Early Summer at Pashley Manor Gardens
Pashley Manor is proud to host an exhibition and sale of
almost 200 pieces of sculpture at their award winning
gardens in Sussex at the Sculpture in Particular event from
late May to early June.
The garden’s sweeping vistas, formal walled gardens and
winding woodland paths create the perfect landscape
for sculpture, with some pieces providing focal points
while others are tantalisingly glimpsed amidst trees and
flowers. There is sculpture on display all season from
April to September but
during the eight days
of the Sculpture in
Particular event this is
complemented by the
exhibition of smaller
pieces in the house.
Then from mid-June the
roses are at their best –
Pashley’s blend of old
fashioned and modern
roses are complemented
by foxgloves, clematis,
London pride, sweet
peas and summer
flowering shrubs.
Over the Special Rose Week there will be the opportunity to
take a rose themed walk round the gardens with the Head
Gardener and there is a great selection of potted roses, from
23 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses,
available to buy, as well as rose themed gifts from the Shop
– even the menu in the café features rose inspired dishes
over this week!
Gardening tips for Late Spring/Early Summer
by Phoenix Gardening
Gardens are beginning to come back to life, colourful
blossoms abound, Spring has sprung. I wonder as I
look around some of my clients gardens at the different
timings of the same plant. Forsythia for one has almost
come and gone in some gardens whilst it’s just starting
in others, whatever your case once it’s finished flowering
give it a prune, you can thin out some of the older stems
at ground level. Flowering currants (Ribes Sanguineum)
can also be pruned once flowering has finished. Many
types of veg can be sown outside now but check the
packets and if they have started to advance be wary of
a late frost. Still in the veg patch apply manures and
fertilisers where necessary or appropriate. We can plant
out herbaceous plants, if you have some tall cultivars
it’s wise to put some stakes in now rather than later.
Start sowing those hardy annuals.
Early summer then. Still time to plant some potatoes
if you haven’t already, it’s also a good idea to do some
successional sowing of crops like carrots, lettuces, and
turnips. Dead heading is upon us dead head border
plants regularly, if you plant up baskets and containers
now is a good time to do it. Pruning, Lilacs, philadelphus,
spireas and broom can all be trimmed back now.
Finish hardening off and planting tender bedding plants.
Keep an eye on roses for aphids and mildew, spraying
where necessary. Once the main flush of flowers is over
give them a feed.
