23 rd Medway Pride Day May 20 th
by J.D. O’Gara
It’s May! And for Medway
that means Medway Pride!
The 23 rd Annual Medway
Pride Day, funded entirely by
private donations and run by volunteers,
will take place this year
on Saturday, May 20 th , from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. at Medway Middle
School. The event brings together
residents, organizations and businesses
to celebrate Medway.
“It’s about running into
friends, making new ones, and
having all the fun stuff we expect,”
says Susan Alessandri,
one of the Medway Pride organizers.
Each year, she says, the
group tries to add a new, interesting
attraction to the list of triedand-true
favorite activities on the
stage. This year, they’ve added
the family-friendly Flying High
Frisbee Dogs (flyinghighfrisbeedogs.com),
a K-9 Frisbee act
that has performed for the NFL,
NBA, MLS, Minor League Baseball,
ESPN, “Animal Planet,”
NESN, college halftime sporting
events, fairs, TV commercials
and more, which will take place
at 11:30 a.m.
“Sarah Stone, who’s running
the whole show now, she’s been
really great about keeping the
stuff people love, but adding
something new each year and increasing
the level of engagement
of the community,” says Alessandri.
Alessandri came aboard three
years ago, at the same time as
Stone, to help organize Medway
Pride Day when the event was
threatened to be cancelled a few
years ago. Since then, volunteers
have stepped up, she says, many
of them younger volunteers who
can stay involved for awhile.
As of Local Town Pages’ deadline,
Medway Pride Day scheduled
activities included:
• 10 a.m. Pledge and opening
announcements
• 10:15 a.m. Bike Parade, preK
through fourth grade
• 10:30 a.m. Dale Freeman—he
Duo)
The Bank on Campus
You visit prospective colleges, taking note of what bank is on or near campus.
But why?
Is it ATM access?
That bank may have a machine there, but what about when you’re off campus,
traveling, or home? They charge a fee on top of the ATM fee, all for the privilege of
accessing your money from another bank’s ATM.
But they have “Student Checking.”
Just because they name it after students, doesn’t make it the best option for
students.
There is a better, local option.
Even without “Student” in the name, NB Checking is ideal for those going off
to school. It’s free, pays interest and automatically reimburses every fee at every
ATM in the world; essentially making every ATM your ATM. And no need to visit
a branch with NB Mobile; easily deposit checks, transfer money, earn cash back
rewards and pay bills with your smartphone or tablet.
No 1-800 Numbers.
NB Checking comes with something their “Student Checking” can’t: Needham
Bank. With us, you receive concierge levels of service, regardless of your account
balance. If NB Checking is the right choice for you, it’s easier than you think to
open an account.
Start a conversation with Millis’s personal banker, David Scarcella, at
Medway Resident Urges Congress to
Support Alzheimer’s Research Funding
Adrienne Ross of Medway
joined over 1,300 other advocates
from across the nation in
Washington D.C., at the Alzheimer’s
Association Advocacy
Forum on March 27-29.
In 2008, Osborne’s father was
diagnosed with younger-onset
Alzheimer’s at just 50 years old.
Shortly after his diagnosis, Adrienne
knew she wanted to get
involved with the Alzheimer’s
Association. She joined the Walk
to End Alzheimer’s and has been
an active participant for over 9
years. Three years ago, Osborne
took her commitment further
by joining the Neponset Valley
Walk to End Alzheimer’s planning
committee, this year she sits
as the committee’s co-chair.
Osborne notes that each year,
she looks for more opportunities
to get involved to support
research and care for those impacted
by Alzheimer’s. She heard
of the Association’s Advocacy
forum years ago, but mentioned
she was nervous to attend, “Talking
to members of Congress always
seemed so intimidating to
me. This year, I finally just took
the plunge and registered for the
Forum, and am so glad I did!”
The Alzheimer’s Association
Advocacy Forum seeks to
educate members of Congress
about the impact of Alzheimer’s
disease in the United States. At
the forum, Ross attended seminars
on Alzheimer policy issues,
networked with advocates across
the country and had the opportunity
to share her personal story
on Capitol Hill with local members
of Congress.
“I had the time of my life
and was able to share my personal
story with Congressman
Joe Kennedy, as well as Senator
Markey and several other MA
representatives or their aides,”
said Ross.
According to the Alzheimer’s
Association, more than 5 million
Americans are living with
Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is the
6 th leading cause of death in the
United States and the only disease
in the top 10 that cannot be
prevented, cured or slowed.
“We know that Alzheimer’s
disease remains one of the most
critical public health issues in
America,” said Daniel Zotos,
Director of Public Policy of the
Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New
Hampshire Chapter.
“As we continue to push for
research funding and improvement
in care and treatment, we
need more advocates like Adrienne
to give those impacted by
Alzheimer’s a voice.”
Lasers and the Eye
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Lasers can be very useful in
treating many eye problems. From
helping patients eliminate the
need for glasses to cosmetic procedures
of the eyelids, lasers have
been very valuable in performing
bladeless eye surgery while producing
precise and safe outcomes.
The world of eye surgery was
revolutionized when in 1946, a
German Ophthalmologist used
the first laser to treat the retina.
Laser is light amplified by stimulated
emission of radiation. This
produces photons acting in synchrony,
with high power and precision.
