EAST COAST ADVENTURE
“Hi, bring your tucker and come join us,” shouted a friendly
Australian. It was October, the time of carnivals held in each
town on the East Coast. I sat with this friendly bunch on the
pavement while we watched the fantastically decorated floats pass
by. From topical events interpreted, a school gym group and a
Lindy Hop troupe dancing to a live band. “My boys are in the
gym group,” a proud spectator claimed loudly.
In Cairns nightly on the temporary outdoor stage, a youth ballet
or teenage orchestra performed. The standard was amazing
and of course the evening concluded with a wonderful firework
display over the sea.
Conscious of Australia’s paranoia regarding fruit crossing borders,
causing infestation and contamination to their crops, I complied,
eating up the last of my late lunch pack before climbing on the
coach and heading for my next destination.
The bus travelled overnight arriving at 5.00am. As had been
arranged by the previous hostel establishment, the proprietor met
me - in the oldest car I had ever seen. The rusty limo had one red
front mudguard compared to the remainder of dark blue paint
work. The chrome bumper was tied on with rope. The hotel
matched the vehicle.
I was handed the key to No. 21 and rambled through a labyrinth
of corridors. My room, last on the right at the end, having
passed through a communal lounge with drunks sleeping off the
previous evening and the stale air heavy with boozy fumes.
A quick shower, clean clothes donned, decision made -
alternative accommodation an
essential requirement. The local map
showed the tourist bureau in the
centre square. Fortified by coffee and
toasted bun en route, I was outside
the office awaiting opening time.
When I told the clerk where I had a
room she was astounded. “My friend owns the most gorgeous
B&B – newly decorated in florals, lace and ribbons, you will love
it,” she enthused. “I will phone and she can fetch you from here.”
Fifteen minutes later. “Hi, I am Shona, come on home to “Cute
Cottage.”
While enjoying a pleasant stay in Laura Ashley land, I contacted
the local club of my international service organisation.
“Welcome to our monthly meeting, hope you will enjoy your
time in our town. We are happy to offer whatever assistance you
may need in your search for a business,” the President introduced
his speaker. I was once again talking about my club’s projects
in South Africa and exchanging tokens. They were also most
helpful with contacts.
This was a farming area and the membership consisted of burly,
tough men who were dressed in their club colours - pink ! It was
before all clubs allowed women in on equal terms although South
Africa had been amongst the first to embrace the change. So
there I was, soberly attired in my navy power suit, addressing a
sea of pink shirts. Where to next ?
THE BENEFITS OF JOURNALING - by Julia Meanwell
There is considerable
data about the mental
and emotional benefits
of journaling. A study
by researchers from the
American Advances in
Psychiatric Treatment noted
that writing for 15–20
minutes on 3–5 occasions
was enough to help the
study participants deal
with traumatic, stressful, or
otherwise emotional events.
It's been specifically effective
in people with severe illnesses,
like cancer, for example. This
practice is so well regarded
that there is a Centre for
Journal Therapy dedicated
to the mental health benefits
of regular journaling, both
in therapeutic and personal
settings.
Some of the most influential
people in history kept
detailed journals of their
lives. These journals served
as a permanent record for
posterity with the additional
benefit of bringing about a
much needed cathartic release
for the people writing them.
Possibly the most famous
journal ever written
was penned by teenager
Anne Frank; she gained
international fame
posthumously after her diary
was published. She wrote
about her experiences of
hiding during the German
occupation of the Netherlands
in World War II. Her diary
was incredibly important to
her and in it she wrote ‘the
nicest part is being able to
write down all my thoughts
and feelings; otherwise I
might suffocate’. Sadly the
family was betrayed and her
father Otto Frank was the
only survivor. Returning to
Amsterdam after the war he
found that Anne's diary had
thankfully been saved; this led
to him getting it published
in 1947 because he rightfully
thought that his daughter’s
message was important.
Regularly writing about
your experiences not only
helps you process them
it can also provide more
clarity and awareness of
any unhelpful patterns of
behaviour. You don’t have
to create a masterpiece but
just writing down what
has happened to you will
more than likely lead you
onto some very interesting
thoughts and ideas. If time
is limited perhaps you could
just write a line a day; it is
not meant to be a burden so
if you’re unable to commit to
daily writing then maybe you
could just write a couple of
times a week. If you find that
you’re really too busy for a
journal then you could buy a
one line a day memory book
or if you prefer to illustrate
your thoughts and feelings
then perhaps a one sketch a
day journal is for you. Also
there are 3 or 5 year journals
available and some include
questions which can act as
good prompts if you’re lost for
something to write about. It
can make for very insightful
reading in the future!
