We are preserving the heritage of Core Sound through the education of our children.” Dr. Ike Southerland, Promise Land Protecting our Most Critical Resource - Clean Water The importance of clean water to the Core Sound communities is a constant educational theme across all programming areas of the CSWM&HC. Without the pristine waters of Core Sound our economy and culture would collapse. Clean water has always been a vital force, providing healthy habitat for fisheries, wildlife and our communities. Our water quality exhibition is the first glimpse of the permanent exhibition planned for the future. STEM Learning in Our Backyard Fun new STEM opportunities are already being incorporated into museum programs, the Children’s Area and our current exhibitions. In addition to all the AMAZING natural history and kids programs, new hands-on STEM programs and interactive exhibits are here. Our new hands-on STEM programs will build upon our local cultural history and will include things like: buoyancy with boats, color tessellation and quilting, and natural history explorations with local flora and fauna. In addition, we are re-designing our kid’s area to have exciting STEM hands-on exhibits like: building with KEVA blocks, exploring materiality through tinkering, creating marble tracks with local materials, and exploring the physics of wind! These new STEM programs and exhibits are just a few of the fun ways we are linking local culture to STEM. Proclaining clean water our most precious resource. What’s that? 29
30 Leading a Region Down East Carteret County is part of a greater network of traditional fishing communities that have a shared heritage and cultural bond that spans generations. In today’s changing world, these same communities that fished and hunted together, are facing the same challenges. Changes brought in by opportunities such as roads, ferries and bridges have also replaced the isolation and independence of these villages, leaving many long-time residents of these Banks communities wondering what the future holds. Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center, because of its broad network of regional partners and its active voice in heritage preservation, community sustainability and environmental responsibility, provided the groundwork for what would later become the regional economic initiative, “Saltwater Connections.” Down East, grounded in the commercial fishing industry of North Carolina, is one of Core Sound’s highest priorities. Thanks to the vision of Janice Smith and the leadership of museum staff, Carteret County’s most meaningful gathering of the year, the Blessing of the Fleet, is held each October in Morehead City. The statewide local branding initiative for fresh local seafood, NC Catch, had its beginning with the establishment of Carteret Catch, led and supported by the Core Sound Museum and its volunteers. Partnering with Carteret Community College, small business workshops, classes and Down East’s first public computer access location, was held at the Core Sound Museum. Focusing on traditional businesses such as boatbuilding and seafood-related small companies, Carteret Community College recognized the need and help provide new skills for small business owners Down East. The nationally designated Outer Banks National Scenic Byway has brought important regional marketing opportunities to Down East Carteret County. Serving as the Southern Gateway to this 138-mile trek of marshes and fishing communities, ferries, bridges and a sliver of pavement along the water’s edge, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center has opened doors of opportunity for local heritage-based businesses in Carteret County. Blessing Our Fleet and Our Heritage No gathering is more meaningful to Coresounders than the Blessing of the Fleet, a time to gives thanks for God’s continued blessing on our commercial fishing industry. Thank you for sharing with us this special time when we pause to ask for God’s continued blessing on our fishing industry ... A time when we stop to give thanks for the abundant natural resources that God, the Creator, has provided us. This is also a time of remembrance, a time to remember those fishermen, fathers, grandfathers, brothers who have gone before. They were the ones who built the courthouses, built the schools, built the churches along the coast. The North Carolina fishing industry has played an important role in North Carolina’s history ... and will settle for nothing less than the same role in the future.
