With great joy and pride, the Arte Musica Foundation,
in residence at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, presents
its 7th season at Bourgie Hall.
Looking back at our accomplishments since the inauguration of Bourgie
Hall in September 2011, it is clear that the Arte Musica Foundation has
become one of the foremost disseminators of classical music in Quebec
today. In fact, no other institution offers such a vast array of choices
—close to 100 concerts this year!—as varied and as peerless in quality.
Knowledgeable music lovers, less experienced concertgoers, the young
and not-so-young, jazz aficionados, chamber music enthusiasts,
fans of the piano or the voice: there is something here for everyone!
Our 2017–2018 season builds on continuity. We pursue established
feature series—the complete cycle of cantatas by Bach, concerts linked
to Museum exhibitions, or spotlight series on great composers (Mozart
this year)—and welcome a host of renowned ensembles and musicians
from Canada and the world, including Les Arts Florissants, the Tallis
Scholars, Tafelmusik, Charles Richard-Hamelin, the Labèque sisters,
and Ian Bostridge, among many others.
collect to enjoy the concert experience. The Arte Musica Foundation’s loyal
public is growing every year, conquered by the hall’s convivial, intimate
atmosphere, an essential factor in creating optimal listening conditions
and exciting interactions with performers. Pure joy to everyone involved!
We look forward to welcoming you in great number, and we can’t wait
to surprise and amaze you!
The “Live” Museum: How a score can be written by many hands
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is unique in the museum world because
of the complete harmony that exists between visual arts and music within
its walls. Like an original score written by many hands in three movements,
its development can be traced to the emergence of a top-level professional
concert hall in its midst, the establishment of a music foundation
in residence, and the programming of interdisciplinary events.
In residence at the Museum since 2008, the Arte Musica Foundation is ready
to deploy a programme of innovative concerts and events, expand its
audience and its mandate as a true meeting place for the arts, plural,
and affirm its presence as a public space for artistic expression that
knows no comparison in Canada.
By its attributes and character, Bourgie Hall has risen to the top of the
Quebec music scene. The repertoire that resonates in this marvelous space
reflects the encyclopedic variety of the Museum’s offerings. Diversification
strategies in the interest of the million visitors that cross the Museum’s
threshold each year, such as preferential tariffs for our 100 000 members,
are paying off. Apart from its exceptional acoustics and the beauty of its
heritage surroundings, Bourgie Hall boasts some of the most reasonably
priced concert tickets in Montreal. After completing six, highly successful
seasons, we embrace the future with ever more excitement!
Danza!
Never did the dance hold such a prominent place as it did in 17th-century France. In this
recital of works for voice accompanied by guitar and castanets, Danza! presents Spanish
music performed in Paris during the Baroque period. With its folias, sarabandas, and
españolas, the French ensemble Le Poème Harmonique re-establishes the importance
of Spanish culture in the ballets de cour under Louis XIII and Louis XIV, as well as the French
infatuation with the Iberian culture.
Isabelle Druet was crowned “Révélation artiste lyrique” at the 2010 Victoires de la Musique
in France, and pursues a remarkable international career. Her regular contributions to
projects with Le Poème Harmonique are consistently met with critical and public acclaim.
MONTEVERDI Madrigals excerpt from Books IV, V, and VI
This programme marks the 450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s birth.
Monteverdi composed over 160 madrigals that render the powerfully emotional content
of poetic texts from the early Baroque, charged with joy, tenderness, and torment.
Les Arts Florissants, one of the world’s top ensembles, presents excerpts from
Madrigal Books which Monteverdi composed in Mantua, the city where he also
perfected the art of polyphony.
Concert presented in collaboration with the Club musical de Québec
Les Arts Florissants receive support from the Ministry of Culture and Communications, the Department of
Vendée, and the Pays-de-la-Loire region. • Since 2015 the ensemble is in residence at the Philharmonie de Paris. •
Motets by Heinrich ISAAC, Josquin DES PREZ,
Thomas CRECQUILLON, and John BROWNE
This programme vividly recalls the importance of two
great masters of Franco-Flemish polyphony, Josquin
des Prez and Heinrich Isaac, whose death 500 years
ago is being marked this year. Both composers’
sacred and secular works conveyed an innovative
brand of expressivity to a cappella choral writing.
For more than four decades, The Tallis Scholars
have brought the great English choral tradition to
audiences throughout the world. Renowned for
their “timeless nobility” (The Ottawa Citizen), the
ensemble stands, incontestably, as the international
leader of chamber choirs.
Schubert’s Winterreise stands as one of the
most deeply moving song cycles in the history
of music. English tenor Ian Bostridge has put his
stamp on the cycle by performing it over a
hundred times. He has also made a critically
acclaimed recording and written a prize-winning
book devoted to it, Schubert’s Winter Journey:
Anatomy of an Obsession. With the peerless
collaboration of pianist Julius Drake, Bostridge
brings the Journey to its apogee.
London-born Spanish soprano Sylvia Schwartz is one
of the most fascinating lyric sopranos of her generation.
Her interpretation of Schumann’s A Woman’s Love and Life
prompted one critic to write, “Though this cycle is so
familiar that we thought we knew it by heart, it is sung
with such sincerity that we rediscover it afresh.” Youthful
lieder by Alban Berg and a bouquet of 20th-century
Spanish songs complete the programme.
Following the public success of his recital in 2016 and his sold-out concert
with Les Violons du Roy in March 2017, harpsichordist Jean Rondeau returns
to Bourgie Hall for the third consecutive year. This year, he presents a musical
conversation between three key figures of French Baroque music. Rondeau’s
passion and energy are ideally suited to the spectacular and poetic repertoire
he performs for the occasion.
NAPOLEON
THE IMPERIAL HOUSEHOLD
It is well known that Napoleon
preferred things military to things
musical…
Nevertheless, during the Revolution
and under the French Empire, remarkable
composers bridged the period between
Rameau and Berlioz with consummate skill,
creating works in every existing vocal and
instrumental genre. Through their dramatic
operas, chamber music, monumental
ceremonial works, or innovative piano
repertoire, these composers effectively
ushered in the Romantic era.
In the Classical period, princes employed wind bands to entertain
them in their gardens, causing composers to give pride of place to
wind instruments in their chamber music works. Mozart’s Quintet,
K. 452, Hummel’s “Military” Septet, and his Septet dedicated to Empress
Marie-Louise, Napoleon’s wife, are prime examples of this practice.
patriotic music for special occasions, hymns, marches,
Les Idées heureuses brings to life the musical
visions of two holy women: Caterina Vigri
(1413-1463), canonized Saint Catherine of Bologna,
and Catherine Longpré, also known as the
Blessed Mother Catherine of St. Augustine
(1632-1668), of the Religious Hospitallers of
Saint Joseph. A fine musician, Catherine Longpré
arrived in Quebec at the age of 16, while Caterina
Vigri is the instigator of the first violin in history
to be made as the result of a dream. A copy
of this instrument will be heard in this concert.

