Vinexpo – a Guiding Light
Among The Mighty Waves
of Wines and Spirits
The wine market, with a value of over e 25 billion
worldwide, continues to be a bright spot in the
global economy, having seen spectacular regrowth
in the past few years, with new dynamics
engendered through waves of innovation and
quality.
To this end, Vinexpo Bordeaux is the “guiding light”
for key industry buyers, setting and mapping key
trends and news, promoting thought leadership
and networking, and consequently creating a new
dynamic in the sector.
In this first ever “live” edition of Vinexpo Daily –
your information source at the world’s premier event
for the wine and spirits world – we spotlight the
broader Americas, where the industry continues
to increase in dynamic and growth, and make of
course a special focus on this year’s guest nation,
the USA.
Illustration for growth in the Americas is that of
Concha y Toro (see our exclusive interview with
group chairman Alfonso Larraín Santa María -
page 9), who last year, for the first time, topped
the billion dollar mark in turnover. Their flagship
brand Casillero del Diablo grew a phenomenal
17.4% last year alone.
Vinexpo is a true “platform for encounters” of all
kinds; not only a platform for doing business, but
a place for meeting old friends, and above all an
incredible place for networking in a wonderful
ambiance.
Our aim, through the information presented in this
publication, is to provide you with the key facts you
will need to assist in your decision-making process
at the show.
We greatly look forward to your feedback!
Taste the Unexpected
Networking, discovery… and BUSINESS: Vinexpo is the place to be
The 18 th edition of Vinexpo will
feature a number of great innovations,
including a redesigned layout,
conferences and first-time tastings.
With a high level of participants
and an exceptional programme of
networking events, free tasting zones
as well as a customised service
for appointments between buyers
and exhibitors, Vinexpo creates an
environment conducive to exchanges,
meetings and contract-signing.
With 2,350 exhibitors originating
from 42 countries and 48,000
visitors from 120 countries, the five
days of Vinexpo are an opportunity
to discover new products, expand
product portfolios and fill one’s order
books. Beyond the business meetings,
Vinexpo proposes a programme of
tastings and varied conferences for
the discovery of different products
and market trends.
This year, the market is marked by
cautious optimism and disparate
economic trends, depending on the
market. The latest IWSR / Vinexpo
survey noted an increase of global
wine consumption by 2.7% between
2009 and 2013 to 2,648 billion
9 litre cases (more than 31.7 billion
bottles). For the period 2014 - 2018,
the study forecasts an acceleration
of global growth. In 2018, world
consumption is forecast at 2,732
billion 9-litre cases (32.78 billion
bottles).
For spirits, the challenge of the next
years will be of major proportion.
Global consumption reached 3,069
million 9-litre cases in 2013, an
increase of 19.1% compared to
2009. Between 2014 and 2018,
consumption is expected to increase
again, but much more weakly (+ 3%),
reaching 3,180 million crates.
High-growth countries include the
United States, so it is therefore no
coincidence that the nation be
highlighted this year as the guest
country of honour at Vinexpo.
Numerous conferences and tastings
will be dedicated to the USA,
whose wine consumption grew by
23.3% between 2009 and 2013,
accompanied by a rise in quality
demand. Vinexpo/IWSR forecasts
growth of 11% for the period 2014-
2018.
at THE BLEND – a “natural” choice
This year’s Vinexpo will not only be the showcase
for the latest achievements of Tovaritch! at the
company’s exhibition stand, but the brand is also
sponsoring the Blend networking parties - a new
initiative introduced by Vinexpo this year.
Sold mainly in the hotel/restaurant market,
Tovaritch! has a strong presence in more than 30
countries, including the USA, Canada, China,
Europe (London, Brussels, Paris, Milan, Gstaad,
Ibiza, Rimini, Cannes) and Africa.
“We set out on this journey with an ambition to
build a best in class vodka brand, and today we
are proud of our achievements”, says Eugenio Litta
Modignani, CEO of Tovaritch Spirits International
SA. “But we are not going to leave it at that.
Business is like relationships – it either grows or
dies. We are full of ideas and drive. Our new
avant-garde image reflects our intentions and
gives us inspiration for action.”
and the company makes a point of sourcing all
raw materials locally. Spring wheat and rye come
from the Volga region known for its lavish harvests
of high-grade grain. Water is drawn from an
underground well in the environmentally friendly
Saint Petersburg region.
