It is the wife of Lafayette who invokes your clemency; she dares to hope that the generosity of the King of Prussia will break the chains of her husband. I shall not attempt, Sire, to discuss the high problems which have arisen concerning the imprisonment of Lafayette, for it is allowed that women be not too well versed in the law of nations; but Your Majesty attaches too great a price to your own glory not to observe with exactitude this supreme law.