Health risks from the use
of laser pointers
Lasers can be very helpful as
a bladeless surgical device, but a
note of caution: Laser pointers
in hand-held, pen-like devices
that project a beam of laser light
are rapidly replacing the traditional
wooden pointers used by
lecturers during presentations.
However, these pointers can be
misused, for example, by students
in classrooms or by children at
home, and this has generated
safety concerns. There have been
reports of temporary blindness,
disorientation and headaches by
bus drivers, airline pilots, police
and teachers. Manufacturers are
now using similar low powered
laser devices in toys. Never look
at a laser pointer and never point
it at someone. Serious eye injury
(sometimes permanent) can result.
Laser use in Diabetes
In some cases of diabetic eye
disease, small blebs can form on
the blood vessels of the retina.
These can later cause bleeding
and blurry vision. An Argon
Laser can be helpful in treating
these blebs. The same laser can
treat the entire retina in a scatter
fashion when more proliferation
of abnormal blood vessels is
noted.
Laser use in Glaucoma
The laser can be used in a focused
beam of light to treat the
drainage angle of the eye. This
surgery makes it easier for fluid to
flow out of the front part of the
eye, decreasing pressure in the
eye. Two types of laser eye surgery
exist to open up the drainage
angle of the eye: Argon laser
trabeculoplasty and selective
laser trabeculoplasty.
Laser use in after cataract
surgery
The lens capsule is the thin
bag that holds the intraocular
lens implant in position after
cataract surgery. This capsule
becomes clouded in about 25%
of cataract surgery patients. This
causes blurry vision and is also
known as secondary cataract.
A YAG laser can create a small
opening in the center of the
capsule, allowing light to enter
the eye through a central clear
area. The procedure is painless,
requires no anesthesia, and has
very little risk.
Laser use in Laser Vision
Correction
An excimer laser can be used
to correct a variety of refractive
errors of the eye, from nearsightedness
to farsightedness
and astigmatism. This type of
laser is extremely precise. It creates
targeted removal of tissue to
reshape the cornea, which reorients
the light in the correct place
inside the eye.
Laser use in cosmetic eye
lid surgery
Eyelid surgery, also known
as blepharoplasty, is designed
to rejuvenate baggy or droopy
eyelids and to restore youthful
eyes. The laser provides excellent
precision for this procedure.
Since the laser seals small blood
vessels, there is very little bleeding
during surgery. As a result,
bruising and swelling are kept to
a minimum and recovery is fast.
Laser use in Macular
Degeneration
In selected cases of wet
macular degeneration, a photodynamic
procedure can be helpful:
A laser in combination of
a light- sensitive medicine target
the abnormal bleeding blood
vessels to block them.
Laser use in cataract
surgery
The laser has revolutionized
cataract surgery, allowing for a
completely blade-free procedure.
In addition to producing
precise cuts needed for surgery,
the laser used in bladeless cataract
surgery breaks up and softens
the cloudy cataract so there
is less ultrasound needed to remove
the cataract. Less ultrasound
delivered inside the eye
translates into less energy used
in the eye and clearer corneas,
which in turn help producing
better vision on the first day
after the surgery. The same laser
is able to treat astigmatism during
the cataract procedure, producing
a better chance for being
glasses-free after the surgery.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser
technology to treat a variety of
eye problems. Dr. Kaldawy was
the first to offer bladeless laser
cataract surgery in the area and
among the first in New England.
The top 5 eye hospitals
in the country offer bladeless
femtosecond laser cataract surgery.
We offer the same. We are
proud to bring this technology
locally. Laser technology can
help us take care of your eyes
including no blade laser cataract
surgery. This technology is now
offered in our offices and closer
to home.
tips and answer questions about
good oral hygiene. All students
are under the supervision of their
instructor as they participate in
the screening clinic.
Nutritional information will
be provided about food choices
to those experiencing chewing
problems, dry mouth, medication
interactions, and other concerns.
“More than three-quarters
of older adults in Massachusetts
don’t have dental insurance,” explains
Dr. Donald Pierce, a North
Attleboro dentist and planning
committee co-chair. “Many of
the seniors who attended the free
screening clinic haven’t been to
a dentist in a while, so they have
concerns they want to discuss. At
the screening clinic, we take time
to talk with them and answer
their questions.”
Studies have shown that lack
of oral health care can lead to
serious overall health care risks.
According to the CDC, studies
link oral infections with diabetes,
heart disease, and stroke. Most
oral diseases are preventable.
During the screening participants
can also learn more about
the Elder Dental Program, a
project of the Community VNA
which helps low income seniors
to access local dental services
provided at reduced fees based
on a sliding scale.
The Free Dental Screening
clinic has been underwritten by a
grant from the Attleboro Rotary
Club and is funded in part by a
grant from Bristol Elder Services,
Inc. through contracts with the
Massachusetts Executive Office
of Elder Affairs and by a grant
from United Way of Greater
Say No to Lice – without Harsh Chemicals
As if contracting lice weren’t
bad enough, sufferers are often
worried about the toxicity of
chemical treatment, not to mention
the stigma associated with
having lice and their nits.
Brenda Howard, owner of
Lice Clinics Medway, can ease
those concerns. Howard takes
care of lice in a quick, safe,
chemical-free procedure using a
new FDA certified lice treatment
device.
