NOTES
Clay Small
(right) recently
released his first
novel, Heels
Over Head
(Greenleaf Book
Group Press,
2017). Available
through Amazon
and Barnes &
Noble stores, the
novel is a gripping
tale of highstakes
intrigue
and revenge. During his 30-year career
at PepsiCo, Inc., Clay served as general
counsel for nearly all of PepsiCo’s current
and former divisions, including Frito-Lay,
Pepsi-Cola, Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried
Chicken, and PepsiCo Wines & Spirits. As
senior vice-president/managing attorney
for PepsiCo, he was responsible for all legal
matters arising out of the corporation’s
global operating divisions. Clay received
his JD from Southern Methodist University
in Dallas and received his BA in English
from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he
was a two-time All-American soccer player
and later drafted to the Dallas Tornado. He
is currently a professor in the Cox School of
Business and a member of the Law School
Executive Committee at Southern Methodist
University. For more information about
Tom Hills (pictured below with his wife,
Colleen) retired recently after 37 years
in sales and management at the Brooks
Brothers Madison Avenue flagship store
in NYC. Wasting no time in enjoying
retirement, Tom and Colleen, took the trip
of a lifetime to Ireland, where they played
10 links courses, including Royal Portrush,
Portstewart, Ballyliffin, Donegal, and
Lahinch. Ireland was followed by a river
cruise from Paris to Normandy and many
days walking the streets of Paris, enjoying
the museums and fine restaurants. Tom and
Colleen live in Harmon Cove, a townhouse
community in Secaucus, NJ, though they
spend a lot of time in NYC and look forward
to attending upcoming Darrow events.
Dean Whiteside moved from California
back to upstate New York about nine
years ago. In his younger years, he was
an elementary school teacher and then
became a construction worker. He and his
wife, Rebecca, were married in 2014.
As the lead photographer on the Darrow
yearbook staff for three years, Fred Lewis
(top of next column) was pleased to see the
quality of the 2016 version shared with him
by Assistant Head of School Craig Westcott
in October. Fred took his talent from Darrow
to the Rochester Institute of Technology,
then Kodak, then IBM, which moved him out
to Colorado, where he’s been ever since.
After a time working for a company that
prints 75 percent of the billboards made
worldwide, he recently retired and is looking
forward to doing more camping in his
beloved mountains and desert, especially at
his camp in Red Feather Lakes near the WY
border.
Saarela, Director of Studies (right), met
with Bart Laws (center) in Providence, RI.
Bart is an assistant professor at Brown
University’s School of Public Health. He
recently won a grant from the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) and is waiting to
hear about one more.
Anne Paddock is moving to Maine next
year with her husband and is looking
forward to being nearer to Darrow. She
plans to be on campus this June for
her 45 th reunion and wants to be more
involved with “things that matter to her.”
