2 2017 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE

Welcome
WELCOME TO SHELDON, WHERE FAMILIES COME FIRST!
Each year at this time, I have the wonderful opportunity to
write a welcome letter for the annual Sheldon Community Guide.
Whether my letter is to a lifetime resident,
a welcomed new resident or maybe you are
checking us out, I sincerely welcome you to
the City of Sheldon!
Here in Sheldon, we continue to flourish
on our rich history, remaining focused on
our plans for today and dreaming of what
we can become in the future. Our industrial
parks continue to fill and are nearing Meendering
Katricia
SHELDON MAYOR
their capacity. This keeps us focused on the
future of Sheldon, forecasting where we might grow.
The new Crossroads Pavilion event center is one of those dreams
that I personally have witnessed its full process. From a concept, an
idea many years ago, to discussions in goal-planning sessions, to
plans drawn on paper to the reality of seeing it being constructed
with a grand opening this summer.
The Sheldon Crossings area was a vision, many years ago, of what
this field could become. It’s exciting to see these visions become a
reality and continue to be a part of Sheldon’s bright future.
Today, I invite you to get out and about! Enjoy a walk, stroll or ride
on our scenic trails or through the picturesque neighborhoods.
Take some time to stop and notice our historic points of interest.
Check out what is happening and help us as we envision what
tomorrow could be.
I’m proud to call Sheldon home. It’s my goal to share in that
excitement, taking pride in our city, volunteering, making a difference
in any way that we personally can. Whether it is picking up
that small piece of trash along your walk, volunteering at a community/church/school
event, participating in celebrations, speaking
positively about our great city, shopping locally; every little deed
adds up and pulls our community together.
When we pull together we are unified. When we are unified, we
are family.
What is “family?” Family is a group of people unified by certain
convictions or a common affiliation.
Come join our family, our City of Sheldon!
Mayor Katricia Meendering
one life at a time.”
2017 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE 9

SCDC
LETTER FROM
CURT STROUTH
Welcome to Sheldon, where
our motto is “Where Families
Come First”!
Our ongoing mission is to
promote Sheldon by developing
an atmosphere where all
people want to come to visit,
live, and conduct business. We
certainly hope that while visiting
our community you will
have the opportunity to experience
our mission firsthand
through our diverse business
base, available amenities and
high quality of life. While you
are here, we strongly encourage
you to patronize our
member businesses, to shop
and dine locally, and help us
continue in building success
for our community!
As a community, we were
very blessed in a number of
ways over the past year. We
experienced the opening of
a number of new businesses,
the expansion of many additional
existing businesses,
the completion of a new
multi-sports complex and the
continued development in
our development parks. All of
this is great to see, as it shows
continued investment into
our community. As we strive to
carry out our motto of “Where
Families Come First” in all that
we do, it was great to see that
two of the major projects in
2016 were both centered on
family and both will have a
lasting legacy on our community.
Lary Rosenboom began a
small family-owned business
in Sheldon way back in 1974,
and on June 23, 2016, we celebrated
a groundbreaking ceremony,
signifying his eighth
and largest, local Rosenboom
Machine and Tool expansion
in Sheldon. This project was to
the tune of $16 million dollars
that includes a 46,000-squarefoot
manufacturing production
line. This specific project
is expected to create up to 54
new jobs within three years,
many of which will be high
quality jobs, adding to their
current employee base of 260.
The average wage for these
new jobs will be $40,800 a year,
and the new annual payroll
created after 24 months is estimated
to be $1.8 million dollars.
In all, this project will also
go down as one of the largest
expansions in the history of
Sheldon. Existing business
expansion and job growth is
the heart of any local economy
and in fact, it is estimated that
upwards of 80 percent of community
growth comes from
within your own community.
This project is a prime example
of how internal growth
can and ultimately will have a
huge impact on the economic
growth of a community.
Just a week prior to this
significant groundbreaking
ceremony, we held the ground
breaking ceremony for Crossroads
Pavilion regional event
center. As we concluded 2015,
we speculated how the event
center project would evolve
in 2016, and now as we reflect
back a year later, we are set for
substantial completion of the
facility on Sept. 1! This facility
will improve the overall quality
of life in Sheldon and also
provide an exceptional added
amenity for our business community
as well as the families
who live and work here.
