Bo Diddley, king of the jungle beat
Guitarist Bo Diddley, meanwhile, picked up a rectangular Gretsch electric and
strummed a syncopated chord rhythm, later known as the Bo Diddley beat.
This jungle beat (along with a heavy, throbbing drum sound), also known as
the “Burundi beat,” became another ’50s guitar staple, turning up in hits like
“Hey Bo Diddley” and Diddley’s eponymous hit, “Bo Diddley.”
