MAY 2017
May just so happens to be my favourite time of
year, yes, you guessed it... I am a Taurian, it’s my
birthday soon... and I can’t wait to celebrate!
It’s been a very busy month here at Bounce HQ,
not only have we moved offices; I have literally
just moved the final box into my first purchased
house! Not to fear though, I have still managed to
find time to bring you another exciting edition of
Bounce Magazine, full of your usual favourites.
If you haven’t heard of The Amazons yet, you will
do! Hot on the rock music scene, I recently caught
up with lead singer Matt Thompson about the
band and their new album. I have really enjoyed
their music, so I urge you to read the interview
and to take a listen!
This month, we visited the coast for our monthly
food review, which took place at the renowned
Sutherland House in Southwold.
We were delighted to see ingredients were locally
sourced, plus, the restaurant has been awarded
two rosettes by the AA for the quality of their
food. Check out our full review in the Food and
Drink section.
During April, I was privileged to be invited back
to the annual Hobbs Fashion show to compère
at the event for the Women’s Refuge in Bury St
Edmunds. See pages 12 & 13 to find out all about it.
The Beccles Food & Drink festival returns to the
town at the end of the month. We will be there in
full force, so make sure you pop along and say hi!
Read more on pages 60 & 61.
Also in this issue, Maximo Park are back and
launch their new album, Beccles Lido re-opens,
Action Man tries Martial Arts, plus, I interview
local businesswoman Georgia Fulcher about her
business ‘Boomting Bunting’.
If you would like information regarding
advertising, please feel free to get in touch.
You can read our features and our online editions
via our website www.bouncemagazine.co.uk.
See you next month!
BY AWARD WINNING
CHEF ABDUS SHAHID
Aloo Tikki ~ Vegan and
Gluten Free
Method
1. Chop potatoes into approximately 1 inch
cubes and begin to boil a large pot of water
(about 10 cups).
2. Once water is boiling, carefully drop in
potatoes and reduce heat to medium high.
Allow water to come back up to a boil. Set
your timer for about 7 minutes… or cook until
potatoes are fork tender.
3. Once the potatoes are finished cooking,
drain and run briefly under cold water.
Transfer to large bowl and mash up with a
potato masher, leaving fairly large chunks.
You want this to be a “rough” mash. You can
also use a fork or mix briefly in your electric
mixer.
4. In small pan, combine leek, ginger, garlic,
turmeric, cumin, garam masala and lemon
zest with a touch of cooking oil and fry over
medium high heat just until fragrant… about
2 minutes. Stir spices into the bowl with the
potatoes, along with the besan flour, salt, and
lemon juice. Fold in peas and cilantro.
5. Shape into patties about 1 x 2 inches, and
deep fry at 360 °F for about 3 or so minutes,
until they turn nice and dark golden brown.
Let cool to just above room temperature and
then serve.
8
Ingredients
• 4 medium to large sized potatoes, skin on
• 1 leek, toughest darker green parts cut
away and the rest sliced thinly
• 1 inch piece of fresh ginger root, grated
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 tsp turmeric
• 1 tsp cumin
• 1/2 tsp garam masala
• 1 tsp lemon zest
• 1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
• 1 tsp salt
• 4 tbsp besan (chickpea flour)
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 cup frozen peas, thawed
• cooking oil

In aid of the Women’s Refuge, Hobbs in Bury St
CHARITY FASHION
SHOW
“Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid Centre (the Refuge) was
established in 1974 to provide safety and support for women
and children experiencing Domestic Abuse.”
On Wednesday 5 th April, Hobbs fashion store at
The Arc, Bury St Edmunds, held a special charity
fashion show in aid of Bury’s Women’s Refuge.
When sadly, I found myself in a time of need, their
doors were open to give me all of the help and
advice I required. I wasn’t alone.
Bounce Editor, Rachel Ducker, was invited along
to report and compère at the event.
“The women’s refuge in Bury St Edmunds is a
charity which is very close to my heart, so I was
delighted when I was asked to help with the event.
Although domestic violence is becoming more
talked about now a days and with shows (like ‘The
Archers’) covering this sensitive topic, until you
have lived it, domestic violence can be a very hard
topic to understand. This is now a topic that I am
no longer afraid of.
Manager Tracey Zahra-Norris and her staff were
on hand to make the event a great success and
managed to raise over £250 for the charity.
Most recently the store celebrates the win of a
nationwide award for being the top performing
store in their UK portfolio throughout the autumn
and winter season and is the second store in the
UK to have a refit, making the store a flagship one.
Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid Centre (the
Refuge,) was established in 1974 to provide safety
and support for women and children experiencing
Domestic Abuse. The Refuge has living
accommodation for up to 23 bed spaces. They
offer temporary accommodation in a safe and
supportive refuge where women and their children,
can recover from the traumatic effects of domestic
violence and make informed choices. Not only that
there is also a wide range of community services,
courses and counselling to support women to
rebuild their lives after abuse.
Hobbs would like to thank everyone for coming
along and to the staff and models on the evening.”
Contact Women’s Refuge on 01284 753085 or
see www.burystedmundswomensaid.org.uk
Some abuse is not always physical, and mental
scars can last just as long.
The popular event at Hobbs was enjoyed by
all, and guests were given a glimpse of the new
seasons fashions. The mayor Terry Buckle, was
also in attendance on the evening, as the Women’s
Refuge is one of his chosen charities this year.
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
It has been very busy
here at the ‘I’m Not Old
I’m Retro Hub’. I’m in the
process of launching my
own strip lashes product
called LILY LASHES and
I’m really excited about
my latest collaboration
with a company called
As you know, my
husband and I are
really into the Mod and
Northern Soul Scene.
I have said before, I’m
not a purist and I love anything from
1940’s-1960’s.
I also like to mix styles. So when Mod
Trainers Company ‘Tickets
Only’ approached me I was
very excited.
These trainers are designed
to replicate the trainer’s
worn buy the Mod on
the album booklet that
accompanies The WHO’s
soundtrack to the film
QUADROPEHINA. They
are of course a British
firm favourite
of the
The Wedding Cake - Revisited
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
Cakes have been
associated with
weddings throughout
history.
The Romans shared cake during
the wedding ceremony which was a
plain confection made from wheat
flour, salt and water.
In Britain early cakes were flat and
round and contained fruit and nuts
which symbolise fertility.
The shape of the modern three
tiered iced cake is believed to have
been inspired by the spire of Saint Bride’s Church in the City of
London.
Superstitions & Rituals
It is said that unmarried guests who place a piece of wedding
cake under their pillow before sleeping will increase their
prospects of finding a partner and bridesmaids who do will
dream of their future husbands.
Cutting the wedding cake is now part of the ritual celebrations
at the reception. The couple make the first cut together to
symbolise their shared future.
Ideas
• Different flavoured tiers.
• Using fake tiers to add height.
• Coloured icing to match your theme.
• Something different? Tiered cheese cake, tiered giant
BUNTING
We interview
Georgia Fulcher from
Boomting Bunting...
Boomting Bunting
provides high quality
bunting and drapes, to add
an extra burst of colour or
class to any event.
Perfect for baby showers,
birthday parties, tea parties,
engagements, village halls,
marquees, rugby clubs, garden
parties, corporate events and
many more. They can create
bespoke packages that include
drapes, bunting, lighting and
lanterns to ensure a more
affordable way of achieving the
desired look. Rachel Ducker
interviewed Georgia Fulcher
to find out more about the
company.