Mr Litta Modignani says the inclusion of his vodka
at The Blend was an obvious choice: “If I were
to name two things that define the Blend I would
point out quality and style. The same is true about
our premium vodka brand. So, it was only natural
that we should decide to join forces. Like attracts
like. The Blend parties offer us a great opportunity
to present our unique formula to top professionals
and industry leaders in the exclusive atmosphere of
Bordeaux. With Tovaritch flowing freely, nobody
will be drinking alone.”
At Vinexpo, visitors will have the chance to discover
the “new look” Tovaritch! – an enhancement of the
brand’s character – bold, innovative and forwardlooking.
Tovaritch! Is differentiated through the fact that only
natural, organic, non-GMO ingredients are used,
TRADE TALK
PRESS CORNER
Doug Frost
Master Sommelier
and Master of Wine
Alain Marty
President of the Wine & Business Club and
presenter of the programme “In Vino BFM”
Frost on The Vines
Vinexpo – seen by one of the world’s top
sommeliers and consultants
Among his various “hats”, US-based author, Master Sommelier and
Master of Wine, Doug Frost wears that of being the global wine and
spirits consultant for United Airlines. We asked Doug what his key
reasons were for attending Vinexpo…
With a remarkable abundance of
wineries and importers available, I have
the opportunity to see key suppliers in
a setting conducive to my business and
literary goals.
As well, there are so many chances
to taste critical wines and interview
prominent vintners and industry
luminaries that I would be crazy to pass
up this opportunity.
What kind of products are you expecting
to find/ or looking forward to discover?
I have certain regions for which I am
responsible to write with an informed
stance for LE PAN wine magazine; I will
be seeking out a number of important
wineries to taste their newest wines
and talk to them about their plans. My
goal for my readers is to give them the
background they need to understand
why the wines of a particular region
are as they are, and the context that will
enable them to see what may be next for
the wines of that region.
THERE ARE
SO MANY
CHANCES TO TASTE
CRITICAL WINES
AND INTERVIEW
PROMINENT VINTNERS
AND INDUSTRY
LUMINARIES
Which producer region/ country/
category should one keep an eye on,
because of the interesting products it
produces?
My regions of interest are Portugal,
Spain, Oregon and Washington State
in the USA.
What is your “secret” to a successful
Vinexpo visit?
Don’t try to do too much, but enjoy
thoroughly your chance to visit with your
heroes and favourites in the world of
wine.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Breaking the Billion Dollar Barrier
Concha y Toro celebrates a “very good year” at Vinexpo
Alfonso Larraín Santa María
Chairman of the board of Viña Concha y Toro
Alfonso Larraín Santa María is Chairman of the board of
Viña Concha y Toro since 1998, a position from which
he has striven to strengthen the company’s image of
prestige in the world’s main markets.
He joined the company as director in 1969 and has been
chief executive (1973-1989) and vice-chairman of the
board (1989-1998). Over this time, he has pursued a
strong policy of opening to external markets.
In the 1980s, he served for two periods in the
presidency of the Association of Chilean Wine Exporters
and Bottlers.
He is also currently a director of Viñedos Emiliana.
2014 was an important year for Concha y Toro as the group
saw positive results from its commercial strategy aimed at
growing the premium category and maintaining its leadership
as a global competitor. With annual sales of US $1,018 million,
the company broke through the billion-dollar mark for the first
time. We asked group chairman Alfonso Larraín Santa María
what the company’s success comes down to…
In particular, the company’s flagship
brand, Casillero del Diablo,
sealed an historic 2014 with an
annual growth of 17.4%. The
results are largely attributable to a
strengthening of Concha y Toro’s
overseas subsidiaries, collectively
accounting for 66% of company
sales. This strategy has led to a
more informed understanding
of individual markets, resulting
in enhanced positioning and
increased distribution for Concha
y Toro’s comprehensive portfolio of
multiple brands.