HOSPITAL DONATES OLD EQUIPMENT TO HELP WITH MEDICAL RESEARCH
Benenden Hospital has donated an
old and redundant piece of medical
equipment to a charity to help them
deliver anaesthesia to people in need
around the world.
The Hospital has given a Boyles
anaesthetic machine to Safe Anaesthesia
Worldwide. These machines were
introduced in 1917 and used successfully
for many years but have been gradually
replaced by more sophisticated
equipment. There are few modern
hospitals which still use them but they
have proved to be extremely reliable
and are still widely used in developing
countries throughout the world.
The Hospital, at Benenden, near
Cranbrook, Kent, had the Boyles machine
in its museum, which it is currently
digitalising. When approached by the
charity the Hospital was happy to hand
it over.
The charity, which is based in Marden,
Kent, are to use the Benenden Hospital
machine for research purposes. The
machine is of value as it can be used
without the need for electricity. It does
however need a constant supply of
oxygen and this is what the charity is now
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
“...You have come in by train this
morning, I see... I observe the
second half of a return ticket in
the palm of your left glove. You
must have started early, and
yet you had a good drive in a
dog- cart, along heavy roads,
before you reached the station”.
The lady gave a violent start
and stared in bewilderment at
my companion. “There is no
mystery, my dear madam”, said
he, smiling. “The left arm of your
jacket is spattered with mud in
no less than seven places. The
marks are perfectly fresh. There
is no vehicle save a dog-cart
which throws up mud in that way
and then only when you sit on the
left-hand side of the driver”.
From the early series in the fifties
to the present day Benedict
Cumberbatch, what is Sherlock
Holmes best known for? His
acute observational skills! Okay,
so some of them might stretch
the imagination a little, but the
basic premise applies; we learn
much more and can participate
more when we really observe
what is going on around us.
Our observations, certainly on
a day to day basis, are usually
outwardly. We notice things
“I can see clearly now...”
about other people, what they’re
wearing, what they are doing,
we take note of the weather.
We might look at ourselves and
note how we are feeling, are we
happy, fed up, a little tired?
All of this is natural and good, but
do we really know what we do
in everyday activities? If I asked
you, “How do you get out of a
chair?”, would you be able to tell
me what happens to your head
when you start to get up, are you
well balanced over your feet, are
your hips and knees in line with
your feet, how much tension do
you have in your body, do you
have a closed or open posture? It
is quite likely that you won’t know
all the answers unless you really
stop and think through what you
do. The reason is because we are
creatures of habit. We just do
what we do without thinking, but,
over the years, these patterns of
behaviour can be harmful to our
health and mobility and lead to
pain, tension and stiffness. All
this can have a detrimental effect
on the body. Learning how to
use the body in the way it was
designed invariably leads to being
pain free, balanced with better
mobility and poise. It certainly
makes the aging process more
enjoyable and my goodness most
of us need all the help we can get!
The people who come along to
my weekly groups in Hastings
and Bexhill are certainly seeing a
difference in how they perform
everyday activities. They are
seeing an improvement in their
pain relief and stability. If you
would like to know more do get
in touch. Individual and group
places are available and you can
book one or more sessions. www.
One final tip on observation;
when you next go out, look up at
the top of buildings. I never did
until my daughter, who is a fine
arts graduate, recommended
that I do. You can find some very
interesting little sculptures up
there.
Tricia's column - A merry May to all of our readers
T
his time of year, things tend to go a bit
green and a bit, well wild and fertile.
I'm not confessing to getting lazy with
my gardening either. Hastings has just
played host to Jack in the Green,
where people dress very peculiarly
and get up to all sorts of merriment
and carousing.
Centuries ago, our Gaelic ancestors
would have been lighting fires and
getting up to all sorts. Apparently
they believed that this time of year
was when the fairy folk were at their
most active. I'll be sure to keep an
eye out for them if I'm walking in
the woods.
There's no doubting that something about
this time of year brings out the urge to cavort
in people. Not just people either, lambs will be
frolicking, flowers will be blooming, keeping the
bees and butterflies busy and, judging by the
amount of racket they make all night, the local
seagulls are clearly feeling frisky too. Bless their
little bin-wrecking beaks.