R: What was the inspiration behind Boomting Bunting?
I was on maternity leave and my mum wanted a hand
making some bunting for my sisters wedding. As it turns
out, our creative minds and passion for sewing worked well
together!
R: How long have you been in business?
We’ve been in business since October 2016.
R: How has the business evolved since then? After
meeting clients/other business through hiring bunting,
we soon had a lot of requests for venue draping. We can
transform any venue with our drapes, bunting, lanterns
and lights into something beautiful! We are soon starting
Throne Hire (Its big in London and we want to bring it to
the countryside) and a whole range of quirky décor hire!
R: What has been your favourite creation to date?
My favourite creation has to be our bohemian bunting
range. It’s colourful and quirky and represents us perfectly.
It can be finished with strips of material in between flags to
give a rustic feel. My mum loves all of our bespoke projects.
She loves a challenge and is a
wiz on the sewing machine.
R: How do people use your
bunting?
Our bunting and drapes are
used to transform any venue
into something special. People
can use any combination of
any colours, which creates
something unique to them.
People use Boomting Bunting
in particular, because we offer
a friendly and professional
service. We will always do
everything we can to meet
requirements.
R: Can it be personalised?
With our bunting, you can
mix any of our designs that
we currently have, and we
can make bespoke pieces for
something extra special.
R: What about the turn
around time? Bespoke designs
take four weeks on average, (smaller designs
are much quicker). Our hiring designs are
available as soon as they are booked! As soon
as the deposit is paid, we will secure your
date and make arrangements on delivery.
R: If anyone wants to purchase some bunting
where can they find you - do you have any
events coming up?
new album and upcoming tour...
THE AMAZONS...
The Amazons are tipped to be one of 2017’s biggest breakthrough rock acts
and have been listed on nearly every ‘artists to watch’ lists for 2017… it’s no
surprise as they have been independently building their sound for years.
The release of their eagerly anticipated selftitled
debut album, is out May 26th on Fiction
Records. Lead singer, Matt Thomson’s knack
for introspective lyricism shines through in an
emotive vocal delivery, completed by guitarist
Chris Alderton, coy bassist Elliot Briggs and
powerhouse drummer Joe Emmett. The
Amazon’s crushing contemporary rock is one
to blow out your speakers to.
Rachel Ducker caught up
with Matt Thomson to find
out about The Amazon’s
upcoming tour and new
debut album.
R: How did you form as a
band and when?
That’s a good question.
September 2014 was the official time that The
Amazons started. Myself, Chris our guitarist
and Elliot our bassist, had been navigating
around a fairly desolate, baron landscape
in the Reading scene for a couple of years,
after being in various bands and never really
getting anywhere. We picked up management
in a previous band, but it didn’t work out for
whatever reason… maybe because we were a
little bit too young to know which direction
we wanted to go in.
We lost our drummer from that project –
project sounds terrible! I mean we had a
band!... So, we were looking for a drummer,
we auditioned anyone and everyone in
our path, and in the meantime worked on
acoustic gigs. By this point we’d finished
school and wanted to have a crack at doing
music. We didn’t go to uni, we just got jobs at
supermarkets, me and Elliot our bassist were
working at Waitrose, and
we stumbled across Joe and
it turned out to be pretty
good. We then settled on
the band name The Amazons
and finally it just felt like
something fit with The
Amazons.
What made you settle on the
name The Amazons?
There’s a book by Arthur Ransome called
‘Swallows and Amazons’, it was a movie set in
the Lake District in the 1920s – it’s the most
inoffensive, bordering on dull, super not rock
n roll book. I read it a few years ago; it was on
my bookshelf and I thought, is there a band
called The Amazons? It sounded obvious
that there would have been though when I
Googled it there was nothing.
It’s a hard job isn’t it to pick a name that will stick with
you forever?
Ah it’s the worst, like song titles, album names, everything!
How difficult has it been to make an impact on the music
scene?
Through a lot of failed attempts in previous bands, we
kind of settled on an ethos of doing as much as possible
on our own. We are in an Internet age, we are an Internet
generation, I don’t really remember a huge amount before
dial up connections. We know what we are about and very
early on we wanted it to be a really natural thing, so we set
up a core fan base in our hometown.
This is why we didn’t move to Manchester or London and
become just “another” band. We’d do things like go to
WH Smith and buy a lot of cheap CDs, then burn our self
produced demos on them and instead of selling them, we
handed them out to anyone who came to our shows. It’s
funny as now people still come to our shows who have
those original CDs. We were in the mindset of ‘the right
people will come to us at the right time’, we will just do our
thing, create our own world, write our own story, we’ll paint
our own picture, we’ll carve our own path and that’s exactly
what happened. We ended up with really passionate
people who we love working with. I think that’s the best
advice I could give anyone, the right people will find you,
set the tone, you don’t need people pulling you along, you
need to be leading them.
I heard you played around 75 gigs alone last year, does it
ever get tiring?
Yeah it does. Its quite a tiring process, but we know what
life is without being in the band, you never really take it
forgranted when your on tour, but its tough, but its what
we’re passionate about and we’re lucky enough to have
that. Even when we played to 20 people in the early days,
it wasn’t like ‘oh no’ – it was like; ‘ah at least we get to do
a gig’. We have a love of the process rather than a love of
the perceived end game and the success. Being famous is a
bi-product of the music. If we were obsessed with success
and fame, we wouldn’t have lasted two years under the
29
MAY 2017 | ISSUE #55
radar before anyone really picked us up and
started talking about us, I wouldn’t be talking
to you now. The amount of times we played
to no one in unknown places… it can be sole
destroying but what keeps you going is your
passion for music.
What was your favourite gig so far? Have you
ever had a time standing on the stage and
thinking, we’ve made it!
Ha ha… umm that is yet to happen! It will
happen soon. I think when we play our
hometown in Reading it has a certain energy
and vibe, I think people are excited to see us
come from Reading. We actually blew out the
PA during our last visit, which was great, it
was fun and in the moment.
I’ve looked at your dates - your playing
quite a lot of places in a short space of time,
looking at your list, I’m thinking how do you
get from Sweden to Norway to Germany in a
couple of days, it must be intense?
Ha ha… umm that is yet to happen! It will
happen soon. I think when we play our
hometown in Reading it has a certain energy
and vibe, I think people are excited to see us
come from Reading. We actually blew out the
PA during our last visit, which was great, it
was fun and in the moment.
There has been such a massive buzz around
you guys… you were included in the BBCs
“sound of 2017” and MTV’s “Brand New
2017” lists how did that feel?
We feel grateful in a way that we are flying
the flag for the wave of rock bands. There
is a huge array of talent in the scene at the
moment. Its good for the genre!
Your debut album is out on 26th May, what
can we expect?
The response has been amazing so far and we
actually brought the release date forward. I
think if you’ve listened to ‘In My Mind’ ‘Black
Magic’…
I’ve actually been listening to those tracks
recently and loving them…
Aw thank you very much. On the new album
there’s a display of the more heavier and
raw sides, but I think we’ve got some other
faces to show. There are a few more intimate
and quieter moments that people might not
expect.
Thanks for talking the time to talk to me
& WELLBEING
THE SPRING
survival guide...