“Lice are everywhere, getting
lice is not related to the cleanliness
of the person or his or her
environment. Lice don’t harbor
disease but certainly any parent
whose child has contracted these
parasites know a lice infestation
can be unsettling and even
depressing,” explained Brenda
Howard, owner of Lice Clinics
Medway.
One of the common solutions
offered today involve nit picking
(the tedious process of removing
eggs, nymphs, and adults out of
the hair with a super fine tooth
comb, then applying over the
counter products containing pesticides).
This process must often
be repeated several times and
does not always produce eradication,
as lice and their eggs can be
resistant to the chemicals-- And
now a SUPER LOUSE has evolved
with extra thick eggs, completely
resistant to over the counter the
pesticides known as pyrethroids.
And if you miss one egg during
the comb out, the egg will hatch
and the cycle will start again.
“At Lice Clinics of Medway,
we use a new FDA cleared device,
called the Airalle,’ that applies
an evenly distributed stream
of hot, dry air, across the entire
scalp of our clients. This is a
revolutionary option to treating
head lice with pesticides, herbal
lice remedies, suffocation products
or lice combs,” said Howard.
The device dehydrates the
lice eggs, nymphs and adults.
Each treatment takes about 60
minutes, involves no PESTI-
CIDES, so it is safe, efficient
and 100% effective. We guarantee
you will leave our clinic lice
free. Even the SUPER LOUSE
EGGS DIE UNDER THIS TREAT-
MENT. At the conclusion of the
visit, our clients go home with all
natural oil in their hair (covered
by a shower cap). Wash the oil
out of the hair after 30 minutes
(to suffocate any surviving adults)
and problem solved. We give our
clients a checklist on heat treating
clothing, bedding, combs and
brushes too; as such measures
must be implemented to prevent
reinfection.
Walak and Kevin Zheng,
representing Milford Federal
Savings, won 3rd place in the
American Bankers Association
Foundation’s Lights, Camera,
Save! national video contest.
The announcement was made
March 1, 2017 in a video broadcast
via the ABA’s YouTube
channel.
Milford Federal was one
of 125 bank participants who
hosted local levels of the competition
and selected a winner to
represent their bank and compete
on the national level. Matthew
and Kevin’s video, “Mr.
Big Cash Money” features the
importance of saving money for
unexpected expenses and future
goals.
“We are thrilled for Matthew
and Kevin and are proud
to be a part of this major accomplishment,”
said Cynthia
Casey, President & CEO. “The
best way to connect with young
people is through something
they enjoy or can relate to, and
Matthew and Kevin’s video does
just that.”
As the 3rd place winners,
a cash prize of $1,000 will be
awarded by the ABA Foundation
to fund their savings goals. In addition,
an educator from Natick
High School will be awarded a
fall in Washington, DC.
Lights, Camera, Save!
launched in 2010 as an offshoot
of the ABA Foundation’s Teach
Children to Save program. It is
a unique competition that encourages
youth to use video to
communicate the value of saving
and using money wisely to
inspire their peers and others to
become lifelong savers.
Local Fitness Expert Offers Tools to Tackle Stress
By J.D. O’Gara
Stress. Whether it comes from
your job, your relationship, your
health, your financial status, or
family problems, pressures build
on us all and can take their toll on
your health and well-being.
What if you could arm yourself
against those stressors?
Local fitness expert and author,
Jason Shea, the Statewide
Health and Wellness coordinator
for the Municipal Police Training
Committee and owner of APECS
Corp., in Medway, has put together
an easy-to-read, practical
guide that includes steps you can
take to guard your mental and
physical health from the effects
of stress. His most recent book,
Stress Strategies, looks at many
known and unknown causes of
stress, how it affects us both physically
and mentally, and simple
steps we can all take to counter
stress even before it hits.
“It’s like playing a game of
chess against the stresses of life,”
says Shea, a PICP Level IV International
Strength Coach, author,
speaker, and former college
adjunct professor who developed
the book in response to demand
from clients who range from athletes,
SWAT, SpecOps and military
personnel to business execs
and everyday fitness enthusiasts.
“In playing the game of chess, if
stress makes a small move against
us, like moving a pawn up one
space, how big of a countermove
do we need to make? Is it worth
moving the queen to block the attack?”
he asks.
Shea demonstrates how everyone
can build his or her immunity
from stress, condensing over 150
hours of research, from more
than 200 studies, into this easy-toread
guide.
“You can arm yourself with
both physical and mental tools to
protect your body and mind from
the negative effects of stress,” he
says. “With an increase in our
stress burden, smaller, normally
less impactful stresses begin to
take their toll on us.”
The book begins by outlining
what those stressors are, ranging
from both endogenous and exogenous
sources that can be exacerbated
by things including poor
nutrition or lack of sleep. Seemingly
simple factors such as poor
posture, dehydration, or vitamin
or mineral deficiencies can lead
to an increase in the stress hormone,
cortisol, he explains. Stress,
the book explains, is related to the
perception of the demand and
the perceived ability to cope with
that demand.
Part two of the guide examines
how that stress translates into
physical issues.
