Dear friends,<br />
As <strong>VINE</strong> celebrated its 15th birthday this year, I experienced a rich<br />
time of reflection. In 1995, <strong>VINE</strong> was a fledgl<strong>in</strong>g little non-profit<br />
housed <strong>in</strong> a t<strong>in</strong>y office at the Pas<strong>to</strong>ral Center of SS. Peter and Paul’s<br />
Catholic Church. As the found<strong>in</strong>g direc<strong>to</strong>r and the only staff person<br />
for the first couple years, it was often necessary for me <strong>to</strong> lock the<br />
office and personally give someone a ride <strong>to</strong> the doc<strong>to</strong>r. My adult<br />
children now joke about the times I would drive them and their<br />
junior-high-aged friends <strong>to</strong> shovel snow at care receivers’ homes<br />
before tak<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>to</strong> school. Our board members (and their kids)<br />
did similar good deeds as <strong>VINE</strong>’s roots began <strong>to</strong> spread through <strong>our</strong><br />
community.<br />
At <strong>VINE</strong> we’re pragmatic and will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> do what needs <strong>to</strong> be<br />
done so that people get the help they need. In 15 short years, <strong>VINE</strong>’s<br />
budget, scope of service, and impact have all grown exponentially. With that said, I believe that<br />
we have stayed true <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> purpose and <strong>our</strong> homegrown roots. Over the years, we have taken<br />
calculated risks <strong>to</strong> enhance the life of <strong>our</strong> community and susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> services. For example:<br />
eIn 2006, when The Manka<strong>to</strong> Area Senior Citizens Center board of direc<strong>to</strong>rs decided <strong>to</strong> cease<br />
operation of the Summit Center, <strong>VINE</strong> stepped up and agreed <strong>to</strong> manage the 50-year-old<br />
senior center. Under <strong>VINE</strong>’s leadership, a wide array of wellness programs and volunteer<br />
opportunities have produced exponential growth <strong>in</strong> Summit Center participation.<br />
eAlso <strong>in</strong> 2006, at the request of the Greater Manka<strong>to</strong> United Way, <strong>VINE</strong> implemented the<br />
People <strong>to</strong> Jobs Program. Where public transportation is not a viable option, <strong>VINE</strong> drivers<br />
provide employment transportation <strong>to</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle parents, people with disabilities, new Americans<br />
and other low-<strong>in</strong>come workers – and make daycare s<strong>to</strong>ps for the worker’s children as needed.<br />
eThis past year, <strong>in</strong> response <strong>to</strong> decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g public fund<strong>in</strong>g and expand<strong>in</strong>g human need, we opened<br />
the <strong>VINE</strong> Home Thrift S<strong>to</strong>re <strong>to</strong> provide a new revenue stream and licensed some of <strong>our</strong><br />
vehicles as cabs <strong>to</strong> ensure that neighbors with limited res<strong>our</strong>ces could access needed<br />
medical care.<br />
Our will<strong>in</strong>gness <strong>to</strong> respond <strong>to</strong> local needs has created a space problem that must be<br />
addressed so we can cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> grow. In com<strong>in</strong>g months, you’ll hear more about <strong>our</strong> plans<br />
<strong>to</strong> re-purpose the Nichols Build<strong>in</strong>g on the orig<strong>in</strong>al MSU campus. With additional program and<br />
park<strong>in</strong>g space, <strong>VINE</strong> will be able <strong>to</strong> do so much more <strong>to</strong> help friends and neighbors age with<br />
dignity and grace <strong>in</strong> the community we love.<br />

From the Board President<br />
I jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>VINE</strong> Board <strong>to</strong> help others <strong>in</strong> need, and <strong>to</strong> understand and better appreciate<br />
what <strong>VINE</strong> really does. My time as the board president has been truly eye open<strong>in</strong>g for me <strong>to</strong><br />
see how much <strong>VINE</strong> contributes <strong>to</strong> the community, especially people <strong>in</strong> need. <strong>VINE</strong> fills <strong>in</strong> a<br />
huge gap that forms as we get sucked <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> own busy lives and forget what is happen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
around us. Those who are <strong>in</strong> need may be call<strong>in</strong>g out for help<br />
and we can simply forget <strong>to</strong> hear them while we are busy<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g, driv<strong>in</strong>g kids <strong>to</strong> their <strong>to</strong>urnaments, or hav<strong>in</strong>g fun. But<br />
<strong>VINE</strong> is always there for them. Most importantly for me, a busy<br />
mom and small bus<strong>in</strong>ess owner, <strong>VINE</strong> rem<strong>in</strong>ds me <strong>to</strong> always<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k about them.<br />
At this moment, <strong>VINE</strong>’s operations are divided <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> bits<br />
and pieces of locations. We do not have enough space for<br />
the Summit Center’s ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g participants, park<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
the Summit Center and office, and s<strong>to</strong>rage for all the lawn<br />
mowers, snow blowers, walkers, and other <strong>to</strong>ols that <strong>VINE</strong><br />
uses for help<strong>in</strong>g others. If the Nichols Build<strong>in</strong>g can become<br />
<strong>VINE</strong>’s operational center, it can house the Summit Center,<br />
<strong>VINE</strong> employee offices, and all the necessary s<strong>to</strong>rage, improve<br />
the safety and size of <strong>VINE</strong>/Summit Center park<strong>in</strong>g lots, and<br />