There's an awful lot going on locally over May
Getting into the spirit of Spring
and June this year, so you really
have no excuse for not getting
involved in at least a little excited
frolicking! Walking festivals,
and carnivals,
exhibitions, fairs
(as well as a few
fayres too, though
I've no idea what
the difference
is) as well as our
local parks and
gardens really starting to put their
best summer clothes on.
You must of course enter our
competition (below) to win tickets
to two great shows. After all, the only thing better
than a great night out at the theatre, is a great
night out at the theatre for free !
As usual in May, our sister publication, The Family
Buzz is taking a bit of a break, but they will be
sure you pop along there and give them a like!
Whatever you get up to, have fun.
Win Tickets For Two Fantastic Shows!
A great British summer simply isn’t complete without a stroll
down the prom, a fish and chip supper and a visit to a truly
ludicrous farce: and this summer Eastbourne’s Devonshire
Park Theatre has two fabulous farce offerings; 'Don’t Dress
for Dinner' returns (23 – 27 May) with Olivier Award Winner
Sara Crowe and later in the season the frenetic comedy 'One
Man Two Guvnors' comes to Eastbourne for the first time
ever (29 June - 22 July).
'Don’t Dress for Dinner', Marc Camoletti’s side-splitting
Tickets are also on sale now for the delightful comedy 'One
cemented James Cordon as a world-wide star and smashed
both the West End and Broadway comes to Eastbourne for
the first time ever.
Set in 1960's Brighton, 'One Man Two Guvnors' promises
a dazzling display of sheer comic perfection. The ludicrous
plot, original music and physical comedy combine to make
this a veritable tour de farce which simply must not be missed!
Early Summer at Pashley Manor Gardens
Pashley Manor is proud to host an exhibition and sale of
almost 200 pieces of sculpture at their award winning
gardens in Sussex at the Sculpture in Particular event from
late May to early June.
The garden’s sweeping vistas, formal walled gardens and
winding woodland paths create the perfect landscape
for sculpture, with some pieces providing focal points
while others are tantalisingly glimpsed amidst trees and
flowers. There is sculpture on display all season from
April to September but
during the eight days
of the Sculpture in
complemented by the
exhibition of smaller
pieces in the house.
Then from mid-June the
roses are at their best –
Pashley’s blend of old
roses are complemented
by foxgloves, clematis,
London pride, sweet
Over the Special Rose Week there will be the opportunity to
23 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses,
Gardening tips for Late Spring/Early Summer
by Phoenix Gardening
Gardens are beginning to come back to life, colourful
blossoms abound, Spring has sprung. I wonder as I
look around some of my clients gardens at the different
timings of the same plant. Forsythia for one has almost
come and gone in some gardens whilst it’s just starting
in others, whatever your case once it’s finished flowering
give it a prune, you can thin out some of the older stems
at ground level. Flowering currants (Ribes Sanguineum)
can also be pruned once flowering has finished. Many
types of veg can be sown outside now but check the
packets and if they have started to advance be wary of
a late frost. Still in the veg patch apply manures and
fertilisers where necessary or appropriate. We can plant
out herbaceous plants, if you have some tall cultivars
it’s wise to put some stakes in now rather than later.
Start sowing those hardy annuals.
Early summer then. Still time to plant some potatoes
if you haven’t already, it’s also a good idea to do some
successional sowing of crops like carrots, lettuces, and
turnips. Dead heading is upon us dead head border
plants regularly, if you plant up baskets and containers
now is a good time to do it. Pruning, Lilacs, philadelphus,
spireas and broom can all be trimmed back now.
Finish hardening off and planting tender bedding plants.
Keep an eye on roses for aphids and mildew, spraying
where necessary. Once the main flush of flowers is over
give them a feed.
"Mon. Cliff and Madam Karen's Disastrous Day"
by Karen Fay
On Thursday, I met Cliff on the pub terrace where we sat and
chatted until the tide came in. We the proceeded to blow up the
dinghy (not literally, though that might not have been a bad idea).
We rowed out to the boat and as soon as I was in the cockpit, I
remembered that I'd not taken the boat keys out of the car. All well
so far then! So Mon. Cliff said "Don't worry, I will row back and get
them, just give me the car keys."
I handed Mon. Cliff my car keys, together, on the same keyring,
with my house keys. He dropped them into the dinghy. I pointed to
what looked like concrete that he could row to, just opposite Jouet.