“What are the symptoms of
stress?” says Shea. “Muscle tightness
and injuries can come from
stress. Stress can decrease flexibility
and circulation, aggravate
Raynaud’s syndrome, affect thermal
regulation and even increase
unsightly visceral fat accumulation,”
he says. Physical and emotional
manifestations range from
irritability and sadness to appetite
changes, dizziness and changes in
hormonal status. What’s more,
factors such as age, gender, obesity,
food, diet and even household
chemicals can affect cortisol levels,
thus affecting the body’s ability to
manage stress.
Finally, the most extensive
part of the book, part three, deals
with strategic solutions, from dietary
changes such as increasing
magnesium, drinking green tea,
supplementing with acetyl-Lcarnitine,
or introducing medicinal
herbs including holy basil and
ashwagandha, to the body as a
part of wider lifestyle changes.
Shea’s book bridges mindaltering
approaches of calm,
innovative, non-dogmatic and optimistic
thinking combined with
decisive action, and interpersonal
connectedness and support, with
building physical stress resistance
through diet and dietary supplements,
balneotherapy (or water
therapy), laughing, massage, progressive
muscle relaxation, improved
posture, exercise training
and light exposure, among others.
“No one ever teaches you
how to create a coat of armor,
both inside and out, to handle
stress,” says Shea. The question,
he says, is not just “do I have the
psychological tools, but do I also
have the physical tools to better
tolerate stress? On one side of
the chess board, you have the top
stressors – money, work, familial
stress, economic worry, relationships,
personal health problems,
housing costs, job stability, health
problems of family members, and
on the other side, you have your
tools for how you handle stress;
what moves you make to react to
specific stressors, and how well
prepared you are to combat those
stresses.”
Stress Strategies is currently
available on Amazon both in paperback
and on Kindle. Shea is
also currently working on Butts,
Guts and Other Problem Areas, Building
a Winning Culture (coming out
this summer), and his second
children’s book, The Adventures of
Little Skadooch, Part II. His local
training facility, APECS Corp.,
is located at 276 Village Street in
Medway. Here they offer training
techniques and educational
tools to optimize athletic performance,
minimize risk of injury,
and decrease stress. You can find
Annual Against the Tide Events
Massachusetts Breast Cancer
Coalition (MBCC) will be holding
its annual, statewide Against
the Tide Swim, Kayak, Walk,
Run and/or Aquathon events
again in 2017. The morning
events consist of several components:
competitive and recreational
swims, recreational
kayak, fitness walk, and USA
Track & Field certified 5K/10K
runs. Participants of all ages and
abilities can choose 1, 2, or 3
of these exciting activities. The
event also offers an Aquathon
“Splash and Dash” component,
where participants “splash” in
the competitive 1-mile swim
and immediately “dash” in 5K
or 10K run (chosen by the participant).
Participants may register
as an individual or as part
of a team. Registration is $40
per adult per event activity and
$25 per student per event activity.
Participants are encouraged
to fundraise beyond these suggested
minimums, as all proceeds
support Massachusetts Breast
Cancer Coalition’s unique goal
towards breast cancer prevention.
Prizes will be awarded to the fastest
athletes and top fundraisers.
Register O’Donnell Promotes
Registry of Deeds Internet
Research
Norfolk County Register of
Deeds William P. O’Donnell is
providing a friendly reminder to
consumers that you don’t have to
spend time and money to drive to
the Registry to view land records
since they are available online via
the Registry’s internet-based document
research system at www.
norfolkdeeds.org.
“Consumers can see up to
6,000,000 scanned land document
images dating back to the
founding of Norfolk County
in 1793. These documents are
available via our internet-based
document research system. We
are bringing the Registry records
into people’s homes and businesses.
“Providing secure, accurate
and accessible land record information,
coupled with our on-site
customer service center, is critical
to our success at the Norfolk
County Registry of Deed,” said
Register O’Donnell, who appeared
March 22 nd as guest
speaker at the Medway Public
Library, providing an overview of
the Registry and such consumer
interests as the Homestead Act.
Elaborating on the Registry’s
research capabilities, O’Donnell
said, “Land record information
can be researched by multiple
options, including the name of
the property owner and property
address. Consumers can
access our internet-based document
research system for many
endeavors such as, to determine
property ownership, to research
land titles, to review land plans
(only plans which are recorded
at the Registry) and finally to
confirm that documents affecting
a person’s property- such as a
mortgage discharges - have been
duly recorded.”
The Registry’s website also
provides information on how to
obtain copies of land documents.
The Registry copy charges are
$1.00 per page, plus an additional
$1.00 per document for
postage.
Ross Backs Measures to Protect Veterans’ Hiring Practices
State Senator Richard Ross
(R-Wrentham) is co-sponsoring
legislation along with Representative
John Velis (D-Westfield)
and Senator Michael Rush
(D-West Roxbury), that would
restore a hiring preference for
veterans in all public safety jobs
in the Commonwealth and ensure
that veterans continue to
be prioritized during such hiring
processes.
“The Civil Service law recognizes
the need to provide preferential
treatment to veterans in
the hiring process. However, if
a town decides to opt out of this
system, it is crucial that there is a
method in place to protect these
experienced and qualified veterans
among the hiring practices
of local police and fire departments,”
said Senator Ross.
A potential unintended consequence
of municipalities opting
out of the Civil Service system
has been veterans no longer receiving
the hiring preference
provided to them under the law.
