My month
Mum and I at Ladies Day 2016
FROM THE
EDITOR
in pictures
How are we already in May? This year is going far too quickly and
I cannot believe we are already thinking about Ladies Day! I have
been going with my Mum every year since I was about 17 and the
highlight for me is most definitely the fashion. I love choosing a
dress and picking a whacky hat or fascinator and if the sun’s shining,
it’s a great day out. We really are lucky to live so close to the town
which is famed for being the ‘home of horseracing’.
This month, I have spoken to various local fashion retailers to hear
their top tips about dressing for a day at the races, so if you’re
struggling for inspiration, take a look at page 54 to hear from the
likes of Javelin, Giulio, Nicola Sexton, Newmarket Hat Hire, Racing
Hat Hire, Hobbs, John Lewis, Martha V and Cream of Royston.
Talking of racing, there’s an overview on the different ways of
enjoying a day at the racecourse (page 34) as well as some of the
best places to dine and stay in and around Newmarket if you’re not
local to the area (page 37).
Elsewhere in this issue, read about our visits to Tuddenham Mill,
Cambridge Cookery School’s café, Quy Mill and The Blackbirds Inn.
May also welcomes English Wine Week and National BBQ Week
which means it’s high time we all celebrated with a barbie and glass
of homegrown English wine! As if we really needed an excuse…
We look forward to seeing you all at the various race meetings
happening over the next few months.
Bourgee has taken over Bury St
Edmunds’ Cupola House
After months of anticipation, Bourgee has finally opened
its doors in Bury St Edmunds. We can tell it’s already
going to be a hit as Bourgee was in fact founded on
the belief that luxury dining can be served at affordable
prices. This is mirrored in their brunch, lunch and dinner
menu which is graced with lots of delicious options. With
restaurants already in Southend-on-Sea and Chelmsford,
they’re famed for the steak and lobster. They even serve
Sunday lunch, afternoon tea and have a menu entirely
focused on gluten-free as well as one for the little ones.
Look out for our review over the coming months.
“As a truly iconic British market town, filled with heritage
and culture, Bury St. Edmunds provided an immediate
draw for us to establish our third site. Although we
naturally want to put a Bourgee spin on the new venue, we
understand how important Cupola House is to the local
community, and want to ensure we remain true to the
historical architecture of the space,” Bourgee Director,
James Welling, told us ahead of the opening.
British Sandwich Week
14th - 20th May
This month welcomes a week-long celebration
of our favourite go-to snack - the sandwich!
It’s Britain’s most iconic culinary invention
and was coined by John Mantague, the 4th
Earl of Sandwich when he ordered cold beef
between two slices of toast to avoid getting up
from his cards game. Did you know us Brits go
through over 11.5 billion sandwiches each year
and if you laid each one end to end it would go
around the world 44 times!
As if we needed another reason to go
to Nando’s... they’re now
eco-friendly!
Chicken chain, Nando’s have opened
a brand new store in Cambridge’s
Leisure Park and it’s run completely on
renewable energy. Not only this, it’s
actually the first Nando’s in the world
to be run this way. The roof, with 97
solar panels, is designed to keep the
restaurant insulated as well as catching
rain water to keep the plants hydrated
on the outside. The interior is quirky
but still holds the international feel.
As for the menu, thankfully this hasn’t
changed. Oh and there’s even parking
meaning getting your chicken is even
less hassle...
Our
This month’s recipe courtesy of Waitrose
Baked Mascarpone & Lemon Drizzle Cheesecake
1. Preheat the oven to 160°C, gas mark 3. Line a 21cm loosebottomed
cake tin with baking parchment. Blitz the hazelnuts in
a food processor, then add the biscuits and pulse until you have
coarse crumbs. Tip into a bowl and mix with the melted butter.
Spoon into the base of the cake tin and press down well.
2. Place the mascarpone cheese and soft cheese in a large bowl
with 150g of the caster sugar, and mix together well. Stir in
the flour, vanilla, the finely grated zest from the lemon and the
lemon curd. Then beat in the eggs, one at a time, making sure
one is incorporated before adding the next.
3. Pour on top of the biscuit base. Tap gently to level out the
surface, then place in the oven and bake for 1 hour. Turn off the
oven, open the door and leave the cheesecake inside to cool.
When totally cooled place in the fridge and chill for at least 3
hours or for up to 24 hours.
4. Meanwhile, make
the lemon drizzle
syrup. Slice the
lemon thinly and
place in a small saucepan with
INGREDIENTS:
• 75g blanched hazelnuts, toasted
• 150g digestive biscuits
• 75g butter, melted
• 600g mascarpone cheese
• 250g full fat soft cheese
• 275g caster sugar
• 2 tbsp plain flour
• 1 tsp natural vanilla extract
• 1 lemon
• 100g lemon curd
• 3 medium Waitrose British
Blacktail Eggs
• 300ml whipping cream
the remaining caster sugar and 100ml of cold water. Bring to a
gentle simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened and syrupy.
Set aside to cool.
5. When ready to serve whip the cream with a hand-held
electric mixer until just thick with soft peaks. Spoon over the top
of the chilled cheesecake.
Decorate with the
lemon slices and drizzle
over the lemon syrup
Hear about Cambridge Cookery School’s
much-loved neighbourhood café
Founded by Tine Roche in 2008, Cambridge Cookery School
have been going from strength to strength since moving into
their new premises just off Hills Road in Cambridge around 18
months ago. The initial idea was to offer a range of unique and
inspiring cookery classes from experienced and friendly chefs
which they soon mastered with ease. Their cookery school has
won national acclaim for both its classes and exclusive culinary
trips. Their kitchen is expertly equipped and is the ideal spot
for interactive group activities. It’s a popular destination for all
ages and offers a range of child-friendly and adult classes right
through to hen parties and team building corporate events.
In 2016, Tine decided to expand with the launch of their chic,
on-site café, micro bakery and wine bar. “When we moved to
our new heritage site here between
“The space we
have here is
fantastic and
I knew a café
would work
perfectly.”
Homerton College and Hills Road
Sixth Form, I wanted to bring
something extra for our customers
and visitors. The space we have here
is fantastic and I knew a café would
work perfectly,” Tine explains as she
shows us around. Open from 8am
Monday right through until Saturday,
they serve a range of breakfast, lunch
and snack options to both eat in or
takeaway for those who are in a hurry. “In less than a year, we’ve
become a popular hotspot for many locals and we’re inundated
daily by local residents and business communities,” adds Tine.
“Some call in to pick up a coffee and one of our homemade
croissants first thing, whilst others will enjoy a coffee and sit down
breakfast or perhaps meet friends here for lunch.”
As we sat down sipping on a fresh coffee (coffee lovers – this is
a must-visit!), Tine began talking us through their menu. “Both
myself and co-owner Liz Young are really passionate about
locally-sourced produce and we try to support nearby suppliers
as much as we can. It means we are able to offer really fresh and
high quality food to our customers and this is really reflected
in the flavour,” she explains. Having been brought up in both
Copenhagen and Stockholm, Tine has brought her Scandinavian
culinary heritage to the menu whilst Liz, who grew up in Auckland
and has travelled the world brings a variety of other influences.
Between them both, the menu has been crafted to offer a range
of Middle Eastern, Italian and Scandinavian delights as well as
having a focus on vegetarian dishes. “Whilst a large proportion
of our dishes are plant-based and suitable for vegetarians, we
are able to add meat or fish for those who would like it. A lot
of our customers enjoy our vegan offering and it’s becoming
increasingly more popular to eat this way,” Tine explains as
she fetched a barley and roasted courgette salad with yoghurt
dressing and parma ham for me to try. The salads are all prepared
fresh each day by Tine’s dedicated team. They are all bursting
with colour as they lay in huge bowls on the counter. Also
catching my eye, were their delicious homemade hot cross
buns, breads and other seasonal sweet treats. The space has a
really chilled vibe which is certainly enhanced by the buzz of the
children’s cookery class happening next door and the friendly
smiles from the staff. The views outside are typically reflective
of Cambridge, with the bustle of students and aesthetic
architecture.