I set about taking the sail cover off, when I heard
"KARRENNN!"
I looked up and Cliff was up to his waist in mud. Argh! What now?
There was a man on the shore who I heard ask Cliff if he were OK
(which he obviously was not).
"Could you give me a hand out?" Cliff replied, to which the fellow
on the shore replied "Sorry mate, aint got me wellies on."
Poor Cliff was probably petrified by now as being stuck in that there
mud is scary! I thought "For F---'s sake you silly man, go and grab
some people to help!" By this time Cliff decided to try and climb
back into the Dinghy - phew! he was successful. Onboard, Cliff now
decided to row to the jetty by the sailing club.
Next thing I heard was Cliff shouting to me from the shore that he
could not find the keys, I shouted back that they were in the car by the
gearstick. No, he shouts "I can't find the car keys!" Oh Hell! I don't
beleive it. After some considerable time of Cliff searching the dinghy,
I shouted "Come back!" When he returned, both he and the dinghy
were unbelievably muddy, and I mean unbelievably.
Mon. Cliff suggested we get the dinghy onto Jouet, let her down,
and search her for the keys.
"You are joking Cliff" I said "Firstly, the dinghy is too dirty and
seriously, Jouet is just not big enough to blow the dinghy up on. Just
climb onto the boat, have a rest, and take the dinghy back to the jetty."
Off he went, and 50 minutes later he returned with a clean dinghy
but no keys. We then called the AA (Not alcoholics anonymous) who
were not at all helpful. They could send me a locksmith to change the
lock on my door but could not guarantee not to damage the car. No
thnaks. To cut a long story short, Cliff ran me home. Or should I say
not home, because I could not raie my partner who is on strong meds
at the moment, so ended up going to my daughters, who, I might say,
is not the most obliging girl. She thankfully took pity on me and took
me in. Now all cliff had to do was find his way home. (I am sending a
copy of this to him, thank you Cliff, I hope you found your way home
OK)
I ended up getting a locksmith to get me into my flat which took
him precisely 2 minutes, he slid a piece of plastic between the door
jamb and lock. £80 thank you very much but at least I got in. This
morning I took a train to Chichester to retrieve my car!
YOUR BEAUTY CHOICES by Michele Duke
My skincare and makeup
workshops are a fascinating mix
of women from different backgrounds
and with different lifestyles. Every
person has unique skin and I am
fascinated to hear about how they
choose their skincare products. Some
have a long-standing loyalty to a
particular brand, some select on price,
and others are swayed by the promises
offered by the advertising. When I ask
“what difference is it making to you?”
the reaction is interesting. Almost
nobody mentions that it has made a
significant, visible difference. A typical
response is “it suits my skin”. When I
dig a bit deeper I find that they often
mean “it doesn’t upset my skin”. Some
are still using the same skincare after
twenty years because they are so afraid
of adverse reactions to other brands.
It seems to me that our expectations
are so low we don’t look for products
that deliver a genuine result, we accept
any that don’t actually hurt!. (And,
of course, we have no idea what long
term effects they might be having on
our body.)
Don’t you think it’s time we started
raising our expectations? If we really
are “worth it” why shouldn’t we
demand products that actually deliver.
I do know we are unlikely to find it on
the counter of our local supermarket
or pharmacy, where mineral oils,
parabens, synthetic dyes and
fragrances and other junk proliferate.
It took me a long time to find a
range that delivered real results I can
actually see and feel, at a price I was
prepared to pay, and I’m now a raving
fan and love sharing my finds with
others at my workshops and events.
Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now and
offer you a little “spring-cleaning”
challenge. Open up your cabinets and
drawers and pull out all the cosmetics
you possess. Creams, lotions, makeup,
bath products, everything. Spread
a big towel on the bed and lay them
all out. Once you’ve got over the
sheer volume you’ve managed to
accumulate, sort them into three
piles. (1) I love it, use it all the time
and know it makes a real, visible
difference. (2) It’s Ok. I use it because
I have it but not sure it’s right for me
/ doing anything useful. (3) Not sure
why I bought this. I don’t use it but
I keep it just in case / because it was
expensive.
