My skincare and makeup<br />

workshops are a fascinating mix<br />

of women from different backgrounds<br />

and with different lifestyles. Every<br />

person has unique skin and I am<br />

fascinated to hear about how they<br />

choose their skincare products. Some<br />

have a long-standing loyalty to a<br />

particular brand, some select on price,<br />

and others are swayed by the promises<br />

offered by the advertising. When I ask<br />

“what difference is it making to you?”<br />

the reaction is interesting. Almost<br />

nobody mentions that it has made a<br />

significant, visible difference. A typical<br />

response is “it suits my skin”. When I<br />

dig a bit deeper I find that they often<br />

mean “it doesn’t upset my skin”. Some<br />

are still using the same skincare after<br />

twenty years because they are so afraid<br />

of adverse reactions to other brands.<br />

It seems to me that our expectations<br />

are so low we don’t look for products<br />

that deliver a genuine result, we accept<br />

any that don’t actually hurt!. (And,<br />

of course, we have no idea what long<br />

term effects they might be having on<br />

our body.)<br />

Don’t you think it’s time we started<br />

raising our expectations? If we really<br />

are “worth it” why shouldn’t we<br />

demand products that actually deliver.<br />

I do know we are unlikely to find it on<br />

the counter of our local supermarket<br />

or pharmacy, where mineral oils,<br />

parabens, synthetic dyes and<br />

fragrances and other junk proliferate.<br />

It took me a long time to find a<br />

range that delivered real results I can<br />

actually see and feel, at a price I was<br />

prepared to pay, and I’m now a raving<br />

fan and love sharing my finds with<br />

others at my workshops and events.<br />

Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now and<br />

offer you a little “spring-cleaning”<br />

challenge. Open up your cabinets and<br />

drawers and pull out all the cosmetics<br />

you possess. Creams, lotions, makeup,<br />

bath products, everything. Spread<br />

a big towel on the bed and lay them<br />

all out. Once you’ve got over the<br />

sheer volume you’ve managed to<br />

accumulate, sort them into three<br />

piles. (1) I love it, use it all the time<br />

and know it makes a real, visible<br />

difference. (2) It’s Ok. I use it because<br />

I have it but not sure it’s right for me<br />

/ doing anything useful. (3) Not sure<br />

why I bought this. I don’t use it but<br />

I keep it just in case / because it was<br />

expensive.<br />

I’ve done this exercise with friends<br />

and pile number one is always the<br />

smallest – by a long way. My advice:<br />

get a black bag and throw away<br />

everything in pile number three. No<br />

matter how much it cost, how long<br />

you’ve had it, or how pretty it looks,<br />

chuck it. (By tomorrow you’ll have<br />

forgotten you ever had it!) Then go<br />

through your second pile and sort it<br />

again into two – keep items you are<br />

going to use in the next month and<br />

toss out the rest. You’ll be left with a<br />

collection you treasure and enjoy. As<br />

you use your “capsule collection” try<br />

to work out what you like about each<br />

product so when you come to replace<br />

it, you know what you’re looking<br />

for and won’t be swayed by empty<br />

promises and false special deals.<br />