As a community, local leaders
continue to strive to meet
the goals of all citizens. There
is a continued effort for economic
and population growth
to expand the services that are
available. At the same time, we
want to continue to take care
of those existing businesses to
help them grow and provide
high-quality services and various
amenities for the current
population base.
Our long-term dreams are
that we continue with the
growth we experience today.
Always improving, expanding
and bettering our city not only
to meet the needs of today
but for future generations to
come. It is also important for
us to respect our history and
preserve what we were founded
upon as we grow into the
future.
At the Sheldon Chamber and
Development Corporation,
our friendly staff will do all we
can to make your visit or relocation
a positive experience
and one to remember. Please
feel free to call, write, fax or
e-mail us to learn more about
our community, to request
more information or to ask for
assistance. Information on our
city/chamber website, www.
cityofsheldon.com, is updated
CURT STROUTH
on a regular basis in order to
provide accurate, timely information
to all.
I want to thank you for making
Sheldon a part of your day
today, and our community
hopes that you will take a piece
of Sheldon with you no matter
where you go from here.
YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX
The Sheldon youth sports complex is in
its second year of use.
The complex is a dream that came to
life, as the city of Sheldon and the Sheldon
School District teamed up to build
the fields along Highway 18 next to the
Sheldon Middle School and Sheldon High
School. It’s a $1.2 million dollar complex
with baseball and softball fields and a
green space that can be utilized for soccer,
football and other activities.
The city and school district split the cost
for the fields and also teamed up to pay
for maintenance. For their shared efforts,
Sheldon was named a 2015 All-Star Community
by the Iowa League of Cities for
creating the complex.
The fields were given a symbolic opening
last spring, when the city and school
district played a softball game on June 13.
The school folks won 5-2 in a competitive
contest viewed by scores of fans.
All summer, the fields were used by local
youth teams who practiced and played on
the diamonds. Soccer games and football
practices were held there as well, as the
joyous voices of kids at play echoed across
Sheldon.
CROSSROADS PAVILION
AND COMMUNITY PARK
A gleaming new event center is rising in
the east in Sheldon.
Crossroads Pavilion is being built near
the Sheldon Crossing housing development
in an area adjacent to the borrow pit
pond. The $5.3 million city-owned facility
is scheduled to open this summer.
It will host business conferences, weddings,
concerts and a variety of other
events. The name Crossroads Pavilion
was formed after the city held a contest to
select a title for the center.
From inside the pavilion, the pond will
provide a pastoral view. In the near future,
a large community park will surround it.
Mike Bell, a landscape architect for RDG
Planning and Design in Des Moines, who
helped design the facility with input from
local residents, said the pavilion will serve
as a “porchlight” for Sheldon, welcoming
people to town and attracting interest
from motorists on the two highways that
YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX
CROSSROADS PAVILION AND COMMUNITY PARK
pass nearby.
The park will become the city’s front
lawn, Bell said, a large green space where
people can picnic or play, dogs can run
and events can be staged.
Mayor Tricia Meendering said she has
been visiting the pavilion area on a weekly
basis for several months, watching it
grow from an area wild with weeds into
the home of an event center that will
be a community gem for years to come.
Meendering snaps photos during her
visits, documenting the changing face of a
corner of Sheldon.
RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES
Sheldon has a variety of indoor and outdoor
recreational opportunities to keep
you and your family busy all year round.
SHELDON CITY PARK
Located along Highway 18 in the center
of the community, the park features two
softball diamonds, two shelter houses,
a sand volleyball court and Playground
Paradise — a large wooden playground
constructed by scores of community
volunteers in 1993. Playground Paradise
has areas geared to younger and older
children, slides of all sizes, a puppet theatre
and many other aspects. A skate park
for skateboarders and inline skaters was
completed in 2003.
HILLS PARK
Tucked away in the northwest corner
of town along Highway 60, Hills Park is a
beautiful spot to camp or have a picnic.
The park is located adjacent to the Floyd
River and offers views of the countryside.
