Like most 8-year-olds, Charnelle 

“Mikee” Ombao is a ball of energy. 

Unlike most 8-year-olds, Mikee 

has faced some major hurdles in her 

young life. With the love and support 

of her family, she has approached 

each obstacle with bravery and happiness. 

This amazing second-grader 

has the maturity and wisdom of 

someone far beyond her years. 

When Mikee was only 3 years old, 

her parents, Crisnel and Charlote, 

both nurses, began to notice a 

change in their daughter’s health 

and suspected diabetes. Their fears 

were confirmed at Arnold Palmer 

Hospital for Children. Mikee was diagnosed 

with Type 1 diabetes, also 

known as juvenile diabetes. 

“The diagnosis was hard for us, 

but we strongly believe everything 

happens for a reason,” Charlote 

said. 

Charlote and Crisnel were very 

open with Mikee, never hiding anything 

about the condition from her. 

Mikee has shown great maturity in 

handling her chronic illness responsibly, 

which includes checking her 

blood sugar levels with every meal 

and giving herself insulin via an insulin 

pump. 

Two years after Mikee’s diabetes 

diagnosis, further bloodwork and an 

endoscopy revealed a diagnosis of 

celiac disease. Charlote said Mikee 

remained positive with that news, as 

well. 

“Mikee knew there would be lifelong 

changes to her diet but was

grateful she would not have to take 

additional medication for the celiac 

disease.” 

Mikee has never let her diabetes 

or celiac disease hold her back. She 

is an active and outgoing child who 

loves to sing and dance. In 2015, 

Charlote learned of an open call for 

the National American Miss pageant. 

Mikee was eager to try out. 

Even without pageant experience, 

coaching or a professional stylist, 

Mikee still ended up as first runnerup 

in the Florida state pageant. 

“I loved everything about the pageant,” 

Mikee said. “It was so much 

fun, and I made a lot of new friends.” 

Later that year, with the generous 

support of friends and family, Mikee 

traveled to California for the national 

competition to represent Florida 

as Miss Orlando Princess, where she 

won Miss Personality. Mikee thoroughly 

enjoyed the experience and 

was truly touched by the community 

service promoted by the pageant. 

- 

“Giving back feels so good, and I 

wanted to continue to do that,” she 

said. 

So Mikee asked her first-grade 

class at Holy Family Catholic 

School to donate books, crafts and 

toys to Give Kids The World and 

Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. 

“The book and toy drive at school 

was wonderful, because my whole 

class came together to help the kids 

in the hospital,” she said. 

While preparing for her seventh 

birthday, Mikee was still thinking 

of others. In lieu of gifts for herself, 

she asked guests to bring presents 

for children in need. Again, Mikee 

was able to donate a large number 

of items to the children at Arnold 

Palmer Hospital. 

“I don’t like to see people suffer,” 

she said. “Instead of being bored 

and feeling sad about being sick, I 

want them to enjoy things and have 

fun.” 

Mikee continued that tradition 

on her eighth birthday this past 

September. 

“I don’t want to be the only one 

who is happy on my birthday,” she 

said. “I want to help others to be 

happy, too.” 

Mikee continues to give back in a 

variety of ways. She has spoken to 

many students and HFCS teachers, 

educating them about diabetes and 

celiac disease. Charlote raves about 

the support that Mikee has received 

from the school. 

“Holy Family Catholic School is 

such an amazing school, and the 

care that my daughter receives is 

phenomenal. The teachers and 

school nurses are well-trained and

well-equipped to deal with Mikee’s 

medical needs. [Principal Sister 

Dorothy Sayers] has been supportive 

of Mikee since she started 

school and has joined her in prayer 

multiple times.” 

Mikee’s star continues to shine 

wherever she goes. She enjoys participating 

in fashion shows such as 

Orlando International Fashion Week 

and the Back to School Fashion 

Show, benefiting the Juvenile 

Diabetes Research Foundation. 

As for what she wants to be when 

she grows up, Mikee said, “I have a 

lot of things in mind. I would like to 

be a nurse like my mom and dad, or 

maybe a singer. I have been writing 

songs since I was 5 years old. I hope 

one day I will be able to share my 

songs with the world.” 

