The fi rst two weeks of the inaugural girls<strong>EFL</strong><br />

competition has proved a rousing success, with a<br />

wonderful day of weather adding to last week’s<br />

proceedings.<br />

The competition has been developed to accommodate<br />

more than 80 girls who registered interest in playing<br />

in a girls football team. Since this interest, more<br />

than 100 have signed on to be part of the <strong>EFL</strong>Girls<br />

2011 competition.<br />

Koonung Reserve, home of the Nunawading Lions<br />

FC are hosting the competition that has three rounds<br />

remaining between fi ve clubs; Nunawading, Chirnside<br />

Park, East Burwood, Ferntree Gully and Kew.<br />

Two matches are played each Sunday morning<br />

at 9:30am and 10:45am respectively with teams<br />

comprised of 15 a side, primarily made up of<br />

9-11 year old girls. Games of 4 x 15-minute quarters are<br />

played on a reduced-size ground with modifi ed rules<br />

to accommodate a range of ages and abilities, while<br />

encouraging skill development, introducing technical<br />

and tactical aspects of the game and providing a safe<br />

and enjoyable environment for young girls to get<br />

involved in playing football.<br />

For 2012, we have the aim of expanding and extending<br />

this girls competition. We are one of only a minimal<br />

number of leagues in Victoria to run a junior girls<br />

GIRLS <strong>EFL</strong><br />

football competition in 2011 and currently have a<br />

number of girls playing in <strong>EFL</strong> junior competitions.<br />

We are confi dent that junior girls’ football can be<br />

successful with this kind of interest and excitement<br />

within the league.<br />