BY SARAH FARRANT, OPTOMETRIST
While the warmer weather and
brighter evenings make Spring
many people’s favourite time of
year, it is set to trigger a wave of
problems due to the start of hay
fever season.
Trees begin to pollenate as early as March, and
with this comes microscopic spores, dust and
pollen that irritate our eyes and sinuses. Hay
fever affects more than 1 in 5 people in the UK,
with one of the most common symptoms being
itchy, burning and watery eyes.
Here are Sarah’s 5 top tips to help you survive
this hay fever season naturally:
BANISH STUFFY NOSES
Springtime is all about getting outdoors and
being active, but feeling stuffy and blocked
up can make that a challenge. Blocked sinuses
from pollen allergies can leave you feeling
lethargic and sluggish but there are things we
can do to help. Try adding a couple of drops
of peppermint oil to a bowl of hot water and
inhaling the vapour. It will help clear blocked
noses as well as being calming!
DUAL PROTECTION FOR ITCHY EYES
One of the most common hay fever
complaints is itchy, burning, and watery
eyes, but preservative free eye drops can
help to protect and soothe them. Brand
new Hycosan Dual provides protection and
relief for allergy affected eyes. It contains all
natural ingredients which combine to form a
dual barrier against pollen, dust particles and
animal hair. It’s unique bottle design means it
stays sterile for 6 months and it’s contact lens
friendly. (£14.95 available from Boots and all
good opticians and pharmacies)
CALM THOSE COUGHS
Whether it’s pollen, or dust from spring
cleaning, breathing in these microscopic
particles can irritate our lungs and cause
coughs and sore throats. Manuka honey is
4 times as rich in amino acids, vitamins and
minerals as regular honey which makes it a
great way to stimulate our immune system
and prevent throat irritation and coughing.
Add a spoonful to your smoothie or yoghurt
for a healthy breakfast with a boost.
BE SNEEZE-FREE
Sneezing is the body’s way of getting rid of
bacteria and viruses so it’s an important part
of the immune system. In springtime however,
pesky pollen particles can enter the nose and
cause irritation leading to fits of sneezing.
Replace your coffee with a cup of chamomile
tea. Coffee contains histamine which can
aggravate allergy symptoms like sneezing.
Chamomile, however is a natural antihistamine
and a mild sedative so swap that coffee-crash
for pure relaxation.
THE
WHEEL
(OORD-vah don -
your-AHS-anna)
Benefits
Stretches the chest and lungs
Strengthens the arms and wrists, legs,
buttocks, abdomen, and spine
Stimulates the thyroid and pituitary
Increases energy and counteracts depression
Therapeutic for asthma, back pain, infertility,
and osteoporosis
Cautions:
Back injury, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Diarrhea,
Headache, Heart problems, High or low blood
pressure
How to try the pose:
1. Lie supine on the floor. Bend your knees
and set your feet on the floor, heels as
close to the sitting bones as possible. Bend
your elbows and spread your palms on the
floor beside your head, forearms relatively
perpendicular to the floor, fingers pointing
toward your shoulders.
2. Pressing your inner feet actively into the
floor, exhale and push your tailbone up toward
the pubis, firming (but not hardening) the
buttocks, and lift the buttocks off the floor.
Keep your thighs and inner feet parallel. Take
2 or 3 breaths.
3. Press your feet and hands into the floor,
tailbone and shoulder blades against your
back, and with an exhalation, lift your head off
the floor and straighten your arms. Turn the
upper thighs slightly inward and firm the outer
thighs. Narrow the hip points and lengthen
the tailbone toward the backs of the knees,
lifting the pubis toward the navel.
4. Turn the upper arms outward but keep
the weight on the bases of the index fingers.
Spread the shoulder blades across the back
and let the head hang, or lift it slightly to look
down at the floor.
5. Stay in the pose anywhere from 5 to 10
seconds or more, breathing easily. Repeat
anywhere from 3 to 10 times.
Beginner’s Tip:
The knees and feet tend to splay as you lift
into this pose, which compresses the lower
back. In the beginning position, loop and
secure a strap around your thighs, just above
the knees, to hold the thighs at hip width and
parallel to each other. To keep the feet from
turning out, place a block between them, with
the bases of the big toes pressing the ends
of the block. As you go up, press the feet into
the block.
THE TAILOR
OF DISS
Murder in a Norfolk market town...
The largest congregation to attend a service
at the parish church did not do so to listen to
Reverend Edward Chappelow. On Sunday 4th
April 1742, four thousand people crowded in to
the church to glimpse a local tailor named Robert
Carlton.
He was there under close guard, as he had been
convicted of one of the most celebrated crimes
of his generation. The following day he was to
be hanged on Diss Common for the crimes of
sodomy with his young lodger and for poisoning
his lodger’s fiancée.
The two men enjoyed a relationship, until Lincoln
tired of their secretive way began courting a
young country girl, Mary Frost, from Redgrave
in Suffolk. Carlton became very angry and
threatened Lincoln that “if he ever brought his
whores near to him he would do them some
mischief”. But paying no regard the young
couple continued to meet and a few weeks later
announced their marriage.
On the evening of 15th November 1741, Carlton,
now reconciled to the marriage, invited Mary
and Samuel Fuller, her landlord, to his house for
supper. That night she became violently sick and
died in agony at Fuller’s house the following day,
and when the doctors opened her they found all
her entrails affected by the poison.
The trial was reported throughout the region.
Lincoln admitted to his relationships with both
Robert Carlton and Mary Frost, and recounted the
threats to poison her. Finally Samuel Fuller told
the story of their meal together, and suggested
that the salt given to Mary had been mixed with
the poison.
Executions outside of London were still not very
common in the early eighteenth century, and
even a city such as later in the eighteenth century,
Carlton’s homosexuality was undoubtedly an
element in the popular interest in the case, and
an added attraction for the crowds who were
expected to attend the planned spectacles.
On the Monday morning, following his appearance
at church, the second ‘event’ was organised for
the benefit of the spectators. Although Robert
Carlton continued to deny knowledge of the
murder, he could not bring himself to condemn
his young lover who had testified against him.
Thus the two men were brought together at a
local alehouse, where, under public gaze, they
each “drank a pint of ale and ate a bis¬cuit
together, and parted good friends”. At about four
o’clock in the afternoon, the wretched Carlton
was eventually brought to the scaffold in an open
cart, and taken up in front of the jeering crowd, to
face his hangman.
Carlton’s body was put in chains, and hung from a
tall gibbet, erected on Diss common close to the
gallows, where it could be seen for miles around.
It was left to rot and be eaten by the crows.
SUTHERLAND
HOUSE
BY RACHEL DUCKER
Sutherland House sits proudly in the
centre of Southwold, a popular seaside
town in Suffolk. The Bounce team
stopped by to see what the boutique
hotel and restaurant had to offer its
coastal clientele...
enjoy a peaceful meal in relaxed and calming
surroundings.
During summer months, there is also an
outdoor seating area at the back of the house,
which is transformed into a buzzing al fresco
dining area... Not forgetting to mention, its
close proximity to the seafront, ideal for an
after dinner stroll along the promenade.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it is
advisable to book in advance! This place gets
pretty busy and if you continue to read you
will see why.
Accompanied by my good friend, Lois, (who
was more than happy to offer her tasting
services for the evening), we arrived and took
our seats in the dimly lit dining room.
