AAP-FOOD SAMARITANS ANNOUNCES 2017 

‘EVENING UNDER THE STARS’ HONOREES 

Contributions of Community Heroes to be Recognized at 24th Annual Gala 

Food Samaritans (AAP) announced that several community 

leaders will be honored at the 24th annual Evening 

Under the Stars gala on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 6 p.m. 

at the O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs. The 2017 

honorees include: Dr. Timothy Jochen and Lee Erwin 

(Jeannette Rockefeller Humanitarian Award), Gregg 

Selleck (Gloria Greene Inspiration Award), Laurie Weitz 

(Herb Lazenby Community Service Award) and Bob Pollock 

(posthumously) (Joanna Jakway Community Hero 

Award). The Corporate Angel Award will be given this 

year to Eisenhower Medical Center. For more about this 

year’s honorees, please see below. 

“AAP – Food Samaritans could not fulfill our mission 

without the dedication and support of the incredible 

people and organizations that support us,” said Mark 

Anton, CEO/Executive Director of AAP – Food Samaritans. 

“Without their caring and inspirational guidance, 

we would not be able to support the nutritional needs of 

those low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS and 

other chronic illnesses in our community. We are so very 

grateful for their unyielding kindness that they exhibit on 

a daily basis not only for AAP, but for many other organizations 

across the entire Coachella Valley.” 

Evening Under the Stars gala festivities will begin with 

a ‘quintessentially Palm Springs’ sunset cocktail hour 

on the grounds of the O’Donnell Golf Club against a 

backdrop of the majestic San Jacinto Mountains, widely 

regarded as one of the most festive cocktail receptions 

of the season. A short awards program will recognize the 

inspirational honorees, followed by a delicious dinner, 

and a performance by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. 

After their show, dancing will continue with DJ Jerry Bonham 

on the main stage followed by an amazing fireworks 

display. Tickets for the benefit, priced at $395 and $500 

per person, are available for purchase and individual VIP 

seats and sponsorships are also available. Congratulatory 

tribute ads for the honorees in the gala program are

The event will feature a performance by Martha Reeves 

& the Vandellas, an iconic Motown group that had, in 

their heyday, more than 26 hits and were a constant 

presence on the music charts, as well as on television 

and in top music venues across the US and abroad. Ten 

of their songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B 

singles chart, and two were R&B number one hits. Six 

of their songs were Top Ten Pop Hits on the Billboard 

Hot 100. They are most known for their major hits “Heat 

Wave,” “Dancing In The Street,” “Jimmy Mack,” and “Nowhere 

To Run.” Attendees will get their groove on as this 

beloved singing group electrifies the audience. 

Desert Magazine recently announced that AAP – Food 

Samaritans received TWO coveted awards in the 2017 

Best of the Valley Reader Picks awards. AAP received 

“Best Charity” and Evening Under the Stars won “Best

KG: Brandon Jameson cast my son, Fynnton in the film and when he 

found out a bit about me, he basically insisted that i be the Art Director 

for the film. I was hesitant, only because of my crazy schedule and not 

wanting to commit to something I could not win at, but I made it work 

within my other projects and have to say that it was one of the most fascinating 

and rewarding experiences of my life. I truly can not wait to share 

my work in this film with the world when it premiers at the La Jolla Film 

Festival in July!

KENN GRAY 

Few people can move into the The Coachella Valley and create 

a swirl of activity from fashion to television to charity. Don’t 

blink because Kenn Gray is on the move. Always energetic 

and friendly to everyone. His energy and aura is strong and 

smart much like his fashions. The word colorful might come 

to mind when you think of him. So get ready for a show like 

none other. LIVE Magazine is so happy and pleased to announce 

our association with Kenn as a new columnist. 

LC: You starred and hosted “Shades of Kenn Gray’. What was that 

show about? 

KG: That show was a hoot! It was basically a full on design show about 

projects I had worked on in my interior design firm, www.kenngrayhome. 

com. Like I said before, I LOVE making TV, especially when it relates to 

interior design or fashion. 

LC: Ok, now on to your interior design business, Kenn Gray Home. 

When did you find your interests in interior home design? 

KG: Well, I went to college for Fashion Design at Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles, 

however, I never did Fashion Design as a career. While in college, 

I started my own company called Paint the Town, which was a decorative 

painting company and that quickly morphed into what is now my interior 

design firm. 

Levvy: Wow Kenn, where should I start? Your television shows are 

interesting to me because of all the variables that go into production. Tell 

us a little about Travel Spies? 

Kenn: Oh goodness...that was a minute ago! That was one of the first 

TV shows I starred on. This one I hosted and got to travel all over and 

review (undercover) hotel properties from a design perspective. Honestly, 

this experience wet my whistle for making TV and I have been hooked 

every since! 

LC: More recently you were Art Director for a film named Pearl: A Fashion 

Film by famed film maker Brandon Jameson. How did that come 

about and what did you learn on that experience? 

Sarah Strader 

Gosh, it seems like a lifetime ago that I started making houses into 

homes! I am excited to have some pretty major launches coming up this 

year, one of which is a new line of luxury hand-painted textiles by Sarah 

Strader! Just wait until you see how we launch this! 