No matter what Mikee chooses 

to do, it is clear that her star 

will always shine brightly. ª

Restoring Hope for Patients 

Dr. John Carrozzella Finds His Calling in Wellness 

It took a relentless search of finding 

a resolution for the debilitating 

symptoms of his wife’s menopause for 

John C. Carrozzella, M.D., founder 

of Florida Center for Hormones 

and Wellness in Dr. Phillips, to realize 

his true calling. 

Having spent 25 years as a successful 

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Carrozzella 

believed this specialty was where he 

would spend the entirety of his medical 

career. However, after extensive 

study and retraining in the treatments 

of the devastating hormonal, nutritional, 

sexual and even autoimmune issues of 

male and female patients of all ages, 

Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine is 

where he found his ultimate calling. 

“There is no question that I feel more 

fulfilled in what I’m doing in hormones 

and wellness,” he said. “It is a spectacular 

field to be in, where you can reach 

out and touch people and change lives 

in dramatic ways. Very few people are 

blessed with the gifts to be able to do 

this.” 

“It’s amazing to hear [that] my patients 

have heard ‘there is nothing you 

can do, get over it’ [from other doctors]. 

Then, the patients come in to my office 

and hear that there is still hope. It is exciting 

to watch them leave the office restored 

and looking forward to their life 

again.” 

Treating Patients Like Family 

Florida Center for Hormones and 

Wellness stemmed from a life-altering 

experience that occurred to Dr. 

Carrozzella and his wife, Sheryl, 

when, after neck surgery, Sheryl’s 

health suddenly declined. She found 

herself lacking energy, having daily 

meltdowns, night sweats and a disinterest 

in intimacy. 

The common response among the 

numerous doctors and specialists that 

the couple went to was that Sheryl was 

in menopause, and there was nothing 

more to be done. But Dr. Carrozzella

answer. He thought there had to be 

more that could be done to bring Sheryl 

back to herself again. When one hormone 

doctor finally found the necessary 

and successful treatment for Sheryl, an 

idea formed in the doctor’s mind. 

“I thought to myself, There has got to 

be more to medicine than just straightening 

bones and fixing arthritis. So, I 

redirected my attention away from 

Orthopaedics and toward hormones 

and wellness,” said Dr. Carrozzella. 

He then spent the next five years earning 

a master’s degree in metabolic and 

nutritional medicine from the University 

of South Florida and becoming an advanced 

fellow of the American Academy 

of Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine. 

This change in career focus also led 

to the establishment of Florida Center for 

Hormones and Wellness, which specializes 

in treatments for male and female 

patients with hormonal imbalances, nutritional 

balances, decreased sex drive, 

sexual dysfunction and immune system 

disorders, among other conditions. 

The services offered at the center 

include bioidentical hormone replacement 

therapy for men and women, integrative 

and natural care for cholesterol 

and sugar metabolism issues, O-shots 

for women’s sexual dysfunction, Priapus 

shots for male sexual restoration,

When a new patient comes to the 

center, the intent is to personalize care

and subsequent meetings with the physician’s 

liaison to discuss the aspects of 

the treatment plan and any hormonal 

and metabolic imbalances found in the 

bloodwork. 

Communication continues as the treatment 

plan begins, from an hour-long 

evaluation by Dr. Carrozzella about 

the treatment plan to regular emails, 

Skypes, phone calls and in-person 

correspondence to keep the patient informed 

about his/her progress.

a cookie-cutter plan, but instead, they 

get a plan customized to his/her needs 

that will serve him/her very well,” Dr.

Doing More With Hormones 

Witnessing his wife go from hopeless 

to hopeful with her medical condition is 

why Dr. Carrozzella sees the potential

for patients. Despite unfounded 

objections about hormones causing 

cancer and higher risks of disease, the 

medical literature clearly shows that bioidentical 

hormone therapy is safe and effective 

when done by a qualified expert.

Escape at Escapology! 