“Sutherland House is full of period charm,
from wooden beams to elegant pargetted
ceilings and open fireplaces.
Dating back to 1455 this very rustic, but
trendy building, complete with its own
contemporary bar made of vintage wine
boxes, offers diners an interesting and
intimate setting.
It shot to prominence in the 17th century when
it became a naval headquarters during the
Anglo-Dutch Wars and was frequented by the
Duke of York (later James II) and the Earl
of Sandwich.
Set on Southwold’s bustling high street, this
adult only boutique establishment, offers
the perfect escape for those wishing to
Owners, Andy and Kinga Rudd, have clearly
worked extremely hard to give the building
a new lease of life. Stand out features
include the funky bar area and beautiful soft
furnishings, which add balance to the venue,
creating a warming accenting the rustic
traditional fixtures.
At first glance, the menu seemed excellently
thought out, with a great emphasis on local
food... in my opinion, this is always the sign
of a great local eatery. In fact, Sutherland
House actually print food miles on their
menu to quantify this, and only use seasonal
ingredients. Many of the fruit and vegetables
travel no more than 400 yards - from the
hotel’s own allotment - and much of the fish
comes straight from the harbour!
A glass of champagne kick started the meal,
followed shortly by an ‘Artichoke and Truffle
Amuse-Bouche’, served in a miniature
cup and saucer. Neither lasted long, a
promising start.
If you’re a meat-eater, you must try the
award-winning black pudding, which I had
the pleasure of sampling in my starter dish.
Served beneath ‘Seared Scottish Scallops
and Pork Belly, with Parsnip Puree and
Pomegranate Seeds’ it was packed full of
flavour. This, coming from someone who
doesn’t usually entertain Black Pudding!
Lois selected the ‘Candied & Pickled
Heritage Beets with Pomegranate, Stilton
and Endive Salad’. This little concoction of
ingredients had a slightly sweet and sour taste
surrounding it, the punch of the beets lead to
tones of sweetness, creating a really fresh and
zingy dish.
There’s a strong wine list on offer, and Andy
was happy make recommendations to pair
with food. My favourite glass was the ‘Saint
Clair Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough’
by Matt Thomson, which accompanied my
main dish. A crisp and powerful white wine,
whilst remaining full and well-balanced, with a
slightly salty minerality.
Being near to the coast the menu is naturally
fish-heavy, so I decided to try the ‘Pan Fried
Fillet of Sea Bream with Champ Mash and
Pistachio Pesto’, accompanied with some
Fried Green Beans & Mushrooms in Garlic. It
was particularly good; light and flavoursome
and filling but not too heavy. Just what you
desire from a main meal. Whilst I got tucked
into my fish dish, Lois got stuck into Steak.
The Grilled 28-day aged Rib-Eye Steak
complete with ‘Confit Plum Tomatoes, Hand
Cut Chips and Café De Paris Butter’, (which
contained over 30 different ingredients),
looked incredible. Sadly, I didn’t get to try
any (thanks Lois), but she did allow me to
try a couple of her Hand Cut Chips, and if
they were anything to go by, I am sure the
rest was amazing.
On to the finale, dessert! You will find a
good selection including English classics like
bread and butter to lighter alternatives.
On this occasion ‘lighter’ seemed like the
best way forward.
Lois opted for the ‘Lime & Ginger
Cheesecake with Lemon Tuille and Ginger
Puree’, whilst I headed out of my usual
‘chocolate comfort zone’ and chose
‘Pineapple Carpaccio served with Coconut
Ice Cream,’ garnished with mint, lime and
chilli. It was perfectly sharp and although
I must confess, I am not usually a mint lover,
this daring twist made the dish very refreshing
indeed.
An Espresso Martini topped of the evening
and after a quick tour of the five refurbished
bedrooms, it was closing time. We really
enjoyed our experience at Sutherland House
and as locals ourselves; we will be heading back
very soon”.
The Wines
of Sicily
Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean Islands and is at the
southern end of Italy. It has earned the reputation of producing fine
fortified wine called Marsala.
success with the British and the British Navy under
Nelson used much of it.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
For nearly 3000 years wine has been produced
here starting with the Greeks who settled in the
8th Century BC. The Phoenicians and the Romans
traded with Sicilian wine and lent their knowledge
and expertise to promoting the area. According to
legend Dionysus (AKA Bacchus) was the God of
wine who brought pleasure to mankind and wine
to Sicily.
The next important date is 1773 when John
Woodhouse started producing Marsala, rather
similar to sherry using alcohol to fortify it. It was a
The last 20 years or so has seen changes to the
Island’s culture with the production of fine wine.
The climate is typical Mediterranean, warm sunny
and hot. It is dominated by a large active Volcano,
so the soil is certainly volcanic giving rise to a
range of flavours.
DOC Wine Areas
There are 23 DOC zones in Sicily and 1 DOCG.
This category is similar to the French AOC and
controls the quality of grapes produced.
These are mostly on the mainland except
Pantelleria, an island remote from the mainland
Grapes
Sicily is unique in that it has its’ own abundance
of indigenous grape varieties which have proven
so successful with the climate and soils present.
Wines are either ‘In Purezza’ where a single grape
variety is used or blended using several grapes.
The main ones used are:-
Red Wines
Nero D’Avola - One of the oldest indigenous
grapes. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, and cocoa.
Full bodied, good acidity and tannin and great
with meat dishes
Syrah - A classic grape from France which
is particularly suited to the climate
and soil of Sicily. Full bodied and
tannic, good with meat dishes
and cheese.
Etna Rosso - A blend of two
varieties of Nerello grapes,
suited to the soils of Mount
Etna.
Cerasuelo di Vittoria - A Blend of
Frappato and Nero D’Avola with some
Grossonero and Nerello grapes. Famous
wine from the Ragusa district
White Wines
Bianco D’Alcamo - Using the Cataratto, Greciano,
Damaschino and Trebbiano grapes comes from
between Alcamo and Trapani areas.
Wines made from Grillo, Inzolia, Cataratto,
Greciano and Chardonnay are produced ‘in
purezza’ or can be blended together. Can be
exceptionally good. Great with most light dishes
like seafood and fish or white meat.
Note:- It is hard to describe each grape as they
are often, as is said, blended. Best to look at the
back label on a bottle see their descriptions, if
any. If no description there is a risk it is of low
quality.
Dessert wines
The very warm climate lends itself to very ripe
grapes and thus lots of sugar. The drying qualities
of the sun also lends itself to the production
of dessert wines. Some of these are of historic
importance and are:-
Marsala - A famous fortified wine first
produced by John Woodhouse, an
Englishman, in 1773. It is a blend
of Grillo, Cataratto, Ansonia and
Damaschino. Distilled alcohol is
added to produce the fortified wine.
Although it is famous as a Sweet
wine it is also made as dry and medium
wines. Being a fortified wine it was suitable
to export to the US in the 18th Century as the
high alcohol (19%) preserves the wine during
the long journey by sailing ship. It was extremely
popular with the Royal Navy and Admiral Nelson
himself ordered it. After the Battle of Trafalgar it
was known as ‘Victory Wine’
Passito di Pantelleria - Made from the Zibbibo
grape which have been dried in the sun, thus
concentrating the sugar. It is a small island south
of Sicily.
Conclusions...