Hills Park offers a new 9-hole disc golf
course that winds around the area and
is a popular destination for fans of the
sport. For runners, bikers and walkers, the
Sheldon Recreational Trail begins at Hills
Park and winds around the countryside,
along rows of trees and fields. Relax on a
park bench located less than a mile from
the trail head and see a great view of the
“ALWAYS AT YOUR SERVICE”
Since 1976

Industry
Industry in Sheldon is booming — stimulating
the economy, creating jobs, providing
products for companies throughout
the region and the country. Industry has
always meant progress, and in Sheldon it
means progressing toward a better future
for the city and its residents.
ROME
1427 Western Ave., Sheldon
712-324-5391
rome-ltd.com
Rome Ltd. began in 1977 in Ankeny, providing
service to the oil milling industry.
Over the years and as the company grew, it
had offices in Texas and Florida, however
it always remained to be headquartered in
Iowa.
In 1986, all personnel and equipment
were brought under one roof and relocated
to the company’s current location in
Sheldon.
It also shifted its focus away from oil
milling and morphed into the food
processing industry. The company has
become an industry leader in the manufacturing
of meat grinders — providing
companies with new grinders, new parts
and replacement pieces. The company
has CNC machining technology, an
in-house engineer, in-house tin plating
and other services that set it apart.
waste handling, transportation, agriculture,
military, renewable energy and more.
Rosenboom is still family owned.
Norwesco is a manufacturer of rotationally
molded polyethylene tanks for agricultural,
water, closed-top industrial and
below ground septic and cistern applications.
Norwesco was founded in 1939 in St.
Paul, MN, under the name of Northwest
Plastics Inc. The name was changed in
1973 and at that time, Norwesco was
ranked as one of the oldest and largest
plastic processors in the United States.
The company has locations throughout
the United States, including Sheldon.
The Maintainer Corporation of Iowa
opened in 1976 and is now one of the largest
manufacturers of selling heavy-duty
customized service bodies, service body
cranes and lube bodies.
Their very first body design was called a
BMT (Basic Maintainer Body) and was a
flatbed with a behind cab mounted fixed
boom crane. It was designed to fulfill a
specific customer need to service equipment
in the field.
The company hopes to serve its customers
with superior value in function and
durability.
ROSENBOOM
www.rosenboom.com
Rosenboom was founded in 1974 by Lary
and Viv Rosenboom as a tool and die shop
but today is a leading manufacturer of
custom hydraulic cylinders, both nationally
and internationally.
Their approach starts with collaborative
engineering, and because they do everything
under one roof, they offer greater
efficiency and higher quality control from
start to finish.
All their cylinders are manufactured
using LEAN cellular processes. They use
robotic welding for consistency and integrity,
and each cylinder is then oil tested
and painted to customers’ specifications.
The company serves a variety of industries:
soldiers returned home in October 2005.
n In May 2008, the unit sent several soldiers
to assist with the Parkersburg tornado
tragedy.
Then they worked out of Des Moines and
Burlington to help with flooding in June
and spent time in Louisiana helping after
Hurricane Gustav left devastation in its
LIVE HEALTHY SHELDON
Each January, Sheldon residents buckle
down to give their belt buckles a break.
Live Healthy Sheldon, a 10-week health
challenge, started in 2006 to get people
motivated to lose weight and get fit.
Participants form teams to compete in
either the weight-loss division, activity
minutes division or both.
Weight-loss division team winners are
determined by total percentage weight
loss of the entire team. Activity minutes
team winners are determined based on
the average number of minutes exercised
by members of each team. However, activity
minutes cannot include time spent in a
normal workday.
Prizes are awarded for the winning
teams and individuals in each category.
People 18 and older can join the competition.
College
START HERE — THEN TRANSFER
Northwest Iowa Community College
also offers transfer programs. It makes
sense. Start here by taking the basic core
courses. For two years, you’ll save a lot
of money and stay closer to home; then
you can transfer to a four-year college or
university. Want to be an accountant or a
teacher? Maybe you want to be a human
resource manager, physician, nurse or
own your own business — it’s all within
your reach when you choose NCC.
