The fi rst two weeks of the inaugural girlsEFL
competition has proved a rousing success, with a
wonderful day of weather adding to last week’s
proceedings.
The competition has been developed to accommodate
more than 80 girls who registered interest in playing
in a girls football team. Since this interest, more
than 100 have signed on to be part of the EFLGirls
2011 competition.
Koonung Reserve, home of the Nunawading Lions
FC are hosting the competition that has three rounds
remaining between fi ve clubs; Nunawading, Chirnside
Park, East Burwood, Ferntree Gully and Kew.
Two matches are played each Sunday morning
at 9:30am and 10:45am respectively with teams
comprised of 15 a side, primarily made up of
9-11 year old girls. Games of 4 x 15-minute quarters are
played on a reduced-size ground with modifi ed rules
to accommodate a range of ages and abilities, while
encouraging skill development, introducing technical
and tactical aspects of the game and providing a safe
and enjoyable environment for young girls to get
involved in playing football.
For 2012, we have the aim of expanding and extending
this girls competition. We are one of only a minimal
number of leagues in Victoria to run a junior girls
GIRLS EFL
football competition in 2011 and currently have a
number of girls playing in EFL junior competitions.
We are confi dent that junior girls’ football can be
successful with this kind of interest and excitement
within the league.
