NUNAWADING: Two great wins form the seniors and reserves last
week. Things have been building over the last few weeks and it was
great to see this transfer to a great onfi eld result. This can only bode
well for the last fortnight of action as we look to fi nish the season off
with a bang. The highlight for both the seniors and reserves in their
victories over Surrey Park was the spread of goal kickers. The seniors
had eight goal kickers with Rhysy, Chief and Badger all kicking bags of
fi ve. It was even more impressive in the reserves with 13 different goal
kickers, Britts topped the list with 5 while Sammy Maskell chimed in
with 4. Rolla dominated the midfi eld in the seniors with a season record
47 touches. While for the reserves, Chyners put his hand up for senior
selection with a classy best on ground display. Coming up next week
after our last game we have our annual Vote Count. Make sure you get
down and help us celebrate the year. This week head down to Zerbes
Reserve to continue our local rivalry with Forest Hill. I'm sure the boys
will be super keen to put in a big four-quarter performance and chase
down a few Zebras. GO THE LIONS!!!
SOUTH BELGRAVE: For the second time this year all three teams
came away with a win against Eastern Lions. Fortunately the forecast
rain didn’t arrive until late in the seniors. The seniors were pushed in the
fi rst half mainly due to inaccurate kicking & the Eastern Lions were on
target. The direct, precise delivery to century goal kicker Apples in the
Silvan game went missing in this match & Lukas only managed three
goals. It was a pretty scrappy game to watch as it was congested at the
stoppages, with hand passes & kicks missing their targets and we went
in at half time only up by a point. However in the second half South got
on top and kicked away to eventually win by 59 points. Brock was a
standout all day along with Aba & his six goals. Dusty, Tommy, Burlz
& Scholes were also better players for the day. The reserves made an
easier job of it and their 81 point win saw them promoted to top spot on
the ladder, a fi rst in South Belgrave’s short EFL history. Rowds booted
fi ve goals along with Phil with three. The reserves were in control all
day and ran away with the match in the third quarter kicking 7.7. It
was great team effort. The Colts notched up their second win for the
season & did they sing the club song with gusto. Once again U16 permit
player Ben Joss was fantastic at full forward kicking 5 majors, with
the rest shared around 6 other players. The Eastern Lions came back
in the third quarter, kicking 4 goals 4 to our 1 goal 1. But to the boys
credit they kicked away to a 42 point win in the fi nal term booting
6 goals 10 to the opposition’s solitary goal. Cam, Lucan, Gaz, Pat, Brett
& Andrew were named in the best. This week all teams face the tough
task of playing Ferntree Gully Eagles on their big home ground. The
seniors will be fi ghting it out for the Colby Cup which we would love
to take back to Belgrave South and give us momentum leading into the
fi nals. To all teams good luck & play the best footy you can. Go South!
Also remember to get your money for Presentation Night into Scruff.
$60 a head and it must be paid for well in advance of the actual night,
September 30th.
SILVAN: This week we travel to Pinks Reserve to take on Kilsyth, with
two games to go all sides will be looking at fi nishing off the year with
some good results. Saturday night we had our white night and what
a night it was, a great turn out and a lot of fun had by everyone who
attended. Round 18 we play Eastern Lions and that evening we have our
THE BASIN: Three out of three for the fi rst time in four years at Forest
Hill last week which was a great result for The Basin FC. A lot of hard
work by all at the club is now starting to pay off with all three sides
now guaranteed a spot in the fi nals for 2011. The Colts were simply too
good on Saturday and managed a 16 goal fi nal term to win quite easily.
Well done to Moe, Chris, Jimmy who continue to play good footy. The
reserves got their act together in the last quarter and won by 5 goals.
Great to see Patch Adams back and playing well, with young Carbs and
Badger also putting in fi ne performances. Well done to Gary Lee and
Sonno who have the boys fi ring at the right time of the year. Seniors
bolted out of the blocks with a 6 goal to none fi rst quarter and continued
with their good form to run out victors by 50 points. Boys are playing
great footy and hopefully we can continue that form for the rest of the
year. Best: Maxxy, Trev, Brabes, Crusty and Johnsy. Today, The Basin
Football Club will be celebrating the careers of two of the fi nest players
to play footy in the EFL, Matthew Smith and Todd Power, who will be
playing their 300th EFL games. We are very lucky in having these two
players at our club, their knowledge and passion about the game has
not been lost on our younger players, who all look up to these two guys
for inspiration and advice. You couldn’t ask for two better people to be
involved with a footy club than these guys. Sure, they are both great
players but what a lot of people don’t know is the effort these guys
put in off the fi eld. Matt has been on the committee for fi ve years and
Todd also chips in with help around the club with functions, and the
famous Thursday night fi nes featuring ‘The Wheel of Death’. The Basin
FC would like to invite any past player, supporter or mate of Todd and
Spocks to come and have a beer or two with the boys at Batterham Park
after today’s game. Everyone is more than welcome. I’m sure there will
be a few laughs with Toddy and his animated stories. Again, well done
boys on a fi ne career and hopefully there is another year left in those old
bones. Good luck today, GO BEARS!!
PARK ORCHARDS: The Park Orchards Colts travelled to Surrey
Park for the fi rst time for our return match with them. Once again our
opponents were playing to keep their fi nals chances alive and so the
Sharks would need to be on our game to match it with them. A strong
wind was favouring one end and making good use of this would be
important. Surrey Park started with this wind advantage, and the Sharks
worked hard to restrict their scoring opportunities. Being one goal
down at the fi rst break was OK and the Sharks knew that they needed
to take control using the wind. Three goals for Park Orchards to nil
for Surrey was a good result, but another half was yet to be played.
With the wind advantage gone after the main break, each side needed to
make an advantage for themselves. With fi ve goals between them for the
quarter, the evenness of the game was refl ected in a four point margin
to the home team at the last break. The last quarter was a fi erce battle
with both sides driving the ball into their forward areas. The Sharks
defence withstood their opponents on many occasions, and worked the
ball back into attack. Finding the goals was proving hard for the Park
Orchards team, and would prove to be costly. Surrey Park managed to
score a late goal, and this was enough for them to end up winners on
the day. This week we travel to Forest Hill for the fi rst time for our
return match against them. See Kaye Pye or Stephen Harrington to get
your Club hoodie or polo in time for the forthcoming fi nals, and make
sure you put Friday 16th September in your diary for our Presentation
Night in the Coventry Room at the Coach & Horses, Ringwood. GO