“Our menu is flexible and changes every day. It is usually
dependent on the produce available from our suppliers. We get
a lot of our produce from Croxton Park which is an organic,
family-run estate in St Neots. We also use Kale and Damson who
are another of our favourites here in Cambridge,” she adds. “Our
Italian cured meats come from Rutland Charcuterie Company
and we use them because they use high welfare animals. Italian
cuisine is one of my personal favourites and it is great to be able
to get such authentic flavour so close to home. I’ve never tasted
anything quite like it outside of Italy.”
Whilst their day time menus are proving so popular they’re now
going to be open Sundays too, it’s their Saturday night bistro
which really took my fancy. The last few months have seen
Saturday nights offering a range of vibrant sharing platters.
Graced with homemade breads and dishes, each is set apart
by their opposing cuisine and diners are able to choose from
Japanese, Middle Eastern, Spanish or Italian. There are also a
range of fine wines from local vineyards and speciality cocktails
to really make your evening. So if you’re looking for something a
little different to do one Saturday evening, gather a few friends or
take a loved one along.
Cheers to English Wine!
Word on the grapevine is that English Wine Week is just around the corner so we
caught up with Cambridge-based independent drinks specialist, Thirsty
Drink
English Wine Week is the ideal time to celebrate and enjoy one
of our growing industries. English wines have been going from
strength to strength with an unprecedented number of vineyards
being planted each year. Somewhere between global warming
and tough exchange rates, the real story is shining through.
English vineyards have something to offer... The terroir (wine
speak for the unique combination of soil and climate) is
producing wine not just of good quality, but also with
individuality, character and style. Nearly
every article sings out about the
number of awards English
wines are scooping at
international wine
English
Wine Week
27th May -
4th June
trade awards
and quoting
stats on the
number
of
vineyards, but where do you start if you just want to enjoy a
glass of homegrown English wine?
Although there are red, white and rosé wines produced in
England (and Wales), sparkling has been the biggest story
to date. Chalky south-facing slopes and a longer season of
warmer weather create the right environment to produce
Champagne style wines made in the traditional method which
allows us to rival our French counterparts on their top fizz
with great success. Blind wine tastings with experts prove
this to be true, as does the investment on our shores of some
of the great Champagne houses including Tattinger and
Pommery who are looking for a piece of the action.
But do not overlook the still wines... Champagne grapes are
clearly working well here so these are good styles to opt for.
We all love a cool climate elegant Chardonnay or Pinot Noir
be it from Burgundy, Australia and USA, and you can add
English wines into this list. Other grape varieties working
well in the UK are ‘Germanic’ such as Bacchus and Müller
Thurgau. They are fresh and lively wines with many flavours
that we associate with England green apple, elderflower
coupled with zesty lime and grapefruit and on occasion a
delicate flinty note.
1. Castle Brook, £29.90, Thirsty, Chesterton Road
Planted on an old Roman vineyard in Herefordshire,
produced from the three ‘Champagne’ varieties Pinot Noir,
Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay in the traditional Brut style.
A deliciously delicate fizz with a hint of lemon blossom,
brioche and toasty notes this wine has been described as
‘Summer in a glass’. Perfect.
2. Bolney Wine Estate Pinot Noir 2015, £18
www.bolneywineestate.com
Cherry, bacon and cedar this will take you through a meal
from roast chicken or pork to a berry pudding and even works
The richness of fruit and flint makes this wine individual.
A True
Treat
Take a look at what Tuddenham Mill’s
seasonal set lunch menu has to offer and
perhaps book a stay in one of their
new contemporary Nooks
Tuddenham Mill
High Street, Tuddenham, IP28 6SQ
Tel: 01638 713552
www.tuddenhammill.co.uk
Having been awarded 3 AA rosettes at the beginning
of the year, Tuddenham Mill are now one of only two
locations in the county to hold this accreditation and
we are certainly not surprised. They’re famed within the
area for their picturesque setting, exceptional food and
stunning accommodation so we headed along to sample
their new spring lunch menu… oh, and take a peek at their
new contemporary Meadow Nooks!
Tuddenham Mill’s award-winning kitchen team is headed
up by Lee Bye who has been crafting delicious dishes
since he started here in 2014. “I love creating exciting,
contemporary menus which are reflective of the seasons
and the fantastic local produce we have on offer across the
region,” he explains as he is talking us through today’s set
lunch menu.
“I love spring as there is just so much on offer and it really
enables me to play with certain flavours. Asparagus is one
of my favourites at the moment and it’s really at its best
at the moment. We get ours just down the road from
Tilbrooks and the taste is like no other,” explains Lee.
Following this, we thought it was only best we sampled the
asparagus starter which is served with Worlington goose
egg, wild garlic and Pecorino. We also opted for Reg’s
duck liver parfait which was served on brioche and topped
with glazed hearts and land cress. Lee was right. The
asparagus really was like no other and the stalks were thick
and packed full of flavour. The colouring was impressive
and the goose egg was poached to perfection. This was a
satisfying start for what was to follow. The duck liver parfait
was light yet incredibly rich as it lay on the sweet light
brioche. This too packed a flavoursome punch.
When it came to the main event, we again welcomed
the advice, this time of the waitress. “The Breckland
lamb is sensational and it’s been our most popular,” as
she explained the accompanying elements as well as
detailing some of the other
“I love creating
exciting,
contemporary
menus which
are reflective
of the seasons.”
dishes on offer. We also
chose the hake which was
a hard decision as it was up
against Cavenham Heath
muntjac and king oyster
mushroom. As with all
of their dishes, they are
presented beautifully and
each is a piece of culinary
art in its own right with the
striking colouring and unique arrangement. The local lamb
was a generous size and oozed flavour. It was served with
kofta ragout, yoghurt, mint and St Edmunds ale which all
complemented each other in different ways. “This dish
combines a unique mix of simple flavours to create a new
take on lamb. It’s been a popular one for us already and the
lamb we source from Breckland in Norfolk,” Lee tells us.
The hake ‘tranche’ was seriously generous
and flaked with ease. It had a delicate
flavour which wasn’t overpowering but the
brown shrimps served alongside it were a
welcome touch. This too was served with
the Mill’s favourite asparagus, Fenland
cauliflower and sobrasada.
Dessert sparked yet more flavoursome
fireworks. As a serious chocolate lover, I
was reeled in by sea buckthorn posset with
Pump Street chocolate and hazelnut oil and
what a choice it was. The creamy orange
posset was divine and the rich chocolate
crumb worked perfectly. This was a real
winner for me and really rounded it off
nicely. The Jonagold apple with buffalo
ricotta, village honey and filo also made
the cut. The apple was drenched in honey
and the pistachios and filo again added a
welcome crunch.
Having thoroughly enjoyed 3 courses
(which may I add is priced at only £22.50!),
I felt pleasantly satisfied and not at all
overwhelmed. They certainly opt for quality
over quantity and each dish was faultless. I
can certainly see why they’ve gained the 3
AA rosettes and would suggest a visit with
friends, family or a loved one. The setting is
unique in that it can be suitable to a casual
affair or to mark a special occasion and
there seemed to be a mix of both whilst
we dined.
After, we took a look around their new
Nooks which are placed out in the meadow
by the mill stream. They’re rustic yet
romantic and are certainly deceiving when
it comes to size. The interior is well thought
out and has everything you need for an
uninterrupted stayover. They really feel
as though you’re completely secluded.
The wood-fired hot tub, floating beds and
elegant interior were the highlights for me.
Oh and their signature Missoni dressing
gowns and ESPA goodies…
Not So Run
Of The Mill
Hear about the delicious flavours on
offer at Cambridge’s Quy Mill
Quy Mill Hotel and Spa sits just off the A14, within the limits of
the picturesque village of Stow-Cum-Quy. Driving up to the mill,
which was rebuilt on this spot around 1830 and only ceased bread
production in 1948, you get a sense of the old traditions but also
a view that now, in its current form as a hotel and spa, fresh
things are happening with the newer buildings around it.