provide added spaces for wonderful new classes and activities.<br />
I hope <strong>to</strong> see comfortable spaces for older adults <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>gle and just have a good time, <strong>to</strong><br />
exercise without feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>timidated, <strong>to</strong> participate <strong>in</strong> many fun classes, and <strong>to</strong> meet others<br />
so that their life is <strong>in</strong>dependent and mean<strong>in</strong>gful. I also hope <strong>to</strong> see a neat, comfortable, and<br />
affordable café that everyone <strong>in</strong> the community can use and that will give older adults the<br />
opportunity <strong>to</strong> gather with people who may not otherwise participate <strong>in</strong> Summit Center<br />
activities.<br />
Integration of the Summit Center, chore group, transportation group, and all the other<br />
<strong>VINE</strong> office workers <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> one build<strong>in</strong>g will make daily operations even more efficient. I see the<br />
Nichols Build<strong>in</strong>g becom<strong>in</strong>g a new campus for a community of people that <strong>in</strong>cludes those who<br />
are <strong>in</strong> need, those who are will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> help, and all of us who need <strong>to</strong> hear how we can help<br />
and be helped out of that gap that forms if we forget what is happen<strong>in</strong>g around us.<br />

Highlights and Miles<strong>to</strong>nes<br />
The <strong>VINE</strong> Home Thrift S<strong>to</strong>re opened for bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> the former Slumberland Clearance<br />
Center at 77 Star Street <strong>in</strong> Manka<strong>to</strong>. Specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> gently-used home furnish<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />
accessories, <strong>VINE</strong>’s social enterprise realized a profit dur<strong>in</strong>g its first ten months of<br />
operation.<br />
<strong>VINE</strong>’s Christmas Shar<strong>in</strong>g Project helped 65 local neighbors <strong>to</strong> have a brighter holiday<br />
celebration.<br />
<strong>VINE</strong> <strong>Faith</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Action</strong> celebrates 15 years of service <strong>to</strong> the people of Blue Earth and<br />
Nicollet Counties. With k<strong>in</strong>dness and compassion, staff and volunteers have assisted<br />
thousands of care receivers and their family members <strong>to</strong> face the challenges of grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
older or liv<strong>in</strong>g with a disability or difficult life circumstance. 400 people attended<br />
<strong>VINE</strong>’s summer birthday party at Wheeler Park <strong>in</strong> North Manka<strong>to</strong>.<br />
In response <strong>to</strong> MN Department of Human Services’ decision <strong>to</strong> no longer reimburse<br />
for unloaded miles, <strong>VINE</strong> purchased three vehicles and licensed them as taxicabs.<br />
Volunteer drivers use these vehicles each day <strong>to</strong> provide medical rides <strong>to</strong> community<br />
members whose health care is funded through a state health plan.<br />
Greg White, a licensed contrac<strong>to</strong>r, jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>VINE</strong> staff as the chore program manager.<br />
We acknowledged with gratitude the services of Fred Miller, who served <strong>VINE</strong><br />
well dur<strong>in</strong>g his eight year tenure <strong>in</strong> that position.<br />
The <strong>VINE</strong> Board explored numerous options <strong>to</strong> obta<strong>in</strong> much needed programm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and park<strong>in</strong>g space for the Summit Center and <strong>VINE</strong>’s headquarters on Third Avenue.<br />
Locat<strong>in</strong>g a suitable facility <strong>to</strong> house the organization “under one roof” was determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>to</strong> be a high priority.<br />
<strong>VINE</strong> entered <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> serious discussion with Blue Earth County Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>to</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><br />
and re-purpose the 60,000 square foot Nichols Build<strong>in</strong>g, which was slated for deconstruction<br />
when a suitable buyer was not identified. Located with<strong>in</strong> the central core of<br />
Manka<strong>to</strong>, this landmark build<strong>in</strong>g would house the senior programm<strong>in</strong>g of the Summit<br />
Center and consolidate the offices and programs of the organization. A successful<br />
fundrais<strong>in</strong>g effort would allow <strong>VINE</strong> room <strong>to</strong> grow and develop programs and services<br />
<strong>to</strong> address the needs of the com<strong>in</strong>g age wave.<br />
e<strong>VINE</strong>’s professional staff visited and registered 198 first time care receivers: 30<br />
people < age 65 and 168 people age 65+. This represents a 28% <strong>in</strong>crease from the<br />
previous year.<br />
eOlder adults made 23,564 visits <strong>to</strong> the Summit Center, which represents a 9.3% <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>in</strong> usage from the previous year.<br />
e566 tra<strong>in</strong>ed adult volunteers assisted over 3,500 community members with transportation,<br />
home chores, respite care, friendly visits and a multitude of other tasks<br />
that helped neighbors through the challenges of life. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>VINE</strong> assumed management<br />
of the Summit Center <strong>in</strong> 2006, weekly participation has grown from 50 <strong>to</strong> 485<br />
people per week. The organization is rich <strong>in</strong> human res<strong>our</strong>ces; however, additional<br />
space for programm<strong>in</strong>g and park<strong>in</strong>g is critical for cont<strong>in</strong>ued growth.<br />
