THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
EXALTED IN GLORY
First Reading: Acts 1:1-11

God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens.
The Gospel: Mark 16:15-20
The Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven.
Reflections:
All three readings today talk ab<strong>out</strong> Jesus being taken up into heaven or in a cloud or on high. Remember that in the
Old Testament, a cloud was a sign of God's presence. So these descriptions of the Ascension actually tell us that Jesus
is reunited with his Father and exalted in glory with the Father. Jesus not only has a new life that cannot be ended by
death, he also is no longer limited by time or space as he was before he died. So what does that mean for us?
Because he is not limited, he can be with us everywhere. So everything we do for Jesus (being patient with a child or
elderly person, caring for the poor or the sick, forgiving someone who hurt us) is done with him. Through his Spirit, he
gives us the power and the courage to act as he did and the vision of faith to see him in others.
Seeing Jesus in others takes some practice. Think of it as a learning process. One way we learn is through
observing the lives of the saints. They start <strong>out</strong> as ordinary people who give their lives to Jesus. As we read or hear
ab<strong>out</strong> them, we see how God works through them to do great things. We learn that they become more and more like
Jesus in how they treat others with love and respect.
But if the saints seem too distant, we can look to someone we love. Whether it is a parent, spouse, sibling, or friend,
the good that they do and the love they show is from God. So we can learn ab<strong>out</strong> God's love for us by letting ourselves
be loved by another. Take time to thank God for those who love you and ask God to open your eyes to see Jesus in
them.
The other side of the coin is seeing Jesus in ourselves. We may have to forgive ourselves for the bad choices we
have made in the past or the bad habits we still have. We also have to accept that God really does care for us as
beloved children. And we have to accept that sometimes, even when we do our best, we still seem to fail. Remember, to
the world of Jesus' time, he looked like a failure. He was executed as a criminal; his few followers all went into hiding;
and Peter, the one he picked as his successor, denied even knowing him. But the God who brings life <strong>out</strong> of death also
brings success <strong>out</strong> of failure. So trust God's promise that we have Jesus in us. Then do your best to follow Jesus and
you may lead someone else to him.

SISTER PAULINE SCHUTZ ~ 60TH JUBILEE
Sister Pauline Schutz is a native of Chicago Illinois, the daughter of Nicholas and Hermina Schutz. She and her siblings
(Florence Porter (deceased), Nicholas (deceased), her twin sister Geraldine Draniczarek (deceased), and Georgiana
Glennon) all attended St. Paschal Elementary School. Sr. Pauline attended Alvernia High School. In 1949 she entered
the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate and continued her education at the College of St. Francis (now University)
earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Theology.
Sister Pauline’s ministry began in education where she taught elementary and junior high
students in Joliet and in Ohio. These years of teaching were challenging and varied,
from Grade 4 through Grade 8, single grades or two grades in a room. For six years
she ministered as principal as well as teaching grades 7 and 8.
In 1978 she was called to help one of the Sisters at St. Pius X Parish in Lombard, IL
who was very ill. After completing that year in the classroom she was asked by the
pastor to stay on and begin a Bereavement Ministry in the Parish. Thus began another
phase in her life, one which became her dedicated ministry to the elderly, the sick and
the dying. She is now completing her 34 th year at St. Pius Parish. Of this ministry she
says, “It has been a privilege and a joy to share in so many of the parishioners’ lives in
times of suffering and times of celebration. I believe that this ‘presence’ is God’s gift
to me.”
Being a true Chicagoan, she is loyal and enjoys listening to or attending any sports
event featuring a Chicago team. However, her special cheers are always directed to
her Chicago CUBS!

Fr. Jose Maniyangat is from Kerala, India. Ordained priest in
1975 at St. Joseph's Pontifical Major Seminary in Alwaye,
Kerala, India.
April 14, 1985, the Feast of the Divine Mercy: On the way to
church he had a fatal motorcycle accident, head on with a
vehicle and experienced life after death. The doctors
pronounced him dead for loss of blood and broken bones. On
the way to the morgue the Lord brought him back to life for a
<strong>miss</strong>ion. His doctor witnessed God’s miracle through his fast
healing after broken bones surgery.
Following the message of his Guardian angel, he came to the
United States in 1987 as a <strong>miss</strong>ionary Priest in the Diocese of
Boise, Idaho then in the Diocese of Orlando, Florida. In 1992,
he came to the Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida where he was
assigned to St. Matthew's Parish in Jacksonville for two years.
Then appointed Parochial Vicar of Assumption Church in 1994.
He was assigned as full time priest of St. Augustine Diocese.
Since June 1999, he became pastor of St. Mary's Mother of
Mercy Catholic Church in MacClenny, Florida. He also served
as the Catholic Chaplain for Florida State Prison in Starke,
Union Correctional Institution in Raiford and Northeast Florida
State Hospital in MacClenny. July 1, 2011, he was transferred
to St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 1649 Kingsley Ave., Orange
Park, Florida.
He conducted a Eucharistic Healing Ministry in major cities of
the United States and other countries. Through this, God is
continually working and healing His people in our midst.

who share their faith through witness, teaching, skits, songs, and games. We also celebrate daily
Mass. Totus Tuus is a Latin phrase meaning, “totally yours”, used by Blessed John Paul II, to
show our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus, through our Blessed Mother.