I was greeted by Tony Murdock, the General Manager, in
the spacious reception area and, as he leads me in to one
of the conservatory style dining spaces, he explains that
the hotel has been recently awarded four silver stars by
the AA board and are looking for a red star in about a year
and a half. This is not an easy feat but you can tell by his
passion he doesn’t want the place to remain ‘run of the
mill’ so to speak.
Shortly after being seated, looking out on to the rolling
Cambridgeshire fields, I met Head Chef, Gavin Murphy,
who brought out the first course. He explains that it is his
version of ‘Surf n Turf’ for special guests and from what was laid
before me on the table; the ingredients of this dish couldn’t have
been any more generous.
The slice of delicately pan-fried foie gras was graced with a juicy
looking King Scallop. Upon the perfectly cooked shellfish was
tomato fondue with caper popcorn and beef jus around the outside
to finish the dish. From the first mouthful the buttery richness
of the fork-soft foie gras seemed to effortlessly complement the
searing of the plump scallop. I could tell from the first mouthful
that we were in good hands with chef.
The accompanying factors of the dish also played their parts. The
tomato and the capers keep the flavours gracefully dancing on the
tongue like a Russian ballet and the drizzle of beef jus bonded the
elements together well.
The Donegal chef comes across as very customer-orientated and
loves to give the public what they want and whilst some chefs are
losing themselves in the hunt for
“We are
stepping up
another level
here so we can
hopefully get a
third rosette.”
Michelin stardom, he knows his goal.
“We are stepping up another level
here so we can hopefully get a third
rosette, that will mean creating brand
new dishes and will hopefully be
introducing them very soon, the third
is very achievable,” he said.
With my first fully empty plate I could
not have agreed more with Gavin.
This was replaced by the main course,
a canon of sirloin beef, baby carrots, Dauphinoise potatoes, pea
purée and a hotel special ‘Quy Ketchup’. In a separate copper pan,
sat an ox tail and cheek pie with a slice of crispy pancetta sticking
out of the top.
The main dish was delicious. The creaminess of the cubed potato,
the pink beef and the zing that the ketchup gave were great but for
me there was a standout part to this course.
The chef informed me not only does the meat for the pie braise for
a full three days, but his customers actually ask for this as a dish on
its own. I could totally see why.
The creamy mash on top revealed the shredded treasure beneath. It
melted in the mouth and gave a soul food experience that seemed
to cuddle you like a dear friend. I could quite honestly have had a
whole bowl of that and done my Oliver part in asking for more. This
was the highlight of the meal for me.
On how his menu works, Gavin explained he is open to trying new
dishes and go wherever his mood takes him. “We have a golden rule
to change with the seasons but sometimes we get fed up of looking
at the same dishes, we might then change a dish or the entire
menu,” he explained.
Dessert was my final plate to the table, Vanilla panna cotta,
raspberry macaroon, and glazed fig with brandy snap. The plump
panna cotta shimmered and wobbled perfectly and the taste of
vanilla gave a somewhat refreshing morsel to the boldness of the
course before it. Breaking the macaroon’s crisp exterior gave way to
the soft sugary sweetness of the raspberry filling and the fig gave a
balanced calmness to the rest of the slate plate.
Gavin can see his food gradually improving to the three rosette
standard in the future and even though he may not be looking for
Michelin stars, I can definitely see it in the future for this very lovely
place and their passionate Irish chef.
Redefining The Classics
Industry-leading hospitality team, The Chestnut Group,
have reinvented Woodditton’s village pub with an
enviable menu and charming setting
The Chestnut Group are back with
yet another venture - The Blackbirds
Inn located just 3 miles outside of
Newmarket. Following the huge
success of The Northgate in Bury
St Edmunds which opened at the
end of last year as well as the group’s
three other hotspots; The Rupert
Brooke in Grantchester, The White
Horse in Easton and the much-loved
Packhorse Inn in Moulton, Philip
Turner and his team have been going
from strength to strength since their
inception in 2012. They have firmly
established themselves within the
region for offering a fine hospitality
experience.
Each of their five locations has
something different to offer and this
uniqueness is what sets them apart. It
also means we like visiting each for a
different reason!
Located in the quaint village of
Woodditton, The Blackbirds Inn,
formerly The Three Blackbirds, has
undergone a sensitive but noticeable
refurbishment. After attaining the
property in August of last year, the
site was in need of a little TLC to
bring it up to The Chestnut Group’s
standards. “The opportunity for us
to acquire The Three Blackbirds was
incredibly exciting. The Packhorse Inn,
has been an overwhelming success
and incredibly well supported by the
local community. We look forward to
extending this with The Blackbirds Inn,
but with an altogether more relaxed
hospitality experience,” Philip Turner,
Founder of The Chestnut Group, told
us.
Relaxed is certainly the vibe we got
when welcomed by the team just days
after the opening. The décor is similar
to that of The Packhorse Inn, with its
17th century features and individual
character. It has an instantly ‘at-home’
feel to it which is undoubtedly down to
the friendly faces and elegant interior.
The casual and welcoming nature
is also reflected in their extensive
dining menu. Similarly, to their other
four sites, they pride themselves on
offering the very best of seasonal
and local produce which is in keeping
with our favourite pub classics. The
menu is graced with everything from
various steak cuts to their ‘pie of the
week’, Newmarket bangers and mash
and their ‘fish of the day’. New to the
scene are their range of homemade pizzas
from their in-house, stone-baked pizza
oven. It’s ‘The Newmarket’ which caught
our attention… It’s topped with pulled
pork, caramelised apple and Suffolk Gold
cheese. If you’re just fancying a light bite,
they have of course got this covered too
on their sandwich menu.
If you’re in to your Sunday lunches,
you will have no doubt experienced the
delights of The Packhorse but there’s now
even more choice over at The Blackbirds
Inn. Choose from traditional roast beef or
pork or take your pick from the Sunday
specials.
All are served with seasonal veggies and
traditional trimmings. If you’ve got little
ones, they’ve also got this covered with
their homemade smaller plates and wait
for this… they’ve even got a dog’s menu.
Yes… a menu for our furry four-legged
friends! Count us in.
The face behind the group’s elegant
menus is their executive chef, Dan
Grigg. “It’s been a pleasure to craft yet
another exclusive menu for the latest
location in our portfolio. The food here
is best described as wholesome, hearty
traditional pub food which is cooked
brilliantly. We’ve set out to redefine
quality pub food as this has been
somewhat side-lined with the growth
of gastropubs. The menu here is based
about everyone’s favourite pub classics
which a few interested additions like our
cajun-rubbed bream and the new stonebaked
pizzas. The initial feedback from
our customers has been overwhelmingly
positive and I’m really excited about what
is to come here,” Dan tells us.
Whether you’re popping in for a midweek
pint, a hearty pub dinner or perhaps
a quick lunch, The Blackbirds Inn really do
have it all. If you’re perhaps celebrating a
special occasion, why not take a look at
The Gun Room – a private area for larger
parties. Timing couldn’t have been better
as it’s now open just in time for the racing
season to begin!
Watch this space as work will soon
begin on the nine bedrooms which are
scheduled to open in spring of next year.
Whitsun Fayre
Two TV gardeners are helping the Bury St Edmunds’ popular
Whitsun Fayre bloom this spring as it celebrates its 20th
anniversary. Katie Rushworth from ITV’s Love Your Garden and
Joe Swift from BBC 2’s flagship gardening show Gardeners'
World will be talking about their work and answering gardening
questions in Bury St Edmunds town centre over the Whitsun
Bank Holiday weekend.
The free event, which started as a flower and plant market 20
years ago has now grown to a fun-filled family weekend that’s
not just for the green-fingered. This year it will once again see
Angel Hill hosting the motorsports show that was part of the
event for the first time last year. Other attractions include
fairground rides, the ever-popular urban beach, a range of stalls
and animals at the family-favourite mini-farm.