Without the Civil Service law
giving preference to qualified
veterans, towns may possibly hire
fewer veterans for town public
safety positions. If enacted, this
legislation could elevate any such
concerns.
Please contact the office of
Senator Ross with any questions
or concerns at (617) 722-1555 or
Sports
Optimistic Outlook for Girls Track Team at Millis
By KEN HAMWEY
The Millis High girls outdoor
track team finished 5-1 in dual
meets last year and posted some
top-notch results in the postseason.
Another successful campaign
this spring is very realistic,
because coach Laura Conner has
lots of returnees who’ll provide
depth and experience.
The Mohawks, who finished
fourth at the Tri Valley Meet last
year, have many strengths and
Conner, now in her fourth year
at the helm, is optimistic about
her squad’s prospects.
“We’ve got 40 girls on the roster,
and 20 of them competed
last year,’’ Conner said. “Our
experience and depth are good.
Our strengths are our distance
runners, sprinters and throwers.
We’re also strong in the 4x400
relay, and I like our team chemistry
and our work ethic.’’
Matching last year’s 5-1 record
will be a challenge but Conner,
who was a TVL all-star in
track at Ashland, has a lofty goal
for her Mohawks. “I’d like to see
us compete for the league title,
but it will be a difficult task,’’ she
said. “Holliston is the defending
champion, and Norton and
Hopkinton should be in the mix
for the championship.’’
Millis is off to a .500 start,
defeating Bellingham and losing
to Ashland. While Conner
is bullish on her squad, she’s also
pleased with her senior tri-captains
— Taylor White (hurdles,
high jump), Parousia Cruz (400,
4x400) and Sarah Wenzel (javelin,
shot put, discus). White’s
best time in the 400 hurdles is
1:08.9; Cruz has compiled a best
of 1:00.35 in the 400 and Wenzel’s
personal best in the shot put
is 29-11.
“Our captains are skilled leaders
who are energetic and motivating,’’
Conner said. “Taylor
has good technique and form in
the hurdles and high jump. Parousia
has excellent endurance, is
strong and fast while Sarah relies
on strength and coordination.’’
Three sophomores who’ll play
key roles include Morgan Kane
(100, 200, high jump),
Sara Schildwachter (200,
4x100) and Ciara Moynihan
(400, 4x400). Kane’s personal
best in the 100 is 13.2 seconds;
Schildwachter’s best is a 26.93 in
the 200 and Moynihan’s has run
the 400 in 1:00.10.
“Morgan is one of our hardest
workers, and she’s very focused,’’
Conner said. “Her speed is excellent,
and she’s effective out of
the blocks. Sara has speed and is
a disciplined runner. Quick out
of the blocks, she continues to
improve as she transitions to the
400. Ciara anchors our 4x400
relay. She’s got good form, a long
stride and speed and endurance.’’
Senior Theresa Cerullo has
achieved a personal best of 109-1
in the javelin and she also throws
the discus. “Theresa is tall, strong
and has very good technique and
footwork,’’ Conner noted. “A
hard-worker, she’s improved because
of strength training and
getting off-season coaching.’’
Rounding out Millis’ nucleus
are juniors Julia Krauss (800,
4x400), Katie Malewicz (200,
400, 4x400) and Lucy Clayton
Millis Girls Track Coach Laura Conner has 40 team members on her
roster this year, with half returning from a successful campaign last
year. She has high hopes for this year’s team.
(mile, 800). Krauss’ personal best
in the 800 is 2:30.63; Malewicz
has run the 200 in 26.3 seconds
and her best in the 400 is 1:01
while Clayton’s best time in the
mile is 5:30.
“Julia gives 100 percent in
every meet and she’s very positive,’’
Conner said. “A strong runner,
she’s got good endurance.
Katie is very motivated and loves
to compete. Always focused, she’s
got speed. Lucy is strong, she’s
got endurance and her form is
good. She likes to jump out early
ahead of the pack and maintain
a strong pace.’’
Five of the girls enjoyed success
in post-season events last
year. The 4x400 relay team
(Malewicz, Krauss, Cruz and
Moynihan) captured first place
in the Division 4 State Meet in
a time of 4:07.18 and advanced
to the All State Meet. Cerullo
placed second in the javelin (104-
11) and sixth in the discus, moving
on to the All States and the
Nationals.
When Conner, who also
coaches girls indoor track and
boys and girls cross-country,
worked in Millis as an art teacher,
she was able to recruit candidates.
But, now working as an art
instructor at the Medway Middle
School, her focus to add recruits
is by word-of-mouth.
“I no longer teach at Millis,
but when I was, I asked every
student who wasn’t involved with
a sport to try cross-country or
track,’’ she noted. “Now, the kids
who run for me are doing some
recruiting. They ask their friends
to try out or stress how good it
is to be part of a successful program.
One beautiful aspect of
track is that it offers a chance
to star as individuals while also
helping the team achieve success.’’
A graduate of Fitchburg
State, Conner is working on her
masters at Framingham State in
art education. A miler at Ashland,
she ran her first marathon
this year, competing for the Hale
Reservation in Westwood, an organization
that conducts summer
programs and camps for underprivileged
children.