However exuberant, instrumental pyrotechnics were never
gratuitous in the Baroque era. They were inseparable from
the rhetorical expression of the passions. Virtuosity on musical
instruments developed in works for violin at the outset
of the 17th century, quickly spreading to wind repertoires
that showcase each instrument’s special capacities.
In countless solo sonatas from the 18th century, wind
instruments vied with ingenuity and temerity to compete
with the violin, in reverie or clever, caprice. The trio
sonata was the Baroque musical genre by excellence
in which instruments could converse in dialogue, in play,
or in malicious attempts to trap one another!
career as a soloist, will meet as a duo to
perform Beethoven’s complete cycle
The five sonatas were composed between
1796 and 1815 and reflect the musical styles
and tastes of their respective time of
creation; the last two works, for example,
bear the characteristics of the emerging
Romantic period. To perform these five
DEBUSSY DAYS
The year 2018 marks the centenary of Achille-Claude
Debussy’s death and provides an ideal opportunity
to present an overview of the rich, evocative output
of this great French composer. Piano music occupies
a central position in the creative world of Debussy,
who produced several works that have become staples
of the instrument’s repertoire.
Debussy Days comprises two all-Debussy recitals, a third
recital that revisits the sources that inspired and influenced
him, as well as two performance events based on the
composer’s life and work. (see p. 39)
Lieder by BEETHOVEN, HAYDN, F.X. MOZART, and W.A. MOZART
At the end of the 18th century, the lied, or art song, was not yet
completely developed. The lieder of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven,
while discreet in number, were nevertheless superb and foreshadowed
the aesthetics and achievements of the Romantic era.
For his return performance in Montreal, French baritone Thomas
Dolié joins Olivier Godin in tracing the journey of the lied from
Haydn to Beethoven, including a performance of the latter’s
“An die ferne Geliebte” as well as Mozart’s youthful and mature
lieder and a few pieces by Mozart’s son, Franz Xaver.

Benedetto Lupo has invited Charles Richard-Hamelin
to join him in a performance of Mozart’s ravishing
Sonata for Two Pianos, whose spirited discourse unfolds
in the bold and luminous key of D major. At the other end
of the spectrum, Mozart writes in the tragedy-filled
tonality of G minor to express the intensity of personal
pain or loneliness. Thus, strings and pianos render
two essential aspects of the Mozartean genius.
Benedetto Lupo will also perform solo on March 22. (see p. 27)
Excerpts from cantatas, sonatas, orchestral suites,
Brandenburg Concertos, and Goldberg Variations
One of the top Baroque orchestras worldwide, Tafelmusik presents J.S. Bach:
The Circle of Creation, a multi-media creation combining text, music, and stunning
projected video and images. Works by J.S. Bach are performed entirely from
memory by the ensemble, while a storyteller guides the audience through
the fascinating world of the artisans—papermakers, violin carvers, string spinners,
and performers—who helped J.S. Bach realize his musical genius.
DEBUSSY Préludes from Books I and II
Story by Edgar Allan POE (trad. Baudelaire)
Debussy was fascinated by the literary works of
Edgar Allan Poe, whose fantastic tales perfectly
accord with his own finely nuanced, expressive
music. In this musical-literary performance,
pianist Hélène Tysman and actor Yanowski
engage with the two art forms to render a famous
excerpt from Poe’s Tales of the Grotesque and
Arabesque, “The Fall of the House of Usher”,
to the music of the great French composer’s
enigmatic Préludes.
A production by the Oreille à Plumes Company
with the support of the DRAC (Regional Cultural
Affairs Directorate) Centre-Val de Loire.
during the 17th and 18th centuries. Great composers of European, Metis, or
created works for courts and cathedrals in these prominent cultural centres.
This programme reveals the stunning musical treasures of these Cities of Gold.

human feelings: desire. Desire, as this concert will demonstrate, is an essential source of inspiration for
creators and the thread that unites all works on the programme. In a dialogue between French music
from the early 20th century and the music of today, benchmark works by Debussy and Stravinsky
alternate with pieces by Thierry Pécou. A new work on the same theme by Michael Elisson, with whom
Thierry Pécou and Ensemble Variance have strong ties, will also be premiere.