Are You Up for the Challenge? 

Pressure, where you are onboard a 

World War II U.S. Navy submarine. 

A segment of a sub is housed in one 

of the escape rooms. Each group of 

two to six participants is assigned a 

game master to guide them through 

the clues and puzzles. They have 

60 minutes to solve the mystery and 

escape.

said Simon Davison, chief

The original Escapology was conceived 

and birthed on I-Drive in

“People seem to have an incredible

back for more,” Davison said. 

Each time, they try a different 

room, which Davison and his group 

of writers continue to design. 

“We offer a challenging, immersive 

and interactive experience, 

where people generally feel that 

they are part of the story.” 

Special storylines can be written 

to suit a particular occasion, like getting 

engaged. Davison said that most 

marriage proposals take place on the 

romantic trans-European Budapest 

Express, where it is the winter of 

1931 and a murder occurs. Having 

a romantic setting leaves plenty of 

opportunity for a special something 

to take place. The difficulty rating to 

complete this game is 8.8. 

Currently, Cuban Crisis is the most 

requested and played escape room 

game. Its story is based on President 

John F. Kennedy and the 1962 Cuban 

Antidote is one of seven themed rooms at Escapology. 

Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union, 

under Premier Nikita Khrushchev, 

has strategically assigned ballistic 

nuclear missiles to the Cuban territory 

with approval from the Cuban 

leader, Fidel Castro. As an adviser 

to the president, you must help decide 

whether or not to invade Cuba. 

This game has a 7.5 difficulty rating. 

Perhaps the easiest game to choose, 

rated at 6.9, is Antidote. In this room 


you find yourself in an abandoned 

Nevada desert laboratory, and the 

year is 2015. You and your team are 

tasked with finding the only known 

antidote to virus TS-51 before it gets 

passed into enemy hands. 

Davison believes the challenges 

are not really frustrating, because 

a great deal of laughter occurs during 

the experience. Many business 

corporations use Escapology for 

team-building exercises. Even though 

some of the teams don’t complete the 

mystery in the time allotted, they still 

have a lot of fun. On the plus side, 

teams learn to communicate and 

trust the members of their group. 

“The groups are hugely relieved 

when they manage to escape their 

room,” Davison said. “It is hilarious 

to hear the screams of excitement 

coming from the lobby.”

are Monday through Thursday from 

noon-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 

from 10 a.m.-midnight, and Sunday

the 2016 U.S. Kids Golf World 

Championship, placing second in 

the boys 9 division. He also plays 

in the Junior Magic Basketball

Changes are underway on 

International Drive, the tourist corridor in 

Southwest Orlando. On a positive note, 

the Orange County Board of County 

Commissioners approved the I-Drive 

2040 Vision Plan zoning. But more disappointing 

was the closure of Artegon 

Marketplace, a little more than two 

years after its debut. 

New Zoning for I-Drive 

Aiming to develop a shared vision for 

the International Drive area, Orange 

County Mayor Teresa Jacobs appointed 

a Steering Review Group of I-Drive 

stakeholders committed to keeping the 

corridor as a global tourism destination. 

The county commissioners accepted the 

vision plan in November 2015. 

“The vision is highlighting an important 

district for Orange County,” said 

Alberto Vargas, manager of the 

Orange County Planning Division. “It’s a 

world destination.” 

Vargas said the hope is that local residents, 

who now avoid the area because 

of traffic, will come and live near there

for reasons of convenience. It could become 

the downtown of Orange County. 

He explained that millennials are more 

interested in living in an urban environment 

and not the suburban setting. 

They prefer Uber and bike riding to car 

ownership.

“The code will create predictability, 

which the development community likes,” 

Vargas said. 

In February, the commissioners approved 

the I-Drive District Overlay 

Zone. Different parts of the 3,500-acre 

International Drive district in Orange 

County will have eight subdistricts with 

different zoning going forward. 

“The idea behind the International 

Drive’s new code format is turning it into 

an urban-form, better scaled for pedestrian 

environment and equipped for interconnectivity, 

and, more importantly, more 

predictability of what happens where,” 

Vargas said. “That thriving urban environment 

is almost nonexistent right now.” 