LC: What was or is your favorite design job? Where was this and what 

was the style? 

KG: I have had so many favorites, and to be clear, the style doesn’t determine 

my happiness with a project as much as the clients I am working 

with. I love making my clients dreams happen and to see them happy 

makes me happy...very happy. 

LC: This past year you became involved with Style Fashion Week. And 

boy did you get involved! Tell us about Style Fashion Week. 

KG: Again, this has been the start of something incredible for me. I 

really did not need another career, lol, but could not say no to this opportunity. 

I am the Art & Design Director for Style Fashion Week, globally. 

Lee and Veronica Kerzner started www.stylefashionweek.com many 

years ago and have worked tirelessly to build the brand with a mission 

of supporting and giving a platform to the emerging as well as seasoned 

artists and designers. This fits so closely with my own personal mission 

that I just HAD to be a part of it! We produce fashion week events twice 

a year in many markets across the globe and my job is to curate the Art & 

Design Marketplace at these events. However, my job extends to many 

other aspects of the production from sponsorship and vendor procurement, 

to VIP and celebrity relations and red carpet commentary/hosting. 

Honestly, this organization tics all of my boxes from design to fashion 

to PR and Marketing...i could not be happier to be building an amazing 

brand with these folks that benefits so many talented people! 

LC: What played a part in moving to Palm Springs? 

KG: My wife, Bunny Jo and our son Fynnton decided to leave Kentucky 

and head out west...a very Beverly Hillbillies sort of story. Lol We have 

been thrilled with our decision and look forward to a lifetime of more wonderful 

memories here in the desert! I will say that our decision was based 

in large part to our son, Fynnton’s, clear talent and need to be closer to 

Los Angeles. 

LC: I saved the best part for last. How and where did you meet your 

beautiful wife, Bunny Jo? 

KG: Well, she will tell the story a bit differently, but we met at a very nice 

restaurant in Paducah KY just after I moved there from Boston and, even 

though I WAS NOT looking to get into any sort of relationship, this was an 

undeniable moment of knowing on both our parts. You just know when 

you find your ‘person’ and we are each other's ‘person’ without a doubt. 

She completes me (which i know sounds so cheesy and cliche) but it is 

true.

LC: Then family happens and your 

son is born. Fynnton is an amazing 

young man. I think he has wonderful 

parents! Fynnton is an actor and 

model. What is his career shaping 

up to be?

KG: You are very kind Levvy, as 

have most of the people we have 

met here have been. And you are 

right, Fynnton is amazing. Do 

Bunny Jo and I take credit for this? 

A bit, well, maybe a lot, but he is a 

special child with gifts beyond most 

people’s comprehension and we feel 

that we are just here to guide him 

and the people he touches through 

the experience with grace and love. 

Fynnton has been killing it since we 

arrived in California, doing movies, 

music videos for the likes of Michael 

Buble, recording songs with Rick 

Springfield, commercials for Disney, 

Toyota, runway and print work and 

the list goes on and on. We are 

keeping the road hot between here 

and Los Angeles for sure! He loves 

it and we are here to support him! 

He has such a wonderful following of 

fans and supporters and most enjoy 

his posts on instagram

LC: What advice would you give to 

an up and coming designer? 

KG: Take business courses...as 

many as you can! It took me a long 

time to realize the importance of 

this, having taken all design related 

courses throughout my college 

career, i didn’t see the need in 

business but obviously I was not in 

tune with the real world at that time. 

It took me a lot longer to become 

a success because I didn’t have a 

good business foundation. I innately 

know so many things about 

business but having a true business 

education would have jump started 

me and carried me along in a much 

more profitable way and with a lot 

less headache and time!

We make choices about what to include in our days and about who and 

what to bring into our lives. These choices matter. Design your life to be

Wang’s in the Desert is one of those places in a destination 

city that is a 'must visit'. A Miami friend of ours recently 

asked another friend, "When we are in Palm Springs, what is 

on the 'must do' list while visiting?” They answered, "For 

sure on Fridays take the tram in the morning and get some 

mountain fresh air and perhaps throw some snowballs before 

heading back down to the village. Take in the pool with 

friends in the afternoon and get ready to head to Wang’s for 

Happy Hour! Everyone from LA and SD is going there!" 

The bar opens every day at 3 with a nice 'starters’ menu, so 

we enjoy meeting our friends for a nibble and happy hour 

before a night of fun. The full menu is available daily at 5. 

Saturday nights are great to invite your besties for some 

family-style dining at Wang’s. The menu is large so there is 

something for everyone's palette. Make sure to call for reservations 

because Wang’s gets quickly crowded with locals, 

visitors and perhaps a celebrity or two. 

The menu has a few main categories: Sweet, Savory, Combination, 

and Fire. There are also Starters, Noodles, Tofu and 

Vegetable sections, and some festive innovative desserts! 

