Three New Members Elected to Board of Trustees
At its June 2016 meeting, the Darrow School Board of Trustees voted to accept three new members, representing former students, faculty,
and a parent.
Pei Jing ’11
After graduating from Darrow, Pei
Jing ’11 went on to earn a master’s of
public policy from Brown University
with a focus on education policy. She
currently manages an education consulting
firm in Beijing, China, that helps
students and their parents form a better
understanding of studying abroad
today so they can make well-rounded
choices, and guides them in the mentorship
process after they enroll.
A significant aspect of Pei’s motivation
for joining the Board of Trustees
is to help the School connect and
reconnect with our recent Chinese
alumni and to help direct prospective
students to Darrow’s Office of
Admission.
She is also assisting Head of School
Simon Holzapfel and Director of Institutional
Advancement and General
Counsel Lawrence Klein with planning
for their March-April 2017 visit to Asia.
Richard O’Leary P’11
Richard A. O’Leary P’11 (pictured
above with daughter, Amelia O’Leary
’11) is vice president and chief human
resources officer for Hopkins Manufacturing.
Most recently, he was the
corporate vice-president of human
resources and chief human resources
officer for Milacron LLC. His educational
background includes a B.A. in
sociology and a master’s degree in
college counseling, both from the University
of Delaware; and a doctorate in
counseling psychology, from Western
Michigan University.
“Darrow is a special and rare place
on this earth,” Rick said. “Students
and faculty come together to create
a community of learning where the
expectations are high and the support
even higher. I joined the board as a
person who hopes to see the legacy of
what Darrow is continue to evolve into
a precious gift for future generations of
students.
Travis Shedd ’04
A resident of Arlington, Virginia, Travis
Shedd ’04 went on to earn a bachelor’s
degree in English from Willamette
University after graduating from Darrow.
Returning to the Mountainside as a
faculty member in 2010, he recalled how
“Darrow was the same for new teachers
as it was for new students: welcoming,
trusting, open, and dedicated.”
Over the course of his four-year tenure,
he taught English, Spanish, and Social
Studies; coached varsity basketball and
baseball; and served as head house
parent, assistant theater director, tutor,
advisor, Hands-to-Work crew leader, and
Spring Term leader. Teaching at Darrow,
he said, was “harder work than I’d ever
done in my life, but I wouldn’t trade a
second of it for anything.”
Travis received a master’s degree in
liberal studies from Georgetown University
and now teaches middle school
English at Flint Hill School in Oakton,
Virginia.
