KATHARINA HARF 

Dear Friends, 

This year marks our 11 th Annual DKMS Gala—an evening where we come 

together with Big Love to celebrate over 25 years of saving lives around 

the world. 

In January, we reached a huge milestone by recruiting our 7 millionth 

potential donor! 

And, through your generosity and advocacy, we have given more than 60,000 

blood cancer patients second chances at life. 

During the Gala, we are honored to present our DKMS Big Love Award to Claudia 

D’Arpizio, Partner at Bain & Company, who lost her husband, Mario, to leukemia 

just four years ago. In his memory, she has dedicated herself to raising funds and 

awareness around registering more donors.

for helping us give hope and life to patients everywhere. 

We are making a difference, but there is so much more to be done. Together, we

MISSION 

DKMS is an international nonprofit organization 

dedicated to eradicating blood cancers like 

leukemia and other blood-related illnesses 

inspiring both men and women around the 

world to register as bone marrow and blood 

stem cell donors. DKMS is providing patients 

with a second chance at life, working closely 

with families from diagnosis to transplant 

and beyond. The donor journey begins 

with a swab of the cheek that takes less than 

60 seconds and can be the action that leads 

to a lifesaving transplant. DKMS, originally 

founded in Germany in 1991 by Dr. Peter Harf, 

has organizations in Poland, Spain, the United 

Kingdom and the United States. The U.S. office 

was started in 2004 and has registered over 

800,000 people. 

Globally, DKMS has registered over 7 million 

potential lifesavers and facilitated more than 

60,000 transplants; however, thousands of 

blood cancer patients are still waiting for 

their lifesaving matches. By raising awareness, 

registering more donors, and advancing 

therapies and research, DKMS supports these 

patients from day one to provide them with 

second chances at life.

inspirational leadership in the fight against

Dear DKMS Supporters, 

Welcome to the 11 th Annual DKMS Big Love Gala. As the Event Chair, I am 

proud to be involved with this inspirational and lifesaving organization. 

Over the past 25 years, DKMS has facilitated more than 60,000 transplants 

and recruited over 7 million potential bone marrow donors around the world. 

We at Coty are celebrating 11 years of partnership with DKMS. 

To date, Coty and our valued business partners have raised $11 million for 

the cause. We have registered 2,000 of our own employees globally, and 34 

of our employees have been matched as potential donors, of which four have 

resulted in bone marrow transplants. 

Together, we can fulfill the mission of DKMS…to delete blood cancer once 

and for all.

Claudia D’Arpizio is a Partner at the Bain & Company Milan office. She is a 

leading member of the firm’s Global Consumer Products and Retail Practices, 

and leads Bain’s Luxury Goods Vertical. 

For over 20 years, Claudia has advised multinational clients, mainly in luxury 

and fashion goods. She has extensively worked on issues relating to corporate 

and business unit strategy, sales and marketing, product and service adjacencies, 

channel and omni-channel strategy, new product development, innovation, 

acquisitions and divestitures, performance improvement and organizational 

changes. 

Claudia is the lead author of the “Worldwide Luxury Market Monitor” developed 

since 1999 in cooperation with Altagamma. This study is periodically updated 

and has become one of the most valued and cited sources of market information 

in the luxury industry. She is also a globally recognized expert in luxury, and, 

in 2009, was named by Consulting Magazine as one of the “Top 25 Consultants 

in the World.”

The DKMS legacy of leadership in the fight against blood cancer began with 

Big Love. The simple yet powerful love for one wife and mother grew into a 

global movement that has touched countless lives. Today, DKMS celebrates 

over 25 years of hope and progress, inspired by the strength of our patients, 

fueled by our amazing donors, and powered by the passion of our employees 

and the generosity of supporters like you. When we join together with 

Big Love, we become an unstoppable force—recruiting donors, changing lives 

and working toward our collective dream—the day when every patient can be 

saved from blood cancer. 

MARLIE WILSON is nine years 

old and loves to play dress up 

and watch videos on YouTube. 