Its use of many indigenous but virtually unknown grapes leads to Sicily providing a voyage of
discovery of new wines. You will find a range of wines to suit most tastes of Marsala, which is used a
lot in cooking, particularly Zabaglione, it is worth trying the range from dry to sweet.
INDIVIDUAL
& FUNKY
BEDROOMS
The 16th May 2007 was the date that was to
change the fortunes of the run down and loss
making Bull Inn at Barton Mills.
Newcomers to the industry Cheryl Hickman and
Wayne Starling took the “bull by the horns” and
haven’t looked back since. Non believers said to
the couple at the beginning “you don’t know what
you are doing” – this one comment from a cynical
and jealous local is what spurred this young,
dynamic and focused couple onto success.
couldn’t carry on doing the 7am to sometimes
3am / 4am in the morning!! These shifts were
7 days a week and they could see this would be
a potential problem to the business becoming
successful, so Sonia (Cheryl’s sister) joined the
team full time making the Inn a real family affair.
This also allowed Cheryl and Wayne the small
SUFFOL
When Cheryl & Wayne took the Bull Inn over
the business was losing £100,000’s a year and it
was everything you would imagine from a failing
unloved roadside inn. To top it all off they took on
the Inn in the very midst of a recession in the UK
and pubs were closing left right and center due
to this and of course the imminent implentation
of the smoking ban in July 2007. EVERYTHING
was staked up against this young and some would
say bonkers couple! But against all odds they
have transformed the unloved and failing business
into an award winning modern yet historically
sympathetic and hugely funky coaching inn.
After the initial 6 months Cheryl and Wayne
respite of a couple of nights a week off to enable
them to remain upbeat and focused about the
journey they were on. Those early days were hard
both physically and emotionally.
It’s now a destination Inn and the place that friends
meet for lunch, families come for breakfast and
business people stay over for something a bit
different to your normal accommodation and of
course locals and strangers alike can eat, drink
and enjoy the amazing pub and AA rosette dining
rooms.
The couple have led the team and the business
to win many awards over the years and have
maintained their AA rosette. One of the best
awards achieved is the “Funkiest Inn in the UK” as
voted by the anonymous AA inspectors.
Cheryl Hickman – “We had a strong vision of what
we wanted The Bull to be and we have stayed true
to that vision. We are now a multi award winning
business with our feet firmly on the ground and
Nothing beats swimming
outdoors, so why not visit
Beccles Lido, the heated
open-air swimming pool in
Beccles, which re-opens for
the 2017 summer season on
27th May.
Since taking over from the
Council in 2010, the site has
been transformed and is now a
top Waveney attraction, winning
many awards and a Trip Advisor
Certificate of Excellence in 2014,
2015 and 2016.
The Lido has a slide, springboard,
giant inflatable aquarun (daily
lunchtime sessions), outdoor
exercise equipment and a kiddies
adventure play area. There are lots
of grassy areas, sunloungers, tables
and chairs to relax on as well as
an all-weather eating and
spectating area.
By the River Waveney,
the Lido enjoys stunning
views across the river
and the Waveney valley and its café serves hot and cold
snacks, drinks and ices. With lane swimming until 10am
and most lunchtimes and evenings, Beccles Lido is perfect
for a swim or family day out. Canoe Hire is also offered
(advance bookings only). Parking at the Lido is limited but
there are numerous car parks nearby, or why not travel by
bus or train for discounted entry! Find out more at
www.beccleslido.com or call 01502 713297.
Or if you prefer a lazy day, why not take a trip on Big
Dog Ferry, which runs passenger boat trips regularly
between Beccles Lido and Geldeston Locks Inn. It is a
relaxing 3 mile boat journey along the River Waveney with
the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife en-route – otters,
kingfishers and marsh harriers are all regular sights along
the river. Disembark and enjoy a meal, a drink or music at
The Locks Inn or stay on board for a round trip. If you’re
feeling energetic you could take a one-way ticket and walk
back on delightful footpaths - why not visit Maisebrooke
Farm in Shipmeadow? Big Dog can also stop at the
Marina or Three Rivers Campsite at Geldeston, which has
attractions including the Wherry Inn and Mandy’s famous
pickles! Find out more at www.bigdogferry.co.uk or call
07532 072761.
Beccles Lido has been voted one of the 50 best things to do in Suffolk!
MAY 2017 | ISSUE #55
NEW ALBUM RELEASED
Alternative pop experts Maximo Park release their sixth studio album,
‘Risk To Exist’, available on Daylighting/Cooking Vinyl.
‘Risk To Exist’ sees Maximo Park on blistering
form, bringing together their trademark
hook-laden melodies and sense of urgency
with off-kilter rock, soulful grooves and pop
sensibilities. Informed by the dire state of
world affairs in 2016 and crumbling political
systems, their latest body of work is a vital
record for our times.
Kinetic title track and lead
single ‘Risk To Exist’ is a
barbed introduction to
the album, three and a
half minutes of indie punk
perfection crafted around
rolling snare drums, a
towering chorus and a
central plea for humanity
and solicitude. Inspired
by the West’s response
to the migrant crisis, the
sneering, superior attitude of wellbred
Tories, and the small, but meaningful
gestures of love that reaffirm what is good
in this world, it is a cry for compassion, and
simply frames the precariousness of life in
its refrain - ‘Throw your arms around me, I’ve
come too far and the ocean’s deep”.
Frontman Paul Smith says: ‘The album is,
ultimately, about empathy. Some songs are
simple messages of solidarity and others are
fuelled by anger at the elitist, established
order of British society. There’s a questioning
of power throughout and a feeling that
there must be a different way of structuring
our society in order to alleviate inequality.
Musically, the songs reflect more soulful
and groove-based influences, allowing more
space in the arrangements than ever before.
The central idea is to align great pop melodies
with songs that reflect the state of the
nation.”
These are pop songs
that talk about big issues
without talking down to the
listener; an album where the
political is also the personal.
‘Risk To Exist’ was recorded
completely live, the
recording represents another
bold stylistic step for the
band after 2014’s Top 10 ‘Too
Much Information’. Maximo
Park have also enlisted Mimi
Parker from acclaimed US band Low for
the record, whose voice lends its inimitable
warmth to five album tracks, including lead
single ‘Risk To Exist’.
With 1,500,000 albums and four UK Top 10
albums under their belt to date, Maximo Park
have once again shifted seamlessly into a
higher gear. They have expertly crafted an
infectious pop album for our time, confronting
the crucial issues track by track, one
monstrous hook at a time.
Maximo Park are Paul Smith (vocals), Duncan Lloyd (guitar), Lukas Wooller (keyboards)
and Tom English (drums). For more information go to www.maximopark.com
The Huntingfield
EASTER PANTO...
Back in September 2016, a vision
came to the folk of Huntingfield.
Brought to life by resident
Stephen Harrison, the tale of the
Sausagerous was born.
As you may be aware, most Pantomimes
happen around Christmas time, but we don’t
like to be too traditional in Huntingfield and
felt a few months practice was pushing it, so
we announced an Easter date instead.
Much better!
Word spread, and more people from the
village, (and surrounding villages,) started
to participate. Scripts were formed, Vikings
were born and the star of the show, Arthur
Freen was selected. She also happened to be
Stephen’s daughter Olivia, who knew the story
long before anyone else, which seemed more
than fitting.