Join us during the 2012-13 Activity Year at St. Pius X Church as we continue our Great
Adventure Bible Study Series with Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come beginning the
week of September 10 through the week of November 12, 2012 followed by James:
Pearls for Wise Living beginning the week of January 14 through March 18, 2013.
Sessions will be offered on Mondays 7-9 PM, Tuesdays 7-9 PM,
Wednesdays 9:15-11:15 AM and Thursdays 7:30-9:30 PM.
Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come offers an intriguing look at one of the
most mysterious books of Scripture and shows how the Kingdom established by Christ in His Church is intimately connected with
the Kingdom of Heaven, especially through the celebration of the Mass.
James: Pearls for Wise Living applies the wisdom of James to the present day world. For anyone who has struggled to live a
truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances.
Registration for Acts bible study participants may be turned in to facilitators by the last session in May. New participants may
register by filling <strong>out</strong> the form below and returning it to the Parish Office, Attention: Great Adventure Bible Study by June 1. The
combined cost for the Revelation and James study materials is $50.00. Checks should be made payable to St. Pius X Church.

Memorial Day — Monday, May 28
The Village of Lombard and Lombard Park District
are sponsoring a Memorial Day Ceremony Program
on Monday, May 28 at Noon. The program is held in
Common Park (Grace and St. Charles Road) in the
Sunken Garden area of the park at the Veterans’
Memorial.
The program includes presentations by Veteran
Groups, Sc<strong>out</strong>s, and other local organizations as well
as the Glenbard East Eastwinds Vocalists, the posting
of the colors, a wreath laying ceremony, and
recognition of Lombard residents who gave their lives
for our country. All Veterans, their families, and all

2012 Summer Camps at University of St. Francis
The University of St. Francis in Joliet has Summer Enrichment
Camps for grade school and high school y<strong>out</strong>h as well as young
adults. This summer, they expanded and enhanced their
program offerings with camps focused on science, technology,
art, theater, business, history, music, digital recording, digital
photography, and much more. New this year also, USF offers
comprehensive LEGO Education camps through<strong>out</strong> the summer
for grades K-12 that include Robotics with C programming

EL SIGNIFICADO DE LA ASCENSIÓN
La unión teológica, o tal vez la experiencia temporal de
la primera comunidad cristiana, hizo parecer que la Resurrección
y Ascensión de Jesús eran aspectos inseparables de un único
misterio. Solo en los últimos escritos de Lucas y Juan la reflexión
teológica que iba madurando ayudó a la comunidad cristiana
distinguir las diferentes dimensiones del misterio. La tradición
litúrgica ha seguido la cronología de cuarenta días formulada por
Lucas. No comprenderíamos lo esencial, sin embargo, si
exigiéramos una cronología precisa de acontecimientos históricos
como la Resurrección y la Ascensión que son principalmente de
naturaleza espiritual y que superan claramente los límites del
tiempo y el espacio tal como los conocemos.
Lo que es importante es que comprendamos el
significado de la Ascensión. Para Lucas, es el momento decisivo
que marca el final del ministerio terrenal de Jesús y el comienzo
del ministerio guiado por el Espíritu de los discípulos, y por lo
tanto el ministerio de toda la Iglesia hasta nuestros días.

The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the first and
third Sundays at the 11:30 AM Mass. No Baptisms are
celebrated during Lent. Parent preparation is required. The
parent meeting for Baptism is generally on the first Monday
of the month at 7:00 PM. Please call the Parish Office for

SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Please call the Parish Office at least 6 months before your
desired wedding date, to check availability.
FUNERALS
Arrangements should be made at the Parish Office before
publication in the newspaper.
SICK CALLS
Homebound because of sickness or age, please call the
Parish Office (630-627-4526) to arrange a visit with a
Minister of Care or a priest.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
Please call the Parish Office for arrangements.
Because of HIPAA Privacy regulations, hospitals can no
longer contact the parish with<strong>out</strong> family consent. If you are
hospitalized and would like a priest or minister to visit or
have your name added to the Prayers of the Faithful, your
family should notify the Parish Office.