A specific milestone in 2014 was
the opening of Concha y Toro’s
Centre for Research and Innovation
in the Maule Valley dedicated
to fostering a more sustainable
future for the wine industry through
research and education. The centre
will focus on the analysis of all
aspects of healthy vine production,
the development of new technology
to increase product quality with
minimal environmental impact
and the efficient integration of
technology into winery practices.
Of specific note is the fact that the
facility is for the use of the industry
not just Concha y Toro.
What’s new at Vinexpo 2015
from Concha y Toro?
Concha y Toro, as every year, will
feature a large and comfortable
stand, where visitors can experience
our wines. In our new location in
the centre of Les Terrasses, we will
be together with some renowned
brands of wines and spirits in an
exclusive space. We have been
working on a very modern and
innovative stand, that enables us
to show our new products and
news. Special tastings held by
our Chilean winemakers Marcelo
Papa and Enrique Tirado and
also our related winery Fetzer
Vineyards from California will be
present with winemaker Bob Blue.
Visuals showing our wonderful
vineyards throughout Chile, our
history and, especially, new
projects that will shape our future
can also be appreciated there. At
the stand, international chef Ruth
Van Waerebeek, will present new
recipes and pairings for the wines
of our portfolio.
New launches include Casillero del
Diablo Legend, the Super Premium
Cabernet Sauvignon of the brand.
We will also present the new
Center for Research and Innovation
(CRI) in the Maule valley, Chile’s
seventh region. This project was
conceived to do applied research
and develop new technologies in
the areas of viticulture and enology,
seeking to contribute to the
development and competitiveness
of Chile’s wine industry.
What are your plans for future
growth in production and sales?
We believe the future looks
bright and Concha y Toro has an
advantageous position thanks to a
How important is Vinexpo in your
global marketing plan?
Vinexpo is an internationally
renowned exhibition of wines and
spirits, the most important in the
world and for Concha y Toro has
become a platform of encounter
between the most famous wineries
in the world and professional
buyers from the five continents.
Once again our winery will be
sharing there its tradition and
history, its portfolio of wines
and, above all, releasing its new
projects. It is very important to our
marketing plan but also is a unique
platform to set up meetings, to
show our innovations and share
our spirit as a company from the
New World that is truly global, to
show our passion for excellence
and character and our wines that
stand out in quality.
NEW LAUNCHES INCLUDE
CASILLERO DEL DIABLO LEGEND,
THE SUPER PREMIUM CABERNET
SAUVIGNON OF THE BRAND
Almaviva. Is it true the partnership
was spawned at Vinexpo?
Bordeaux has been always a
unique showcase for Almaviva:
to present new vintages and it
is also a natural stage to show
the development and growth
of this iconic wine, benchmark
of excellence and quality in the
international market.
Almaviva is the result of the vision
of two companies – Concha y Toro
and Baron Philippe de Rothschild –
to create an exceptional wine.
The first vintage (1996) achieved
immediately international success
upon its launch in 1998. But
this venture was only possible
with the continued support and
collaboration of Baroness Philippine
de Rothschild, my friend and our
partner, who always accompanied
us in all our projects and dreams.
Unfortunately she passed away
last year, but her memory continues
living in this outstanding wine.
Being here at Vinexpo this year, is
special and I am sure we will miss
her energy and joy of living.
Les Jamelles Reveals New Rosé
The Languedoc brand Les Jamelles unveils its
latest creation at Vinexpo: “Clair de Rose”:
a delicious, subtle and fruity rosé that evokes
the sweetness of the Southern art of living.
Created and developed with passion by
of impeccable quality, which have emerged
over nearly 25 years as a reference among
Pays d’Oc wines.
In this latest creation, Grenache and Cinsault
complement each other harmoniously. With
a luminous soft pink colour, Clair de Rose
immediately seduces with its floral aromas,
Organdi 2014
A hymn to elegance
Launched for the first time last year, the cuvée prestige of the Domaine de la
Croix is back at Vinexpo in a new vintage: a chic “haute couture” rosé.
In announcing the wine, the
winemaker says it wants to offer a
“premium” vintage, so the wine is
presented in a brand new bottle,
named “Renaissance Blanche”
(white Renaissance).
Located at the foot of la Croix Valmer,
in the popular region of the Saint-Tropez
peninsula, the vineyards have benefited from
considerable work to become a model in the
region in just a few years: the most important
Cru Classé in Provence.