Oh and did I mention what my partner Sam
and I ended up playing? Can you guess? Yes…
we were the Sausagerous monster, a make
believe creature with two heads and a slinky
body. It took a bit of practice walking under
bucket made faces and a hula-hoop body
covered in sailcloth, but luckily no falls!
Week after week, rehearsal after rehearsal,
we were almost ready. Winter came and went
and as spring sprung, 74 tickets were booked.
There was no going back.
The performance took place at The Hub in
Huntingfield on Saturday 8th April. It was a
really successful event and I think I can speak
for everyone when I say too much fun was had in the
making. A big thank you to everyone who attended, to
the cast including; the terrifying Vikings, Brian, Ken and
Stephen, the villagers - Linda, Joan, Nigel, Sue, Marie
and Frances, Arthur Freen played by Olivia, Rose her
friend who stole the show by also helping to announce
the scenes, and David, Helen, Liz, Margaret, Sue B and
Stephen who made a great job of lighting, prompting,
costumes, staging and narrating.
It is when communities come together that you realise
what teamwork and friendship is all about.
Sadly, this will be our last month living in Huntingfield
as we venture on to pastures new, but to all the friends
we have made, we’d like to say a big thank you for
making us part of the village and the Panto
of course!
Don’t be frightened of your staff
For employers an employee or former employee
bringing a claim against them in the employment
tribunal is a problem best avoided.
The costs involved in dealing with such disputes, both in
terms of financial burden and management time, can escalate
quickly taking valuable resources away from the day
to day running of the business. So is there anything that an
employer can do to avoid such claims being made against
them?
Of course there are steps which can be taken to minimise
the risk. Ensuring you have good management procedures
in place will help, as will providing your employees with
Contracts of Employment and having an Employee Handbook
which is easily accessible to employees. It will
depend on the size of your organisation and the type of
business you operate as to what areas those policies and
procedures contained in the Employee Handbook will
cover but, at the very least, you should ensure that
grievance and disciplinary procedures are clearly set out
and are in line with the ACAS Code of Conduct. An Equal
Opportunities Policy coupled with relevant training is also
important to minimise the risk of discrimination claims.
When problems do arise, ensure that you follow your own
policies and procedures and make sure that any meetings
are documented. If your employee later brings a claim
against your organisation those notes, taken at the time,
will be invaluable as evidence.
80
www.rudlings-wakelam.com
The reality is that you can never be sure that an employee
will not make a claim, however with the requirement that all
claimants make an Early Conciliation Notification to ACAS
prior to their claim being accepted by the Employment Tribunal
an employer ought to have advance notice that a claim
may be issued and should therefore have an opportunity to
consider their position and whether defending that claim or
settling it is more appropriate at that stage.
Once ACAS issue a certificate confirming that the Early Conciliation
requirements have been met then the Claimant may
issue proceedings in the Employment Tribunal.
It is important that employers seek advice from an
experienced solicitor at the earliest opportunity when faced
with a potential claim by an employee. In order to minimise
the risk of future claims, and to ensure you are best placed
to deal with them if they do arise, it is prudent to have an
experienced solicitor review your employment contracts and
existing policies and procedures on a regular basis to ensure
they comply with current law.
BY KIRSTY WOOLNOUGH
ALL ABOUT HAIR
Hair Extensions
Our hair and make-up expert, Kirsty Woolnough,
shares her thoughts about hair extensions and what is
best for your hair...
The choppy bob and pixie crop
cuts come in and out of fashion,
however, long bouncy ‘Beyoncé’
waves seem to continue to be a
timeless and favorable style.
For some of you, including
myself, we simplly cannot achieve
this look without a little help. The
answer... hair extensions!
Whether you want long luscious locks, thicker, fuller, more
volumous hair, or you simply want to temporarily add some
length to an up-do for a special occasion like a wedding,
there are many options to choose from.
In the last decade hair extensions have come along way
so you can now have hair fitted knowing it’s 100% human
hair and ethically sourced. It’s achievable to add length or
volume to your hair without using any form of glue within a
couple of hours causing no damage to your natural hair.
HAIR & BEAUTY
MAY 2017 MAY | ISSUE 2017 | #55 ISSUE | HAIR #55 & BEAUTY
A few methods used by professional
technicians currently are:
WEFTS-COMMONLY KNOWN AS WEAVE…
Stylists braid your natural hair to create a base
and sew the weft into the braid using a needle
and thread.
I TIP/MICRO-LOOP…
The hair is pulled through a bead or a tube
and clamped shut.
TAPE IN-ALSO KNOWN AS SKIN WEFT…
Where hair is applied using either double or
single sided tape.
UTIP…
A keratin utip bond attached to hair using a
heat element.
NANO…
The hair is pulled through a tiny silicone lined
bead and clamped shut.
My personal and preferred method in which I
offer to clients, is Nano bead hair extensions.
It’s very hard to find any fault with this
method, but when considering to have Nano’s
fitted, you need to do your research and have
a consultation.
ABOUT NANO’S…
The most obvious positive is that they are
very small in size. Almost 90% smaller than
micro rings. The silicone lined nanobead holds
the correct amount of natural hair placed
within the silicone ring and is clamped shut.
The silicone protects your hair from damage
and the beads are very secure.
I prefer them because they are very
discreet and when placed correctly they are
completely undetectable when hair is up or
down. Nano’s are one of very few methods
that suit most hair types especially fine hair.
INSTALLATION...
As long as you’re using a fully insured
professional for fitting your hair then
rest assured that they will be applied
safely, securely, neatly and discreetly. You
should receive all after care advice and a
maintenance service.
MAINTENANCE...
The only thing you do need to
fully consider is how to maintain
them. Every 6-8 weeks you
should be prepared to visit
your professional for a
refitting.
SUMMER HAIR &
BEAUTY HACKS
Fixing botched fake tan with baking
soda, using potatoes for home
pedicure and washing in tomato juice
to cure chlorinated hair are just some
of the summer tips and tricks you
NEED to know...
Luckily these 10 amazing hacks will help you find
both affordable and easy remedies to save your
skin and hair. Trust us, you’ll be thanking us for
these ones.
1. FIX FAKE TAN WITH BAKING SODA...
If you’re staying away from the sunshine this
summer and opting for a false glow instead, fix
any fake tan botches with baking soda. Simply
apply some baking soda on a loofah with warm
water, and exfoliate to get rid of any patchiness.
2. USE A POTATO TO PEDICURE...
Get your feet flip-flop ready by giving yourself a
home pedicure. To exfoliate the skin, cut a potato
in half and coat in sea salt. Then, begin by rubbing
along the bottom and sides of your feet for an
instant exfoliator.
3. PREVENT HAIR FROM FADING...
Sun and salt water may be great for our skin and
hair, but if your hair is coloured, it can encourage
fading. Half a cup of apple cider vinegar is a great
natural remedy to help brighten up your locks.
Simply add the vinegar to a spritz bottle and
spray all over the hair before leaving it in for about
10 minutes, then rinse out.
4. MAKE COCONUT OIL YOUR NEW BFF...
Coconut oil is a multi purpose product that is
great to use as moisturiser, conditioner, serum
and cuticle oil. Pack into a small travel bottle and
take away with you on holiday to keep your skin
hydrated.
5. USE TOMATO JUICE TO KEEP BLONDE
HAIR BRIGHT...
