THE STATS BENCH
By Noel McPhee
Each week, resident statistics guru Noel McPhee takes a look at the
head-to-head ratios across the divisions, which teams fl y high against
particular opponents and which teams struggle most against their
respective bogey sides. With fi nals on the horizon, every game counts
for more at this time of year as teams endeavour to avoid the dreaded
relegation or perhaps to secure a double chance come August!
DIVISION 1 ROUND 16
Wins Wins Draws
South Croydon 0 Balwyn 2 -
Blackburn 23 Mulgrave 22 1
East Burwood 53 East Ringwood 44 -
Noble Park 4 Knox 1 -
Norwood 5 Scoresby 9 -
Vermont 53 Croydon 20 -
There’s an easy equation for the Knox Falcons this week;
win = fi nals. Same introductory line as last week, but what a
difference a week makes. Knox now fi nds itself under a bit more
pressure as it comes up against Noble Park. Results last week mean
that the battle for fourth and fi fth position is now very much alive.
The two East teams face each other in a virtual elimination fi nal.
This is the third most prolifi c match up in EFL history (behind both
teams against Vermont) and while both teams are more used to
fi nishing above the bold line on the ladder, both have improved their
win-loss ratio compared to this time last season.
Norwood’s win over Balwyn kept its fi nals chances fl ickering. If they
repeat their winning form against Scoresby they would then face a
do-or-die match up against Knox the following week.
DIVISION 2 ROUND 16
Wins Wins Draws
Donvale 0 Doncaster East 5 -
Rowville 2 Lilydale 8 -
Upper FTG 2 Bayswater 13 -
Wantirna South 11 Mooroolbark 18 -
Montrose 3 Waverley Blues 1 1
Rowville and Lilydale match up as the top two teams and both are in
good form. The Falcons have only one narrow loss for the season and
Rowville have now strung together six wins in a row with an average
winning margin of 58 points.
If Upper Gully can knock over Bayswater today, the last two rounds
of Division 2 football will be very exciting with potentially fi ve
teams trying to fi ll positions 2-4. (Lilydale has already locked away
top spot with three rounds to play).
LET’S TALK ABOUT STATS
At the other end of the ladder, Wantirna South and Waverley Blues
appear destined to fi ght out a wooden spoon battle in round 18.
Wantirna South needs to try to close the percentage gap by some
“percentage boosting losses” if it can’t win in the next two rounds,
while all the while hoping that the Blues have two bad losses. Round
18 would then become a matter of whether the Blues win or have a
close enough loss to maintain a high enough percentage difference to
stay in Division 2.
DIVISION 3 ROUND 17
Wins Wins Draws
Mitcham 26 Boronia 15 -
Ringwood 1 Whitehorse 0 -
North Ringwood 15 Coldstream 10 1
Chirnside Park 1 Templestowe 2 -
Doncaster 22* Warrandyte 7* -
* Records slightly incomplete
Where there is mathematical chance there is hope. Mitcham
supporters hope for a big win against Boronia and hope that Chirnside
Park can beat Templestowe and the glimmer of hope for a fi nals
appearance. Boronia need to win its fi nals two matches and the double
chance will be theirs.
At the other end of the ladder Whitehorse have a faint hope of
climbing off the bottom rung of the ladder but must beat Ringwood
who have fallen from fi nals contender to bottom three from round
six onwards.
DIVISION 4 ROUND 17
Wins Wins Draws
Kilsyth 0 Silvan 0 -
Canterbury 0 GW Hawks 4 -
Eastern Lions 9 Heathmont 22 -
Forest Hill 16* Nunawading 7* -
Ferntree Gully 7 South Belgrave 1 -
The Basin 13 Surrey Park 0 -
* Records slightly incomplete
The interest in Division 4 now turns to the fi nishing order of the fi nal
fi ve. Whilst wins are important, the double chances could well be
decided by percentage.
The match of the round features FTG Eagles and South Belgrave.
The Saints can’t fi nish top three but would love some bragging rights
come fi nals or just some redemption from their hiding in round 2.
Kilsyth and Silvan will face each other for the fi rst time ever in what
is a must-win for both sides.
Each week, EFL Radio’s #1 Statistician Will Taylor takes a look at the latest stats from each week’s radio game.