Chief Executive of Ourburystedmunds Mark Cordell
said: “You could say we are going back to our garden
roots with this year’s anniversary event. We’re focusing
on flowers, plants and gardening and with Katie and
Joe’s help on Sunday and Monday respectively, we
will have an entertaining and informative programme
on the stage outside Moyse's Hall. As we are
immediately after the Chelsea Flower Show we
hope people who’ve been inspired by watching
it on TV will want to find out how to create
similar gardens at home.”
Summer at
Scudamore’s
What better way to enjoy the sunshine than
Visit
a Scudamore’s punting
tour in Cambridge
Scudamore’s first introduced their punting
tours along the River Cam back in the
early 20th century. Remaining true to Jack
Scudamore’s original vision, the team’s
main aim is to ensure the surroundings
are enjoyed with their traditional boating
services.
Their original private punt tours are the
ideal introduction to Cambridge’s eventful
history. Sit back and appreciate the views
as your punting guide explains the history
of the world-famous centre of academic
excellence. If you’re looking for something
a little more hands on, why not hire one
and punt yourself? Alongside the standard
punting, Scudamore’s also have an extensive
range of special tours.
PARTY PUNTING
Celebrate a special occasion with
family and friends on one of their
various party punts. Choose from
the champagne or Pimm’s punt
tour and sip your beverage along
the river. Or how about boarding a
punt adorned with balloons to really
signal a celebration. There is even a
cocktail-making punting tour thanks
to Cambridge’s Revolution and an
afternoon tea tour in partnership
with the Doubletree by Hilton. What
a great idea for a weekend catch up
with friends or perhaps a hen party.
SEASONAL SPECIAL EVENTS
With spring in full swing and summer
soon approaching, Scudamore’s have
an abundance of seasonal events.
This June, they are holding a series
of Fireworks Punting Tours for the
legendary May Ball firework display
which are taking place on 19th June
for Clare and Trinity College and the
20th June for St. John’s College.
Punts will depart at 9:30pm and last
for approximately 90 minutes.
BAT SAFARI
Back this year is also their Wildlife
Trust Bat Safari which takes place
towards Grantchester Meadows.
This is your chance to see the
local bat population emerge from
hibernation and to experience
something a little different. Make
the most of it with the electronic
bat detector to convert their sonar
signals into audible frequencies.
Whilst the summer is prime punting
time, Scudamore’s are actually
open 364 days a year. They offer
a range of different annual tickets
which are great if you’re looking to
experience the river regularly. Annual
tickets offer a choice of self-hire
punts, kayaks and canoes. For more
A Cause For Celebration
Local Business
The Bull Inn
The Street, Barton Mills, Bury
St Edmunds, IP28 6AA
Tel: 01638 711001
www.bullinn-bartonmills.com
10 years on and it seems owners, Cheryl and Wayne, did
know what they were doing with Barton Mills’ village pub
The 16th May 2007 was the date that was
to change the fortunes of the run down
and loss-making Bull Inn at Barton Mills.
Newcomers to the industry Cheryl Hickman
and Wayne Starling took the ‘bull by the
horns’ and haven’t looked back since. Nonbelievers
said to the couple at the beginning
“you don’t know what you are doing” but this
is what spurred them on.
The journey has been a rollercoaster with
plenty of amazing highs and plenty of
challenges and hard work along the way. But
buckets of team commitment, motivation
and an unfailing dedication to success is what
has enabled this couple to prove they did
know what they were doing.
They transformed the The Bull Inn into an
award-winning, modern yet historically
sympathetic and hugely funky coaching inn.
It’s now a popular local hotspot where friends
meet for lunch, families come for breakfast
and business people stay over. It’s different to
your normal pub with rooms as guests enjoy
quality food and AA rosette dining rooms.
The business has seen year on year growth
since the first year and hundreds of
thousands of pounds have been reinvested
to create what it is today. After the initial 6
months, Cheryl and Wayne couldn’t carry on
doing the 7am to sometimes 3 or 4am in the
morning!
These shifts were 7 days a week and they
could see this would be a potential problem
to the business becoming successful, so
Sonia (Cheryl’s sister) joined the team fulltime
making the Inn a real family affair. This
also allowed Cheryl and Wayne to take some
time out which enabled them to remain
upbeat and focused.
The couple have led the team and the
business to win many awards over the years
and have maintained their AA rosette for
their food offering. One of their best awards
achieved is the ‘Funkiest Inn in the UK’ as
voted by the anonymous AA inspectors.
“We had a strong vision of what we wanted
The Bull to be and we have stayed true to
that throughout. The resulting success is a
real testament to the commitment, hard
work, determination and dedication of all
involved. Many a time along the way people
have said “you shouldn’t do it that way”, or
“that will never work”, but we stayed strong
and we are now in an amazing position from
where the business was. The building was
about to be demolished 10 years ago! We
are now a multi award-winning business with
national press coverage, yet still have our
feet firmly on the ground as we continue to
support our local community,” says Cheryl.
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
Director: Kenneth Lonergan
Stars: Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler
Release Date: 15th May
Of all this year’s Oscar contenders, Kenneth Lonergan’s third film
as director probably had the least in the way of hooks. His story,
of Casey Affleck’s emotionally stunted loner connecting with his
grieving nephew, could best be described as bleak, and the same
goes for the scenery. Affleck’s performance, understated as it is,
is probably the films main selling point, and it is his chemistry with
newcomer Lucas Hedges – impressive as his nephew - that makes
a slightly empty plot, oddly compelling.
THE EMOJI MOVIE
Directors: Tony Leondis
Stars: T.J. Miller, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Coolidge
Release Date: August 2017
The announcement of The Emoji Movie was met with disbelief
by many. Could the pint-sized characters that we use in our daily
communications really carry a feature film on their own? A widely
panned teaser trailer has failed to answer this question, and those
hoping for an Inside Out inspired parable on the nature of emotion
may be left disappointed. There is some hope though in the
presence of James Corden, T.J Miller and most of all Patrick Stewart
on voiceover duties.
It Starts With Denim...
Take a look at John Lewis’ new AND/OR
denim range available in Cambridge
‘Great denim works with everything and it makes everything work,’ is
the simple formula behind John Lewis’ new AND/OR denim range.
All of the pieces in the collection have been authentically crafted
on the West Coast and have been designed, cut, washed, sewn and
finished in California. The name behind it all is Calvin Rucker. Rucker
has crafted a unique collection of both genuine cuts and heritage
washes to ensure there’s a style for all. “Each jean feels soft and flexible
but keeps its shape all day long,” explains Rucker.
Helen Turner, Fashion Operations Manager at John Lewis, Cambridge,
says, ‘We are thrilled to be one of the 10 John Lewis stores that have
been chosen to take part in the launch of AND/OR. Each element of
the collection is thoughtfully designed and really wearable whether it
is bought as part an outfit or as an individual piece. The collection also
includes shoes, handbags and lingerie meaning you have everything
need to put together a lovely, relaxed style.”
Tips From
The Top
“The Moët & Chandon July Festival is one
of my highlights of the summer season
at Newmarket Racecourses. Ladies Day
on Thursday, 13th July hosts The Style
Awards, where we encourage racegoers
to dress to impress for their chance to win
thousands of pounds worth of prizes.
The Style Awards in the fashion marquee
fantastic place and showcase of beautiful
racing outfits and styles.We’re looking
forward to welcoming a new panel of
judges who will be looking out for that
stand-out look that’s elegant and chic, but
also unique to that individual. Whether
the outfit is bright with frills or subtle
Denise Taylor, a member of the Personal Styling team at
John Lewis Cambridge, has chosen her top pick for the coming
racing season.
“I have chosen this gorgeous outfit as it’s so versatile and the
individual pieces can be worn for other occasions. Try the knitted
bolero with a soft blouse and jeans for a relaxed weekend look.
