What is your job and how long have you worked with Yokota FSS?
Assistant/Chief for the Airman & Family Services Flight. I have
worked for 374 FSS for one year and five months.
Since joining FSS, what has been your most rewarding experience?
My most rewarding experience since joining FSS has been working
for the Airman & Family Services Flight. Watching the children at
the CDC’s, Youth Center and SAC brings our mission full circle for
me. Protecting our families is our number one priority. It warms
my heart to have a role in supporting the children and families of
Yokota Air Base.
What was your first or most interesting job experience?
My most interesting job experience was working as a camp
counselor for incoming freshman at my alma mater, Tennessee
State University. It’s amazing the effect we have to influence others’
lives. Working with those young men and women made me realize
the significance in mentorship. Even here at Yokota, people inspire
me to always try to “pay it forward;” and respond to receiving
kindness by being kind to others.

What is your job and how long have you worked with Yokota FSS?
I am a barista at Rickenbacker’s. I began working with Yokota FSS
in September 2016.
Since joining FSS, what has been your most rewarding experience?
Meeting new customers and working with amazing people.
What was your first or most interesting job experience?
Learning how to make different types of coffee drinks.
What got you into your career field?
I wanted to learn how to make a variety of coffee drinks, as well as
meet new people every day.
What are your hobbies?
Traveling around Japan.
What is something you’ve always wanted to try?
Skydiving, bungee jumping and surfing.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and
Tsunami brought enormous damage to the
Tohoku District on 11 March, 2011. More
than six years later, volunteer work has shifted
from emergency-relief to reconstruction

work of removing debris and cleaning up
side ditches, the reconstruction assistance
involves revitalizing the fishing industry and

Moms
Military
Just like any other working mom, it can be difficult
balancing workload with at home duties. But as
a parent in the military, many experience long
duty hours, TDY’s and deployments where they
may be away from their children for an extended
period of time. This can weigh heavy on them,
but they are proud to be able to serve and to be
outstanding moms at the same time.
We talked with a few resilient and hard working
moms about their experience being in the military
and being a parent, how they balance it all and the
hardships they may face day-to-day.
SSgt Ronelda Charles spoke candidly with us
about being separated from daughter, Amaya,
during a six month deployment, “As a single
parent, entrusting someone else with the
responsibility of taking care of your child the way
you would is very hard to do. It’s also difficult for a
young child to understand that you’re not leaving
them forever.”
SSgt Charles faced adversity being away from
Amaya, but she found comfort and inspiration in
other military moms while deployed, “While I was
away, I missed out on precious first moments and
seeing my daughter grow. However, I was blessed
to share my [deployment] experience with other
moms. We motivated each other every day. And
being able to see and talk to my daughter over
FaceTime really helped with missing her.”
Transitioning after a deployment can be very
challenging for both parents and children. SSgt
Charles says the transitionary period for her and
Amiya was rough, but she was overwhelmed with
joy to be able to see her daughter again and spend
quality time, “When I came back, it was difficult
for my daughter to adjust because she was scared
I would leave again. The hardest part for me was
to see just how much I missed while I was gone.
When I left she was drinking bottles and when I
returned she was eating food with a spoon. I had
to learn her all over again. But just being home
with her makes everything worth it.”
Another military mom, Maj Dominique Haig
spoke with us about the challenges parents in the
military face, but also told us about the wonderful
support she has here at Yokota, “The hardest
part is both [my husband] and I are flyers, so we
have long hours and it can be difficult to be able
to spend quality time with our son like we would
want to. However, we are fortunate to have great
leadership and resources. We love the CDC, he is
so well taken care of there.”
SSgt Quinn Tillman, a Med Tech with Family
Advocacy, expressed that while being a mom can
be hard, there is nothing more rewarding than
the unconditional love she receives from her son.
“Seeing his face every day brings light to my life. I
love to see how excited he is to see me when I pick
him up from the CDC,” SSgt Tillman said.