ORGANDI 2014: RARE AND PRECIOUS
Only 6,500 bottles are produced: a blend
of 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and 10%
Mourvedre, Organdi is the subject of the
most precise care: manual harvest, sorting
of grapes, cold pressing under inert gas
to preserve the juice from any oxidation
and low temperature vinification result in
brightness and purity.
With a soft pink colour, Organdi 2014
captivates with its floral freshness evoking
a bouquet of lilies. Then come peach and
tangerine notes. Right from the start, the
flavour is very ample, with a fine and silky
body, a slender and lively structure supported
by a frank minerality, which continues into
final, long, full after-notes, underlined by an
elegant point of salinity.
Hall 1, Stand E-46-09
The bottle is dressed with a clean
label and is packaged in boxes of 6
(horizontal), printed in color.
Pinot Noir is the only grape in
Alsace to produce a red or rosé
wine. In this case, maceration of
the grape skins is deliberately very
short in order to obtain a very pale
pink colour. The resulting wine has
notes of red fruits such as strawberry
and redcurrants, and is delicate and
refreshing on the palate.
It will be an ideal companion for
cold meats, white meats, barbeques
and summer salads.
Serving Temperature: 8-10 ° C
To drink now or within the next two
years.
Château de Pibarnon 2014 Rosé
With its style and habitual panache, the
Château reveals its latest rosé: a harmonious
vintage.
Managed for 15 years by Eric de Saint-Victor,
Château de Pibarnon is a paradise between
sky and sea, translating, with great subtlety, the
famous Bandol terroir.
Complex and expertly prepared, the latest Vintage
of the Château is built like an athlete: powerful
and flexible.
Mourvèdre makes-up for for a substantial part of the
blend (65%) and this is complemented by Cinsault
for the body and fruit. The two are blended before
fermentation of more than 25 days. It is then aged
for 6 months.
An excellent vintage
The wine opens with a powerful aroma of citrus
fruits, small red fruits, seed fruits and finally sweet
spices like liquorice. The ample and silky flavour
is balanced with elegant body and mineral
freshness, evolving with dynamism with a long and
slightly spicy aftertaste.
This gastronomic rosé is a wonderful aperitif or
may accompany such dishes as grilled mullets, an
aioli of cod or white meat in sauce. Its structure
also complements Thai or Chinese cuisine.
Serve at 8°C.
This cuvée is sold for e20 at the best
specialist retailers.
at Vinexpo
Introducing Clarendelle rosé 2014:
the first rosé in the history of Domaine
Clarence Dillon. Clarendelle is drawn
off from Merlot and Cabernet vats after
THE 2014 VINTAGE:
AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR IN
BORDEAUX
An exceptional and sunny September
provided the winemakers with the ideal
harvest conditions. Benefiting from this
“Indian summer”, the grapes were able to
ripen perfectly, providing a stunning vintage.
2014 will be remembered as a very good
year in Bordeaux.
2014 Clarendelle Rosé is a blend of wine
made from directly pressed juice and bled
from vats of macerating red wine in equal
parts. The wines were racked at the end
of the fermentation, but some lees were left
behind in the vats for three months for further
ageing.
TASTING NOTES:
At first one is charmed by the wine’s beautiful
pale pink colour. On the palate one discovers
intense aromas of blackcurrant, passion fruits
and wild strawberries. The mouth-feel is quite
vivacious and silky, culminating with an
enchanting freshness… A decidedly seductive
wine!
160 Years of Grands
Crus Classés –
What a Celebration!
An international press dinner coinciding with the opening of Vinexpo Bordeaux
tonight will be celebrating the 160 years’ history of Grand Crus Classés in Bordeaux.
Celebrations already took place on 21 st April
at the Foreign Ministry in Paris, where Minister
Laurent Fabius underlined the importance of
this industry.
Mr Fabius, who France’s Revue de Vin
discerned the “man of the year” award this
January, said “Wines represent, beyond our
personal tastes, very serious business for our
country because they are an important part
of the identity of the French people, and the
names of the Grands Crus Classés are part of
our cultural heritage.”
The Minister celebrated the 160-year
anniversary in the presence of Philippe
Castéja - President of the Council of 1855
Grands Crus Classés.