Conner’s coaching philosophy
focuses on competing to
win, reaching one’s potential and
enjoying track. “Valuable life
lessons can be learned from athletics,
like setting goals and overcoming
adversity,’’ she noted.
“Working together is a good reallife
lesson and it usually leads to
success.’’
That formula sure has worked
at Millis in spite of the girls running
all their meets at their opponents’
tracks. “Our track is gravel
and not regulation size,’’ Conner
said. “We have no home-court
advantage, and bus rides sometimes
get tiresome. We often
wonder just how good we could
be if we had meets at our own
track and how many fans we’d
attract.’’
No home meets is an adversity
that obviously makes the Millis
girls a close-knit and ultra-determined
track squad.
Sports
Jack Moriarty – Down in the Dirt for Millis Baseball
By Christopher Tremblay
Millis baseball captain Jack
Moriarty is a dirt dog in the true
sense. The senior catcher doesn’t
mind getting his uniform dirty;
in, fact he’d rather prefer it.
The three-sport athlete (baseball,
football and basketball)
began playing baseball like most
at an early age, and although
the diamond is his first love, he
says there is nothing like football.
Catcher became his main
position while playing double A
baseball in Millis (second grade),
and although he has played third
base for the Mohawks, calling
the plays from behind the plate
is where he’d rather be.
“I came in contact with playing
catcher in Double A when we
rotated through the positions,”
Moriarty said. “I just remember
doing whatever I needed to do to
keep that ball in front of me and
not get past me. I fell in love with
the position right there.”
It was here he developed his
dirt dog mentality and his passion
for actual dirt on his uniform.
Moriarty believes first and
foremost no matter what position
you’re playing, you can’t let
the ball get past you.
“Whether I’m playing catcher
of third base I’ll do anything that
I can to knock the ball down and
keep it in front of me,” he said.
Millis Head Coach Mike
Carter agrees.
“On the field, he’s a hard
working individual that’s high
dedicated to getting better. He
doesn’t fear the ball at all and
will use whatever body part he
has to knock the ball down and
keep it in front of him
to make the play,” the
Coach said. “As a coach,
you definitely want to see
your players field the ball
cleanly; Jack’s not perfect
but he gets the job done.
And when you talk about
getting dirty – that’s definitely
him.”
It was around sixth
grade when the Millis
captain realized that
he had what it takes to
play catcher on the high
school team. Playing on a
bigger diamond, he was
one of the only ones who
could make the throw to
second base from behind
the plate. Although he
knew that he could play
the came on a higher
level, he was not exactly
ready for what was to come.
“Playing for the junior varsity
team was a big adjustment;
the game was so much quicker
that what I was used to,” Moriarty
said. “And when I made it
to the varsity team, it was even
quicker.”
As a freshman and sophomore,
Moriarty found himself
behind the plate for the Mohawks
junior varsity team with
an occasional call up to varsity.
Although he only found himself
involved in a handful of games
for the varsity team, he would
have like to play more especially
since his older brother Colin was
a senior at the time.
In his junior season, he found
his way to the varsity squad for
good. Unfortunately, there was
a senior catcher on the team, so
Moriarty found his way to the
infield.
“Jack was our mainstay
catcher on the JV team his freshman
and sophomore years, but
when he got to the varsity team
in his junior year, there was an
established senior catcher in his
way so we put him at third,”
Carter said. “This year, he
should see the majority of his
time behind the plate, but when
you’re looking to put together
the best defense in the field he
may see some time at third. He’ll
be in the starting lineup somewhere,
that you can count
on.”
While his defense is
definitely to notch, Moriarty
struggled at the plate
last spring. According to
Carter, it got to him early
and he just couldn’t adjust.
“I started the season
out ok, but then I hit a
bad slump and never
could get out of it,” Moriarty
said. “I had played
in a good league prior to
my junior year so it wasn’t
like I didn’t know how to
hit. I know I can hit, but
my confidence was just
not there when I got into
that slump and couldn’t
shake it – it became a
mental thing more than
anything else.”
So, with hitting being an issue
last year, the senior captain took
right to the batting cages as soon
as basketball was complete, and
as he enters his final campaign
as a Mohawk, he feels zoned in
and comfortable at the plate.
“Playing behind the plate is
second nature,” he said. “My
goal this year is to get the bat on
the ball and be a consistent hitter
at the plate. As for the team,
I’m looking to be a competitive
team in the Tri Valley League,
especially since last year was
tough.”
If his extra hitting in the offseason
has indeed improved his
batting skills, Moriarty may see
his name higher in the lineup
this season.
“He’s typically been one of
our better doubles guys,” the
coach said. “Last year, he was
hitting down near the bottom
of the lineup, but if he fixed
his swing he’ll be near the top
this year. Jack’s a tough at bat
and doesn’t go down that easy.”
Carter is hoping that his catcher
has improved his batting so that
he can help this team improve in
the Tri Valley League and hopefully
earn a trip to the tournament.
The Snow is the Story
As with most stories, there are
many people understand it as a fact
Franklin Library Invites
Genealogy-minded
Folks to Join the Club
By MarJorie turner ho lMan
The night was bi ter cold, but
for the 20+ folks who showed up
a the Franklin Public Library for
the first m eting of the Genealogy
Club, it was a time to talk
about family co nections and
countries of origin. Many participants
were from Franklin, with a
few from Milford, Norfolk and
Be lingham. The theme of connections
was consistent as each
person explained their interest in
participating in the group.