NCC has many agreements so you can
transfer to a four-year College. Some of
NCC’s partners are:
n Iowa State University and the University
of Iowa both have signed seamless
transfer agreements with NCC. There are
many degrees now available through this
agreement. You will receive an advisor for
both NCC and ISU or U of I to make your
transition as easy as possible.
n Briar Cliff University, Sioux City. This
program allows students to earn a fouryear
degree without leaving the NCC campus:
Business Administration, Human
Resources Management, Accounting and
an online RN to BSN program are some of
the programs offered.
n Northwestern College, Orange City.
This program allows students in designated
two-year Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree
programs at NCC to continue their education
at Northwestern College to earn a
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Elementary
Education, Business Administration
or their RN to BSN program.
n University of Northern Iowa, Cedar
Falls. Through the Admissions Partnership
Program, NCC students who plan
to pursue bachelor’s degrees at UNI will
receive special benefits to help pave the
way for academic success at both schools.
n Buena Vista University, Storm Lake.
This program offers online and on-campus
degree completion programs in:
Accounting, Bachelor of Applied Studies,
Business Administration, Business Economics,
Criminology and Criminal Justice,
Health Services Leadership, Human
Services, Finance and Banking, Management,
Marketing, Organizational Leadership,
Psychology, Wellness Management,
and Public Administration.
n Bellevue University, Bellevue, NE. This
program makes it possible for students to
complete their bachelor’s degree through
Bellevue University the following year
after they complete their associate’s twoyear
degree either online or on a campus.
n Other schools NCC students transfer
to: South Dakota State University, Morningside
College, University of South Dakota
and many more.
THUNDER FRIDAYS
One of the best ways to figure out if a
college is for you is to schedule a campus
visit. Believe us when we say this — we
have years of experience helping students
figure out what to do for the next
step in their educational journey. We see
it over and over again — students figure
out where they “fit” when they come to
campus and see it for themselves. All the
brochures, TV commercials, Twitter feeds
and Facebook pages are great preliminary
research.
HOUSING
Just a short walk from classes, student
housing at Northwest Iowa Community
44 2017 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE

Highway 60 Development
The community of Sheldon was at a
crossroads when the Iowa Department
of Transportation announced it would
bypass the city to build the new Highway
60 expressway.
The community had to make a decision
— embrace the bypass or fear that it
would lead to the eventual disappearance
of downtown Sheldon.
With vision and foresight, the community
chose to look at the bypass as an
opportunity. That attitude allowed an
atmosphere of opportunity to settle in,
and the city has grown.
The Runger Addition was started first
north of Highway 18 and west of Highway
60. The development area, consisting of
mostly commercial businesses, such as
Pizza Ranch, Neal Chase Lumber and a
strip mall that contains Los Tulipanes
and Chinese Chef, has spaces available
for growth. A small light industrial area
remains available for development.
The city then began developing Sheldon
Crossing, a commercial area located south
of Highway 18 and west of Highway 60.
Sheldon Plaza/McDonald’s, Holiday Inn
Express and Taco John’s have located there
so far.
The east side of the Highway 60 expressway
is growing as well.
Crossroads Industrial Park, a heavy
industrial area opened in 2013 on the east
side of the Highway 60 expressway and
south of Highway 18.
The approximately 70-acre development
site welcomed Ziegler Cat, based in
Minneapolis, as the first occupant. The
heavy equipment retailer will also have an
extensive service location.
White Wolf Web, an offset commercial
printing plant, rebuilt in its new location
after a fire destroyed the company’s original
structure in June 2013.
There was a number of other developments
that took place along Highway
60 in 2015. Impressions Salon moved to
FRED’S PLUMBING & HEATING
Crossroads Court, and Oldenkamp Detail
opened a location in Runger Park. Fred’s
Plumbing & Heating opened a location in
2016 in the Sheldon Crossroads Industrial
Park. Crossroads Pavilion event center
and Babcock Meat Company were 2016
additions.
This year, Bomgaars opened a brand
new 32,000-square-foot facility just to the
east of Ziegler Cat.
2017 SHELDON COMMUNITY GUIDE 45

History
SOUNDS OF THE PAST
Off in the distance, you can hear a shrill
whistle of a train as it announces its arrival
in Sheldon.
