Florida Panthers Top Scorer Calls Delray Beach Home
By Nicol Jenkins
{
When Jonathan Marchessault is not scoring points on
the ice for the Florida Panthers, he enjoys the sunny
carefree lifestyle that Delray Beach has to offer.
Since he signed on this year, Jonathan
has become a local hockey fan favorite and
one of the top scorers for the team in the
National Hockey League. The Delray Beach
resident is having a career high season,
surpassing his previous season highs in
goals, assists and points. He also played in
his 100th NHL game on February 20, 2017
at St. Louis.
“This season has been a high point in my
career. I am happy to be with the Florida
Panthers. We have a good team,” said Jonathan,
adding, “It has been a rollercoaster
year for us; winning some games and losing
some. But now we are fighting a little bit
more and we’re doing much better.”
His love for hockey began at a young age
when his father taught him how to skate.
His dad and brother encouraged him to play
hockey and he never looked back.
“When I started getting older, it was a
choice for me to go everyday and skate with
my friends at the rink,” he said.
Jonathan Marchessault started his career
in Canada playing for the Quebec Major Junior
Hockey League in 2007, and ranked
third for points. In 2011 to 2012, he played
in 76 games in his first pro season with Connecticut,
posting 24 goals and 64 points;
and he ranked tied for first on the Whale for
points and led all skaters for assists with 40.
Then in 2012 to 2013, Jonathan played with
the Blue Jackets and skated in his first career
NHL game. His successful hockey career
continued the following two years playing
in 77 AHL games with Springfield and Syracuse,
posting 23 goals and 56 points. From
the 2014 to 2015 season, he played with the
Tampa Bay Lightning during the regular season,
and scored his first career NHL goal in
the Lightning’s season finale. Other achievements
included skating in two Stanley Cup
Playoffs games, including 1 in the Eastern
Conference Final against NYR; and playing
in 68 games with Syracuse during the regular
season. From 2015 to 2016, he finished
third on the Bolts for power-play goals and
recorded a career-best six-game point streak.