The Fenn Wright Manson Ibiza dress (£149) is exclusive to John
Lewis and also comes in a petite version. It has been paired with
a matching Fenn Wright Manson Florence bolero (£99) which
brings out the pink in the dress and keeps the look fresh and
summery. The John Lewis Alma Block Heeled Court Shoes (£79)
in navy suede look great but also prevent you sinking into the grass
at the racecourse! They will also go nicely with the our Patent
Clutch Bag (£25). Bringing the outfit neatly together, and adding
a touch of elegance to your race day outfit, is the glamorous John
Lewis Patsy Oval Disc Occasion Hat (£125).”
“Dressing for Ladies Day can be a minefield of dresses, jackets
and shoes but we’ve created an outfit that’s elegant, fashionable
and classy all at once,” says the team at Bury St Edmunds’
independent fashion boutique, Javelin. “We love this Ted Baker
floral skater dress (£149) because of its eye-catching floral print
and the flattering fit. It nips in at the waist and the full skirt is
on-trend for the season.
The soft-touch woven fabric and zip back also make this one a
winner. We’ve added a simple Vivienne Westwood clutch (£350)
to make the whole outfit flow and best of all, this bag has two
compartments so plenty of space to fit your racing essentials.
These Ted Baker grey suede court shoes (£135) with rose gold
trim add a little extra glamour with their update on a classic shape.
Enjoy your day with a small glass of something bubbly and feel
fabulous in an outfit that’s effortlessly stylish.”
Giulio
With the racing season quickly approaching, Ladies Day at
Newmarket is the hottest ticket available and Giulio Fashion are
here to help match the outfit to the occasion.
“Our best advice would be to keep it simple but bold and
classy. This hummingbird dress from Red Valentino (£675)
has a colourful print and an elegant silhouette but still makes a
statement. Giuseppe Zanotti is known for his beautifully crafted
shoes and these black leather Harmony sandals (£570) are
perfect for those summery days and would go perfectly with
this dress. To finish the look, add an accessory like this beautiful
beaded chain necklace from Isabel Marant Étoile (£160) and
these Givenchy tortoiseshell sunglasses (£255). Once the night
draws in, the final race has finished and the music starts playing,
layer up with this cropped jacket, also from Red Valentino (£635).
Our other top tip would be to pack a pair of flat shoes for later
in the day. Our top pick would be these Giuseppe Zanotti Gaia
sandals (£360) as they’ll fit in your bag and still go with your
look. Talking of bags, opt for one with a shoulder strap so you can
still hold your drink! We love this slate blue Burberry banner bag
(£950).” - Giulio Fashion Team
“This midnight blue dress (£609) from luxury occasion wear
brand, Inspirato, has a unique lace and bead overlay and is perfect
for racing or any other special occasion. Both the colour and cut
are timeless and will work for years to come.
The dress works well alone or perhaps with a wrap but this short
jacket makes it suitable if the weather isn’t as hoped and can also
be worn with other outfits too. The hatinator with matching trim
really completes the look and makes it a strong contender for a
Ladies Day winner,” says Sue Ross, owner at Cream of Royston
“When choosing your hat or fascinator there are
a few important factors to consider such as the
weather, your hair length and chosen style and
also your dress or outfit. In my opinion, wearing
your hair down looks best with most hats of
fascinators but there are some which give way to
a low side bun or braid. Wide-brimmed hats work
well on both long and short hair and they are all
worth trying on. Most hats vary on the individual
and will look different on everybody. Choosing the
perfect headpiece is all about experimentation.
My final piece of advice would be that your hat
doesn’t have to exactly match your outfit but it
should complement it with regards to colour.”
“Ever since we heard that Ascot has relaxed its rules regarding
jumpsuits at the races, we’ve been wondering... contemporary or
classic? Which look is right for Ladies Day?
To help make the all-important decision for Newmarket’s Ladies
Day, we’ve put together two contrasting outfits. The first is
centered upon our Paulina jumpsuit (£169). It’s modern and
asymmetric, yet it nods to the timeless race-day style of Audrey
Hepburn with black and white colour blocking. We’ve added our
mini Pimlico bag (£149) in tan to lift the palette, and a pair white
scallop-edged sandals (£139). For our classic look, we went for
pure femininity. We’re talking Betty Draper-esque elegance:
oversized florals and a frivolous full skirt with our Taryn dress
(£179) The neckline of the dress elongates and, when paired with
the nipped waist, it exudes effortless sunshine glamour. But which
look is the winner? Place your bets now.” - Personal styling at
Hobbs in Cambridge
Nicola Sexton
“Dressing for a day at the races
should be something you look
forward to – not a chore! It’s the
perfect time to dress up and really
make an effort… Have you seen some of
the prizes on offer for the best dressed lady?
Whilst you might not be fussed about winning
or even entering, be sure to experiment and
try something new.
We have many stunning pieces in the
boutique this season but my top pick
would be this gorgeous short suit
(jacket £219 and shorts £89). The gold
colouring is subtle yet sure to make a
statement and the pearl edging around
the jacket really completes the look.
We have chosen to accessorize with
a cream hat (£280) by Mary-Anne
Morrison who makes really beautiful
occasion pieces, including
bespoke. We have finished the
look with our Sachelle Couture
by Nicola Sexton shoes (£149)
in cream, along with matching
handbag (£142). The block heel
works perfectly as you will not want
to be sinking in to the lawn! This look
is simple and on-trend, yet timeless.
Each piece will also be able to be
worn again to create different looks
for other occasions you may have
coming up this summer.”
Hats Off!
Hear from mother and daughter duo, Hannah and Sue
Taylor from Newmarket Hat Hire about the best head
pieces for the upcoming racing season
Spring has officially sprung and the flat
racing season has just kicked off. The
team at Newmarket Hat Hire have over
900 fabulous hats and fascinators and
undoubtedly have the one you’re looking
for. This year they expanded their
collection with lots more stunning pieces
from high-end milliners. Now in their
23rd year of business, Hannah and Sue
have crafted a rather unique assortment.
Their open-plan showroom in Fordham
showcases their entire collection which
is available to both hire and purchase.
They also offer an outstanding service
whereby they can customise and alter
individual pieces to suit the customer.
This often involves adding feathers,
flowers or other detailing elements and
perhaps changing the colour to suit the
exact shade or tone.
“We always encourage our customers
to bring their outfits with them. We
have several large changing rooms and
full length mirrors to ensure they’re
completely happy with the overall look,”
Sue tells us.
2017 Forecast
“This year’s colour palette is heavily
dominated by greys, taupes, blush pinks and
cobalt blues. When it comes to the shape and
style, hats have much lower crowns which
are swept off the face. This style is also great
for the mother of the bride as it eliminates
any chance of shadows across the face in
photographs,” adds Sue.
Top Tips
1. Pick a hat which is comfortable as you’re
going to be wearing it all day.
2. Experiment with something a little different
and opt for colours you may not usually pick.
3. Don’t let your age determine your look.
Both hats and fascinators look great on all ages
so be sure to try a range of headpieces.
4. Don’t always match your hat or fascinator
with your shoes or bag. The colour of your
dress or outfit should be a strong starting point.
“The Dead Cert”
Sue and Hannah tell us which is their
favourite piece in the showroom at the
moment. “We love this versatile hat which is
supported by a headband. It’s comfortable to
wear and would suit almost anyone. This would
work best teamed with pinks of greys and it’s
bound to get you noticed!”
An Array of Elegance
Sinéad O’Loghlen, owner at
Cambridge’s independent
fashion boutique, Elegant
Atelier, tells us a little more
about her boutique fashion
offering on Rose Crescent
TELL US A LITTLE MORE ELEGANT ATELIER’S JOURNEY TO DATE.
I opened Elegant Atelier in November 2015 after a lot of thought
and planning. My vision was to sell a range of clothing which
combined outstanding design with quality workmanship and bring
pieces to Cambridge which were different yet still versatile and
wearable. The name Elegant Atelier embodies just that; elegant
meaning discerning, sophisticated, distinguished or classic in
appearance and atelier meaning an artisan’s workshop or studio.
WHICH BRANDS DO YOU STOCK AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO
WORK WITH THESE PARTICULAR ONES?