I’ve done this exercise with friends
and pile number one is always the
smallest – by a long way. My advice:
get a black bag and throw away
everything in pile number three. No
matter how much it cost, how long
you’ve had it, or how pretty it looks,
chuck it. (By tomorrow you’ll have
forgotten you ever had it!) Then go
through your second pile and sort it
again into two – keep items you are
going to use in the next month and
toss out the rest. You’ll be left with a
collection you treasure and enjoy. As
you use your “capsule collection” try
to work out what you like about each
product so when you come to replace
it, you know what you’re looking
for and won’t be swayed by empty
promises and false special deals.
GEORGE ST. HASTINGS
with
MIKE RAXWORTHY
This issue I thought I’d concentrate on some of the
great events you can see on The Stade Open Space
during this summer season. The good news is that they
are all FREE! Hundreds of years ago this area was
gifted by the Crown to the people of Hastings (the
Common Man) and as such no one can make a profit
when putting any form of entertainment on this area!
On Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June the 4th I’m
putting on the Hastings Winkle Club Jazz and Blues
Festival on The Stade site. It’s a charity concert and
all funds from it go to the famous old Hastings Charity
- The Winkle Club.
with
They in turn give out thousands of
pounds
MIKE
worth of
RAXWORTHY
donations to a whole host of local
charities and good causes. This year it amounts to
almost £30,000!
Eight of the Old Town’s best live music venues are
sponsoring it: The Albion, The Anchor, The Jenny Lind,
The Old Market, The Dragon Bar, Porters Wine Bar,
The London Trader and The Lord Nelson. From Friday
2nd June they will be providing Jazz, Blues or Funky
Soul bands, as well as giving money towards the acts
on the main stage. We've also got sponsorship from
many local businesses including this very magazine:
Saturday 3rd June I’ll be presenting on the Stade
open Space - 2pm: The Helen Sharpe Jazz Quartet
- 3pm: The Red Butler Blues Band, 4.30pm: J a n e
Reeves Triple Delight, 3 piece female vocals and
band, 6pm: The legend that is Herbie Flowers, with
Mike Hatchard and band. 7.30pm - 9pm: Stade
Saturdays (HBC funded) has kindly sponsored me to
present the uncrowned Queen of Jazz, our very own
Liane Carroll! A full set - not to be missed!
On Sunday 4th June we open at 10am. Come and
join us for a Jazz Breakfast. Choose from a selection
of Breakfast Baps, teas of coffee and listen to The
20 strong Invicta Jazz Orchestra. At 2pm I have
Hexagonal - 6 of the very best jazz instrumentalists in
the country! These guys have played behind many
of the big names in music. 3pm: The Greg Coulson
Blues Band, at only 25 Greg has played with The
Selector and played lead in the west end show: The
Moroccan Spiced Meatballs with Cous-Cous - Recipe by Faz Razeen
Add a bit of North African sunshine to your table
with beef or lamb meatballs in a spicy tomato
sauce.
A Moroccan meatball is made up of minced
meat, (normally lamb or beef but use whatever
you prefer) rolled into a small ball, along with
ingredients, such as breadcrumbs, grated onion,
eggs, olive oil and spices.
Prep-time: 20-25 mins, cooking time: 40 mins
Serves: 2 generous portions
INGREDIENTS:
250g Lean minced beef. Season minced beef with
salt and pepper.
2-3 tsp olive oil
1 egg
35g (1/2 cup) fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
1 medium red onion grated finely
1-2 clove garlic crushed
2 tsp Ras-el-Hanout spice
1 small red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped.
2 tbsp. chopped fresh coriander
1 red pepper, cut into small cubes or sliced
1 tbsp. tomato puree
100 ml vegetable stock
400g tin tomatoes
METHOD:
1. Place minced beef in a bowl and add garlic,
onion, egg, breadcrumbs, then add 1 teaspoon of
Ras-el-Hanout spice to the mixture and form into
good size balls.
2. Heat olive oil in a non-stick saucepan. Add
meatballs and cook over a medium heat for about
5 minutes turning gently until brown all over, then
transfer meatballs to a plate.
3. Heat up saucepan and add sliced red pepper,
chopped coriander, 1/2 red chilli and gently fry
on a medium heat for under one minute, mix in
1 teaspoon of Ras-el-Hanout. Next add tinned
tomatoes and tomato puree. Stir well for a further
minute, then add your meatballs & stock, place a
lid on the pan and gently simmer for 25 minutes.
The meatballs will be fully cooked and the sauce
will thicken slightly. Remove lid and increase heat
slightly for last 10 minutes, add your coriander
just before serving.
These meatballs work very well with couscous, or
alternatively serve with rice or vegetables.