We have had almost every item on the menu and a personal 

favorite is the Gingered Beef. It is so savory with the angus 

flank steak marinated in a sesame ginger sauce, served with 

leeks and asparagus. We love it! This is Award-Winning Pan 

Asian Food. There are 19 different starters including all your 

favorites from Warm or Cold Edamame or Coconut Shrimp to 

traditional Wontons (steamed or fried), and Vietnamese Veggie 

wraps. They also have group sampler platters and pots of 

soup. And don’t forget the dim sum! This is authentic fresh 

food. Did we say, Yum!? 

The dining area is great for people watching yet large enough 

that there is ample space between you and the other guests, 

lending some privacy for conversation. The lighting is indirect, 

with soft colored led lights giving just a glow of blue or 

purple. There are several breakout areas for large party seating. 

Wang’s is a favorite for birthdays, holidays and reunion 

parties because of the festive presentations and the menu 

variety.

tures to add to the Asian flare. An arched wooden foot-bridge 

is crossed on the way to the restrooms. A waterfall takes you 

a ‘world away’ as it spills into the quaint waterway under the 

bridge. The whole experience might add a little swag to your 

walk if you just left the inside bar at happy hour.

martini, and warm up on your chopstick skills, nibbling on some 

complimentary lightly pickled fresh cucumber slices. 

Manager David Lane keeps things flowing really well. David has 

worked at Wangs for .....yrs. You know things are going well 

when you see David take time to pat patrons on their backs when 

they share with him some success they just achieved. He really 

knows his guests. There is a lot to do when you are manager of 

a restaurant like this, so huge kudos go to you, David Lane! 

Besides the dining room and bar, you may dine with table service 

and cocktails on the ambient open-air patio with nightly 

entertainment, called The Venue. Amber Lane is the director of 

entertainment. So many cool and different types of music get 

booked by Amber. So expect someone different and original 

performing at The Venue at Wang’s at your next visit. Artists of 

many types get booked here, from amazing solo stars like Gennine 

Francis and guitarist/vocalist, Alex Santana, to a young jazz 

ensemble like The Suits, or a variety show of vocal artists. Many 

times special guests are flown in. A few months ago, they had 

Brian Justin Crum from America's Got Talent, and a tour of pop 

music stars from the album collection, Wanna Party, with album 

producer Jay Warsinske and world famous drummer and producer, 

Alvin Taylor. Most every night you will find someone very 

talented and fun at Wangs. 

The whole atmosphere at Wang’s creates a real sense of a good 

time. Thanks to the owner and management. Also to all of the 

waiters, bartenders, hosts. And of course, the chefs always make 

Wang’s an entertaining night to remember.

against every cancer in every community. We are the 

largest private, not-for-profit funder of cancer research

dexterity, and in general they tend to eat more sweets more often, and not brush 

as often. 

There is also another component that needs to be explained here. In the mouth 

there are several types of bacteria. Some are responsible for gum disease and 

some are responsible for decay. Some people may have the best hygiene 

and still have gum disease and some who have the worst hygiene may not 

suffer from gum disease at all. This is because they do not have the bacteria 

responsible for gum disease. Same thing for decay. Some people will be more 

susceptible to decay then others even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they have that kind of bacteria in their 

mouth in a higher rate then another person. But that is not a reasonable excuse. 

More brushing and plaque control with a topical fluoride application daily, 

preferably with a special personal tray made at the dental office will help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better the dental hygiene you have and the 

better your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, the healthier your gums and 

teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only kids. As long as you have one tooth in 

your mouth you are subject to get decay if you leave dental plaque on it and eat 

sugar!-- 

Do you think that dental cavities are problems only for 

children? 

The best way to prevent that is to have good dental hygiene at home and 

brushing after any sugar intake, and to visit your dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids only. But in fact, 

cavities affect all ages! 

The reason why cavities are more prevalent in children is 

mainly the fact that they tend to eat more sugar and have 

poor hygiene habits. However, when looking at the cause of 

decay, which is basically plaque with the presence of sugar, 

it is easy to understand that cavities can happen at any age 

even if your mouth is full of crowns. 

Of course there are some people who have teeth that are 

softer then others and are easier to decay but that affects 

only 1% of the population. Basically any diet rich in sugar 

will increase your chance of decay. Soft drinks, candies and 

anything sweet will have a potency to create decay in the 

presence of dental plaque. Of course in order to create 

decay there has to be the bacteria that will transfer the sugar 

into acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental plaque and 

it forms very quick after eating. The better hygiene a person 

has, the less they will have decay. It takes both sugar and 

plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush and floss, the 

more plaque removed and the less risk of decay. 

Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have more decay. 

It is more obvious with elderly patients who are loosing their

Remember the original King Kong? Well this film is not like the original 

in so many ways. Updated movies need to be more modern in style but 

also in story. A military squadron is sent to the island to map it. Unfortunately 

they need to drop equipment that is meant to drill into the earth 

and shake it so they can measure distances and map the island with this 

new technology. 

Kong lives on this island in the South Pacific and he is King of the island. 

Kong keeps to himself mostly. What lies beneath the earth is what you better 

be worried about. The scientist said he spent 30 years to prove Monsters 

exist. You don't go in someone's house unless your picking a fight!