Chlorine can certainly damage your hair, especially
if you’re blonde or have highlights. It can also add
an awful greenish tinge. To protect your colour,
coat your hair in leave-in conditioner or sesame oil
before swimming. Always remember to rinse your
hair after getting out the pool and wash in cold
water to boost shine. For a post-swim remedy,
coat your hair and your scalp in tomato juice for
5-10 minutes before washing with shampoo and
conditioner. This will help fade the greenish hue if
you have one.
skin and it will help your skin heal.
8. USE DEODORANT TO SWEAT-PROOF
YOUR HAIR...
Besides being a necessity for your underarms,
a swipe or spritz of deodorant on the back of
your neck will keep you feeling cool in high
temperatures, as well as preventing hair from
sticking to the skin.
9. MAKE YOUR EYE SHADOWS SUITCASE-
FRIENDLY...
Place a cotton pad in-between your blush
and bronzer compacts to prevent them from
shattering in your suitcase. Your expensive beauty
products will thank you for this hack.
10. GET YOURSELF SOME BABY POWDER...
Baby powder isn’t just for little ones; it can be
used as a cheaper alternative to dry shampoo
and can also remove wet sand from the skin,
making it perfect to stash away in your beach
bag.
For bookings or advice call
Cabello on 01986 875007 or pop
in and see us at 3 London Road,
Halesworth, IP19 8LH.
6. PUT YOUR NAIL POLISHES IN THE
FRIDGE...
High temperatures can cause nail polish to turn
thick and gloopy. Keeping it in a cool place like the
fridge can extend your nail varnishes shelf life and
make it smooth and easy to apply.
7. MAKE ALOE VERA ICE CUBES TO TREAT
SUNBURN...
If you get too much sun, freeze Aloe Vera into ice
cube trays. This will feel amazing on your burnt
REVITALISE YOUR SKIN
This summer...
With GLAMGLOW Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment.
A week ago GLAMGLOW sent me
their Youthmud Tinglexfoliate
Treatment; I could not wait for
it to arrive in the post as I had
read so much about this product
online and wanted to share my
excitement with you all.
GLAMGLOW was set up in 2010, exclusively
for backstage and professional use in
Hollywood’s Entertainment, Music, Fashion
and Award Industries, then in 2011 it was made
available for everyone to purchase.
You are probably thinking, why has
GLAMGLOW taken the world by storm?
Well the main ingredients in the GLAMGLOW
mask are Volcanic Rock, French Sea Clay
and Active Green Tea Leaf and this magical
combination is said to:
• Leave skin noticeably radiant and glowing
• Activates collagen synthesis
• Provides gentle exfoliation
• Helps leave skin smoother, brighter and
softer
• Tightens and tones skin and pores
• Helps provide a more youthful appearance
• Absorbs impurities without removing natural
oils
• Helps protect against free radical damage
GLAMGLOW mudmask is said to leave the
skin noticeably radiant and glowing.
The Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment is a 10
minute professional quality mud mask for men
and women.
It works with the body’s natural collagen
providing a gentle exfoliation, leaving the skin
smoother, brighter and softer.
Skin texture and pores become tighter, giving
the skin a more youthful appearance.
So I know what you are all thinking, does this
product deliver what it states?
The answer is YES, this product is amazing!
My skin felt noticeable smoother and
tighter and this was only after 1 application,
GLAMGLOW recommends using this
product twice a week or as often as
desired, so I will most definitely be
stocking up!
THE HERB GARDEN
Greenery is the trend
of the moment. It’s the
colour that’s dominating
and it’s the plant life
that’s almost overtaking
At Neptune, while we pay
instead on sentiments that
will always have meaning and
designs that will never fall out
of favour.
SUMMER IS ON IT’S WAY
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip for May: Plant out
cannas and dahlias
As bulbs fade and herbaceous
borders grow in leaps and bounds,
it is now clear that summer is
approaching.
Sowing and planting out bedding can begin,
depending on regional weather variations, and you
can take softwood cuttings.
It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing
regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer
temperatures this month brings.
Flowers
Tubs can be planted up with
summer bedding in milder areas.
In colder areas further north or at
high altitudes, it is advised to wait until
early June, or until all risk of frost has passed.
Divide clumps of herbaceous perennials that you
want to propagate.
Bamboos and clumps of bulbs or rhizomes can be
divided in the same way. Cutting back clumps of
spring-flowering perennials such as Pulmonaria and
Doronicum can encourage a fresh flush of foliage.
Top jobs this month:
1. Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants
2.Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still
remaining
5. Regularly hoe off weeds
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm
days
7. Mow lawns weekly
8. Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges
3. Plant out summer bedding at the end of the
month (except in cold areas)
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils
and other spring-flowering bulbs
4. Collect rainwater and investigate ways to
recycle water for irrigation
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle
grubs
CENTRE
anyone?
Now my quick-fire response
to this question would most
certainly, normally, be a no.
BY RUBY REED
I am far from green
fingered.
But when Mum and Nan invited
me along to their annual visit, I
thought I’d take them up on this
VIP invite and see what I
was missing.
everything else? The ‘garden centre’ housed a lot of
different departments and I soon realised lots of people
were here for a leisurely wander- not just a replacement
wheelbarrow.
We worked our way through home furnishings, stationery,
cards, novelty gifts, clothing, sculptures, home foods,
plants and various other areas. Don’t get me started on the
pet’s corner!
Scotsdales Garden Centre in
Cambridge was our destination.
I was unsure at how we were
going to spend the majority of
the day here but I soon found out
there can be more to a garden
centre than gardening…
A little while in I realised I had lost track of Mum and Nan.
We were all being distracted by our different interests. Nan
was off searching for greeting cards and Mum decorative
end tables. I myself had built up a bit of a wish list too
including; a cacti plant (it pricked me but I still wanted it),
a selection of chocolate and fudge, a sculpture, a scarf
holder and most importantly a dwarf rabbit.
Sure, there was a gardening
section! But what about
Before any purchase decisions were made we regrouped
for lunch in the café. And it was busy! We got our table
102
HOME & GARDEN
MAY 2017 MAY | ISSUE 2017 #55 | ISSUE | HOME #55 & GARDEN
just before 1pm and there was
plenty of atmosphere even on
a weekday.
Weekends are very popular
according to the waiter!
There was a good selection
for lunch, and all the food
being placed on the tables
around us looked tempting.
Mum and Nan went for their
traditional quiche and I opted
for the prawn jacket potato-
I’d have it again.
Over lunch, as well as having a
lovely catch up, we all decided
what we would be leaving
with.
So after the energy boost we
set off to fill the baskets.
Mum and Nan left with two tables, bird
feeders and countless plants.
I selected two items from my wish list- the
cacti and chocolates.
Well who’d have thought it, an afternoon out
at the garden centre?
Especially if they’re all equipped with cafes
and pet corners! Although I did leave with a
new-found desire to decorate the garden…
This must count as a mums always right
moment- and nan too! Except next time I’m
leaving with the rabbit.
Visit yours and see what you come back with-
It’s the perfect time of year to bring out your
summer mood! Time for a BBQ?
Follow me on Twitter @rubyslifestyle.
From now on you can count me in. I guess
you don’t have to love gardening to visit a
gardening centre.
often keeping out opponents almost singlehandedly.