She was diagnosed with Severe 

Aplastic Anemia in 2014, after 

coming home with a bruise 

on her hip from falling on the 

playground. For five months, 

she was on immunosuppressive 

therapy and received blood 

and platelets. She was limited 

in the physical activities she 

could do, and her doctors 

decided it was time to do a 

bone marrow transplant. She 

received it in January 2015 

and has recovered well. Her 

only ongoing procedure is 

phlebotomy treatments, which 

help with increased iron counts. 

Marlie is back to being her lively 

self and loves making videos. 

DANIELLE STEPHENS was 

diagnosed with Acute Myeloid 

Leukemia (AML) and needed 

a bone marrow transplant to 

survive. David Rutherford, who 

had registered years prior at a 

college drive, was found to be 

a match and donated his bone 

marrow. Last December, David 

flew to Dallas and surprised 

Danielle for their first faceto-face 

meeting at the DKMS 

Third Annual Awards Breakfast, 

an event that honors local 

Texas heroes who encourage 

others to join the bone marrow 

donor registry. “When I didn’t 

think I had the strength to 

fight this dreadful disease, I 

got the most wonderful phone 

call that anyone can imagine,” 

recounted Danielle. 



AMANDA SCHAMPER has 

helped to raise awareness of 

DKMS’s lifesaving mission since 

meeting her donor live onstage 

during the 2011 Big Love Gala. 

In 2012, she participated in a 

patient-survivorship video to 

highlight her journey through 

her leukemia diagnosis—she 

was pregnant at the time and 

found out she needed a bone 

marrow transplant four weeks 

after her son was born. Amanda 

became a donor recruitment 

coordinator and has since taken 

on a role to help develop DKMS 

patient resources. In her words, 

“I would not be here today as 

a wife and mother of three 

children if it hadn’t been for my 

bone marrow donor donating 

his stem cells to save my life.” 

QUIANA PARKS is a DJ, 

visual artist, social-influencer, 

philanthropist and cancer 

survivor. Hope is her message, 

and she is now using her 

turntable to bring her call 

to action to fellow cancer 

survivors everywhere. Quiana’s 

commitment comes shining 

through in the group she 

founded, DJ for a Cure, a dynamic 

group of internationally 

known DJs, all dedicated to 

spreading awareness for the 

need for more diverse bone 

marrow donors. Diagnosed with 

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the 

age of nineteen, Quiana uses 

her fight to shed light on the 

need for African Americans and 

Latinos to join the bone marrow 

donor registry. 

KENZA DURANI’s father asked an ER doctor, who was examining her after a fall, to do blood work 

and run a test on her lymph node, which had been swollen due to a cold. This is when Kenza was 

diagnosed with AML. She received two rounds of chemotherapy and reached remission in August 

2016. Following her treatment, the family received amazing news—her father was a half match and 

would be able to donate stem cells. He was to be part of a study to re-engineer his T cells to help 

fight Graft-versus-host disease after the transplant to save her life. By September, she received the 

transplant. Kenza’s story helped raise awareness of the underrepresentation of the Asian population 

on the bone marrow donor registry.

This year again, I wanted to send a personal message that no doubt has a lot to do with the 

experience I have gained as a lawyer since starting out roughly 25 years ago. 

I am very proud to have worked for Coty for all these years, which have done nothing to diminish 

its entrepreneurial spirit or the initiative of its teams that have remained young and dynamic. 

Over a period of as many years as this, staying motivated is essential, but I know that this 

motivation is also made possible by Coty, which constantly sets us challenges and makes us 

always give our best. 

I also wish to say that I sincerely admire the continuous devotion of Katharina Harf and her 

family and convey to them how much I hold them in esteem for having been able to rally as 

many people as they have around such a noble cause. Fate took away from them someone 

who was very dear to their hearts, but they were able to respond to their tragedy in the most 

beautiful of ways, by organizing this ceremony that is at once so authentic and graceful. As is 

the case for everyone, I believe, I readily admit to shedding many a tear each year when a donor 

meets the person they have saved, but they are tears that express the emotion that grips us all 

at that moment, and they simply reflect what a joyous and powerful moment that face-to-face 

meeting is for all of us who witness it. 

So, bravo, carry on in this way for many years to come, and count on us to remain at your side.