Leap into Summer with
YOUTH ALL STAR SPORTS
FOOTBALL League
Youth Programs (YP) has been selected by
Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) to be
the recipient of a $2,000 grant, sponsored by
Buffalo Wild Wings. The grant will go towards
the implementation of YP ALL STAR Sports
Programs including flag football.
Starting 5 June, YP will kick off an eight-week
summer football program designed to teach the
fundamentals of catching, throwing, running and
creating a healthy lifestyle. Open to ages 5 through
18, the grant-funded summer football program
will offer Yokota’s youth an opportunity to learn
from six trained coaches during weekly practices
and games. A minimum of 100 participants are
needed to fulfill the grant’s requirements and
advance registration is highly recommended.
“Thanks to Buffalo Wild Wings and Boys & Girls
Club of America, this grant will help keep our
kids actively engaged in physically and mentally
positive activities during the summer months.
Most importantly, the kids will learn useful health
tips they can use for the rest of their lives,” said
William “Billy” Richardson, sports director.
Additionally, BGCA will provide 100 flag football
jerseys, 50 flag belts, scoreboards, Coaches
Training Program access and unlimited technical
assistance to ensure the summer program’s
success. “This is the first time Youth Programs
ever received a grant of this size and we are so
excited to host this inaugural summer sports
program for our youth,” said Richardson.

Cultural Connection

Begin the day at Manns Winery in Yamanashi Prefecture, a
town draped with grape vineyards ripe and ready for harvesting.
Here, you will tour and taste 20 Japanese red and white pristine
wines. This historical tour also takes you to the burial place of
Takeda Shingen, a great daimyo warrior who died on his journey
to Kyoto in 1572 where he was destined to be a shogun, a great
military commander. This temple is also noted for its exquisite
Japanese garden created by Muso Kokushi, the high priest of
the Samurai Age. Next, we will visit Shosenkyo Gorge, one of
Japan’s most beautiful gorges. Shosenkyo is part of the Chichibu-
Tama-Kai National Park, which covers more than 483 square
miles of forested mountains, valleys and some rural towns in the
prefectures of Yamanashi, Saitama, Nagano and Tokyo. A hiking
road along the Arakawa River from the Nagatoro Bridge to a
awe-inspiring waterfall offers beautiful scenery of the mountain
river and the narrow valley. The upper section of the path is
about an eighth of a mile in length and leads to the Shosenkyo
Ropeway terminal with some of the most spectacular views
of the gorge, including the 100 feet high Sengataki waterfall.
This ropeway provides access to an observation point with
breathtaking panoramic views of the Southern Japanese Alps and
mystical Mount Fuji.

Hakone Art Museum opened in 1969 as the
first open-air art museum in Japan. View over

Mountain flying opens up new opportunities for general
aviation pilots to visit unique and interesting destinations
with a view of spectacular scenery. However, mountain
flying, even more so than flight in the flatlands, is very
unforgiving of poor training and planning. There is a
narrow window of safety that an untrained pilot can easily
stray out of without the experience and knowledge gained
from a recognized training program and a mountain

While at camp youth will have an opportunity to experience
some of the following:
• Launch on a complex simulated mission to the
International Space Station.
• Space suit theory and design, space physiology and
scuba spacewalk training.
• Take-off and landing, navigational training, aerial
combat missions, centrifuge simulator, flight
physiology and basic aircraft design and much more!
Teen Aviation Camp
23-30 Jun • USAF Academy • Colorado Springs, CO

Teens will experience flying in a Cessna 145, team building
activities, ropes course, Aero Lab and more. Eligible
applicants must be entering their Freshman or Sophomore
year of high school in the fall of 2017.
For both Space Camp and Teen Aviation, lodging, meals,
and program costs are centrally funded and at no cost to
participants or their installations. Transportation costs, to
each camp, are the responsibility of the attendees or their
installation.