I stock a range of brands including Ba&sh, Humanoid, Transit,
Pomandére, RIXO, Rose Rankin, King & Tuckfield, Custommade,
Kokoon, 2nd Day, Kelly Love and more. French label, Ba&sh
was the first brand I bought into after I came across it whilst
on holiday in Bordeaux. I loved the fabrics and style and when I
first contacted the company I hadn’t even found the premises
on Rose Crescent! They saw my passion and stuck with me
whilst I got up and running. They launched in 2003 by two
friends, Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief and their concept is
everyday pieces which successfully balance both femininity and
sophistication. Their sumptuous fabrics are another reason why I
love them.
Dutch brand, Humanoid and Italian brand, Transit are two other
brands which I have been buying for years. They have a slightly
edgy feel and are of really high quality. I love that they have both
remained true to their unique style whilst
still being on-trend season after season.
Another I love is Italian brand, Pomandére.
They have a variety of tailored pieces which
are again made in a range of stunning
fabrics and are a blend of both masculine
and feminine style.
Other brands which I have found along
the way are Custommade, Kokoon & 2nd
Day as well as emerging brands such as
King & Tuckfield, Rose Rankin, Kelly Love
and RIXO. They all bring something a little
different to my collection which is great.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
PERSONAL STYLE?
I would say I have an eclectic style when
it comes to fashion. I often build my
wardrobe around a few staple pieces
each season such as a tailored jacket, a
statement shirt or blouse, a versatile dress
or pair of trousers for example. I work
around these to create different looks as
it’s a great way of wearing certain items in
different ways. It also means you can justify
investing in a few high quality pieces.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES IN
STORE THIS SEASON?
There are lots of beautiful pieces in for
spring/summer but one of my favourites
is definitely Pomandére’s red jacket. It’s
a brick red colour and has a leather tie. It
looks great teamed with jeans or trousers
and a pretty shirt or blouse. Ba&sh
have a really lovely orange print top this
season too. The print looks like a Clarice
Cliff pottery design which really makes a
statement. It’s perfect when paired with
Ba&sh’s Sally jeans in ecru. They’re slim
fit and mid rise at the front but slightly
higher at the back meaning they’re really
flattering. Denim is always going to be
popular, whatever the time of year and I
cannot get enough of King & Tuckfield’s
Briony Japanese Selvedge jeans. These too
are very flattering and look great with a
jacket and pretty blouse. They’re also made
here in the UK and are a definite musthave
for everyone!
Be sure to pop in to
Sinéad’s elegant boutique to
explore these hand-picked
brands for yourself.
BEST TURNED OUT
Hear from the team at Martha V about their top
picks for dressing for a day at the races
Martha V has been providing on-trend, luxury labels at the top of
Newmarket’s high street for over 8 years now. Being located in the
town which is the ‘home of horseracing’ has meant they have really
mastered the look and are able to advise accordingly.
“When it comes to choosing your outfit for a day at the races, it’s
important to consider the meeting you’re attending. All race days
warrant a smart dress but our most popular day for customers is
certainly Ladies’ Day at The July Festival. Whilst it’s all about achieving
the ‘wow’ factor, it’s also important to be comfortable. Always consider
your footwear. Wedges work best at the racecourse due to the grass
underfoot. Alternatively opt for a block heel as opposed to thin stiletto
heels. Be sure to factor in a jacket too as you can never rely on the
British weather unfortunately,” explains owner Martha.
This year, we have lots of stunning pieces in store from a wide range
of labels. Our most popular brands are Zeila, Cabotine, Luis Civit and
Veni Infantino. The latter is a relatively new label for us but it was very
popular last year. We have some stunning Luis Civit and Cabotine
dresses this year which come with jackets too. New to us this year
are labels Dress Code and Marfil,” adds Martha. “When it comes to
colours this year, there are lots of pastel shades and pink. Champagne
and neutrals are also popular when it comes to racing attire, as are
navy and monochrome. Lace and floral prints are also popular with our
racing customers year in year out and this year will be no exception.
We sell a lot of outfits which customers wear for both racing and
an upcoming wedding. It’s great to be able to get more than
one use out of your outfit.”
blissful opportunity to relax in the great outdoors. Appreciate the fresh air and tranquility of
Hello
sunshine
As May welcomes Sun Awareness
Week, we take a look at the ongoing
importance of wearing sun
protection factor (SPF)
According to the British Association of
Dermatologists, 8 out of 10 of us are
failing to adequately apply sunscreen
before going out in the sun. Further
research from NIVEA Sun and Cancer
Research UK proves that there is in fact
much confusion around the topic.
Debugging the myths
“The sun in the UK isn’t as strong.”
SUN
AWARENESS
WEEK
8TH - 14TH
MAY
Wrong. It is just as important to wear SPF here. Over 66% of us
admitted to protecting our skin more when we are on holiday than
in the UK and research also revealed that 80% of us have been
sunburnt in the UK.
4 5
“If I’ve got sunscreen on, I won’t burn.”
Wrong. Over 20% of us believe that we cannot get sunburnt if
we’ve got sunscreen on but this is not the case. It is best to be
safe and wear suitable clothing as well as spending some time in
the shade.
“I won’t get a tan if I wear sunscreen.”
Wrong. Over 20% of us have gone out in the sun without wearing
SPF because they have wanted to get a tan. SPF will not stop you
tanning but it will stop sunburn and skin damage.
Remember... always wear SPF, both abroad
and here in the UK. Always make sure you’re
wearing a minimum of SPF 15. Don’t over do
it and be sure to cover up and spend some
time in the shade. Do reapply your sunscreen
after a few hours and if you’re in the water
make sure yours is waterproof.
LOTS TO SMILE ABOUT AT
ANGLIA ORTHODONTICS
A smile says a lot about a person. It not only reflects your
mood but it can also affect someone else’s! The team at Anglia
Orthodontics are passionate about offering expert advice and
professional treatment to ensure your smile is the best it can be.
The team of specialist orthodontists here are trained specifically
to improve the appearance, position and function of your teeth.
From fixed braces to the increasingly popular Invisalign treatment,
they are known for modern cosmetic dental treatments which are
best suited to your needs.
TOP TIPS
Ensure your orthodontic treatment runs smoothly with the team’s
top tips:
• A fixed brace can easily trap food and unwanted plaque can
build up. Prevent this by spending at least 5 minutes, 3 times a
time brushing your teeth properly. Do this after breakfast, lunch
and dinner.
• Use a soft bristled brush (either manual or electric) along with
a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. You will also need a tepe
brush for cleaning behind the wire and down the sides of the
brackets.
• Thorough cleaning will also prevent decalcification (the
staining or discoloration around where the braces
were), cavities or decay and gingivitis.
• Following treatment, always wear your retainers
at night for the first couple of years.
This will ensure your teeth remain in their final
position. If they appear tight, this could be
because your teeth are trying to move if you
have not worn them for a couple of nights
so don’t waste your hard work. If you lose or
break them come back soon to us.
NEW TO ORTHODONTICS TECHNOLOGY
Anglia Orthodontics are a Digital Impression Practice and proud
Owners of an iTero Element Intraoral Scanner meaning they
make a great first impression... literally! The iTero Element Scanner
is a state-of-the-art digital impression system that eliminates
the need for messy putty in your mouth. With their scanner, they
can digitally capture a detailed 3D model of your teeth and gums.
Not only is this process far more comfortable than the old putty
based impressions, but it’s faster and can offer a superior clinical
endpoint.
• No goop or gag to worry about
• Fast, accurate impression
• Ideal for Invisalign clear aligners and retainers
• See a simulation of your potential post-treatment smile
During the impression process, you can breathe or swallow as
you normally would. You can even pause during the process if you
need to sneeze or just want to ask a question. The scanner gives a
3D model of your mouth that they use with all Invisalign services
including the Invisalign Outcome Simulator to show you what your
new smile might look like.
Dose Up On
Vitamin D
Sales of vitamin D supplements in Waitrose
shops surged by 70% in the two weeks following
publication of NHS-backed research that
suggested a daily dose of the ‘sunshine vitamin’
could prevent more than three million people falling
ill through respiratory infections each year. The
retailer’s multivitamins sales also rose sharply.
Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, which
means people in the UK are more at risk of
deficiency during the winter months. However,
media coverage around the recent study also
highlighted which foods are particularly good
sources, such as oily fish. According to the British
Nutrition Foundation, canned red salmon contains
the most, with 15.3 micrograms per 140g portion.
Waitrose has also seen sales of this tinned fish
grow by 22% since the results of the study were
announced.
Moira Howie, Waitrose Nutrition Manager says,
“Awareness about the importance of vitamin D in
the daily diet has been gaining momentum over
recent weeks. Through the spring, summer and
autumn when the sun
shines our bodies can
generally make sufficient
vitamin D for our needs,
particularly if oily fish,
eggs and fortified
breakfast cereals are
part of the weekly diet.
But a supplement can
certainly make good
sense during the winter
A SCENTS OF SPRING
With the days getting warmer
and spring having officially
sprung, it’s time to open your
doors and fill your home with
that fresh spring breeze.
As we know all too well,
the British weather is
temperamental, so to save
you from the occasional chill,
bring in the scents of spring
in another way. Lighting a
scented candle not only creates
Take a look at our top picks
a beautiful aroma around your
home, it also creates a peaceful
ambience and a real sense of
calm. Choosing your scent is
personal preference but this
spring there are lots of fresh
seasonal ones to choose from.
Look for ingredients which ooze
freshness such as lemon, linen
and essential oils. Looking to
bring the outside in? Aim for
floral notes.
SPRING BOTANICALS
This set includes three candles – Seychelles, Lime & Bay and
Flowers - all of which look every bit as beautiful as they smell. Each
candle contains a striking inclusion of materials, from dark green
bay leaves and slices of lime to petals and seashells. The set also
includes a ceramic candle plate to burn your candle on, too.
FUN IN
THE JUNGLE
One of the major interior trends
this season is jungle-inspired
tropical prints and vibrant colours.
It’s anything but subtle, but take
the plunge and breathe life into
your home this year. Opt for bright
greens and palm prints as well as
animal-inspired accessories and
indoor plants. If you want to feel
exotic but without the extravagant
wallpapers and large prints, try
experimenting with block colours or
smaller accessories.
Business is Blooming
Newmarket’s famous flower
shop, Tolly’s, has moved to larger
premises... just opposite!
Founded 15 years ago, Tolly
Considine, has been bringing
beautiful blooms to the town and
surrounding area ever since. Tolly
opened his first shop on Rous
Road in 2002 but last month
has moved across the road into a
much larger 4-storey townhouse
which was previously the
Newmarket Gallery. “Business
has been on the up for quite
some time now and although I
wasn’t actively looking for new
premises, we had outgrown
where we were. I was really
excited about the opportunity of
acquiring the gallery opposite as
it has such a great shop window
which is going to be great for
showcasing what we have,” Tolly
tells us, just a few days on from
the opening. Be sure to pop in
and take a look for yourself!
Creating Your Ideal Space
Many blog posts and articles focus
on current trends, forthcoming
trends and even past trends, and
as much as these are very useful,
sometimes, they it can be tricky to
execute these in our own spaces.
For example, this year’s ‘on trend’
colour chosen by Pantone is
greenery green. This is fantastic
if you’re into green, but what if
you’re not? Instead of focusing on
trends and what’s hot right now, try
focusing on how to create a space
that’s right for you.
Cambridge-based Interior designer, Katie Malik,
talks to us about making your home your own
SUIT YOURSELF
What does it mean to design a space that
suits you? In simple terms, it means to
create somewhere that you feel good and
somewhere that reflects your lifestyle
on every possible level. Our home, both
the location and physical building itself,
influences almost every aspect of our lives
- from how we cook, how we eat, how we
sleep, how often we see friends and even
how safe and secure we feel.
There are some basic principles that help
us maintain wellbeing in spaces we inhabit;
I won’t get in to too much detail about
these now, but they include having a small
front garden and a back garden, having
at least zones if we live in open spaces,
but ideally individual spaces for different
activities to take place, having dining
rooms joined with kitchens rather then
living rooms, proper heating, proper
noise reduction materials, maximum
daylight in addition to self-controlled
lighting for different tasks, and a variety
of plant species.
Photovisions
PERSONAL PREFERENCE
So, what are the steps to creating
that ideal space? With clients
who contact me and ask for help
with designing their spaces, I
always conduct a ‘brief’. It’s the
most important step in getting
the design right. This can be used
when trying to achieve that ideal
space you can do on your own.
First and foremost, decide on the
scope. What is it that you’re trying
to achieve? What do you need
BE INSPIRED
What can help you in the process of
achieving that ideal space for yourself
is creating some form of scrapbook,
ideabook or a Pinterest board where you
can gather inspirational photos and almost
filter what you like and dislike. One tip
here is to try not to recreate the room to
the smallest detail, every space is different
and what might work in one place, might
not necessarily work in the other.
You can see an example of a beautiful
headboard which was upholstered in a very
strong coloured fabric. It all looks beautiful
and you might like the overall ‘look’ but for
example, you could not fall asleep easily in
a bedroom with lots of red hues.
Maybe, you need more softer colours to
feel relaxed in your bedroom like in the
one below, which we created for a family
home in Cambridge.
You might even consider whether you’d
like a headboard in your bedroom. I am in
favour of using them, especially if they’re
upholstered, as they provide extra back
support, especially when reading, and can
take centre stage in any bedroom. One
of my clients, for example, didn’t want to
have one as they simply didn’t like them.
This is down to personal preference and
refers back to my point about creating a
space you like.
tfi
@KatieMalikInteriors
the most in your space? If you’re a family of four,
maybe you need a proper dining table where all
the family can sit down and have a meal together,
but maybe you just need a breakfast bar, as you
all have meals at different times? In one of my
projects, a family needed both; a breakfast bar
for quick meals and a dining table not too far
from the kitchen for evening meals.
A different client of mine wanted to have a
proper table close to the kitchen (also because
of the limited space available), which could
accommodate 3-4 people at the same time.
DARE TO BE
Fancy something a little bit different to liven up your interiors?
Then Mineheart might be just the place for you
DIFFERENT
Set up in 2010 by husband and wife
Brendan Young and Vanessa Battaglia,
the company offers unique twists on
classic designs and comes up with its own
eye-catching pieces from scratch. But a
word of warning – just don’t call their work
‘quirky’.
“I really dislike that word – everyone
always says that!” laughed Brendan. “We
just have fun and make things we like.” He
explained: “Vanessa and I are both from
a product design background so we share
the creative side of what we do.
“I tend to do more of the threedimensional
product development, like
lighting and furniture, and Vanessa takes
over more of the styling and photoshoots,
imagery and packaging side of things.”
The couple live in Cambridge and sell their
products from their base in Sawtry and
online. They have a three-year-old son,
Antoni, and a dog called Lili.
Mineheart’s latest product is a quirk... I
mean, an appealing series of old-style
portraits with pencils superimposed on the
upper lips of the people depicted. This was
achieved by taking photos of Renaissance
portraits and then altering them using a
computer.
“A lot of our pieces are inspired by the
past, such as Baroque and Renaissance
art and architecture,” said Brendan, who
is Cambridge born-and-bred. “I was
reading a psychology book and some of
the tests they did were asking people the
same questions with a pencil under their
nose and without it, and then asking them
how they felt. It made quite a significant
difference to the answers they gave. They
were happier using their facial muscles
as, by smiling and doing certain facial
expressions, you can actually feel happier
Article by Adrian Peel
“I really dislike that
word – everyone
always says that!
We just have fun and
make things we like.”
– so I thought I’d apply that to an old
masterpiece.”
Before Mineheart, Brendan and Vanessa
– who met in 2000 at Exeter University,
where he was studying and where she
was enrolled on a three-month exchange
programme – were design consultants for
companies including John Lewis and Next
Homes.
