Springs EQ & <strong>Tsunami</strong> event issued at 07:15 hours, 14 November 2016”.<br />

7:28am Text message to (District Operations Manager, Christchurch Police) re Local<br />

Controller has heard that Police are pulling out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cordons controlling <strong>the</strong> evacuation zones.<br />

Is this correct? “We still need to keep folk out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas until MCDEM have given <strong>the</strong> all<br />

clear”. Followed by telephone discussion with<br />

who advised he had received<br />

direction from Police District Commander that <strong>the</strong> evacuation was no longer require. Confirmed<br />

that Police would be available to assist with traffic management <strong>of</strong> residents returning to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

homes once sirens were turned <strong>of</strong>f.<br />

Threat to Marine and Beach Areas”<br />

8am Email received by CDEM Duty Officer re “National Warning#9: <strong>Tsunami</strong> – Threat to Marine and<br />

Beach Areas” advising “MCDEM has issued a tsunami warning (marine and beach threat) from<br />

Napier to north Dunedin, Cook Straight coastal areas and The Chatham Islands. Please see map<br />

attached for affected areas. The threat for all o<strong>the</strong>r regions has been lifted. All previous threat<br />

regions will experience unusually strong currents for some time. Areas under “Marine and Beach<br />

Threat’ can expect unusually strong currents and unpredictable water flows near <strong>the</strong> shore. This<br />

means a threat to beach, harbour, estuary and small boat activities. The severity <strong>of</strong> currents and<br />

changing water flows will vary within a particular coastal area and over <strong>the</strong> period this warning<br />

is in effect. Current assessments indicate that coastal inundation (flooding in land areas near <strong>the</strong><br />