That same sound was the one that
brought businesses and people to a place
settlers came to call home.
During the past 130 years, Sheldon has
been home to many generations that
have played a part in the city’s growth
and development. Yet, anyone who visits
Sheldon today may find it hard to believe
the community once was occupied solely
by large herds of elk, buffalo and deer.
Throughout most of the 1880s, the land
on which the community stands was prairie.
Actually, much of O’Brien County was
unsettled because it was sitting on a land
zone established by the federal government.
The zone separated Sioux Indians
to the west and Sac and Fox Indians to
the east. Because it was often used as a
battleground and the government troops
who could help were occupied with the
Civil War, most settlers made their homes
on more peaceful land.
With the coming of surveyors, the land
started to look more attractive, especially
as a crossing for the railroad connecting
Omaha to the Twin Cities.
As the tracks neared O’Brien County
in 1871, surveyors platted the city to be
named after Israel Sheldon, a prominent
businessman, adventurer and stockholder
in the railroad.
BUSTLING PRAIRIE TOWN
Not until July 3, 1872, was the prairie
replaced by buildings and houses. And
with construction half finished, settlers
stopped to celebrate Independence Day
on a patch of grass called City Park.
That community spirit guided the new
settlement to become the largest town in
O’Brien County. After just six months, The
Sheldon Mail newspaper was reporting
the history-making events of the town.
And within the next 10 years, a saloon,
lumberyard and hardware store were
serving the people of Sheldon.
Yet, the business that first put Sheldon
on the map was a giant mill that ground
grain into feed and flour, which then was
shipped throughout the prairie nation.
The Prairie Queen Mill was a drawing card
for Sheldon, as the owners built an elevator
and 18 cottages for the employees.
The mill’s influence was most notable in
the monetary value it brought to Sheldon,
bringing in $600,000 within its first year.
Because of the way the mill fueled the
growth of the town, Sheldon acquired the
name Prairie Queen City. Sheldon still
notes its roots with organizations like the
Prairie Queen Kiwanis, Sheldon Prairie
Museum and Prairie Arts Council.
DESTROYED BY FIRE
In the midst of the city’s growth, Sheldon
faced its first major setback in July 1888
when a blaze started in a downtown loft
and traveled through the business district.
Because the wooden structures were built
close together, the fire spread quickly,
wiping out most of the downtown businesses.
The community did not dwell on the
tragedy long. Rather, residents made an
opportunity out of the circumstances
by rebuilding downtown into a popular
shopping area, lined with impressive brick
buildings.
Today, it is easy to see how influential
the events of Sheldon’s history have been
on the city. The downtown continues to
offer a variety of services still housed in
the historic brick buildings. Sheldon also
boasts a variety of restaurants, cultural
activities, entertainment and recreational
opportunities.
The influence of agriculture still is quite
evident as well, particularly in the storage
elevators of Ag Partners that can be spotted
several miles from Sheldon and the
AGP facility that rises high above the trees.
STILL GOING STRONG
As in the past, Sheldon schools continue
to be an important part of the community’s
future. The schools include the public
facilities of the Sheldon Community
School District. Those are complemented
by two private schools, Sheldon Christian
School and St. Patrick’s Catholic School.
Northwest Iowa Community College
also contributes to the community, drawing
students from around the region,
many who later become residents of Sheldon.
Village Northwest Unlimited employs
many Sheldon residents. The Village is a
well-respected facility that serves hundreds
of adults with disabilities. Through
the efforts of the Village, Sheldon also
became known as The Marigold City. The
Village started the community-wide project
to plant thousands of marigolds along
Sheldon’s highways each year for 17 years,
ending in 2007.
In addition to the moniker of The Marigold
City, Sheldon has used the slogans
of “Prairie Queen City” and “Sheldon: A
Really Nice Place.”
In 2007, a Sheldon Marketing Committee
was formed with the purpose of establishing
an identity for Sheldon. The new
brand is “Sheldon: Where Families Come
First,” uniting the community and values
of the city.
Yet, all of the sights and sounds that have
developed in Sheldon, the one sound that
continues to tell the story of the city’s history
is the daily train whistles, announcing
their arrival to Sheldon.