“That was always to their brief, their
style and their type of customer, and we
wanted to do something closer to us,” said
Brendan. “So the idea of Mineheart was
purely whatever we fancied doing or what
we thought was a good idea.” The name
was inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 46,
“Mine eye and heart are at a mortal war”
to symbolise their dual passions: love for
tradition and eye for contemporary design.
So what are they up to at the moment?
“We are working on several new collections
right now, including a new collaboration
with London-based artist Jacky Tsai which
will be released later in the year,” said
Brendan. “He uses intricate traditional
decorative techniques with a modern
twist. “We are also aiming our new
product designs more for use in hotels and
restaurants, rather than just for homes, in
order to better serve our interior designer
clients.”
Some of Mineheart’s designs are being
exhibited at present at Art of Float, the
studio on Hawthorne Way in Cambridge
where people pay up to £55 to spend an
hour floating in a highly dense saltwater
solution in state-of-the-art floatation
pods. “They’ve got some of our stuff in
there,” confirmed Brendan. “It’s quite
a nice local business which is doing
something interesting. We’ve got lots of
similar options coming up this year but I
don’t know exactly what we’re doing yet.”
Most of Mineheart’s products are
designed, made and assembled in the
UK, which enables more control over
production and quality, giving greater
flexibility and the ability to offer custommade
and bespoke pieces.
A Digital Discovery
Test drive of the latest
Land Rover
Official Opening
Of Marshall’s new Jaguar
and Land Rover site

Motoring
A Digital
DISCOVERY
Land Rover has worked hard to shed almost half a tonne of
weight from the Discovery, but at 2.2 tonnes it’s still a hefty
beast. Hefty enough that, should you accidentally run over the
removable luggage cover that you’ve carefully laid down, there’s
only ever going to be one winner, which explains why there’s
a pile of broken plastic in the back of my test car. Sorry Land
Rover.
However, such is the perceived strength of the new Discovery,
it feels likely that anything that stands in front of it will simply
be beaten into submission. This was put to the test at Eastnor
Castle, Land Rover’s expansive off-road facility that is home to
their customer driving experience. Rock crawls that would defeat
almost anything on the road, deep water well beyond the bottom
of the door, and bumps that twisted the suspension to extreme
angles proved inconsequential to the new Discovery, but it’s
what’s going on underneath the skin that’s impressive.
Casually labelled as the ‘digital’ Discovery, the new car eschews
much of the hewn-from-granite styling of the old Discovery
and bins most of the somewhat
“You’re cocooned
in a cabin that’s
so luxurious that
you barely notice
the outside world
passing by.”
archaic technology that
underpins it, replacing it all with
cutting edge computing power.
It’s immediately apparent as we
venture off-road; the rotary
dial that controls drive modes is
ultimately redundant - while it’s
possible to manually select sand,
snow, mud and ruts, and
so on, setting the car up for what
lies ahead, the car is also able to operate automatically with the
Terrain Response system switching between modes in the blink
of an eye. Simply put, the car knows the terrain better than the
driver.
There are myriad aids to help further, with the equivalent of an
off-road cruise control setting allowing the Discovery to make its
way across tricky terrain at a precisely controlled crawling pace. It
Written by Phil Huff
makes the driver feel invincible, requiring them to do nothing but
steer the car. It is genuinely incredible.
However, for all of its ability off-road, most will stay very much
on smoothly tarmacked roads. It’s here that it shows its bulk, as
anything that weighs roughly the same as a rhinoceros isn’t going
to feel particularly agile on twisty country roads. The Discovery
has a good stab at it though, with the electronic air suspension
hunkering down at speed. Grip levels are surprisingly high thanks
to tyres as wide as you’d find on a Chevrolet Camaro, but body
roll is quite significant and it takes some time to scrub off speed
so confidence levels are unlikely to be as high as the car’s abilities.
Find a straight road and it’s glorious, that air suspension
smoothing out almost every bump despite 21-inch wheels,
with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine propelling the behemoth
to 60mph in just 7.7 seconds. It never actually feels that quick
though, which could be down to a seldomly enthusiastic gearbox,
or it might be that you’re cocooned in a cabin that’s so luxurious
that you barely notice the outside world passing by.
A 10-inch touchscreen dominates the centre stack, and that’s
enabled Land Rover to minimise buttons on the dashboard.
It’s got all the necessary connectivity, including a built-in wi-fi
system that can support six devices in the
car - coincidentally the same number of
seats, if you exclude the driver. There’s
also nine USB ports dotted around, so
everybody’s phone can stay fully charged.
Pleasingly, there are still knobs for
temperature and audio volume, so the
basics can be carried out by feel alone.
It’s all surrounded by plenty of leather,
metal and high-gloss plastics, with acres
of room for each person on board. Even
the pop-up sixth and seventh seats
can accommodate an adult, although
that would count as cruel and unusual
punishment on a long journey. Those rear
seats, and the second row in the middle, all
fold up and down at the touch of a button,
while an app allows you to perform the task
while away from the car. Perhaps that’s
helpful at Ikea.
Despite seven seats, there’s even a decent
boot, along with storage bins and pockets
dotted around the car. There’s one hidden
under the central cupholders that could
hide enough Haribo to keep six kids
happy for days, and there’s even a small
cubbyhole hidden behind the air-con
controls.
Spacious, well equipped, capable on-road
and unstoppable off-road, it’s tough to
find fault with the Discovery. The big V6
diesel engine is barely any more powerful
than the lighter 2.0-litre unit, losing just
0.3 seconds in the 0-60mph sprint,
but the extra refinement alone might be
worth the relatively small £1,500 uplift
in price, and while it’s an attractive car
I’m not convinced that the Range Rover
Sport-esque styling works as well as the
clean-cut utilitarian style of old. And don’t
mention that offset rear number plate.
There’s also the small issue with it being
north of £60,000 for this spec (and more
than £75,000 with the options fitted to it)
but PCP payments are likely to be around
£500 a month, which would make that
more palatable.
Think of it as a mini-Range Rover, albeit
still a physically massive car, with all the
abilities and more of the Discovery of old,
and it starts to look like pretty good value.
Motoring
Spring Is In The Air
Spring is here and there are lots of reasons for thinking about changing
your car says Newmarket Motor Company
With summer looming and the sun shining,
perhaps now is the time to perhaps be
considering a sportscar. Or, if you’re
planning a family holiday such as camping
or caravanning, having the right vehicle
will make such a difference to the whole
experience.
Thankfully there are a wide range of used
cars which are available to suit most budgets
and offering the style and capabilities you
need. At Newmarket Motor Company,
we have an extensive range of vehicles for
sale including sportscars, 4x4s, coupes and
saloons. In addition, we also have a range of
commercial vehicles such as vans, so if your
dream is to convert a van into a camper
van, we can find you exactly what you are
looking for.
If you are thinking of buying a caravan, or
you already have a caravan, we sell various
cars and 4x4s which will make towing easier
and safer. From Range Rovers, Honda
CRVs, Land Rover Discoveries to estate
cars and saloon cars suitable for towing, we
can help find exactly what you need.
There is also the simplicity of open car
motoring which can be enjoyed when
the weather permits! Here in the UK, it
pays to be an optimist when it comes to
the weather, but modern sportscars are
very civilised places to be with the top
up or down. In reality, there are many
opportunities to have the roof down even
in the winter and an electric operated roof
means a speedy roof up should the weather
change unexpectedly.
Sportscars are often very good value
having had extensive development by the
manufacturer to ensure excellent road
handling and offer a truly exceptional driving
experience not to mention just good old
fashioned fun. So, if you are considering a
sportscar come and take a look at our range
of sportscars such as Porsches, Mercedes-
Benz models, Hondas and more exotic
machinery like the Nissan GTR.
Whether you fancy a sportscar, or a car for
the family, now is a great time for change.
Our dedicated and knowledgeable team
can help to make it happen. We offer a
no-obligation free service and there is no
pressure to take out any finance. Whatever
you are looking for, we will do our best to
assist you and make the process as smooth
and painless as possible.