Tonight’s press dinner will take place at
Château Margaux, which is also inaugurating
its new cellars which were designed by
renowned architect Norman Foster.
It was Emperor Napoleon III himself who,
160 years ago, requested the creation of
a wine classification system (Grands Crus
Classés). The latter was penned by Bordeaux’s
syndicate of commerce and industry in time for
The Exposition Universelle de Paris of 1855.
For this anniversary, Editions Glénat have
published a book, “Bordeaux - Les Grands
Crus Classés 1855”, photographs from which
will be exhibited during Vinexpo Bordeaux:
• In the public gardens
• At the CIVB wine bar
• At the Hôtel de Sèze
Wines from Bordeaux
Bordeaux Wine School to
Host Workshops and Tastings
For the first time at Vinexpo the Interprofessional
Council of Bordeaux
Wines (CIVB) will be running a series
of practical workshops and tastings
by its Bordeaux Wine School to help
visitors better understand the region’s
history and wines.
Bordeaux wine school trainers will
run 30-minute sessions, spread
throughout the week, on five major
themes:
• the fundamentals of the Bordeaux
vineyard
• the various families of Bordeaux
wines
• matching food and wine
• the art of wine blending
• innovations in the sector.
These classes will be held in three
languages French, English, and
Mandarin.
The Bordeaux Wine School was
founded by the winegrowers and
merchants of Bordeaux through the
CIVB in 1989. It aims to offer training
to professionals and individuals
in order to give them the keys to
understanding Bordeaux vineyards
and to make Bordeaux wines more
accessible.
For more than 20 years the school
has offered a wide range of dynamic,
innovative wine courses. 80,000
people are trained annually through
the Bordeaux Wine School around
the world, making it a leader in
France and abroad, with a network
of 200 accredited trainers and 30
partner schools in 20 countries.
The Bordeaux Wine School works
with both French and foreign wine
professionals to ensure its range of
courses and education tools are
dedicated to the needs of the trade.”
Short customise courses are designed
for importers, restaurateurs, wine
merchants, supermarket buyers and
sommeliers to help bring Bordeaux
and its wines alive for their customers.
The school therefore provides
professionals with free of charge tools
to enable them to optimise sales and
to offer their customers new levels of
quality in terms of service and wines.
Fashion is a new premium wine range from De
Luze which claims it will help “revolutionise” the
Bordeaux wine category.
As Bordeaux, it says, represents the “haute
couture” of wine it has looked to the world
of fashion designers for inspiration for its new
range.
Featuring a new tall, square shaped bottle,
Fashion hopes to step away and stand out on
shelf from traditional Bordeaux wines.
It claims the three wines in the range, a red, a
white and a rosé, have been “tailor made” for
the modern, discerning consumer. Each label
features a different clothing design to represent
the Fashion connection.
The red is a combination of 70% and 30%
Cabernet Sauvignon. The white is 100%
Sauvignon and the rosé a blend of 30% Merlot
and 70% Cabernet Franc.
De Luze is part of Grands Vins de Gironde and
the wines will be available to taste at Vinexpo
Napa Valley Wineries to Showcase
Wines on First Vinexpo Pavilion
More than 25 vintners from America’s leading wine
region present at show
The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) trade
association has brought more than twodozen
vintners to Vinexpo Bordeaux to
pour their wines, lead seminars and
conduct business with show attendees.
This is the first time in the wine region’s
history that it will have had its own
freestanding pavilion at the show.
“Napa Valley is the most well-known
and highly respected wine region in
the United States,” says Stacey Dolan
Capitani, vice president of marketing for
the 500-plus member trade organisation.
“With Vinexpo spotlighting the US this
year, the time is right for us to step up
our presence and share our high quality
wines and introduce our talented vintners
to the rest of the world.”
Due to the Napa Valley’s diverse soils,
climate and topography, its vintners are
able to produce a variety of consistent
quality wines from a wide-ranging
selection of grapes. Varieties include:
• Traditional method sparkling wines
• Light, fresh Sauvignon Blanc
• Rich, full-bodied Chardonnay
• Silky, seductive Pinot Noir
• Bold, spicy Zinfandel
• Ripe, velvety Merlot
• And, of course, Napa’s world-famous
Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley winemakers use a
combination of the latest research
and equipment, intuition and practical
experience to make distinctive wines
from their small but diverse winegrowing
region.