Linda Batchelder of Franklin
noted that she got interested in
genealogy because of a relative’s
ashes that remain in her a tic.
“His name was Bertul—he died
during the 1918 flu epidemic—
a friend of my grandfather’s,”
Batchelder began. “When my
grandfather was able to return to
Latvia, he wa su posed to take
the ashes wit him, but wasn’t
a lowed to. They’re sti l in our
a tic. We learned that Bertul had
b en our grandfather’s best man
in his we ding and ma ried a
relative of ours.”
Each person had stories to
share of wha they had already
learned in their family research,
and a l had mysteries they hoped
to solve in the future. Vicki Buchanio,
Head of Reference and
Public Services a the Franklin
Public Library told the group, “I
have lots of relations who must
sti l be alive—I’ve never found
the death certificates for them,
even though some of them were
born in 1802, so they must sti l
be alive!”
Among those who a tended
were people with r ots in Finland,
Poland, Germany, and
England, besides several of
Scots-Irish descent. Buchanio
was pleased with the turnout—
she had b en afraid n one would
show up. Buchanio has had a
long-time pa sion for genealogy
A times, we hear news reports
of a beloved parent with
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia,
who has wandered ou the
or other situations where a child
health i sue has an unfortunate
encounter with police officers
who weren’t aware of the child’s
special circumstances and fears.
In these cases, a li tle knowledge
can go a long way.
The Ho liston Police Department
aims to arm itself with
that knowledge and ge to be ter
In January, The Ho liston
Is It Spring, Yet?
Second Annual Ho liston AgCom Family Event
March 22 at Breezy Hi l
By J.d. o’Gara
It’s b en a rea ly long winter.
Members of Ho liston’s Agricultural
Commi t e, or AgCom,
are asking a very logical question
– “Is It Spring, Yet?” with
their Second A nual Family
Event welcoming the season on
Sunday, March 2, from 12-4
p.m., to take place at Br ezy
Hi l Farm, 583 Adams Str et,
Ho liston. As it did last year,
th event wi l feature baby animals
and farm-related fun for
the whole family, and the suggested
family donation, which
wi l su port Ho liston AgCom,
is just $5.
“This is just a fun event for
families in town, because the
town i so su portive of agriculture,”
says Paula Mark, member
of the Agricultural Commi sion
who has lived in Ho liston for
12 years on land, she says, that’s
b en in her husband’s family
for generations. “When we got
this property, it was inevitable
that I was going to turn it into
a farm,” she says, explaining,
with a smile, that her sma l farm
has grown from just chickens to
now, b es, alpacas, a horse and
ra bit. The 4H leader hopes her
place can someday be a place
for “ kids to come to reco nect
to nature and learn how to act
around animals.”
Animals – in fact, animal
families, are sure to be what
Ho liston kids and their own
families are going to s e a the
“Is It Spring Yet?” event. As it
did last year the day i sure to be
“I have b en with Local
as a resident of the town for the
Kyle and Tyler canva sed the
area of Hopedale, Milford, Mendon
to area busine ses that we were
starting the Hopedale paper. They
a cumulated contact information
and then made a pointments
for Lori Ko ler to m et with the
The Li tle White Market Wi l Be Back Be ter than Ever at End of Month
By J.d. o’Gara
Just over six years ago,
Tracey Liberatore had a
vision for the property she
drove by at 5 Depot Str et
in Hopedale just over six
years ago.
“I thought it would
make a cute li tle market,
and we didn’t have anything
like that in Hopedale,”
says the Hopedale
Mom and 21-year-resident
of the town. And if anyone
could turn that li tle
shop into the kitchen of
the community, Tracey
could. She’d worked in
the f od industry since she
was a t en, later partnering
through which Liberatore
began her pa sion for f od
its restaurant, and she later came
back to lead the kitchen, wi ning
the Ma rio t Diamond A sociate
Busy wit her two boys, Liberatore
started slo wit her
new li tle market. Pre ty s on,
she built a su ce sfu luncheon
“I think we have a real home
comfy, like you’re walking into
your grandmother’s
kitchen. It’s cozy, and
there are sme ls (o f od
Liberatore and her
sta f c ok a l of the
dishes right on the premises.
“We do a lot of
homemade soups and
salads, everything from
scratch,” says Liberatore.
“We even roast
our turkeys here, make
meatba ls, and we o fer
di ners, including
chicken Marsala and
b ef stew,” she says.
In fact, Hopedale
residents and local busine
ses have begun to
take advantage of the
catering options, an area
Liberatore is excited to
grow.
“We do a lot of catering,”
due to the complexity of
Do you know wha tests your
child is taking thi spring? One
local residen thinks parents are
uninformed abou the new education
standards and the a companying
tests being considered by the
state of Ma sachuse ts. He hopes
to bring the polarizing i sue to the
forefront at Norfolk Town M eting
and on the town election ballot.
The United States is embarking
on an unprecedented journey
to unify education standards for a l
students in kindergarten through
12th grade. Known as the Common
Core State Standards Initiative,
these standard set common
education benchmarks acro s the
country in order to prepare students
for co lege and the workforce.