New buildings will be built closer to 

the street. Existing businesses may be in 

noncompliance but will be allowed to 

continue operations. Same with helicopter 

tour businesses. The current ones can 

stay, but no new ones will be allowed. 

The county expects some redevelopment. 

There are hotel properties currently 

in planning. When redevelopment 

occurs or any new construction, businesses 

will have to build closer to the 

street. Currently, property in the district 

is selling for $1 million per acre, and on 

I-Drive it’s $2 million per acre, according 

to Vargas. 

“Property is almost not available,” 

Vargas said. 

I-Drive is not being widened. County 

officials analyzed what was failing with

traffic and determined it was intersection 

density, and the need for alternative 

connector roads and a grid system to 

move people away from the two major 

north-south roads: I-Drive and Universal 

Boulevard. Currently, the district has 

17 intersections per square mile, compared 

to an ideal of 140 intersections 

per square mile. Transit also will be 

considered. 

“More lanes is not going to allow you 

to address the traffic issue,” Vargas said. 

“It’s more options for interconnectivity 

that is going to solve the problem.” 

Artegon Closes 

Artegon Marketplace opened in 

November 2014 at the former Festival 

Bay Mall and steadily gained tenants 

and shoppers. In November 2016, the 

owner, Lightstone Group of New 

York, put the property up for sale and 

told tenants “to hold tight.” CBRE of 

Orlando listed the property as 1-4 acres 

of improved mixed-use land. An interchange 

with Interstate 4 is scheduled to 

open this year near the mall. 

However, in January 2017, the owners 

gave tenants two weeks to get out. 

Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World 

Orlando and the Cinemark movie 

theater remain operational and are independently 

owned. Lightstone posted 

a notice on the Artegon website that 

it was taking the mall in a new direction 

and discontinuing operations. The 

452,192-square-foot shopping center 

closed Jan. 26. 

“What Artegon did to us is devastating,” 

said Wilmary Moy, owner of 

Otown Ink Tattoo. “The company 

came and got us into investing all of our 

life savings in the store and then did this. 

We have to stay strong and keep serving 

the community.” 

At this point, Moy is considering her 

options. 

The owners of other stores in the mall 

are persevering.

Crossings, inside the atrium at 5419

had a presence on I-Drive for 10 years.

“It was important to be where people 

know me,” Venturini said. “I have customers 

from different parts of the world 

come to shop. I didn’t want to give up 

on those people, and they have followed 

me.” 

Todd Fisher and Ann Young, owners 

of Gods & Monsters, moved into 

Orlando Crossings as well, with plans 

to open a retail store in Longwood. The 

pair did not want to move far from their 

regular established customer base of 

tourists and local residents. Fisher said 

after two years at Artegon, the store 

had built up a recognizable international 

brand. 

“They cannot keep us down,” Fisher 

said. “The writing had been on the wall 

for a while, but I never expected it at that 

meeting.” 

About 50 merchants attended the 

meeting with representatives from 

Lightstone. 

“We were all too shocked to do 

anything,” Fisher said. 

Fisher called the forced move “a blessing 

in disguise” and vowed Gods & 

Monsters would push forward and make 

its new location work. 

Dave Bowes of Bowes Candles 

and Jennifer Martinez, owner of 

Steampunk Garage, moved to the 

Altamonte Mall on March 1. Michael 

Phillips of Simply Savory is considering 

a move to the Oviedo Mall. 

He also sells his goods at 34 farmers 

markets. 

“The store [at Artegon] was nice, and 

it worked well for us,” Phillips said.

Planned for Skyplex 

Officials at Orlando Skyplex 

announced that Sky Jump is being 

added to their new rides. Guests 

will free-fall about 500 feet. Others 

are the Skyscraper roller coaster; 

SkyFall, a ride with a 450-foot

area, unload food, and sort and pack boxes for

volunteer drivers line up at OHS’s bus loop to 

get boxes of food and directions to deliver to 

families. Two delivery times are available to
