50yearsEFL
As the EFL’s 50th year celebrations continue, another two
individuals were recognised last weekend for their services to
the game.
At Kilsyth, Rod “Whacka” Paisley has become a most
recognised fi gure at the gate, along with his wife Heather.
Beginning his involvement in football as a boundary umpire
at the age of 12, Rod went on to play Division 1 football by
the age of 17. Retiring in 1975 due to injury, Rod was asked
to be the runner for the senior side that went on to win the
premiership in a most memorable 43-minute fi nal quarter.
Throughout his years of involvement at the Cougars, Rod
has coached junior teams, served on committee, watered the
grounds and assumed a wide range of roles including time
keeper and scoreboard attendant. He was also a team manager
and ground manager in the VFA from 1982-1984.
Granted life membership in 1982, Rod has also been
instrumental in organising past players days and other special
occasions at the club.
Rod can also be heard on Saturday mornings as he graces the
airwaves on 98.1 Radio Eastern, talking all things Saturday
sport, including EFL, from 8am.
No job has been too big or too small for Rod and, as a truly
dedicated Kilsyth Cougar, he has never refused to take part; a
worthy recipient of this award.
Down the road at Mooroolbark, Eddie Sudomirski has been
a long-time servant of EFL football, both as a player and
a volunteer.
He began his playing career at Vermont in 1963, and since
marrying and moving to Mooroolbark in 1972 has been a
Each week in The Eastern Footballer we look at EFL/EDFL/
KJFA affi liate clubs with players that have gone on to play in
the VFL/AFL. A team of the best 22 players will be selected
and announced later in the year.
Of all the players to move to the VFL/AFL, Ringwood’s
Paul Vander Haar is perhaps the most recognizable. A dual
premiership player and Victorian representative, Vander
Haar was a brilliant player capable of spectacular marks and
prodigious long kicking, either in attack or defense. Fellow
Ringwood player Kane Johnson was a dual premiership player
at Adelaide before returning to Victoria to captain Richmond
and is still currently playing in the EFL at Montrose.
Other notable players from this week’s group include Brett
Montgomery, North Melbourne premiership player Darren
Crocker and Glenn Kilpatrick (Magarey Medalist in SANFL).
Of the current group, The Basin’s Liam Shiels is having a
fantastic year at Hawthorn while Eddie Betts continues to kick
plenty of exciting goals at the Blues.