The Common Core uses the
Partnership for A se sment of
Readine s for Co lege and Car
ers, or the PAR C exam, to test
how we l students have learned the
new cu riculum. In Ma sachuse ts,
the PAR C exam wi l eventua ly
replace the Ma sachuse ts Comprehensive
A se sment System,
or MCAS test.
Norfolk resident Patrick
Touhey would like to put the
brakes on the PAR C test and
force discu sion of the new standards
and whether or not the
Norfolk and King Philip sch ols
should implemen them. Touhey
wi l be placing an article on the
Norfolk Town M eting wa rant
to remove Common Core and
PAR C testing from the sch ols
in a non-binding vote. He is also
a tempting to get enough signatures
to place the question on the
ba lot for the town election this
spring.
Touhey hopes these actions
wi l send a me sage to local sch ol
commi t es and the State Department
of Education: “We don’t
agr e with the PAR C testing and
Common Core cu riculum.” He
wants the local sch ols to return to
the pre-2 09 Ma sachuse ts educational
state standards.
After a tough winter, the
community can l ok forward to
a w ek of nature immersion that
doesn’t involve snow. The King
Philip Science National Honor
Society wi l be hosting naturalist
Brent Nixon during the w ek of
March 17 to 24. Several events
are pla ned for the sch ols and
the tri-town area.
Nixon, a renowned science
educator, has dedicated his life
to endangered species research.
Known for his high energy, interpretive
science shows, Nixon
travels extensively to promote
environmental education. In
a dition to his research work
and publications, Nixon has appeared
on TV, radio, and in print
media.
The Naturalist-in-Residence
w ek was the idea of A n Lambert,
a science teacher at KP
High Sch ol and the advisor for
the sch ol’s Science National
Honor Society. Lambert had
traveled to Alaska on a cruise
and Nixon was the naturalist on
board.
“His pa sion for his work,
knowledge about his topics,
and vivacious, entertaining,
and informational presentation
style was what made me think it
would be a great o portunity for
the KP students and community
if we could bring him here,” said
Lambert.
Lambert believes that when
students actua ly m et scientists
and interact with them, science
becomes interesting and fun.
Nixon’s expertise on wildlife and
field research should prov eyeopening
‘a Place To Turn’
for those in need
By liz taurasi
It’s b en years in the making,
but despite some major roadblocks
an delays, University
Station in Westw od is fina ly
opening for busine s in March.
And with it come some big
name stores the area has b en
waiting for, including Target (set
t open March 4, s e related story
on page 13) and Wegmans, both
of which wi l anchor the complex.
University Station, when
fu ly complete, is expected to
include a proximately 50, 0
square f et of retail and restaurant
space, along with residential
apartments and more.
University Station officia ly
opens for busine s in March as
we l as 16 busine ses, including:
Target, Marsha ls/HomeG ods,
Nordstrom Rack, Sports Authority,
PetSmart, Michaels, ULTA
Beauty, Kay Jewelers, Starbucks,
Smashburger, Famous F otwear,
Fidelity Investments, Dre s Barn,
David’s Bridal, Panera Bread,
and Charming Charlies.
Situated on 120 acres, University
Station, isn’t just going to be
a new sho ping destination, it’s
also a community. The mixeduse
development wi l feature
a blend of retail stores, restaurants,
recreation and residential
housing. The initial residential
component of the project wi l
include Gables residential, which
wi l feature 350 luxury apartment
units, as we l as Bridges
by Epoch, a memory care facility;
both also expected t open
this year. Gables Residential is
projected t open in late spring
2015, a cording to New England
Development officials.
A ditiona ly, University Station
is expected to have up to
350, 0 square f et of o fice
space available.
The project has b en a long
time in the making. In 2 07,
the project was put on hold due
to pla ning and financial i sues.
In 2 08, Wegmans was held up
from coming in after a local state
representative ca led for a home
rule petition to a prove the liquor
license for Wegmans at what was
then known as Westw od Station.
This ha pened just as the
legislature was ready to move
ahead with the a proval. A the
time, some local representatives
were concerned about giving
Wegmans an advantage over
Roche Bros. Both Wegmans and
Roche Bros wer eventua ly able
to secure b er and wine licenses
in the spring of 2012. Westw od
Special Town M eting a proved
the long-awaited project back in
May, 2013. Developers broke
ground on the project six months
later.
University Station is being
developed by New England Development,
along with Eastern
Real Estate and National Development.
“We l ok forward to welcoming
local and area residents to
this new sho ping destination,”
Dougla s Karp, president of New
England Development said in a
formal statement. “University
Station wi l be an exciting new
a dition to Westw od and brings
together a mix of popular stores,
restaurants, housing and more.”
TESTIMONIAL FOR ROBIN & MARK SPANGENBERG:
Testimonial for Robin & Mark Spangenberg: Robin & Mark helped
us sell our home and helped us purchase a new home a few towns
away. Robin was extremely knowledgeable about house values,
neighborhoods, history of sales. Always accessible, helped us
to see houses right away, and was very flexible in scheduling
and timing. Always followed up with all parties. Both Robin and
Mark are extremely honest with a lot of integrity and pride in
their job. There was no hard sells, no oily sales push. They were
very patient and viewed the houses as if they were buying thempointed
out the good and bad. We always felt we could trust their
opinion. Highly recommend!