Given the wide range of wines produced
there, the region’s winemaking methods
have had to evolve throughout the
years and its vintners have an intimate
connection on how the art of winemaking
can bring out the best from the vineyard.
The Napa Valley pavilion, located in
Hall 1/Stand DE-190, features different
themes each day showcasing the many
facets of the diverse wine region.
At Vinexpo, activitie also include a Taste
Viña Santa Rita Highlights Importance of Sustainability
Chilean wine producer Viña Santa Rita is aiming to
“lead the way” in terms of social responsibility, having
recently scooped the coveted ‘Ethical Award’ at the
Drinks Business Green Awards prize-giving ceremony
in London.
The Drinks Business Green Awards are one of the
most important on a global scale when it comes to
raising awareness of green issues in the drinks trade,
recognising and rewarding those who are leading the
way in sustainability and environmental performance.
The Ethical Award is given to a company or product
whose foundations are firmly based in, and dedicated
to, the community and environment where they are
based. Companies shortlisted for the “Award”
included Symington Family Estates, Napa Valley
Vintners and The Co-operative, but it was Santa Rita’s
ethical and sustainable approach to all aspects of its
operations that greatly impressed the judges.
Santa Rita has in place a number of ethical and social
initiatives focused primarily in two main areas: health
and educational programmes aimed at Santa Rita
employees and their families along with projects and
initiatives for the local communities, mainly through
educational activities with children and schools.
Patrick Schmitt, editor-in-chief of the Drinks Business
commented, “Not only did this business display a
genuinely responsible approach towards its workers,
but also the wider community, with initiatives such as
classical music concerts for underprivileged children
and a native tree planting project in its key wine
region, the Maipo Valley”.
Research and Innovation (CRI), located
in the Maule valley, Chile’s Seventh
Region.”
The purpose-built modular facility
of 1,500 square metres houses a
laboratory, an experimental wine cellar,
and tasting and extension rooms. At
the centre, a team of top researchers
will conduct analysis in the areas of
genetic material, viticulture, winemaking
processes, product design and market
trends, which are part of the matrix
defined in the R&D&i strategy of the CRI.
Established in 1995, Argentina’s
Catena Wine Institute (CIW) is
celebrating 20 years as a pioneer
in high altitude viticulture.
The Catena family has been at the
forefront of winemaking in Argentina
since 1902 when Italian immigrant
Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec
vineyard in Mendoza.
The CIW is comprised of a team of
researchers with expertise in soil and
high altitude viticulture and winemaking,
and includes fourth generation vintner
Dr. Laura Catena, chief winemaker
and soils expert Alejandro Vigil and the
Institute’s Executive Dr. Laura Catena,
daughter of South America wine pioneer
Nicolás Catena Zapata who has led the
research and development department
increased qualities compatible with
efficient production systems,” Concha
y Toro says. “The development of new
projects requires incorporating key
aspects such as an efficient management
of natural resources (more scarce every
day) and addressing the new scenarios
in which agricultural mechanisation and
automation in cellars is increasing day
by day.”
CONCHA Y TORO JOINS
VIGNO INITIATIVE
Concha y Toro has marked its membersip
of Vigno - Vignadores de Carignan –
a small group of wineries dedicated
at the family’s winery since the 1990s.
“My father dared to plant Malbec in
our Adrianna Vineyard at 4,757 feet
elevation, where no one thought it would
ripen,” said Dr. Catena. “There was
some luck involved, a great deal of luck
I would say, but my father’s intuition that
sunlight intensity at a high altitude would
make ripening possible was fortunately
correct. Today with the Catena Institute
of Wine we have the opportunity to
share that research to benefit our entire
region.”
The Institute, in collaboration with the
University of California, Davis, recently
published a comparative study in
Food Chemistry on the chemical and
sensory composition of Malbec in both
the northern and southern hemispheres
(California and Argentina). The study
addresses unanswered questions in
to the revival of the Carignan grape in
Chile’s Maule region with the launch of
Vina Concha y Toro under the Vigno
brand.
