wah pedal. When Jimi played traditional, slow
blues, as he did in his extended jam “Red House,” he showed the world the
depth of his blues roots.
To emulate Jimi (as if anyone would dare!), play your instrument over your
head, behind your back, in a sexually suggestive position, and douse the
sound with wah, distortion, and flanger. (For information on these effects, see
Chapter 15. For the other stuff, check out Jimi’s live performances on video.)
Bend strings at unusual times and to unusual intervals and make it all work.
Good luck!