My biggest fear this summer is losing
our ‘Pole in goal’ – even though the comments
above, from Mick McCarthy, once again diverted
the headlines back to the man in the hotseat.
I WON’T WALK AWAY SAYS
MCCARTHY BUT WILL TOWN KEEP
HOLD OF THEIR BIG POLE...
“As for some of the stuff about
‘Mick McCarthy you’ve ruined
our club’, that’s the biggest load
of cobblers I have ever heard.
“I saved the club from
relegation and I have had
three top-10 finishes.
The one time I have a
bad season then people
have turned their backs
on me which is a bit
of a surprise and it’s
disappointing.
“But hey-ho, I am not
walking away. I have a
year’s contract to run
and unless something else is done, no, I am
not going, no way.”
I had every intention of waxing lyrical this
month about Bartosz Bialkowski.
It’s player of the year time at Portman
Road and beyond and while 2016/17
will probably only be ‘memorable’ for
being the club’s worst in over years, not
everything about the campaign should be
forgettable.
Tom Lawrence had a purely magical
midway spell where virtually everything he
touched turned to goals, but Bialkowski
gets my nod, for pure consistency and
It seemed certain that McCarthy’s impressive
reign in Suffolk was coming to an end. Forget
the last few months, overall Mick has done an
amazing job on a budget where ‘shoestring’
barely does it justice. That said, for many
months, my opinion has been its time for a
change but clearly that also depends on the
direction owner Marcus Evans is taking us.
Could anyone do better on such little financial
backing? I’m not so sure. Could another
manager at least play a more attractive brand of
football? I think so.
If Mick is to stay, and I can’t see
him getting sacked, then Evans
needs to start truly backing his
man. The relationship between
McCarthy and Evans has shown
a few understandable cracks of
late, but surely there has to be
serious summer talks over the
direction of the club.
Ipswich will start next season with
a few thousand less season ticket holders, but
something has to be done to start bringing back
some of the fans.
Style of football has to be almost as important
as points on the board. Fans don’t expect to win
the league, but they do expect to see an attempt
of an ‘Ipswich way’ of playing – something I
don’t think is too much to ask.
McCarthy’s recent talk of a top-six push next
season is fantastical without some investment in
the playing staff in what will be one of the most
intriguing summers at IP1 for many a year.
The spotlight will remain on the manager and
also the future of captain Luke Chambers and
Christophe Berra.
KNOW YOUR ARNIS
FROM YOUR ELBOW!
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
This month I joined maestro
Eric Amada at the Stowupland
sports centre for a lesson in the
martial art and national sport of
the Philippines, Modern Arnis.
In its current guise the sport is relatively
young having been founded in the 1960s
by Remy Presas, Modern Arnis (also known
as Kali and Eskrima) includes hand-to-hand
combat, joint locks, grappling and couples
them to the centuries old Filipino Martial Art
style which incorporates weapons such as
sticks and blades.
Whilst you may not have heard about it the
sport is as popular as karate and judo. It’s
addition of weapons and a fluid counter
attacking style generates a very attractive art
to watch and to practice.
In fact you’ve probably already watched
Arnis without even knowing it, Hollywood
movie stables Taken, Bourne and the latest
Bond flicks all include an element of Arnis in
their fight choreography as does hit Netflix
series Daredevil, in which case keep your eyes
peeled for Action Man: The Movie!
I joined the group at their regular training
session on Tuesday evenings 7:00 - 8:30 at
Stowupland Sports Centre (Church Rd, IP14
4BQ) whilst I have participated in a number
of different marital arts now the styles and
techniques are all slightly different, which
makes Arnis not only great for total novices
but also those looking to add to their martial
art repertoire.
Following our warm up, it was time to pick up
our sticks, the most common Arnis weapon,
first we learned striking, then we studied
defending and then moved on to combining
the two and it wasn’t long before I was able
to string together an effective and thrilling
sequence. Granted, at a more subtle pace
than the more experienced group but after
just one lesson I was very happy and proud of
how much I had picked up through my first 90
minute class under the excellent guidance of
Maestro Eric Amada an executive member of
the national body BCKEAI.
I appreciate that it can be difficult when
starting a new sport to catch up amongst a
vastly more experienced group however now
is the perfect opportunity.
Modern Arnis UK have a special beginners
course starting on Tuesday May 2nd and
running for 4 weeks.
Introducing…Roots in the Park
Just a few miles outside Bury St
Edmunds, Culford Hall will host
two outdoor musical events this
June. Opera in the Park on Saturday
17 June and Roots in the Park on
Sunday 18 June, sponsored by
Edwards & Blake and supported by
Lancaster BMW and MINI Bury St
Edmunds.
Now in its fourth year, the magical Opera in
the Park will trace the story of opera through
the centuries: from the works of Handel and
Mozart, to 20th century showstoppers by
Puccini.
On the day following the opera, Culford is
holding its first Roots in the Park event. With
BBQ food and fantastic live music from a
variety of Americana, alt-country and folkrock
bands on the South Front stage from
4pm until sunset, this is the perfect lazy
Sunday afternoon and evening event for the
whole family and friends.
Acclaimed up-and-coming artists Winter
Mountain, Danni Nicholls, Robert Vincent and
Vagaband are four of the acts confirmed so
far.
Tickets are £15 and £8 for under 18s and can
BY MIDDLE SEA MUSIC
MUSIC
Middle Sea Music was born in the
summer of 2012 as a live music
night at Walberswick’s infamous
Studio on the coast of Suffolk,
and quickly grew into an active
and supportive community of
musicians and fans.
As well as that in June’s Edition, we will
be showcasing the talents of local Suffolk
musician Nonny Denny.
TOP TIPS FOR MOVING HOME WITH PETS...
Well you may have guest it, I am
moving… again!
This will be my 4th move of home to date… but
it’s not me I’m worried about! As you know ‘the
kittens’ and I have become good pals of late, but
whilst I will move wherever I am told, moving
home for cats can be a little more complicated!
So after researching some top tips to keep them
safe, I thought I’d share them. Uff!
Safety first...
Early on the day of the move, put your cats in
one room with all doors and windows closed so
that you know that your cat is safe and can be
found when it is time to go. Feed your them in
the morning but not too close to moving time in
case of illness during the journey, ewww! Keep
your cat in a basket or carry cage on arrival
until one room in the new house is available to
become a ‘safe area’ for your cat. Familiar items
such as a bed, scratching post and toys should
be placed here as well as a litter tray, food and
water bowls.
rubbing it gently around your cats face to pick
up their ’personal scent profile’. Dab this around
at animal height in the room(s) where they will
be kept at first so that the cat begins to feel at
home and bonds with the territory.
When to let your cat outside...
It’s important that your cat stays confined to the
house for at least two weeks as this will allow
them time to get used to their new territory.
A few days before you let your cat out, sprinkle
some of their used litter around the perimeter
of your new garden. Make sure your cat has
some form of identification with your name,
address and contact phone number. It is also a
good idea to get your cat microchipped. If they
are already chipped, then remember to contact
the microchip company to update your contact
details.
This is also similar for us doggies, but I’d like to
think I am a bit smarter than cats! Wish us luck!
Keep up to date with my antics on Twitter @
bouncearchie.
Helping them settle in...
Cats like to smell themselves around the house,
obviously none of these smells will be present
in the new house and there will be various alien
smells, which may make the cat feel insecure.
You can help by taking a soft cotton cloth and