Produced by winemaker, Marcelo
Papa, it hopes it will be able to bring
greater attention to the Vigno initiative
and confirm its commitment to creating
innovative, cutting edge wines.
Concha y Toro’s Vigno 2013 has been
made from grapes from very old head
trained vines, grown on red clay soils
lacking in nutrients and dry farmed in the
Maule Valley.
TWO NEW
VARIANTS ADDED
TO REBEL YELL
BOURBON LINEUP
Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon
is adding two new variants to
the current family lineup with the
launch of Rebel Yell Small Batch
Rye and American Whiskey.
“Rebel Yell is bridging the gap between
its proud heritage and modern tastes
with these two new brand innovations,”
says Fletcher Buchman, brand manager
at Luxco. “With whiskey experiencing
category growth and the new generation
of bourbon drinkers demanding
innovative higher-proof spirits, these
offerings add exciting new tastes to the
Rebel Yell family.”
Rebel Yell American Whiskey combines
50% of Rebel Yell’s original Kentucky
Straight Bourbon with 50% straight
rye, offering both the smoothness of the
wheated bourbon and the spiciness of a
rye in perfect combination. The result is
“100% American whiskey”.
At 90% proof, both new variants are
available in a corked 750ml bottle
with screen-printed label graphics to
reinforce the independent, rebellious
spirit of Rebel Yell.
“We are constantly responding to
consumer demand with our new
products and creating great experiences
for bourbon enthusiasts. The Small
Batch Rye is spicy with walnut and
black pepper notes,” says John Rempe,
director of research and development.
“And the American Whiskey has notes
of oak, caramel and vanilla which tones
down the spiciness of the rye to create a
mellower, smoother taste.”
The brand recently updated its
packaging and label and is also
revamping its loyalty program, Band of
Rebels, a fellowship of the most loyal
Rebel Yell fans and supporters. The
program will offer more engagement
with members, an updated welcome kit,
exclusive member e-newsletters as well
as great gifts and gear.
WHERE
TO GO
IN
Bordeaux
CLUBS / EVENTS / SHOPPING / CULTURE
A vibrant mix of tradition and modernity
One of the most “Michelin-starred” chefs in the world, Joël Robuchon is a legend in his homeland,
and himself is a lover of the region of Bordeaux – for many reasons. We asked him to tell us a
little more…
Joël Robuchon
Michelin-starred chef
The South West is my place of predilection with its
exceptional products and a sublime terroir of which
few areas in France can boast. Installing myself in
Bordeaux, the world’s wine capital, and especially
with my friend Bernard Magrez was a beautiful and
rare adventure: that’s why Bordeaux was “love at first
sight”. For a year now that I have been coming here
regularly, I discover this city, enterprising, vibrant,
never ceasing to embellish itself, combining the
tradition of its rich architectural past with the modernity
of the new century. It is pure pleasure to stroll along
the river, from the discovery of mansions with secret
gardens, to strolling in its green parks. Bordeaux is a
very endearing city.
Do you have a favourite restaurant and/or wine bar
in Bordeaux?
I’m seduced by the many wine bars and wine merchants
competing with elegance for the presentation of their
beautiful bottles. I find that the CIVB wine bar is a
veritable voyage, very friendly, where tourists of all
nationalities gather around a glass of Bordeaux: an
impressive range! For eating, I have a preference for
“Le Petit Commerce”, a fish restaurant owned by one
of the best fish merchants of the city that allowed me to
discover Bernard Magrez: spotlighting the product in
all its simplicity, with charming hospitality and attentive
service.
I FIND THAT THE
CIVB WINE BAR
IS A VERITABLE
VOYAGE, VERY
FRIENDLY…
Can you suggest a ‘must’ for those on a first visit to
the city?
Without hesitating, a visit to the Institut Culturel Bernard
Magrez: in addition to the regular exhibitions and the
special permanent collection of the master of the house,
the mansion in itself is a splendour in the heritage of
Bordeaux: an imposing white stone dwelling of the
18th century, with its French garden, lounges with
painted ceilings, mouldings and woodwork. And most
importantly, you just have to cross the street to enter the
Grande Maison: a true linking place between all the
arts: gastronomy, great wines, and contemporary art!
