What a great night the 130th year ball was! Overlooking the hallowed
turf of the MCG and surrounded by Canterbury members old and new,
the night was a real celebration of the 130 year old history of Canterbury.
The guest speakers of Danny Frawley, Michael and Neil Roberts kept us
entertained with their humorous football stories. A fantastic night was
had by all in attendance. Available for purchase: Canterbury club song
on CD, Canterbury wine bottles, DVD's of the past two premierships
(1991 and 2003). See Carol or Leigh for further details. GO COBRAS!
EASTERN LIONS: The Colts started us off last week at home to
South Belgrave with a real chance of getting their fi rst win for the year.
Things looked promising early after starting the match with the wind,
but poor kicking let the side down and they couldn’t capitalise kicking
1.5 for the quarter. South Belgrave then got on top in the second, and
things weren’t looking good. But once again the Lions found some of
their best footy and after banging on four quick goals to only be four
points down at the last change they were a real chance. Unfortunately
South Belgrave used the wind to their full advantage in the last and
kicked away to put the result beyond doubt. Best: L. Hardy, M. Ward
and T. Mitchell on his new Weet-Bix diet. The reserves were even
further depleted than last week with more players promoted into the
seniors due to injury. They were always going to be up against a tough
challenge, and South Belgrave quickly got on top early. Our boys stuck
to the challenge all day, and although the result didn’t go our way, there
were more pleasing signs with lots of players continuing their good
form and improvement. P. Brabender was great kicking two and being
among the best returning from injury, B. Nugent continued his recent
string of great games down back showing plenty of class, and J. Wallace
and D. Russo battled hard all day. The seniors were looking to continue
their good form and take it up to another fi nals team. The Lions started
off very well against the breeze, only being one point down at the fi rst
change, but could only hold this defi cit in the second despite playing
some great football. After half time it was a different story, with South
Belgrave using the breeze to full advantage to grab the ascendency, and
then kicking away late in the game to make it look a bit worse than it
actually was. A disappointing end to another decent performance, but
we have another big challenge against fl ag contenders Heathmont this
week. Best: S. Sigismundi defying his age again, D. Ryan with 3 goals,
and J. Want playing his normal great game. Stock market night is on
tonight, so everyone hang around ‘The Den’ for a great night!
FOREST HILL: Colts came across the top of the table Bears and the
fi nal margin indicated why the Bears sit top of the ladder. Whilst we are
not looking to make excuses again we lost a couple to injury which did
not help the cause. Again as mentioned over recent weeks, they boys
deserve to fi nish the year with a couple of wins to reward their and the
silver foxes efforts. Reserves found some consistency; however it was
to the negative suffering our second consecutive defeat which has killed
our fi nals aspirations, barring some sort of miracle. Disappointing as
these boys showed throughout the year what they were capable of. If
you’re not good enough you can cop it, but when you fail to deliver to
your capabilities it is disappointing. Important we fi nish out the year
strongly. Seniors also saw the door slam on their fi nals aspirations;
however we were also relying on results going our way. So after tasting
fi nals in 2010 since i don’t care to remember when seems as though the
Zebs will return to their mantle as best of the rest. However shouldn’t
make light of the situation we have failed to meet our seasons objectives
and similar to the reserves it cannot be blamed on lack of ability. MUST
fi nish the year strongly and set the scene as we build into 2012. Another
team building to 2012 is the Lions of Nunawading who we welcome to
Forest Hill this weekend, still plenty on the line for both clubs including
local bragging rights!
GLEN WAVERLEY: Last we headed up the road to Pinks Reserve to
take on Kilsyth which saw the club come away with two wins from the
three games. The Colts got off to slow start but after the fi rst break put
the foot down to record a very good win against a side that was pushing
for a fi nals spot. Over the last few weeks the young Hawks have started
to play the footy that we knew they had in them, which will put them
in a good position come fi nals time. Major goal kickers were Triple
J with 4, Eggers, Pottsy and Curt all with two apiece. Best: Langy,
Eggers in the ruck, Pittsy down back along with Pottsy, Gregory and
Milligan down forward. The reserves could not fi nd the form from the
previous week and went down to a fi red up Kilsyth. The fi rst quarters
are becoming a real problem letting the opposition side getting the jump
on them and having to play catch up footy. This has now cost them top
spot with only two games to go. Major goals were Millsy 3 and Driver
with 2. Stand outs from the team were Millsy, Dayle and Rosco down
back and Rhys Burton and Crystal across the centre. The seniors started
well however poor kicking left the door open for Kilsyth and they took
advantage of it making the next two quarters into a tug of war. Our
boys went into the fi nal break with only a nine point advantage. In the
last quarter the boys got going and turned the small lead into a nine
goal win. Even though we were not kicking straight early we still had
major contributors with Robbie 5, D Gray, MC and Simmo all with
three and young Dylan with two. Dewar again roamed far and wide to
be best on ground followed by the Too Too Train with Benny, Mawds
and Corey down back and Robbie with his fi ve goals. Today the seniors
and reserves face Canterbury, (the Colts having a bye) which will be
another test for both sides considering the very good form Canterbury
have shown over the last few weeks. Tonight back at the club is Full
Moon Party so make sure we all get back and have a great night. For
KILSYTH: Highlight of the day was at halftime of the senior game
when Rod Sharpe CEO of the EFL presented Rod (Whacka) Paisley
with a plaque for 50 years’ service to the game. Rod said he enjoyed
the journey but could not have done it without the support of his wife
and children. The Colts unfortunately lost to Glen Waverley Hawks
100 to 29. Jamie Haag kicked 2 goals, Suban and Willes 1 each. Best:
C Suban, N McCulloch, H Thomas, D Nevins A Masters and A Willes.
The reserves defeated top side Glen Waverley Hawks 12.9081 to 8.7.55.
A Nyhus, J Wills, and C Barbour 2 goals each. Better players: Troy
Zaicz, Karl Schimmelbush, Brad Lindgren, Gavin Malan, Jarrod Jurrens
and Adam Moon. The seniors played Glen Waverley Hawks, to the
players credit they battled it out with their injury riddled side although
they lost. Jie Smith, Matt Edwards and Jimmy Anderson 2 goals each.
Better players: Chris Baker, Jordon Chennall, Mehmet Yusuf, Andrew
Herpich, Duane Dinham and Hamish Hosking. A big thank you to all the
players who helped out on Sunday at the junior fi nals. Don't forget there
is the next two Sundays that we need help so if you haven't been yet here
is your chance to help YOUR club. GO COUGARS!!
HEATHMONT: Last week our Colts had a bye and must win today to
keep their fi nals chance alive. Both the reserves and seniors had wins
and with just about a full list to pick from this week it will be interesting
to see who gets a game. It may well be the players who have trained.
Thanks to Ando and his crew for last week’s PJ night, a great night and
we await our resident photographer’s release of the shots of the night.
